                                                          Chapter 1 - Stench

                                                                     Jacob

Nessie leaped gracefully across the river outside the house. The rest of us followed swiftly, me shifting onto four paws mid-flight. Immediately, the usual voices filled my head.

           “Hey Jake!” chirped Seth.

“Greetings, Most High Alpha.” said Leah somberly.

“Ha, ha. Hey guys.” I thought. Leah mentally cleared her throat. She hated it when I forgot to acknowledge her femininity.

“And girl.” I added quickly. I didn’t have time to playfully squabble with Leah right now, the way I normally might have. We were on a hunting trip.

“Got to make sure those lovely leeches get all their nutrition.” teased Leah. There was no more of the bitterness that had once constantly invaded her tone.

“Jake! Stop talking to the voices in your head and hurry up! Otherwise there won’t be any good ones left.” yelled Bella from up ahead. I had fallen behind during my silent (well, silent to everyone besides Edward.) conversation. I picked up the pace, quickly flashing past everyone until I reached my intended target, Nessie. Her bronze curls were blowing in the breeze from her run, and her porcelain complexion was slightly flushed. I could hear her heart thrumming, three times as fast as my own, and her even breathing. She reached back, without looking, to touch her hand to my muzzle. It was a greeting for the other wolves. They chorused “hellos” back to her, though she couldn’t hear them.

We came into a clearing, and caught the scent of elk in the air, about a mile south. I followed Nessie, and we arrived in front of the herd a few seconds later. She lunged efficiently at the largest one. I looked away. Even after all this time, six years, to be exact, it still grossed me out to watch them feed. Bella especially, because I remembered her as a human, and still thought of her as one.

Ah, Bella. How different things are for us now. We’re finally the way we were always supposed to be, just best friends, and nothing more.

Nessie bounded over to me and touched my shoulder, showing me a picture of my wolf-self leaping at an elk, colored with a question of why I wasn’t doing it.  I looked down at her and rolled my eyes, then stalked towards a medium-size male elk. I took him down quickly, and sat down on my haunches to eat. I wasn’t really hungry. I was just going hunting to please Esme. Lately, she’d taken to organizing family hunting trips. What with me running around as a giant wolf half the time, and other members of the family involved in various pursuits, like remodeling an old crumbling house on Demarest St. (Alice), and getting their medical degree for the third time (Edward), she felt that we weren’t spending enough time together. And of course, the perfect way to get some quality time in is to kill a whole herd of elk together. What happened to good old-fashioned movie night?

“Mmm, movie night. You all could watch Interview With a Vampire.” Leah commented. “And then Dracula to top it off.”  I heard Edward snort from twenty feet away. Bella shot him a confused look. He shook his head at her and waved his hand dismissively.

“Edward finds you amusing.” I told Leah.

“Good to know. So, anyway, are you done hunting yet?” she asked.

            “Yeah, almost. Why?” I asked.

“Because I need to talk to you, stupid.” she said.

“Believe it or not, that’s what we’re doing right now, Leah.” I shot back.

“I mean, I need to talk to you when we don’t have a mental audience.” I caught a jumble of images from her, the most prominent coming with a scent. It was the vampire burn that I’d grown so used to. But this wasn’t from a familiar vamp. It was totally new to me. Definitely a cause for some worry.

“Ok, I’ll be right there.” I told her. Through her eyes, I could see that she was pacing back and forth right in front of her house.

“Hurry up.” I felt her mental presence fade out.

Thankfully, everyone else was ready to go home. I didn’t want to alarm them if I didn’t have to. Of course, Edward might have heard me and Leah’s whole conversation anyway, but he didn’t look worried, so maybe he hadn’t been paying attention.

I sprinted back toward home. Nessie took my sudden haste as a challenge, and started to race me. I purposely let her get ahead, just so I could admire her hair bouncing down her back as she ran. Not to mention, her legs didn’t look so bad either…. Edward loudly cleared his throat behind me. Sure, now he decides to listen.

Nessie doesn’t know anything about the way I feel about her. I mean, she knows that I love her, but she thinks it’s more of a big-brother type love. And, don’t get me wrong, it was, until this last year. Then it started changing to a different kind of love. And now that she’s fully mature, I know that I need to tell her everything, but I’m not sure how.  You see, the thing is, Ness knows nothing about our imprint. That was one of the biggest arguments I ever had with Bella, since she became a vampire. She thought that I should have told Nessie about it when she was little, so that she could have had time to get used to the idea, instead of springing it on her when she got older. But I thought I should wait, so that Ness wouldn’t feel weird or uncomfortable. I also didn’t want her to feel obligated to be with me. I want her to be free to pick who she wants to be with. Not that it won’t tear my soul into little, snack-size pieces if she doesn’t pick me. But I want her to be happy. That’s the most important thing to me. There isn’t one thing that I wouldn’t do to make her happy. Anyway, now I’m kind of wishing I would have taken Bells’ advice. Cause really, what am I going to say to her? “Guess what Nessie? I’m your soul mate! Surprise!” Um, no.

“You’ll find a way Jake. I know you will. And then you two will be as happy as Sam and Emily, or Jared and Kim.” Seth interjected into my monologue. I hadn’t realized that he was listening.

            “Thanks, kid.”

“No problem. I’m gonna take off. I’m getting hungry, and I smell that Mom’s making bacon. You really better hurry, you know. Leah’s just about wetting herself with impatience over here.” said Seth.

“Will do. Make sure to get some of that bacon before Charlie eats it all.”

“No kidding. I don’t know how Bella used to cook for him all by herself. See ya later.” Seth’s presence faded out too. Ah, sweet silence.

By now we were at the big white house on the river. Home. I ducked into some large bushes, and phased back to my human self. I quickly pulled on my shorts, and climbed out. Everyone else was inside already. I walked in the house and found Bella.

“Hey Bells, I’m going down to Sue’s for a while.” I said.

“Okay. Tell Charlie I say hi.” It was common knowledge that Charlie spent almost all his time at Sue’s now.

            “Sure thing.”

I flew out the door, and ran like hell out to the garage, where I kept my bike. I kicked it on, and raced down the road to La Push. I could have run faster than the bike would go, but that might have freaked out some innocent passersby.

I arrived at Sue’s to find Leah, still pacing, but in her human form now.

“Okay Leah, where exactly did you find that foreign bloodsucker’s stench?” I demanded.

“Right along the treaty line, and I went over to Charlie’s with Mom yesterday, and it was pretty strong there too.” she reported.

“At Charlie’s?” I choked out in alarm.

“Hey, I didn’t say it made sense.”

“Was the scent outside or inside?’

            “Outside.”

“Well, that’s a little better, I guess. At least it wasn’t inside with Charlie. But why would it be there in the first place?” I wondered.

“Your guess is a good as mine. Were your tame vamps expecting any visitors in the last few days?”

“No, but Alice has been getting these strange flashes about the Volturi. They seem to be trying to make a decision about something, but she can’t tell what. I ‘spose it could have been one of them, but I don’t see what they would want outside Charlie’s house.”

“Those Italian leeches? Ugh. Have you said anything about this to the Cullens?” Leah asked.

“I didn’t want to get them all worked up for nothing, so I don’t think they know, unless Edward picked it out of my head earlier. But it didn’t seem like he did.”

“Well, you better tell them. They could probably shed some light on the subject. Maybe one of their friends did drop by, and was going to have Charlie for a snack, but then decided they weren’t really in the mood for middle-aged police chiefs that day.”

“I’ll mention it to them.” I said, giving her a half-amused, half-exasperated look.

I turned and headed inside the house.

“Where are you going? I thought you were going to talk to your bloodsuckers.” Leah said.

“In a minute. I’m supposed to tell Charlie ‘hi’ from Bella.”

I opened the front door and walked into Sue’s tiny living room. Sue and Charlie were sitting on the couch together, watching a football game. Luckily, Charlie had found a woman who had just as much passion for sports as he did.

            “Hi guys. How’s the game?”

“Oh, just fine.” Sue said, as Charlie screamed his head off at the TV. Something about a “wussy quarterback”. “Come and watch it with us.”

“Oh, no thanks. I have to be going anyway. I’m just supposed to tell Charlie ‘hi’ from Bella.” I had absolutely no desire to watch any type of sporting event with Charlie ever again. The last time I did, his face had turned so purple from excitement, I was afraid I was going to have to call an ambulance.  Even now it was nearing an unhealthy shade of magenta.

“Thanks Jake. And tell her and Ness to come see me once in a while. I’m going to forget what they look like soon.” said Charlie, momentarily extracting himself from the game.

            “Okay. Bye, guys.”

I left the house and threw myself back on my bike. I put it in gear, and roared off to the Cullens’.

Thank you! I'll post the next chapter later today. Jake's going to tell Nessie about his imprinting!
Chapter 4 - Confession

Renesmee

I pulled Jake out the door hurriedly. He laughed, and started running in the direction of La Push.
“Aren’t you even going to ask why I’m kidnapping you?” he said.
Oh. I hadn’t even thought of that. I was just so irrationally happy at the thought of a whole day with just Jake.
“Oh, yeah, right. Why are you kidnapping me?”
“Not telling.” he said jokingly.
“Um, alright.” I was puzzled, but honestly didn’t really care why he was taking me with him, just as long as he was.
“No, really I just wanted to spend the day with Billy for once, but I didn’t want to not see you at all today.” he said, looking over and smiling at me. I smiled back, boldly taking his hand as we ran. What are you doing? I questioned myself. This is JAKE. The guy who used to play Barbies with you when you were one. What is wrong with you? But I didn’t let go of his hand.
We arrived at Billy’s just in time to see him and Grandpa getting into the car.
“Grandpa!” I squealed, launching myself at him. Not too hard though. I didn’t want to hurt him.
“Ness! I haven’t seen you in forever! Are you ever going to stop growing?” he said happily, pulling me close. The familiar burn rose in my throat, from being so near to a human, but I firmly ignored it.
“Where are you guys going?” asked Jake.
“Billy here got us some last-minute tickets to a game down in Port Angeles.” said Grandpa, releasing me.
“As a matter of fact, we better go, unless you wanted to miss the pre-game show, Charlie.” said Billy.
“Oh, no. Bye, Nessie, Jake.” said Grandpa, climbing hastily in the driver’s seat.
“Have fun kids.” Billy said, and I could have sworn I saw him wink at Jake. Jake’s russet skin flushed pink.
“Bye! Enjoy the game!” I called to them. We watched as their car drove away.
“Hmm. Well, so much for seeing Billy today.” said Jake.
“His loss.” I told him.
“So, um, did you want to go inside?” asked Jake, a little awkwardly. This was the first time that we had been left truly alone together in almost a year.
“Sure.” I said, feeling just as awkward. But also more than a little excited, a feeling which I immediately tried to quash, with little success. I was suddenly very grateful that Dad couldn’t hear what was running through my mind right now.
We stepped into the house, and sat down on the couch together. Jake turned on the TV, and handed me the remote. I flipped channels for a minute, finally settling on Spongebob, a show that we both liked.
I heard Jake’s heart accelerate, and his blood pound a little faster. But the sound of Jake’s blood didn’t make me thirsty, because it didn’t smell appetizing at all. I did wonder what was making him so nervous, though.
Suddenly, something very warm was around my shoulders. Jake had put his arm around me. I froze for a second out of surprise, and then slowly leaned my head on his warm shoulder.
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! My mind screamed at me. You’re just taking a nice brotherly gesture and messing it all up. There’s no way he thinks of you the same way you think of him. Besides, you shouldn’t be thinking that way at all.
“Are you alright Ness? Your heart’s going crazy.” Jacob asked with concern.
“No, I’m fine.” I said, trying to calm my heartbeat.
“Good, because there’s something I kinda wanted to talk to you about. I wasn’t really planning on doing it now, but since Billy gave me such a perfect opportunity….” he said, looking even more nervous than before.
“What is it, Jake?” I asked. Oh, God. I bet he’s been noticing how weird I’ve been acting around him lately, and wants to tell me to stop.
“Well, you know that I love you, right Ness?” I nodded, waiting for the rebuff. “And you love me too, right?”
“Of course I do, Jake.” I said, starting to get confused. “You’re my best friend.”
He didn’t say anything for a moment, looking like he was trying to collect his thoughts.
“You know Quil and Claire?” he asked abruptly.
“Yes, I know them.” I said slowly. I’d known them my whole life. “What about them?”
“What do you think of them?”
Had Jake lost his mind? This conversation was making no sense.
“Um, they’re nice people. I mean, it’s a little unusual that Quil imprinted on her so young, but I know he doesn’t think of her as his girlfriend or anything like that yet.” I said, still completely flummoxed. “Why are you asking me this, Jacob?” He looked down at his big hands as he answered.
“What if I told you that I might possibly have done the same thing that Quil did to Claire, but to someone who wasn’t Claire?”
“Do you mean you imprinted on somebody?” I asked, flabbergasted. A flash of pure jealousy toward the nameless girl ripped through me. “When? Who?”
“A long time ago.” he said, skirting the second question.
“‘A long time ago’?” I echoed. “But, then how have I not seen her? I thought that imprinted wolves spent almost all their time with their imprintees?”
“I do spend all my time with her.” he said, flushing a deep pink. “I’m sort of with her right now.”
I looked around wildly, half-expecting to see that some other girl had walked in. Because, he couldn’t mean me.
“You. I imprinted on you.” he said, his voice getting very quiet at the end.
Shock flooded through my body. My mind was a total blank for a few seconds. But then it started to sink in, and a feeling of mingled relief and pure joy washed over me. My feelings weren’t wrong or disgusting after all! Because Jake was meant for me. I felt like I was about to burst into song.
“Nessie?” Jake asked, looking like he was about to pass out, or throw up, or both. “I totally understand if you don’t feel the same way about me. I know it’s really weird and awkward. I just needed you to know. Could you please say something? Or at least move?”
I didn’t realize that I had frozen. I quickly blinked and shifted my weight. But I had no words for the way I was feeling, so I stretched out my pale hand, and laid it on his burning cheek. I let him feel the same overwhelming happiness that was coursing through me.
Eyes wide, he took in my emotions.
“Is that how you really feel, Ness?” he asked.
I slowly took my hand away from his face.
“Yes.” I said simply.
“You’re not creeped out?” he said timidly.
“No!” I said, laughing. “I was more creeped out before you told me. I had all these weird feelings for you, and I thought that they were all wrong.”
“No, I think that they’re exactly right.” he said.

Chapter 5 – That’s Some Nice Body Glitter You Got There, Bella.

Alice

I was sitting on the computer chair in my room, researching design ideas for the house I was remodeling, when a picture flashed in my mind. It was of Charlie and Bella, walking along the beach at La Push. Suddenly the vision shifted, and the sun came out. Charlie’s skin didn’t change, but Bella’s threw dazzling rainbows, like a crystal. That was normal, what was surprising was Charlie’s reaction. He didn’t have one. It was as if he was used to seeing his daughter glitter like a disco ball.
I pulled myself out of the vision. What was that? Charlie will know about us? Or just think that Bella got some potent new body glitter? I deliberately searched through the future this time, trying to find something that would explain Charlie’s nonchalance toward Bella’s obvious alien-ness.
For a few seconds, all I found were unimportant things. Edward was going to get an A on his latest paper from med school (what a surprise), Esme was going to buy a new lamp for the living room, ugh, it’s hideous, I’m going to have to talk to her about that. Ah, finally. Charlie’s down on one knee in front of Sue. Aww, how sweet. About time, too. Wait, oh no, she’s shaking her head. She’s pulling him into the kitchen. They’re sitting at the table. Sue’s talking; Charlie’s face is getting whiter and whiter. I can’t hear the words that she’s saying, but it’s pretty obvious what it is. Charlie mutters something to her, then gets up and leaves the room.
The vision ends.
“Jasper!” I yelled.
“Jeez, Alice, you don’t have to yell. You know I can hear you.” Jasper said, coming into the room. “What’s wrong? What did you see?” he asked, alarmed now, feeling the tension radiating from me.
“Charlie’s going to find out about the vampires.” I said faintly.
“What? How? Are you sure?”
“I’m quite sure. I saw Charlie and Bella walking in the sunlight together, and the vision seemed very certain.” I said.
“Was he one of us?”
“No, he was definitely still human. So, then I searched for anything that might explain it, and found that Charlie is going to ask Sue to marry him. But it seems that she thinks that Charlie needs to know the whole truth before he commits himself to her. Because you know, if he marries her, he’ll become an honorary member of the Council of Elders, and would be privy to that kind of knowledge.”
“So she thinks it would be fairer to let him know before he gets himself all mixed up in her life. Well, that’s very decent of her.” he said, pondering. “What was Charlie’s reaction to the news?”
“He just looked like he might faint, and then left the room.”
“Could you tell the date?” he asked.
“No, but it seems to be fairly soon. Charlie and Bella were walking along the beach, and it looked like it was still warm outside.”
“Within a couple of months, then.” he paused a moment, then asked. “Should we allow this to happen?”
“I don’t really see what we can do about it, unless we want to blow our cover ourselves. What could we say to him? ‘Charlie, I just had a vision of the future, and if you ask Sue to marry you, you’ll find out something very disturbing about us.’ Somehow, I don’t think that would help much.” I said.
“I suppose you’re right.” he allowed.
“I’m always right. And at least it looks like he won’t be too repulsed by us. He was still hanging out with Bella, after all.”
“Yes.” he said grudgingly. I could tell he wasn’t thrilled by the idea of doing nothing to protect our secret, so I grabbed his hand and said,
“Come on. Let’s go guilt Rose into fixing that weird clicking sound your Caddy has been making.” He brightened a bit at this. I knew that sound had been driving him crazy for weeks.
“Well, all right. And it could use a new coat of paint too, it’s been looking a little dull lately….” he mused.
I smiled as I yanked him in the direction of the garage.
