Chapter 3: Camping

 

Jacob's POV:

Quil, Embry and I reached the beach, everyone was ready. As we were going on a hiking and camping trip for 4-5 days we had decided to take people of ages above 15. The young ones had groaned but they weren’t allowed. We went over to our side of friends. Sam, Paul, Jared, Emily stood on the opposite side of beach. Sam was of course leading the trip though our part of gang didn’t like it.

On our side stood Quil, Embry, Zac, Brian, Rosaline, Jennifer, Leah and I. We kinda didn’t like the other part. Leah’s cousin Emily was with Sam because he was in love with her and this had happened when Sam was with Leah. We all hated Sam for his ridiculous act of choosing Leah’s cousin when she was down at Leah’s for a visit over Leah. It hurt Leah very much and we all know that it still is painful to her to see her Sam with her cousin who was almost her own sister.

Our camping trip included meeting the Makkah reservation kids too. It would be great fun. A few kids of that place and our place would be meeting and would have a great time together. We were meeting in the forest that separated La Push and Makkah reservation.

“Com-on guys lets leave.” Sam commanded loudly.

We all started walking together. Sam was carrying his bag and also Emily’s. Though she wanted to take it away from him he didn’t allow her. He moved his fingers through her hair. It looked embarrassing to me so I stopped and allowed the rest to walk. They weren’t jobless like me to observe Sam and his girl. Quil and Embry were busy talking about bikes. Rosaline and Jennifer were gushing over some hot actor and the rest were also busy talking about different things. I let everyone go and to my surprise I found Leah doing the same and because of this we ended together. Oh! Yeah right! How could I forget? It would be only Leah who wouldn’t want to see Sam and Emily. I bit my lip. Poor Leah! We stopped till the others were a great distance ahead.

“Hey Leah,” I said. Now both of us were walking not to catch up the others but to keep them in view.

“Hey.” She murmured in a small voice. Leah was 18, the same age as me.

“Wassup?” I asked.

“The trip,” She answered like it was obvious. Yes it was obvious; I was actually trying to come up with a conversation, I was suddenly out of topics.

“How is Seth? I haven’t seen him for long.” I questioned. He little brother kind of idolized me and the Clearwaters’ visited Charlie often so we had become good friends.

“He is good. How is Bella?” she said formally. There was awkwardness between us.

“She is good too.” I answered.

“So what are you planning after school?” I asked casually.

“I m leaving La Push, I don’t want to hang on around here. I will join some university somewhere far.” She replied and sighed.

“Oh, nice,” I said in a low tone, the thought of her going somewhere far made me feel weird and sad. She laughed bitterly.

“You dating anyone?” she asked indifferently.

“Nope,” I said chuckling and continued, “But Bella’s friend Jessica is trying to make me say ‘will you go out with me Jess, I love you.’” I laughed.

“Really? How?” she said raised her eye brows.

“Aaah! She comes over with Bella and whenever I m around she looks at me with…with goo-goo eyes. She changes and her voice and does stuff like that.” I groaned.

“Suits you,” She teased chuckling.

“Yeah right, Bella teases me about that and you don’t join her,” I groaned again.

 

“Well that seems a bit difficult, because I will be.” She punched me playfully.

 

I was about to retort when someone yelled our names.

“Jacoooob, Leaaaah.” It was Quil.

We ran over to him and he looked at me and then at Leah and then at me again, I started feeling self conscious. He gave me a wicked smile.

“Sam says he wants everyone to be in a group from now, so I called you guys.” Quil said with an edge in his voice.

“Oh okay. Well, see you around Jake.” Leah said and ran over towards the girls, Rosaline and Jennifer.

 

“Yeah,” I said and stood looking after her.

I turned around and saw that Embry had joined Quil, and Quil was already whispering something in Embry’s ear and Embry’s face was also lit up with that wicked smile.

 

“What’s up with you guys?” I asked confused.

 

“What’s up with you huh?” Embry asked me.

 

“Seriously I have no idea what you guys mean,” I defended myself.

“See you around Jake,” both Quil and Embry said together in a girly voice. And then it hit me! They thought something was going on between me and Leah.

“Cut it out guys. It’s nothing like that.” I tried to say but my voice was drowned by their hooting.

I walked away but their teasing followed me. We reached there by 4 and it took us a quite a lot of time to put up our tents. The Makkah reservation guys still hadn’t dome so we just headed to collect the wood and set the camp up. Sam, Paul and Jared did most of the job for their group and finished it long before our group had finished. They sat on the ground joking and laughing.

 

“Hey Jake.” Brian said.

 

“Hmm,” I replied standing up. I had just finished the hammering the nail deep in the ground to stop the wind from blowing the tent away.

 

“Get some more wood from the forest. Will you?” he asked.

 

“Sure sure. Coming Embry?” I said.

 

“Na-h I m busy,” He said and gave me a wicked smile. I rolled my eyes; Embry was pretty much busy helping the girls.

 

I went into the forest and started breaking weak branches. I had almost fifteen sticks when I heard some whispering.

 

“When do you think we will-” It was Paul speaking. He stopped abruptly, I hid behind the tree, I shouldn’t have done that, I wasn’t prying but it was a reflex reaction. Just as I moved a bit my foot caught in a something and I fell sideways.

 

“What the hell are you trying to do? Trying to interfere in our business” Paul said angrily.

 

I stood up and didn’t bother to brush the mud of me.

 

“I wasn’t doing that.” I replied stubbornly which was of course true.

 

“Yeah right,” He said and advanced toward me grinning in the most unfriendly way.

 

My body stiffened and the tight hard fists were visible. But his was trembling and the grin became the most evil. No, it wasn’t a grin. I was something else, something which I couldn’t tell.

 

“Paul. Stop.” Sam ordered. Paul looked at him for a long time. Finally, he sighed and his trembling lessened and stopped.

 

“Your lucky day,” He smirked.

 

I gave a sarcastic laugh.

 

“Let’s go.” Sam ordered again and Paul followed.

 

I went back. Sighing I took the sticks and headed back to the camp.

 

The night had crept upon us but we weren’t going to waste any time sleeping. We had come here to enjoy. The Makkah reservation kids had arrived and we were trying to know each other better. Sam and his friends except the girls with Lial had gone some where after a part of group of the Makkah rez came here. All the sticks had been arranged and Leah and the girls were lighting the bonfire with the help of my generous friend, Embry. A new set of kids arrived from Makkah rez, mostly girls with a couple of guys. I saw Kim there. She belonged to La Push right? Then I saw her talking to a girl who looked very similar to her…maybe they were cousins.

 

After greeting them I went and sat over a rock tired. I just wanted to rest for a while. I was further away than the fire; it was a bit darker where I sat. The wind blew past me and I enjoyed the pleasant moon, I sat looking at it until I heard footsteps. A shadowy figure was closer, it was Leah.

 

“Hey Jake,” She said.

 

“Hi.” I said and moved to make place for her.

 

“So what are we going to do now?” she asked.

 

“Eat.” I laughed. I had been hungry.

 

“Yeah then?” she asked.

 

“Then we are going to have a bon fire. It is going to be fun.” I replied.

 

“Okay,” She answered not sounding enthusiastic at all. I wonder why she came knowing Sam was going to be here…I mean, Leah has very hard time whenever Sam is around. And willingly for her to come on a trip which Sam is in charge of is weird.

 

“Hey Leah do u have any plans for Bella’s birthday? I want it to be big, but I need someone to help me.” I asked her trying to replace the awkwardness.

 

“I will help; Bella, the party girl is going to love it.” She joked. I laughed with her. She knew Bella well.

 

“And you have to help me buy her a gift and stuff like that ok? I know what Bellsie likes but still-” I hesitated, I mean I just knew Leah…not very close and me asking her to do favors for me was maybe too forward?

 

“No worries,” She replied. I had really started to like Leah not in a way which Quil and Embry thought but as a friend. She was a really good friend, probably next to my best friends.

 

“Come let’s go.” She said and started walking and I followed her keeping my eyes open for Quil and Embry. For once luck was with me because Embry and Quil were flirting with Rosaline and Jennifer.

 

Just then Sam, Paul and Jared arrived looking all worked up. I wondered where they were.

 

We headed toward the food table. The Makkah kids had joined us and our groups were mixed. It was fun to joke together and be together again. We took our plates and headed at spots. We sat in circles commenting and talking about the things with the school teachers. Kim and I went together to get some more food, we stood and started filling our plates. I waited for Kim to finish leaning across the table, it would be rude if I left her and walked away.

 

Jared walked toward us, not looking up and just then he crashed with Kim. Everything from her plate fell down sideways. At last Jared looked up.

 

“’m sorry, I didn’t-” he stopped.  He stared at Kim! Like literally stare at her! As if he hadn’t seen anyone ever before! I couldn’t see Kim’s face but she too didn’t say anything. Both of them kept staring and I knew it would never stop so I cleared my throat.

 

Suddenly Kim jumped and gave me an apologetic smile, she turned took and new plate and started taking whatever came to her hand. She wasn’t being picky as before. Jared still stood there staring at her. Then Kim bent to pick up the food that had fallen, I started helping her.

 

“Let me help.” Jared said. He looked breathless. All the three of us cleaned up the mess. Jared never took off his eyes from Kim and she just blushed. After we cleaned up the mess that had managed to fall from the crash Kim and I headed back feeling extremely glad. It felt like those two were having a moment and I was spoiling it.

 

“What was that?” I asked her.

 

“I don’t know,” She whispered blushing furiously.

 

The group had been waiting for us, we distributed the food.

 

“What took you so long? If you hadn’t come now I would have gone in search of you guys.” Embry joked.

 

“Well nothing Jared came like a puffing dog, he wasn’t watching so he crashed into Kim and all the food fell.” I sighed.

 

Kim didn’t eat much, she kept jittering the whole time. But I didn’t say anything…it wasn’t my business.

 

. I sat on the highest rock and I could see Sam and his group eating, everyone except Jared. He kept looking in our direction. Probably searching for Kim…it was so weird.

Everyone had finished having their food so we gathered around the bon fire. Some of the Makkah rez guy had brought his guitar with him maybe he was a music nerd. This meeting of two reservations was sort of a reunion after there had been a between us and them over something. I wasn’t here when they fought but it was because of some Makkah rez guy Dan, he had been trading drugs with the La Push guys, well mostly children. Sam and his gang went and it resulted in fight. But the makkah rez guys didn’t believe us but at last they found that I had been Dan who was wrong so we decided end this fight and be friends again.

 

Music from the guitar began to fill the air. He was playing the tune which our elders had made, the traditional songs of La Push and Makkah rez. We started singing and started dancing around the bon fire it was so much fun. I had always been brought up in forks by Charlie and I never regretted it but I had never experienced these bon fires. Under the moon, by the fire we danced and sang. Soon the fire died down and we sat down in different groups.

 I got up in the morning and washed my face and brushed my teeth by the spring near by. We had to clean up everything last night to prevent forest fires. I picked up a soda can from the small plastic basket with I cubes, Quil and Embry arrived not at all looking sleepy I threw them a soda can each.

 

“Want to head for a walk guys?” I asked.

 

“Sure Jake,” Embry said

 

We headed to the opposite side and stood there on the cliff. Beneath it was the ocean; we could see the James Island easily from here.

 

“Wonder how it will feel when we jump from here.” Quil stated.

 

“Yeah a nice meal for the sharks,” I joked. The ocean looked dangerous here and too dark, exact place to live a life of shark. I chuckled.

 

“Yummy!” Embry slammed a high five.

 

“Real funny guys,” Quil rolled his eyes.

 

 We threw the cans in the garbage bag and headed into the forest.

 

“Guess what Jake?” Embry said.

 

“What?” I asked.

 

“We saw you and Leah coming out of a dark place yesterday.” Quil chuckled.

 

“Cut it guys.” I groaned. I started walking fast.

 

“Are you two going out? Did you kiss her? I mean you were in dark last night.” Embry questioned.

 

“Nothing happened and nothing will happen okay.” I shouted.

 

“She is just a friend and if I happen to like any one I will surely tell you guys, so stop guessing.” I felt my anger rise. Leah and my friendship was totally different. I didn’t like or want people to misunderstand it especially my best buddies.

 

“Okay-okay chill dude,” Embry put his hands up.

 

“Sorry man. We were just teasing.” Quil assured.

 

“Fine,” I said smiling a bit.

 

Now we came to a short slope, down was mud mixed with weed from last night’s rain. I turned back to go back.

 

“Now guess what Jake?” Embry said smiling.

 

I looked at Quil and he too was smiling, but this smile was different smile and I knew what they were going to do.

 

“No! You are not going to do that.” I said backing. I didn’t want them to push me in this mud. Not now.

 

“Yes we are!” Both of them grinned.

 

That was the last I heard because I fell in the mud. I didn’t hurt myself but I was totally covered in this mud not that I mind but there wasn’t enough water here to clean up. Then I got up, it wad only ankle deep but my face, shirt, hands and hair were covered in mud. I had fallen right at my face. Quil and Embry saw me and started laughing.

 

“You think you are going to get away huh?” I asked evilly.

 

I was about to climb up but I saw Quil and Embry gasp and I heard something behind me.

 

I turned and found a huge horse size…wolf?

 

 I gasped. I turned to go but I skidded and fell. The wolf just stood there shocked as I was. It looked intelligent, and there was a look of guilt in his eyes. Just then the howling started and I froze.

Chapter 4: Are you afraid?

 

Jacob’s POV:

 

I didn’t move even a bit. The wolf in front of me was huge. Very huge. Almost horse sized, what m I supposed to do?! I looked into its eyes; there was shock in them too. Something was different about these eyes, like I knew them. But I wasn’t sure.

 

“Jake.” I heard Quil whisper. I didn’t look up, or move. I didn’t want the wolf to take a snap at me. I wanted to yell to Quil and Embry- to run.

 

Just then the wolf’s head snapped toward its back, into the thick trees, I couldn’t see anything. But with that the wolf ran into the forest. And man it was fast! Almost invisible.

 

“Sorry Jake” I heard Embry say, he was by my side with Quil.

 

“Yeah man, it was just supposed to be a joke; we didn’t know a wolf would pounce up.” Quil explained.

 

“Sure sure. I don’t care.” I replied still lost.

 

“We better get going, the thing might come back.” Embry said looking into the thick trees.

 

“Scared Em?” I laughed nervously standing up and trying to brush off the mud. He didn’t say anything, but I could see the worry on his face had been replaced with a smile. He probably had thought I would get real angry at him.

 

We climbed up the slope and started walking towards the clearing.

 

“Are we going to say anything to others?” Quil asked.

 

“Yeah like they will believe us,” Embry said sarcastically.

 

“I don’t know.” I said thoughtfully. Was all this a dream? No it can’t be, it’s too real.

 

Dream? Yes, I had dreamt about this before but the wolf was different.

 

“We will just say little when they ask…okay?” Quil pressed on telling it to others.

 

“Sure sure,” I shrugged.

 

 

 

 

“Man I m hungry.” Quil said.

 

“Yeah me too,” Embry agreed. We were washing our faces and trying to dust off the mud off clothes and our hair.

 

“Caught up in a sand storm?” Leah crept behind us joking. Well this was new; it was very long since I heard Leah joke.

 

“You got it right,” Quil sarcastically.

 

“Hmm…so what really happened to you all?” she asked directly.

 

“We went for a walk, pushed Jake down in mud and then ‘lo’ magic there is a huge wolf in front of Jake.” Embry explained.

 

“Okay now. Enough with jokes. What really happened?” she said seriously.

 

“Lee we aren’t lying. We really did see a giant wolf.” I explained. As soon as I said Lee both Quil and Embry looked at each other but they behaved.

 

“Okay?” She said raising her eyebrows.

 

“Really we did see a wolf okay?” I said my temper rising.

 

“Ok-ok don’t get angry with me. It’s just a bit weird. I believe you alright.  ” She said putting her hands up in a surrendering position.

 

“Anyways, we all finished having breakfast.” She added looking a bit smug.

 

“WHAT?” Quil shouted.

 

“I M SO HUNGRY!” He added. Leah rolled her eyes.

 

“Don’t worry we saved you some.” She said still laughing. Quil relaxed.

 

“Com-on! Let’s go hog.” Embry said and led the way.

 

 

Most of the area had been cleared of people, many of them had gone up the hill and the others were down the hill and some were on the rocks, overall the place was almost empty.

 

After Leah gave us the food she left us and headed out to sit on the lonely hidden part of the hill. Actually there was a lot of food saved for us; Quil and Embry started eating it extremely delighted. I ate slowly trying to not look like I was watching Leah.

 

Just then we saw Sam, Paul and Jared entering. So again they were missing. I had been noticing them too much. Though we were here only for two days I saw that they would go out together some where far, only in the night and morning. And they wouldn’t take the other guys of their group with them.

 

I looked at them, Sam was looking angry, he was frowning and Paul looked angry too. Jared’s expression was different. He was apologetic; to me it looked like Jared had done something which had angered the rest of the group.

 

Suddenly all of the three looked at us three, it was a rhythmic motion. All of them did it together at once. I glared at them. Both Quil and Embry noticed and glared too.

 

The makkah rez guys had gone back, it was quite a crowd but our reunion was over and they left on good terms.

 

After lunch all of headed to the other side of the hill which had a better part of ocean facing it. We all headed to the part below the better side of the hill. But Sam stayed there with Paul and Jared. The rest of his gang came down with us. Just as we were walking we saw three guys fall into the sea howling. Their fall was so graceful. Though I didn’t like them, the jump was admirable!

 

“Show off.” Muttered someone, obviously from our group.

 

We reached the place and removed our shirts. We were wearing our swimming clothes, even the girls decided to do cliff diving.

 

One by one people started jumping. Wow the sea was going to be crowed. I waited till the jumping side was less crowded. I saw Leah standing there looking scared.

 

“What’s up Leah?” I asked walking up to her. She was wearing an orange bikini and it suited her very much. She looked beautiful. It was hard for me to take my eyes off her.

 

“I m not going to jump,” She whispered.

 

“Why?” I asked, I had never seen her so scared.

 

“I m scared of heights.” she said in a very low voice looking down.

 

“Oh…so that’s the big problem.” I said.

 

“Yes,” She looked up.

 

“Hmm…why don’t you jump with me? I mean holding my hand.” I suggested. I felt like a fool. I knew if Quil and Embry saw me doing this they would never let me forget this and the others would think something was going on between Leah and me. I looked at her; she was staring at me thoughtfully.

 

“Sounds good,” She said vaguely.

 

“Okay.” I smiled at her.

 

She took my hand and walked with me. The place was empty except for us. I took a deep breath. I saw her do the same thing.

 

“Ready?” I asked.

 

“Yes.” She said tightening her grip on my hand.

 

Her touch made my feel weird. Acting on some instinct, I came close to her; put my hand on her waist she looked up surprised but didn’t protest.

 

“There we go.” I said and jumped with Leah.

 

Both of us were shouting and then in few seconds we went right splash into the water.

I let go of her. Both of us went deep in water and then after few seconds we came back to the surface.

 

“Omg! Jacob!” She was breathless. She had a smile on her face; it was long since I did she her excited.

 

“That was awesome! We need to do that again.” she exclaimed and put her hands on my shoulders. I just smiled with her.

 

Suddenly I noticed that the whole place had gone silent. I turned around and saw that everyone was staring at us shocked. I looked around frowning. This was exactly that I had feared. They misunderstood me and turned back and continued to do whatever they were doing thinking we needed privacy. Sam was still looking at us.

 

“Sure lee, we will do that soon.” I said cheerfully. Both of us headed back to the place our gang was having fun.

 

We were playing water ball, in here and swimming and ducking each other. It was a lot of fun. Leah seemed happy, it was quite a change. Harry, Sue and Seth would be happy to her back to her old self. I know they were worried over her, even Seth was very worried, though he teased her and acted as if he didn’t care I could see the love he had for her. He was very protective and he loathed Sam. I observed Sam looking at her when he thought no one was seeing but he was wrong of course I saw him. He looked irritated, he shouldn’t infact he should be happy that for once Leah is happy after he left. Leah had been my friend since Bella left for Florida with her mom. Charlie used to come and leave me with Lee and go for fishing. And now there was a connection between us, I could feel it.

 

“Let’s race, let’s race back till the rock.” Quil shouted after a while. We were pretty much far now. As the place we jumped from wasn’t a so high just few meters we decided to climb back. La Push had never been so extreme. I smiled widely.

 

“Yeah man!” Embry added.

 

“You’re on dudes.” I said.

 

“Wooooo,” Quil howled.

 

Embry and I were the fastest of all but as soon as we reached closer he took over me. Staying in Forks had one negative impact, and because of this I lost…never mind I will come here every weekend and work on my swimming. I loved to swim.

 

We waited till the others joined us. The sun was setting and it was a beautiful view. Paul, Jared, Lial and Lillian were squabbling and Sam was in some corner with Emily kissing.

 

 

The sun set was beautiful. Wow. Leah stood with me in silence. Her hand linked with mine.

 

“Isn’t it beautiful?” she whispered.

 

“Yes.” I replied amazed at how much she had changed.

 

Then we turned back and started climbing the rocks. We were all good rock climbers.

Leah looked afraid but I assured her, “don’t worry nothing will happen just don’t look down while climbing.”

 

“Okay.” She said and took a deep breathe.

 

All of us headed up and then we changed our clothes.

 

At dinner both Leah and I sat at our lonely, enjoy the view spot. She looked very happy.

But I just hoped that this happiness would be there forever not just today.

 

“Leah you and Seth come down at Charlie’s when we go back…okay?” I asked.

 

“Sure. But is it necessary that Seth has to come?” she asked teasingly.

 

“Well the kid will enjoy.” I said.

 

“Hmm…we will be there.” She said.

 

“We will plan Bell’s birthday.” I gave a few details.

 

“Oh! With Bella there, I m sure she is not going to like it.” She smiled.

 

“What else do you expect her to do?” I laughed.

 

“We will definitely invite Jessica over.” She teased me.

 

“Oh you remember that.” I said, I vaguely remember telling her how dear Jessica fancied me.

 

“Sure I do…and maybe I can hook you guys up.” She said emphasizing each word.

 

“Yeah right only if you want to get kicked 20 times everyday.” I added laughing.

 

She continued to laugh. I stared at her. She looked so beautiful.

 

“What?” she said becoming conscious of my gaze.

 

“Nothing,” I said and turned away kind of blushing.

 

“Come let’s go.” I said and we walked away back to the camp.

 

Luckily Quil and Embry didn’t look up, they were lost in food and girls but Sam’s eyes watched us as we entered.
