Everyone knows the story of Dorothy going "Somewhere over the rainbow", and ending up in Oz.
Well, what about the wicked witch of the west? Well, here her name is Elphaba. And we all remember her sister Glinda the good witch (perhaps not...) And you will meet her other sisters too, Fauna and Mabel. They are all after the ruby red slippers, but for a different reason than we think.
(Not quite a prologue, but know this will happen later in the story.)
I was covered in guilt. I had a munchkin tied up in a corner. Gah, why did Glinda have to make this harder than it needed to be? She had always been so immature.
Dorothy, a purely harmless girl. It's not her fault that the slippers won't come off her. I just didn't know how else to get them off. I sighed in dismay, I had to kill a helpless girl from the foreign planet of Kansas, when all I wanted was her shoes.
Boo-Hoo for Dorothy, I thought reluctantly.

Chapter 1. Ruby Slippers
I had always been ‘the family freak’. I grew up with three sisters. Mabel, Fauna, and Glinda. Last comes me, Elphaba. So, most of you know the story of poor little Dorothy plopping her home down on my dear old sister Mabel. Yeah, and Mabel had the ruby slippers.
Now, most of you wonder, who cares if the slippers are ruby, or scarlet? Well, it does matter. See, we were all born witches. Our mother died. Before she was killed, she was making a potion to create eternal life.
So, as soon as she plops dead, perfect little Glinda has to grab the potion, and Fauna fights for it too. Mother wrote that Mabel would get it if she died, but of course none of us cared at the time.
I was only trying to get it for Mabel. Not that I favored her over my other sisters, it’s just that I respect our mother rather than the others.
“You’re a witch!” Fauna shouted at Glinda, her face going pale white, almost as much as her hair.
“Well, so are you!” Glinda said louder, her face going red, trying to grasp the bottle from Fauna’s tiny pale hands.
I was getting a piercing headache as Glinda and Fauna kept bickering. It was one of those moments when a mortal would say I need an aspirin.
“Glinda, Fauna, I don’t go around saying I’m a good witch, when I disrespect my own mother!” I shouted at them, and they stopped screaming.
“I mean who do you think you are? You aren’t good if you yell at everyone.” I said my voice loud, but not quite yelling. Glinda looked at me with her navy blue eyes, apologetically. Fauna pulled her lips into her mouth.
Suddenly Glinda winced. She grasped my only trophy for anything. It was for doing a healing spell in limited time. I’d always loved it, a leg, with a bandage on its knee, made of glass that looked like ice, my name, etched into it in the most beautiful lettering.
Except, when I looked at Glinda holding it, I saw her with dark hatred. She put on a devilish grin.
“If you call me a lying witch ever again, I crush this.” She said, hands shaking. Fauna and I were silent, and then Glinda put the trophy down. Glinda had a crazy look in her eye, like a murderer.
She gave Fauna a good punch in the cheek. Fauna trembled to the ground, dropping the bottle with a loud bang. I felt a pang of emotion in the room. This was where Mabel had to waltz in.
I can’t even explain the look of shock on Mabel’s eyes. She knew exactly what happened, you could see it in her eyes.
“You… you crushed all of mother’s dreams for us you know that?” Mabel’s face was deadpan, her voice scratchy in disgust.
“How do you all feel about yourselves now?” Mabel’s voice got all deep, like when someone would turn into a demon in a novel. Except, Mabel turned green.
“Mabel!” Fauna piped, I was surprised she could even speak. Mabel mumbled words under her breath I couldn’t understand. The spill of the potion lifted, as if there were no gravity pulling it down.
Glinda grasped my hand, instead of resisting like I normally would, I grasped it quickly like there was no tomorrow. Mabel’s whole face glowed, not in a fairytale way, it was really scary. The potion flew all over her favorite ruby red slippers.
She put them on, and rushed off. There was a very long silence between Glinda, Fauna, and I after Fauna got up off the floor. Then we all opened our mouths to talk.
I hope you enjoyed the first chapter! Well, I know it's short, but I promise the next will be longer!
