They talk of the female fantasy in Hollywood and how it is underplayed on screen. It is so true. I guess they don't want to "offend" the veiwing parties, but shouldn't they know by the hoards of people that are attending the openings and any other event that has to do with the Twilight Saga, or any other story that appeals to the female population, that we DO want to the fantasy played out onscreen? Look at the response to Bel Ami....I know I'm waiting with baited breath to see that one.... but getting back....the idea of a supernatural or superhuman being with amazing abilities and the possibility that we may have the option to become ageless, powerfully strong, indestructible, superfast, incredibly attractive and not have to worry about bodily functions.....well duh.....men and women alike have had that fantasy since we were just kids.
I think the romantic aspect is the only thing that is added to the equation (because it is more prominent in the storyline) therefore classifying this as more of a "chick-flick" than action/horror. It was more of an undercurrent in Batman, Spiderman, and Cap'tn America, to set the tone to "rescue" the damsel in distress. Every boys fantasy. In the Saga, we still got the fight scenes, werewolves, people dying, the villains (Volturi) and some comedy relief. I, as a woman, want to see all that too. I like the romance aspect of it...so I get to have my cake and eat it too. Not to mention a couple of the leads are serious "eye candy." Sex appeal...that goes a long way, and Hollywood is at least smart enough to know that. What I don't want is corners cut on storyline so it ends up not making sense, or the shortcuts make it look too cheesey. Thankfully, they carried their weight enough to get here. BD1 was the best yet...however I still like the simplicity of Twilight.
They are starting to get what women really want, and they are starting to deliver some of it. Remember, it was a woman that directed the first film, and I think that she caught the innocence of the story well, with what she had to work with, budget, actors, location, studio heads. But she also delivered a unique horror/action genre film that turned the movie world on it's ear, and left Hollywood saying wha?
Awww... Penny... I have missed your works so much that it felt like choking with pleasure to see this popped up on the screen... Thank youThank youThank you! ^^
