We all know that Edward was 17 when he became a vampire.
1) Is Edward forever a teenage boy? Why or why not?
We also know that he has lived for over 100 years.
2) Does time and life experience make him a man? Why or why not?
IF you believe Edward is a man.
-- Do you think he was a man at 17 before he was changed?
-- Do you think that it is his time on earth that has made him a man?
Well, this is a great time for me to return... I find that I missed these discussions more than I thought!
Anyhow, my 2 cents:
You have to take into account what "man" meant, maturity levels etc. was at the time they were turned. So just being 17 doesn't automatically mean he is less of a man, more of a teenager. At the time he was turned, 17 was an adult, was mature etc. So in a certain way, he was a man before he changed.
A second thing that needs to be taken into account is the fact that simply because he acts immaturely sometimes, doesn't make him less of a man. All men have their flaws, beyond the typical "man-child" type. Something that is seen as immaturity must be also weighed against the whole person.
My last thought before I cast judgement is this: the philosophy that vampires "freeze" is to a certain extent correct; that is the reason against immortal children. But they don't freeze in the way we imagine. If they did, there would be no "vegetarian" vampires, because they wouldn't be able to perfect a different means of living. Also, Edward did mention that he learned a lot more than his siblings, because he didn't have a spouse (to put it PG :) ). So learning, developing in some senses, is possible.
My verdict: He is a man, both due to his maturity when turned, and due to his time on earth as a vampire.
Welcome back, Amy!
Thank you for your thoughtful assessment. Certainly the time period that Edward lived in plays an important role in his maturity. And believe me I understand that a "man" can still be immature at times. :D
1. In a way he is, but also in a way no. He is a mature young man who has seen war, who has seen depression, and so on. He is also from a different era where they are more respectful of women, men, children if they are kind in return. In his era, his age of 17 would mean he is a man. Now this era would make him a boy. Guys who were born of this era do not understand the meaning of respect, employment, and love where Edward understood. I think that makes him a man.
2. Yes, I do. He has been through the years of Depression, Wars I and II, Cold War, among others. He remained true to himself where these horrible years could have made him a bitter person, or disrespectful to others, but he never strayed his personality.
Yes he was a man at 17 before he changed because of the era he was born. They knew what it meant to work hard, be respectful and love right. It has nothing to do with time on Earth. It has to do with who he is INSIDE. Wish boys had a tenth of who Edward is in the book in our world because if we did, then I am certain there would be less hate and less crap in our lives. :)
( However, I do believe there are moments of teenage tiimes like jealousy, unwilling to compromise at the beginning, and so on, but I think men are allowed to have moments of being a child such as baseball or whatever, ..... He did learn how to compromise with Bella, how to deal with his jealousy, how to be friends with the guy who is in love with Bella before she became a vampire, how to 'love' Jacob as a 'son' because of Renesseme. Just a few things in mind. )
yes Edward is a teenager but he has been matured to a man with his time on earth over his one hundred yrs, but honestly lets all be fare he is hot...................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So his life experience in your opinion makes him a man. A hot man at that ;) Thanks for sharing.
I think that because He was changed at the young age of 17 that makes him a teenager eternally because he did not know about life experiences and other things that make a young teenager into a man as life goes on.
But the life experience he has makes him a man as he has lived over 100 of years, so he has learned with time and that makes him a man, due to the experience he has gained.
However, when it comes to the relationship Bella has with Jake, he acts like a teenager, as he does not trust her around him completely and he stops her going to Jake, when she wants to. That is not trust, if he was a man, he would be grown up enough to trust Bella with Jacob and not stop her.
