Is Edward a Man?
We all know that Edward was 17 when he became a vampire.
1) Is Edward forever a teenage boy? Why or why not?
We also know that he has lived for over 100 years.
2) Does time and life experience make him a man? Why or why not?
IF you believe Edward is a man.

1: At heart, I think Edward is a teenager. It was said NUMEROUS times, they are stuck at whatever development they achieved. I would say, Edward learned enough, and was mature enough, for his time period, which translated close enough to ours. So I would call him a mature teenager. With 90's teenager tendencies LOL
2: I think TIME does contribute somewhat to his maturity, even his experiences. However, again, we're told it's VERY hard to change a Vampire. Meeting their "Blood Singer" however, shows they can be altered in a tangible way. So yes, in a way, time and life does contribute to making Edward a man, but, I wouldn't say ALL OF IT.
3: NO. I believe Edward became a man AFTER 17. Bella I feel was responsible for evolving Edward into a man. Before I saw him as a mature teenager. Gosh, JJ, this one is a tough call :) Good to see you out and about :)

1) Valid point about it being clear that they are stuck at the development that they were changed at (example immortal children). Also valid point that in the time period that Edward lived, a man or boy at the age of 17 was expected to be looking towards his future and developing skills that would make him a good husband and provider for his family. So I agree that there was much greater maturity to a 17 year old male then than there is now. (Not to say a 17 year old boy can not be mature now, I know several who are or were quite mature in our own culture).
2) It does make sense that time and experience would influence his maturity. I believe that the books demonstrate that Edward is able to learn from his mistakes and mature because of them.
3) So to clarify, since he became a man after 17, you believe it was Edward's time as a vampire and life experience that made him become a man? OR specifically Bella, and him meeting her, that made him into a man?

I believe it was due to Bella that Edward CHANGED so much. Since they met when he was 17, I reckon it was from then onwards that he began to "Man Up" in a noticeable way. I think Esme? said, that he had NEVER acted the way he did in all his 100+ Years, or, the years she has known him. I thikn it's a combination of all.

1). I have to agree with what has been stated, "stuck as a Vampire at what looks like 17". He's forced by society to blend in as an average teenager.
2) Now as far as experiences with life, or in Edward's case, forever existence. He has 100 years of experience which would give him more of a man stature than a teenage boy. He's had to make more adult decisions than the average 17 year old would have to do. Therefore, my conclusion is "yes" this does make him a man.
- Was he this before changed? Probably not, the century in which he lived prior did make him have a different perspective on age 17. But in no way did he have the experiences that 100 years of knowledge gave him. So the additional time on earth would have given him a greater impact on maturity.

I certainly understand that the time he spends on earth would continue to develop him as a person and he would mature into manhood. It would really stink if he had the hormonal and immaturity of a teenager for all of his existence.

I believe that as long as you can experience things then you never stop growing as a person. Edwards physical body may be frozen, but our knowledge that comes from experiences of life continue on. There for I think that Edward's mind is not the mind of a teenager but the mind of very wise man with out the side effect of being forgetful.

If you use the theory that their emotional growth other than experience-based things is stunted at that age, then yes. His hormone-esque reactions, reaction ability and impulses would all be like that of a seventeen year old boy, which is not always the best thing. He's likely more immature than he likes to show himself as being.
In my favorite vampire series, Armand is 500 years old, but was 17 when turned. He knows much and has seen much now, but he still reacts as though seeing things through seventeenyear old glasses. He tends to think bad things are the end of the world, fears being hurt, overreacts, lashes out when scared, does crazy things to his lover (Daniel), and tends to assume himself a bit righteous. All teenage traits, which can be observed in Edward if you look.
