Chapter 5: Flow of thoughts

 

Jacob’s POV:

 

Embry dropped me at Charlie’s place.

 

“Bye Jake,” He said leaning.

 

“Come on in,” I offered.

 

“Na-h, got to see mom, she will be waiting.” He shrugged.

 

“Okay…then bye.” My voice drooled. I was so tired, I wanted my bed. I walked toward the house with my bag dragging on the ground.

 

Just as I was about to ring the bell Charlie opened the door.

 

“Hey Jake!” he smiled.

 

“Hey Charlie!” I smiled at him. We hugged awkwardly and he let go then.

 

“We missed you around here. How was the trip? Did you enjoy?” he asked.

 

“Yeah it was good. We did all kinds of things, like cliff diving, rock climbing, trekking, etc.” I said enthusiastically.

 

“Come have some food,” Charlie moved in the kitchen.

 

“Where is Bella?” I asked as I followed him.

 

“She is in her room, probably didn’t hear you. Edward is here,” He said the last part grudgingly. Charlie kinda didn’t like Edward. Well, that makes two of us.

 

“Oh! I will go there after I eat something.” I murmured high enough for Charlie to hear.

 

“Sure…” Charlie said and then mumbled something.

 

We ate in silence, Bella had cooked chicken. Man it tasted too good. After I finished I took my bag and walked upstairs. I walked making the least noise, I wanted to surprise her.

 

I was just outside here room, I heard low music coming from inside. I put the bag down with a low thud. Hoping the door wasn’t locked from inside I pushed open the door.

Bella was sitting on the bed, her hair tangled and Edward was leaning back. It looked as if he had backed off, right now. I felt kind of embarrassed; it looked as if I had interrupted something. Well, in real I had! God! I was such an idiot! Bella hadn’t looked back; she was still staring at Edward.

 

“Why did you-” she started angrily. Edward gave her a sheepish smile and looked at me, Bella turned.

 

“Hey Bells!” I said nervously yet excited to see her.

 

“Jake! You are back!” she got down from her bed and walked toward me.

 

“I know that.” I joked. She hugged me.

 

“I missed you,” She complained.

 

“Yeah me too,” I said and released her.

 

“Hello Jacob.” Edward said politely.

 

“Hi.” I said a bit stiff. I wasn’t really comfortable speaking to him, though I tried very hard it was kind of impossible, like it was in my genes.

 

“How was your trip?” he continued.

 

“It was fun,” I replied trying to make my voice friendly. I remembered the story which Harry had told me about Edward last year. It was before Bella came, Seth wasn’t home so Harry had decided to tell me what the tribe thought about these Cullen’s, he had asked me not to tell anyone, I had promised. But as I didn’t really believe this crap I told Bella some part of it.

 

Edward stiffened.

 

“Okay, I gotta go…good night Jacob,” He nodded.

 

“Yeah…night,” I yawned.

 

“I will come with you, Jake you stay in your room I will be back in seconds.” Bella said and walked behind him.

 

“Minutes not seconds,” I corrected in a murmur as Bella went down.

 

I walked in my room; it was as I had left it. I threw my bag at a side. I went into the bathroom, washed my face and changed my clothes into a track and a muscle t-shirt.

 

I went and lay in my bed and waited for Bella to come. I didn’t close my eyes, afraid that I would fall asleep.

 

“Hi again,” I heard an excited voice, obviously it was Bella.

 

I sat up and smiled.

 

“So?” I asked.

 

“Nothing, just wanted to talk.” She replied.

 

“Hmm…how was school?” I asked. Thank god it was Saturday. I would sleep late tomorrow.

 

“Boring,” She rolled her eyes.

 

“How come you are early? I thought you wouldn’t be coming until on Tuesday.” She said. She sounded unhappy and I could guess why.

 

“Well we just didn’t have much food left and we had done everything we planned so we just left.” I said.

 

“Hmm,” She said looking at the window.

 

“Not happy?” I asked.

 

“Yeah kinda, I was hoping you won’t be able to plan the ‘party’.” She confessed.

 

“Ha! Just as I thought,” I said victoriously and then continued, “Don’t worry Bells I would have done it even if I arrived on your birthday.” I said laughing.

 

“Why Jake? I don’t want to celebrate.” She said sadly. I would have listened to her if I didn’t have better reasons.

 

“Nothing doing! This is your first birthday here and I want to do it grandly.” I explained.

 

“Ugh I hate you.” She said exasperated.

 

“Oh no…you wont do that.” I knew Bella way too well though we hadn’t been together for a long time. She didn’t reply. She looked angrily at me.

 

“And by the way Leah will be coming here, we will plan it together.” I continued.

 

“Oooh Leah.” She teased smiling widely at me.

 

“No not you too.” I groaned.

 

“There is really nothing between you too?” she asked seriously.

 

“Yeah there isn’t.” I snapped at her. She of all the people would know.

 

“Okay-okay,” She out her hands up.

 

“Okay Jake I will leave now. Good night.” She smiled.

 

“Sweet dreams.” I smiled back.

 

“You bet.” She said and left closing the door and switching off the light.

 

I closed my eyes and slumber dragged me deep.

 

 

I opened my eyes and bright sunlight greeted me through the windows, wow this was unusual. I lay down in my bed, I felt stiff. I didn’t want to go to school and then I remembered it was Sunday. I finally got out of bed and put on some music, Eminem’s Stan started playing. I removed the clothes from my bag to put them to wash; staying alone with Charlie had made me responsible in doing my chores like laundry, grocery shopping, etc. Apart from cooking I could run the house on my own, it was a blessing that Bella came to stay with us; neither of us could cook properly.

 

I put the dirty clothes in the washing machine with some washing powder and started it.

 

Then I went back to the bathroom, and brushed my teeth. First I needed to eat something.

 I was damn hungry. I went down…it was eerily quiet.

 

“Hey Bellsie,” I said as I entered the kitchen.

 

“Hey.” She said looking up from her cereal.

 

“Nice day huh?” I commented getting out my bowl and putting the cereal in it.

 

“Yeah,” she dragged the word, she sounded low. I sat down opposite to her, she sounded low and she looked unhappy.

 

“I thought this was your kinda day.” I said raising my eyebrow.

 

“Yeah it is,” She said looking down.

 

“Edward’s not coming?” I guessed.

 

“No he’s not,” She said blushing a bit. I knew her so very well.

 

“Oh Bella! Com-on! There is a life possible when Edward is not around.” I said dramatically, in this process spilling the milk on my shirt. God! I was becoming clumsy.

 

Bella burst out laughing. At least I had changed her mood. I decided to eat without doing any acts.

 

“Leah had called,” She said after a while.

 

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I almost yelled. I shouldn’t have done this, because Bella was staring at me raising her eye brows now.

 

“I mean-I mean what did she say?” I changed my tone.

 

“She is coming down at 10. She is bringing Seth too,” She said in a strange voice.

 

“Oh okay.” I said and then I looked at the clock. Crap! It was 9:30, I still needed to get ready, I was a total mess and I probably was stinking. I stuffed the rest cereal in my mouth and drank the milk from the cup and again spilled some of the milk on my shirt.

 

“Ew what are you doing?” Bella said making a face.

 

I didn’t bother to reply; I headed straight to my room and then banged the door and shut the door. I set my best clothes on the bed; they were my sunny day’s clothes, a muscled t-shirt and a cotton cargo. To Bella I probably looked like a girl running around to look beautiful as soon as she got the news that her boy friend was picking her up for a movie. But I had to look good, not stinking bad in front of Leah.

 

I took a shower a fast but clean one. I wrapped a towel around my waist. My hair was dripping wet. I hadn’t grown my hair long like the rest of the La Push guys but yet it was neck-length, I needed to get a hair cut soon a short, crisp one.

 

I wore my clothes and dried my hair and tied it.

 

“Bella,” I called walking down again, she was washing the dishes.

 

“Wow!” Bella said as she looked at me.

 

“Always a tone of surprise,” I teased her.

 

“What did you do to yourself?” she pretended to be shocked.

 

“Nothing,” I was actually feeling shy! Would Leah like it?

 

“Jake! You really must like Leah!” she had hit the nail. I couldn’t think of anything funny enough.

 

“I don’t.” I said at last.

 

“Com-on Jacob who are you kidding?” she asked.

 

“I don’t like her.” I pressed on that point.

 

“Yeah right!” she rolled her eyes.

 

“So who do you want to invite huh?” I said changing the topic.

 

“For what?” She asked.

 

“For your birthday of course,” I teased her; nothing could stop me from teasing her.

 

“Jake do we have to do this?” she pleaded again.

 

“Yup we do I already told ya.” I folded my hands across my chest.

 

“I m not going to talk to you,” She grunted.

 

“Hey Bellsie,” I moved my hand through her hair. She didn’t reply. I really didn’t understand the fit she was throwing over this! Come on! She was turning 18! Not 100!

 

“We haven’t had you here for years; I don’t even remember celebrating your birthday. Let ME and Charlie celebrate and make up for all those missing years when you were not around. We missed you here. We love you and please you also know Charlie wants desperately to celebrate your birthday. Don’t do this to him. Don’t do this to me, don’t do this to us.” I ended my speech but whatever I had said was true from my heart.

 

Bella’s expression had softened.

 

“Oh! Jacob.” She said and hugged me, I hugged her back.

 

“I never saw it through your way, fine I will celebrate but it won’t be too grand.” She said in a low voice.

 

“Cool!” I exclaimed letting go of her.

 

Just then the bell rang, Leah and Seth had arrived.

 

I went and opened the door. Leah was standing there, she was smiling and her eyes were shining beneath her thick eyelashes, she had some color in her cheeks. Wow! Since when did I become so poetic?

 

“Hey!” she said in her soft and warm voice.

 

“Hi.” I breathed.

 

“Dude! Are you calling us in or not? I m dripping in water here?” I heard an annoyed voice…Seth.

 

“Why?” I said still smiling sheepishly at Leah.

 

“It’s raining.” Seth said desperately. Really? I thought the sun was out. Maybe it went back in. I didn’t care.

 

“Hey Lee-” I heard Bella say creeping behind me.

 

“Come on in-” she said pushing me. And I started recovering.

 

“Whoa! Thank god you came Bella. Jacob decided to do all the talking by letting us stand outside.” Seth’s voice was vague to me. I heard his voice faint; probably he went to the kitchen with Bella.

I didn’t look around to confirm, I was still staring at Leah. She gave me a smile and started removing her raincoat. She hung the coat on the stand and turned towards me. She was wearing an orange body fitting sweater and black skinny jeans.

 

“Whoa…you look good.” I said out loud.

 

“Err thanks.” she said blushing a bit.

 

She turned back and started to walk away. I stood there for a minute and then I followed her when I felt that I would remain my own self and not act sheepish. God! What was wrong with me?

 

“Ready for the party Bella?” I heard Leah asking Bella as I entered.

 

“Of course, I love parties especially when they are held for Me.” she said with fake enthusiasm. Everyone started laughing.

 

“I will order a pizza and then let’s start the planning and later watch TV.” I said.

 

I finished ordering the pizza and then headed in the living room. Seth and Bella were leaning against the triple seat sofa and on the single seat Leah was leaning. She had a notepad and a pen in her hand. I went and sat down leaning against the sofa opposite to her.

”First let’s plan the guest list…okay?” Leah asked.

 

“Okay.” I said.

 

“Yeah okay…but I m calling only people who I know.” Bella interrupted. I made a face; she glared at me so I nodded.

 

“Mike, Jessica, Angela, Ben, Tyler, Katie, Lauren, Marshall, Alice, Edward Mmm I guess that’s fine.” She stopped.

 

“That’s all?” I said raising my eyebrows.

 

“Yes…and you can call your La Push gang.” She said stubbornly.

 

“Fine,” I replied.

 

“You wrote down the names Leah?” I asked looking at her.

 

“Yeah…next is cake.” She said.

 

“That would be a huge chocolate pastry.” I said and she wrote down.

 

“Drinks and food,” She announced.

 

“Soda, chips, and other stuff we find in the bakery.” I said.

 

“Okay…so you are going to have a party here right?” Leah asked.

 

“Yes. We will have it on the lawn.” Bella said looking at Leah.

 

“We need to get the decorations too.” Seth added excited. I had almost forgotten him; he was nibbling a chocolate bar.

 

“Yeah and them some cool music also.” I added.

 

“Sure.” Leah wrote down. She was one of the best planners in La Push.

 

The pizza was delivered soon…we ate it and then watched a movie. I didn’t even know what the movie was about. The whole time I was conscious of Leah…she was indeed too beautiful.

 

 

I woke up in the morning tired. It was Monday which meant I had to go to school.

 

Bella’s birthday was day after tomorrow and crap I still hadn’t bought her anything. I better take Leah with me today, to the mall at P.A.

 

I quickly brushed my teeth, wore my clothes, gelled my hair, grabbed my bag and arranged some books with my wallet and mobile and headed downstairs.

 

Bella was already down with Charlie, they were having pan cakes and milk.

 

“Good morning sleepy head.” Bella called cheerfully as I entered.

 

“Good morning Miss sunshine!” I replied. Charlie headed to the basin.

 

“Kids I have extra work, Mark and I have to do some patrols so I won’t be back till 9. Bye, I will leave now.” Charlie said wearing his jacket and then grabbed his gun.

 

“Sure sure.” I muttered yawning.

 

“Bye dad.” Bella said smiling at him.

 

“So what plans do ya have tonight?” Bella asked, she seemed somewhat excited.

 

“Mmm…I will be going out to the mall.” I said hesitatingly.

 

“Will be late?” Bella asked in a nonchalant way, but I could see through her pretense.

 

“Yeah I guess.” I answered raising my eyebrows suspiciously.

 

“Hmm…” she said and then started blushing.

 

“What’s up with you?” I said confused.

 

“Nothing,” She mumbled. They way she blushed made it look it would be better not knowing. She took her bowl and turned her face.

 

Just then I heard the bell ring.

 

“It’s Edward I guess.” Bella said and ran towards the door grabbed her back pack and headed out waving at me with same excitement.

 

“Who else!” I smirked. Then it hit me. Maybe Bella wanted Edward to come over so that she could spend a little more time with him. No Charlie and no I so that meant…ugh why was even thinking about this. Today I will have to invite the people attending to Bella’s party.

 

It wasn’t so much fun at school; I went to my locker and got some necessary books.

 

First period was English with Bella and Edward. So I went down the hall, I opened the door on my right.

 

“Good morning Mr. Black, thank you for attending my class not on time.” He said sarcastically, I heard everyone giggle.

 

“Sorry sir.” I muttered though I didn’t care. I went and sat down next to a girl called Casey. She was a total punkish kind of girl; she always wore black, purple and orange combinations. We were just class friends. Bella was sitting with Edward behind me. She smiled as I looked back.

 

The class soon got over and my next class was history with Alice. I went to the class a little early this time; I had five more minutes till bell rang.

 

Alice was sitting alone so I joined her.

 

“Hey.” I said.

 

“Hello.” She said in a grudging voice. Wow what had I done?

 

“Wassup?” I asked.

 

“Nothing,” She said in a snappy way.

 

“Hmm…well you know we are holding a party for Bella on Wednesday so I was just wondering if you could come by.” I asked hesitatingly.

 

She seemed to think deeply.

 

“When is the party?” she asked.

 

“Seven.” I answered.

 

“Okay.” She beamed like I had said the magic words.

 

“You know even I have some plans for Bella but I haven’t told her anything, so after your party gets over, I will take her to my house, Carlisle and Esme want to see her.” she continued in her high soprano voice.

 

“Sure sure.” I said smiling.

 

“Hey bring Edward also,” I said knowing I hadn’t invited him myself. Anyway, Bella would have told him.

 

“Yeah right like he is going to be left behind on Bella’s birthday.” She laughed.

 

It was a standing joke among us, wherever Bella was Edward went. They were inseparable forces of nature.

 

The rest of the morning passed away in a haze and then came lunch period.

 

The lunch at school sucked.

 

I took some pizza and soda with some ketchup and headed to our usual table. Our table was a huge one, though we sat together there was an invisible line dividing us. All of the gang was here, I took my usual seat and then in a clear voice I said.

 

“Hey guys listen.” They all fell silent so I continued, “well we are holding a party for Bella’s birthday on Wednesday so you all are invited, hope you all come.” I ended.

 

Suddenly there was babble and excitement around the table and I heard many ‘yeah’s’, ‘sure’s’.

 

The day finally ended when the last period’s bell rang. I sighed, I was almost dead.

 

I drove fast and headed home. On the way I called Leah’s landline. Seth picked up the phone.

 

“Hello.” He said in his usual cheerful voice.

 

“Hey Seth! It’s me Jacob.”

 

“Hey Jake!”

 

“Is Leah at there?”

 

“Yeah wait I will call her.”

 

Then I heard ‘Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh. It’s Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakee’ I smiled.

 

“Hey.” I heard a soft voice; it was Leah’s of course.

 

“Hey Lee,” I said my voice softening.

 

“What’s up?” she asked.

 

“Well I need to get Bella a gift and I really need your help.” I babbled.

 

“Sure…you need me to come over to your place?” she asked.

 

“Well not really, I will pick you up in let’s say half an hour.” I said hesitatingly.

 

“Okay I will be waiting.” She said.

 

“Bye.” She said.

 

“See you,” I muttered and closed my phone.

 

I reached home; I was dead tired I just wanted to sleep. But I had a job to do so I pulled myself up; I washed my face and changed my t-shirt. I didn’t want to look like garbage when I meet her. I ate some cold sandwiches. Ha yummy.

 

I went and took my money, infact I had a lot of money, I had a little garage kind of thing for myself here at Charlie’s and I was open for repairs, so if anything went wrong with people’s cars here in forks they came to me. Dowling’s place was way too costly for them.

 

I took a couple of ten dollars and a fifty dollar note.

 

I will probably take Leah to some restaurant a nice one.

 

Feeling exhilarated I realized that Leah had taken completely over my mind.
