The Twilight Saga

In this story, Edward is a member of the Volturi and Bella lives in Forks as a human. When Bella discovers that her best friend is a vampire, she isn't sure she can take much more shock, but then something happens that will lead to a life-changing series of events which will intertwine her and Edward's fate...

Chapter 1

They were closing in on us, cloaked in black robes that draped to the cold floor. I could see their faces under their dark hoods, though the sky was pitch-black, thanks to my vampire-enhanced vision. I clung to my mother, protecting her, and she cowered into my shoulder. I had come this far with her, I wasn't about to lose her.

I had heard of them, of course. The Volturi, guardians of the vampire's secret. The body of the man my mother had just killed was lying on the cobbled street beside us, his still flowing blood calling to me, but I knew that now was not the time. One of them stepped forward, a girl of about fifteen, with blonde hair and ruby eyes.

"You know of the law, I presume?" she asked tonelessly. I could hear her thoughts running through her mind. She was desperate to use her deadly power on us, to see us writhe in pain as she looked upon our tortured faces. I nodded, knowing not to make her agitated. "I was not speaking to you," she snapped, and her head whipped in my mother's direction.

My mother was quite old for a vampire, though the transformation didn't make her look so. She had bronze hair that went to her shoulders and a kind face, which was contorted with fear under the merciless girl's gaze. She nodded hurridly, and I knew what was coming next.

With blinding speed, I threw myself in front of her and took a defensive stance, ready to fight to the death to protect her. I growled menacingly, but the faces of the Volturi were unfazed. The girl blinked and I was on the ground, pain ripping through my body, worse than the transformation. I faintly heard my mother gasp, but it was all I could do to not fall apart at the ferocity of the agony. I screamed and writhed, begging madly for it to stop.

And then it was over, as quickly as it had started. I lay there for a moment to get over my shock, then got shakily to my feet.

"I'll do anything," I said rashly. "Anything to protect her."

The girl, who was called Jane, according to her twin's thoughts, looked me up and down as if she were buying a horse. Her expression remained unchanged, but her thoughts showed her consideration. She wondered if I had any powers beyond that of a normal vampire, and I knew this my be my only chance.

"Yes, I do. I can read minds." Jane and the three other Volturi looked a little shocked at my proclomation, but they had seen it before; their leader, Aro, could read minds as well.

"We will bring him to see Aro, and see what he thinks," Jane concluded, and I sighed with relief. I held my mothers hand as we made our way up to the castle and I could feel her shaking slightly. We had been through a lot together.

Ten years ago, I had been attacked by a vampire who spared my life and allowed the change to happen. My father had recently passed away and it devestated my mother to have her only son gone, too. After a few years, when I had gained control, I returned to my home and changed my mother so that she wouldn't have to be alone. We had been nomad vampires ever since.

And now we were trapped. We were led into a large circular marble room and the four vampires removed their hoods at the sight of their three elders. Jane walked up to him and put her hand in Aro's, and a flood of thoughts and images rushed through his head, Jane's thoughts. He saw what had happened in the alley and thanked her. She walked back to stand next to her brother and Aro looked at me.

"So, we share some gifts," he said simply, his posture calm and unrevealing. His thooughts, however, revealed how intrigued he really was. "And you wish to protect your mother. Well, I have a solution that will work very well for the both of us. You join us, help us protect the law, and we spare your mother."

"Done," I said immediately, and I felt my mother's hand tighten on mine. I gazed at her frantic expression and heard her desperate thoughts. She didn't trust the Volturi, she didn't want me to be a part of this.

"I'll do whatever I have to to keep you safe," I told her firmly, and she knew that there was no convincing me.

I turned back to Aro and saw him motion to a woman standing beside him. She gazed at me intently and I only had a split-second warning from her thoughts before she used her power on me.

I saw sense in the world. Of course joining the Volturi was the right thing to do! Who cared about my mother, she didn't matter. She had broken the law, killing her was the right thing to do. Aro knew what was best. I began to forget my past, focus on the future that I could have with the Volturi. I would be powerful, more powerful than any vampire who thought otherwise. I felt myself slipping away, and I looked on proudly as they tore apart my mother, making things right once again.

Chapter 4 Continued (because it was so short)

Charlie's funeral was drawing closer each day and I wasn't sure if I was looking forward to it or dreading it. It would be good to have some closure, but it would also be a very emotional experience. So far Alice had said nothing about me moving out of her house, but I knew I couldn't stay there. She was such a great friend, though, comforting me and making me laugh. It was always fun when Emmett challenged her to a fight and tiny little Alice won.

I woke up on the morning of the funeral to find Alice getting my outfit picked out like she did every morning. I took a shower while I waited for her and got dressed in silence. Then I noticed something about the necklace I was about to put on.

"Alice?" I called, and she came into the bathroom seemingly before I said her name.

"It's a Cullen crest necklace," she informed me, seeing what I was going to ask. She had a smile on her face as she leaned against the door frame. "So that you know you're one of the family now."

I didn't know what to say. I looked at Alice's own Cullen crest on her gray velvet choker, then back at the one in my hand. A smile spread slowly across my face and I hugged her tightly, trying to put a lot of unsaid things into it. She hugged me back and when I pulled away I found that she had somehow put my necklace on me without my noticing. She laughed at the look on my face and danced out of the room. (Bella's outfit:

The funeral was as emotional as I expected, but at least Charlie had a closed casket so I couldn't see. I cried on Alice's shoulder as people gave speeches and blessings, then some more when his coffin was lowered into the ground. We drove home in silence as I looked out the window through the rain, waiting impatiently for the day to end.

Chapter 5

I walked into the throne room as I had many times before and took off my hood at the sight of my masters. I saw Chelsea and nodded to her. She ignored me, but this wasn't out of character. I owed Chelsea many things, for she had used her exquisite gift to show me where my loyalties should lie, what the right thing to do was. Because of her I was now a member of the Volturi and had been for many years.

"You wanted to see me, master?" I addressed Aro, and he nodded slowly, a somber look on his face.

"My friends, in the US, they have crossed a line, so to speak," he explained. I listened out of politeness, though I knew what he was going to say. "They have allowed a human to know their secret and, as if that wasn't bad enough, they have allowed the human girl to live with them," he said in disgust. "I would like you to take care of it for me."

"As you wish, master."

"Take good fighters with you, they are powerful and will do whatever it takes to protect the girl."

I selected Alec, Felix, and five more, which would be more than enough. Alec's power alone would be enough to take them all out. (NOTE: IN THIS FAN FICTION BELLA'S MIND IS NOT PROTECTED!!!) We left that night and took a plane to Seattle, then ran from there to the Cullen's large white house. I inhaled deeply and smelled the human girl coming up the driveway, and I informed the others. We listened for the car and when it pulled up to the house with another vehicle behind it, we seized the opportunity.

We positioned ourselves at the doors and ripped them off the car. They stopped immediately and the vampires leapt out, their golden eyes glowing with fury. We could have easily fought them off, but I didn't want it to be too messy, so I motioned to Alec.

"No!" screamed a little girl vampire. "Stop! Not Bella!" I assumed that Bella was the human girl, but I carried on mercilessly. The vampires tried thought about taking Bella and running before Alec's power began to take effect, so I ordered my accomplices to hold the strange vampires down. They were held immediately and I decided that as long as they weren't a threat, only the girl would have to be numbed. I told Alec this and he nodded, then a white mist crept along the ground in a focused line.

Because of my angle, I had not yet been able to see the girl, but I did hear her collapse as Alec numbed her mind. The little girl vampire cried as she watched her friend, and I stepped slowly toward her. But when I was able to see the girl, I stopped dead in my tracks.

She was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She was sprawled out on the grass, her dark hair fanned around her head and her face peaceful. She looked so innocent, so helpless, and suddenly everything was clear again. Chelsea's power wore off and I remembered my mother's screams of agony as I let the Volturi rip her apart. I was not one of them, I would not let them kill this gorgeous human or her family.

I spun abruptly on my heel and fixed Alec with a murderous glare. He and the others looked thoroughly taken aback.

"Let them go," I growled, and they stared at me blankly. "I said let them go!" They dropped the Cullens as if they were hot coals, all of them looking shocked. Bella still lay motionless on the ground behind me. "Go back to Aro and warn him to never harm this family again! Assure him that the girl will be changed. Stop it, Alec." Alec lifted his power and Bella gasped as the Volturi ran off in a stunned mental silence.

I crouched down next to Bella, who was shaking from head to foot. "Are you okay?" I asked softly, and she stared at me in fear.

"Don't hurt me, please!" she begged, and it nearly broke my heart. "Don't do that thing again!"

"I won't hurt you," I assured her gently, but she didn't seem convinced.

"Listen to him, Bella," said a voice from behind me, and when I looked I saw the small vampire. "You can trust him." Ah, she was a future seer, called Alice, according to the thoughts of the others. Bella's thoughts were still doubtful of me, fearing that I would hurt her and her family, and I decided to try later.

"You have to change her," I told the leader, a lean blond vampire by the name of Carlisle. "It's the only way to keep her safe, and I don't have the control to do it." He nodded, but his thoughts were quizzical.

"Why did you spare us?" he asked. "It is unlike the Volturi to change their minds like that."

"I am not one of them!" I spat, disgusted at the thought. Then I sighed. "I don't know what stopped me, but..."

"He's in love!" Alice squealed, and everyone including me was stunned into silence. "Don't you see, Carlisle?" she said, her face lit up with a dazzling smile. "He's falling in love with Bella!"

Carlisle looked at me with half confusion, half wonder. "Well, I can't have someone who drinks human blood in my house-"

"I'll change," I said immediately. "I'll switch to animal blood, just...please...I can't be without her." I was more sure of it with each passing second. I glanced over at Bella, who was being comforted by Esme and hadn't heard any of this conversation. "I'm going to hunt, and while I'm gone you have to change her, it's the only way." And with that I ran off, going to kill my first buck ever.

Chapter 6

The bronze-haired vampire ran off and Carlisle came over to me. "Bella, we have to make you one of us," he told me. "It's for your own safety."

I nodded mutely. The shock was still catching up to me about how narrowly I had just avoided death and his words didn't really register in my mind. He lead me into the house and told me to lay down on a table. I obeyed, thinking about Charlie, and without warning fire was ripping through my veins, more intense than I could imagine, and I screamed aloud, thrashing, trying to put the fire out as tears poured down my cheeks.

"Kill me!" I shrieked, but when I opened my eyes no one was there, I was alone in the office, being burned to death. What was happening? Was I even dying? When would it end?!?!

I lay there for what felt like a lifetime, though according to the clock it had only been an hour. I shrieked and writhed on the table, begging to no one to stop the insane agony.

Suddenly a cold hand was pressed to my cheek, partially quenching the fire there. I opened my eyes and saw, to my great surprise, the face of the bronze-haired vampire.
Oooh. . . so good!
