The Twilight Saga

Ok so I wrote this...this is Edwards point of view when Rosalie tells him that Bella is dead. There is more on the way but this is the start. Comment...hope you like it!!!=D

I can’t believe I’ve been following a false lead, And all the way to South America. How could I be so naïve? I would find Victoria; I wouldn’t stop until her ashes were blowing away with the wind.
I decided that it was time to go back to Denali. I’ve been gone for quite some time following Victoria and Esme worries so easily. The truth is I missed my family but I haven’t been the same since we left Forks. My world had that same starless night hanging over it that was in place before I met her. I know that I left her and I was hoping that she wouldn’t have feelings for me still. But I couldn’t help but still love her.
I wanted her to stay safe no matter what. That’s part of the reason that I’ve been tracking Victoria. Poorly, but I have been trying with every cell of my body to find her and eliminate her. Victoria was the only trace of my world that was chasing Bella and threatened her possibility of a normal life.
I arrived back in Denali only to find out from Tanya that Carlisle and Esme were off hunting. But where was Alice? She was always here. Maybe she was hunting too but Tanya didn’t mention that Alice was with my parents.
I went back to Tanya’s house and decided to sit. I wasn’t tired or my muscles didn’t ache I just wanted a peaceful place to relax and breath for a while.
When I walked through the door I saw Rosalie sitting on the couch. Her face looked upset or wary. I couldn’t really tell by her expression. But what I could see was that she had news, and it wasn’t good. Her thoughts were silent.
“Edward,” she said out loud in a cautious tone.
I read her thoughts before she spoke the words. My mind went blank and shock ran across my face. My face turned a shade whiter and I began to shake uncontrollably.
“Edward I’m so sorry, I…”
I hit the floor. I was on all fours sobbing tearlessly and all I could think was that she can’t be gone. Not her, she just can’t be.
“Alice saw her jump and took off. She didn’t want me to tell you but I felt that you of all people needed to know.” I couldn’t tell if she was truly sorry or not. My mind was too dark and clouded to hear her thoughts.
I stayed on the ground for who knows how long, it could have been days and I wouldn’t have noticed. My world had no meaning anymore. Earth stopped spinning and was a lifeless sphere in the universe.
Bella’s dead. No. She couldn’t be I wouldn’t believe it until I had proof. I couldn’t believe it. I had to call…I had to know.
I picked up my phone and dialed the number that I had tried to block from my mind.
“Swan residence,”
It was a male voice, but not Charlie’s. Who could be at Bella’s house? On the other hand why did I care? Wasn’t the point of leaving her so that she would move on with a perfectly normal life?
“Where is Charlie?”
“He’s not here,”
“Where is he?”
“He’s at the funeral.”
Those four words ripped my still heart out of my chest and the core of the earth pulled me under. I knew in that instant what I had to do. I hung up the phone and got off the ground.
I didn’t say goodbye to Rosalie, she didn’t need an explanation for she knew what I was doing. I could have sworn I heard her muffled thoughts saying Edward don’t…please. But I had to. I couldn’t live in a world where she didn’t exist. A world where she didn’t exist isn’t a world at all. It’s my own personal hell where I’m slowly burning from the inside.
I was running as fast as possible and I was leaving pieces of me trailing behind as I made my way across the empty forest.
I was going to Italy. I was going to the Volturi, and I was going to die. I was going to die for her, for she was my world, she was my love.
Forever.

I decided a plane would be faster than running but I wasn’t looking forward to the free time to think. I didn’t want to think, it hurt too much.
I spent the plane ride remembering her face. I remembered how peaceful she looked while she slept and how her brows furrowed when she was dreaming about something. I thought about the beautiful rose color her cheeks turned when she was embarrassed. I remembered her heart broken expression as I said goodbye. I didn’t want to remember that face so I blocked it out of my mind.
As pleasantly wonderful all these memories were, they made me burn from the inside. They tore at my chest and left me silently withering in pain.
I had killed her. I might as well have pushed her off the cliff myself. I should have known she wouldn’t handle my absence; I had been engraved into her soul, as she is engraved in mine.
But I wouldn’t have to live with myself much longer.
I wish that didn’t have to go to the Volturi. But who else would help me? Emmett? Jasper? Carlisle? I couldn’t ask them to do something like this. It wouldn’t be fair to them. And if the Volturi wouldn’t help me, I would make them take my worthless life from me, I didn’t want my life without her.
The plane landed and unloaded and I immediately started running. I didn’t want to bother with cars or people or anything. It was evening and the sun was still out. I decided to wait outside the city until dark…I wouldn’t resort to extremes until necessary.
Once it was dark I entered the city. The guards didn’t look suspicious of the time only the expression on my face. They thought about asking if I needed help but something about the expression made them think otherwise. I read my face in their minds and it looked as though someone stabbing me over and over again.
I knew exactly where the entrance to the Volturi’s underground kingdom was from Carlisle’s memories of traveling there himself. As soon as I got the alley I walked into it until I found the hole that took you under. I easily jumped down the hole and began to make my decent down toward my ending.

It took no more than 5 minutes to make the trip to the front reception room. Sitting at the front desk was the perfectly human receptionist. It astounded me how comfortable she was sitting in the presence of vampires who would easily kill her. Her thoughts were so calm.
“Hello. How can I help you?” She said in a perfectly delightful tone.
“I would like to speak to Aro, if he is not busy. My name is Edward Cullen.” I was not so polite. But I wasn’t concerned with etiquette at this point.
“I’ll check,” She dialed a number on the telephone and it took exactly half a ring for a voice that sounded like wind chimes to answer with a quick “Yes,”
“Jane, There is an Edward Cullen here and he would like to see Aro, if he is not busy.”
“I will come and meet him, thank you Gianna.”
Gianna hung up the phone but didn’t bother to repeat the short conversation to me because she knew I could hear perfectly well.
It took exactly one minute for a small woman with blond hair and bright red eyes to walk through the door. She was so small that she looked no older than 15. She glided across the room to meet me.
“Hello Edward I’m Jane, it’s very pleased to meet you. Aro is pleased as well if you would please follow me.” Jane was just as polite as Gianna.
“Nice to meet you as well Jane,”
As we walked through the doors I heard the calm thoughts of Gianna. And I realized why she was so comfortable. She was hoping that they would see something in her and that they would keep her and spare her life.
The room we entered was large and very ancient. The floor was the same uneven stone that spread along the first part of the Volturi’s underground kingdom. The walls were high and there were small windows at the very top where the ceiling met the walls. They let in little light so the rest of the room was lit by candles.
I could see vampires lining the walls all focused on my entrance. All their thoughts were curious. Many of them wanted to know why I was here.
In the center of the room I saw three chairs or thrones rather and in them were the three leaders Aro, Caius, and Marcus.
Aro’s thoughts matched the thoughts of the witnesses and Marcus was absent-minded, he didn’t have a particular interest in my being there. However Caius seemed anxious. He didn’t really want me there and he didn’t seem very happy that I knew how to get into their lair so easily. He didn’t like others being in on their secret.
“Welcome,” Aro said delighted that there was a new face deep underground.
“The pleasure is mine Aro. My name is Edward Cullen. Carlisle is my father, for all intensive purposes,”
“Carlisle! How is he? It’s been ages.” Aro was reminiscing about old times with Carlisle. He seemed truly delighted to have me here now, knowing who I was related to.
“He is well and I’m sure he would be happy to hear that you are well.” I was certain my face gave away that I was not up for talking.
“I’m sensing that a friendly visit was not your first order of business.” His face sunk slightly from the large smile he had before.
“Sadly no. It’s very hard to explain and I’m not exactly sure how to start.” My throat closed up and my mind went whizzing through past memories of her.
“Young friend if you are lost for words you can simply show me what you mean.” I had forgotten about Aro’s gift. He had the ability to gather all the thoughts your mind has ever had just by touching your skin.
I stepped forward and held out my hand. He placed a light touch on my palm and began to cycle through my memories as I read them back in my mind. I watched him see every touch, every smile and every feeling I had of her. Touches, smiles, and feelings I would never be able to experience again.
He stepped back, astonished. “I see,” he said with wide eyes.
“Amazing, truly amazing. The self-control for something that appeals to you so much. Any one of us would have never lasted that long. Just reading your thoughts makes my mouth water.”
A slight growl came through my mouth. It was a reaction I had for anything that even thought of bringing harm to Bella. Aro backed up a half inch.
I calmed my self and spoke quietly and calmly. “So you understand what I ask of you?”
“Unfortunately, yes.” He now turned to the confused watchers that included a bored Marcus and an agitated Caius. “Young Edward has asked us to take his life from him due to the death of his love Isabella.” Aro looked saddened by his own words.
“As much as I would like to make you happy and do what you ask, I’m not sure I can. I do not take value in taking lives that have done nothing to deserve death. And to think of the pain it was cause my good friend Carlisle and the rest of your family, well it makes me shudder.”
At that moment I moved on to plan B. Aro was not going to help and Caius and Marcus we’re not going to argue and grant my request. I spoke the rest of my words through my teeth.
“Thank you Aro, I will leave now.” I started to turn around when Aro spoke.
“I hope this does not come between our new growing friendship Edward. Would you tell Carlisle that I said hello?”
“I will.” This was a lie of course. I would make them take my life one way or another, whether they wanted to or not.
I sped out the door and began to make my way to the surface thinking the whole time about how I could make them end my life. I could simply murder someone in the streets. But I would not want to disappoint Carlisle as I left this world.
I realized that in two days it was the Saint Marcus Day celebration. That would be my chance. The Volturi would never let me live if I were to expose our kind on that day of all days.
I made my way to the surface and sat in the darkness of the alley. I thought about all the ways I could die. I wasn’t sure which one I was going to choose. But as I sat there, I thought once again about her face.
It made my body burn again but I was willing to take the pain if it meant seeing her in my mind.
Two days. That was all I had to suffer, no more. And then my life would end with her image engraved in my mind for all eternity.

It had been two long days. I was still in the alley way above the Volturi’s lair. I had spent the time deciding what I would do to anger the Volturi; how I would make them take my life. After a day of debating between throwing a car across the plaza in front of the clock tower and simply walking into the sunlight, I made my decision.
I didn’t want too many theatrics; I wanted to do just enough to make them have a reason to kill me. After I made my decision I only had to wait a day and a half until noon on Saint Marcus Day. At noon the sun would be brightest therefore making my appearance more noticeable.
I spent the rest of the day thinking of her face and holding my self together so the burning wouldn’t completely tare me apart. I sat there and wish that she would magically come along with a needle and thread to sew me back together. But I knew that would never happen. That thought made the burning hotter and I was shocked at the fact that I wasn’t a pile of ashes by now.
At 8:30 on the morning of my final day, people began to flood into the streets dressed in red robes. I saw that some children had those fake plastic vampire teeth in. I hated those things; they weren’t even close to being right and it made us seem even more vicious than we already were.
10:30.
The end was getting closer and I was grateful. I went all the way back in my memories to a night in Bella’s room; one of the nights before she knew I was there. I remembered watching her dream and she whispered my name. It was then and there that I realized that I loved her. I loved her with my whole being and promised I wouldn’t let anything harm her, not even me.
But I did let myself harm her. I broke her heart and ripped out her soul when I said goodbye. I had made her jump off a cliff into her end. It was all my fault.
11:30.
Just a few more minutes. The plaza was filled with people now. Everyone was shoulder to shoulder in the giant sea of red.
11:50…11:55…11:57…11:58.
I stepped right to the edge of the alley where the line from the sun almost touched my shoes. I removed my white shirt and let it fall to the ground.
The clock chimed a loud echo through the square. The sound from the crowd was enormous and the clock was louder. Children covered their ears from the unpleasant noise.
“Edward!” I heard a faint scream of my name and I would recognize the voice anywhere. But it wasn’t her, I knew it wasn’t. It must have been in my mind. But it was the best final wish to hear her voice one last time.
The clocked tolled again. There was a small family by the mouth of the alley. The little girl was covering her ears and the eldest was staring at me in the alley. This would be the fastest way to get a reaction…all the girl had to do was scream.
“Edward, no!” I heard her voice in my head again. My expression was peaceful. My eyes were closed and I had my palms raised slightly upward.
The clocked tolled a third time.
“No! Edward look at me!” I smiled and raised my foot to take a step forward.
Goodbye Bella. I love you.
This was my final thought.

The light made my eyelids turn red. A warm body had hit mine and I wouldn’t have noticed the force exerted if it wasn’t for the grunt that came out of the person’s mouth.
I hadn’t realized that I was already dead. The Volturi must have been quick about it. Perhaps they took me into the darkness of the alley and burned me there. I heard the clock toll again. I opened my black eyes slowly and looked down to see big brown eyes staring back at me.
Why was I seeing her? The only explanation had to be that there was a life after death for my kind. There had to be a life afterwards. She wouldn’t be in hell, she was too pure and too good to be there.
A million theories hit me all at once. But the one that stuck out was something that my father had told me. He had always said that we had not lost our souls and that we would carry on. It must be true, it had to be.
I stared at her beautiful face and I couldn’t believe that I had let her go. But I got to see her face even if we were both dead, I would take it.
I finally was able to speak.
“Amazing,” my voice was full of wonder and astonishment. “Carlisle was right.”
And then I got to hear her voice again. It was even louder in my mind than before. Maybe it was because our souls were together one last time.
“Edward,” she was gasping for air and her voice was barely above a whisper. “You’ve got to get back into the shadows. Your have to move!”
What she was saying didn’t make any sense but I didn’t care. I brushed my hand along her cheek and felt her warmth trickle through my fingertips. It felt like she was pushing against me but my stone body didn’t move an inch. I didn’t want to move I just wanted to stay here in this spot and never let her go.
“I can’t believe how quick it was. I didn’t feel a thing – they’re very good.” I was truly astonished that pain wasn’t anywhere in my body and that joy was the only thing I felt. I closed my eyes and pressed my face into her hair. I took in her smell and pressed my lips right by her ear.
Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, hat had no power yet upon thy beauty,” I spoke Romeo’s line from inside the tomb. The clock tower chimed a final time. “You smell just exactly the same as always,” I took in another breath. “So maybe this is hell. I don’t care I’ll take it.”
She interrupted quickly. “I’m not dead, and neither are you! Please Edward, we have to move. They can’t be far away!”
I was confused. Not dead? “What was that?” I asked politely. I’m not sure why I asked…I had heard her perfectly clear.
She was still out of breath. “We’re not dead, not yet! But we have to get out of here before the Volturi…”
I understood in that instant. We were alive, Bella was alive. But hadn’t Alice seen her jump? It all didn’t make sense. The only thing that made sense was that she was alive and that we were suddenly in a trap of inescapable trouble.
My eyes flashed open and I whipped Bella around farther into the shadows until her back was facing the wall and my back was to her. I heard the distant thoughts of Aro’s two guards, Felix and Demetri. My arms were spread out across Bella protectively. I didn’t want her to be a part of this. I knew it was probably to late to get her away from the situation but I wouldn’t give up with out a fight.
Felix and Demetri were two black figures in the shadows of the alley. They’re thoughts were almost happy. These two were the types of vampires that took enjoyment in punishment. They could see Bella and they we’re hoping that two would die today. Their thoughts made me want to rip their heads off but I was going to keep calm. Keeping calm would hopefully make them let Bella go.
“Greetings, gentlemen,” I kept my voice easy and pleasant. But on the inside I was on the verge of a panic attack. “I don’t think I’ll be requiring your service today. I would appreciate it very much, however, if you could send my thanks to your masters.
“Shall we take this conversation to a more appropriate venue?” Felix’s voice was menacing and evil. I had a painful feeling that this wasn’t going to be as easy I as I was hoping.
“I don’t believe that will be necessary.” It wasn’t as easy to keep my voice calm. The panic inside me was growing. “I know your instructions. Felix. I haven’t broken any rules.”
“Felix merely meant to point out the proximity of the sun,” Demetri spoke in a less violent tone. His thoughts were also much more civilized than Felix’s. “Let us seek better cover.”
Here was my chance to get Bella out. It was a long shot but I would have to try. I didn’t want her down there, it made the burning feeling come back with full force.
“I’ll be right behind you. Bella why don’t you go back to the square and enjoy the festival?” That was move. And by reading Felix’s thoughts I knew that it hadn’t worked.
“No, bring the girl.” His voice was a harsh whisper.
“I don’t think so.” I was thru trying to keep my voice calm. My voice was cold and full of acid. She was not going to have a part in this, I wouldn’t allow it. I began to crouch slightly forward. If a fight would be what it took to protect her than that would be exactly what they would get.
Bella must have sensed my movement toward a fight and her small, beautiful voice whispered “No.”
“Shh,” I murmured back to her. She didn’t have a say in the matter.
“Felix,” Demetri was holding Felix’s shoulder cautioning him to stop. Aro had not sent them up for a fight. He was not one for unnecessary violence, it didn’t suit him. “Not here.” Demetri turned back to me. “Aro would simply like to speak with you again, if you have decided not to force our hand after all.”
“I would certainly talk to Aro, but the girl goes free.”
“I’m afraid that’s not possible,” He was truly regretful of the fact; I could see in his thoughts that Bella leaving was not an option. “We do have rules to obey.”
“Then I’m afraid that I’ll be unable to accept Aro’s invitation, Demetri.”
“That’s just fine,” Felix spat. Felix’s shape and size were massive. He was tall, thick, and very strong.
Demetri sighed. “Aro will be disappointed.”
“I’m sure he’ll survive the letdown.” I replied back. I could see a plan forming inside both of their heads.
They both spread out across the valley in order to force me closer to the Volturi entrance. I didn’t move. I locked my hard body into my crouch and planted my feet on the uneven stone ground. I would doom my self to protect her. I would never let anything hurt her again, even if it killed me.

It was the familiar thoughts of someone that made my head whip around toward the darker part of the alley. Demetri and Felix repeated my response due to the light foot steps that sounded more like they we’re dancing.
“Let’s behave ourselves, shall we?” It was Alice’s soft voice that we heard next. “There are ladies present.”
Alice skipped to my side and faced the two guards. Her stance was casual but Felix and Demetri were tenser than before. They were not happy with the even numbers that were present. Felix’s thoughts were predominately vicious.
“We’re not alone,” She reminded us. Her words made me notice the worried thoughts that came behind. The family that had been placed at the mouth of the alley for the entire confrontation was now stirring with concern. It protective stance in front of Bella was what sparked their attention but now they could sense the tension in the group.
The mother was talking quickly to the father and the father got the attention of one of the red-blazered men.
“Please, Edward, let’s be reasonable,” Demetri was very concerned and worried about the attention we were calling. I was giving them more of a reason to kill me. This was not what I wanted, not now. Bella was alive and I had a reason to live. Although I wasn’t sure what I would do if we lived through this. Would I leave again? Would I stay and love her forever? Would I change her to keep her with me? The questions were swarming in my head but I didn’t have the time to concentrate on them. They were not important.
“Let’s,” I agreed. “And we’ll leave quietly now, with no one the wiser.”
Demetri was not happy with how stubborn I was being and he was beginning to get very frustrated. “At least let us discuss this more privately.” I was not going to give in. Bella would not be a part of this.
There were six men in red blazers surrounding and talking to the family. They were very anxious and they did not like what they were seeing.
“No.” I snapped at them. My voice was filled with anger and hate. Anger, because they would not let us go and hate because I was purely disgusted with myself. I hated that I had let her get this far into this. I left to have her out of our world and now she was entwined so tightly that there was no way for her to escape.
Felix’s face had the same devilish smile. He was ready for the same fight that I was. The next voice took us all by surprise.
“Enough.” Jane’s high pitched voice came from down the alley. I didn’t even notice that she was in the region until she said something. I wasn’t paying much attention to the thoughts around me; I was too worried about my existence that was standing behind me.
I realized that I had lost this fight. Aro wouldn’t have sent Jane if he didn’t really want to see us. I dropped my arms in defeat. It was a lost cause.
“Jane,” I sighed.
“Follow me,” Her voice or stance wasn’t threatening in any way. It was all of our knowledge about her power that made us obey without any trouble. Jane had a gift that would make the most powerful of us to shudder.
Jane turned away from us and headed back down the alley. Felix gestured for us to go in front, with a smirk on his face. What I wouldn’t have given to rip his head off and make him loose that smile forever.
Alice followed behind Jane immediately. I wrapped my arm around Bella’s waist. I felt her warmth slowly flow through my body. I never wanted to let her go. She was beautiful as always. But her face was different. It was drained and frightened and broken. I knew I was the cause of all those expressions. I would forever hate myself for replacing her face with this damaged one.
She was looking at me with frantic questions swimming in her tired brown eyes. The others were right behind us and I couldn’t answer her questions with them here. I simply shook my head telling her that it wasn’t the time.
“Well, Alice,” I said as we walked. I was back to keeping my voice calm and easy. But I was still panicking on the inside. “I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised to see you here.”
“It was my mistake and it was my job to set it right.”
I hadn’t been paying attention to her thoughts until now so I still didn’t know the whole story. I didn’t know how Bella was alive or where Alice had made the mistake.
“What happened?” I asked politely.
“It’s a long story. In summary, she did jump off a cliff, but she wasn’t trying to kill herself. Bella’s all about the extreme sports these days.” In that instant Alice began to replay the entire story in her head for me to see. My breath caught with the surprise of what Alice was showing me. Laurant and Victoria, Bella jumping off cliffs, and her new werewolf friends.
How could she be so reckless? How could she do that to Charlie? To me…?
I stopped that thought immediately. She had promised me not to do anything reckless or stupid but hadn’t I broken her heart. Hadn’t I broken my promise that she would be able to move on with her life. How could I expect her to keep her promise to me? I couldn’t be as angry as I wanted to be at her.
“Hm,” I was trying to restore my calm tone but my words were slightly choked and concerned.
We reached the hole that dropped down into the underground tunnel. Jane had already jumped and Alice gracefully strode downward. Bella looked down the hole and her eyes grew wide.
“It’s all right, Bella,” I whispered into her ear. “Alice will catch you.”
She looked back at me and sat down on the edge of the entrance. Her legs swung into the narrow gap. “Alice?” Her voice was shaky.
“I’m right here, Bella.” She reassured.
I took hold of her wrists and lowered her farther into the hole. “Ready?” I asked.
“Drop her,” Alice called back at me.
I let go of her wrists and let her fall downward. This wouldn’t have bothered me so much if this scene didn’t look so much like her jumping off a cliff. I saw her clutch her hands to her mouth and she fell easily into Alice’s arms.

Alice set Bella down and began to follow Jane. I wrapped my arm around Bella’s waist and started to pull her along the corridor. She wrapped both her arms around my waist and she continued to trip along the uneven stone.
We had not been together in almost 6 months, but the way we were holding each other felt right. I felt like this was how it was supposed to be forever. Forever being until she died for real. She’s not going to change, I won’t let it happen. I would be there if she still wanted me to be.
Demetri slid the heavy grate over the hole after our group was down in the corridor. The space got immensely darker but we could all see perfectly fine, except for Bella. The only sounds were our breathing and Bella’s uneven footsteps. She was having a hard time keeping pace. I slowed down to match her better and Felix let out an impatient sigh. This made me fairly happy, he could wait.
I reached across my body and put my hand on Bella’s cheek. Then I moved my thumb to trace the shape of her lips. I was so thirsty, I hadn’t hunted in days and her scent burned my through throat like a wild fire. But I could ignore the thirst. This might very well be our last reunion and I wasn’t going to waist a second of it. I wouldn’t let go of her for anything. I felt her grip my waist tighter. She must have realized our lack of time just as I did.
I pressed my face into her hair and then moved my lips down to kiss her forehead. I had missed her and I hadn’t realized until now how much. I could hear and feel her heartbeat racing. She was terrified of what was going to happen. But she couldn’t have been as scared as I was. I wish I could have comforted her by telling her that we would get out alive but I didn’t think that was necessarily true.
We continued to walk downwards and Bella continued to stumble and trip. I could feel her temperature dropping. The cold wasn’t uncomfortable to us but to her it was probably unbearable. I could hear her teeth chattering and her body began to shake.
My cold body probably wasn’t helping so I let go of her waist and took her hand.
“N-n-no,” She chattered and she grasped onto my waist even tighter than before. I started to rub her harm hoping that the friction would help warm her up. But it didn’t do a lot of good.
We reached the end of the tunnel and walked through the rusted gate. I had to duck to get through the small opening. Demetri slammed the gate shut with a loud clatter that made Bella jump. We were in the long marble room that came right before the “waiting room”.
At the end of the long room was a thick wooden door. As we stepped through the door Bella relaxed. The temperature rose slightly and the decorations were very human.
However, as she relaxed I tightened. I realized that we were one step away from our end.

Standing by the thick wooden doors that separated us from the rest of the Volturi was Alec. “Jane,” he said smiling and reaching for her.
“Alec,” she said back and they both hugged and kissed each other.
“They send you out for one and you come back with two…and a half.” He added at the end looking straight at Bella. “Nice work.” This made Jane giggle. I didn’t like how lightly they were taking this situation. I didn’t like them looking at her, or thinking about her.
“Welcome back, Edward,” Alec greeted me. “You seem in a better mood.”
“Marginally,” my voice was flat; I was not in the mood for small talk. If we were going to die then I wanted to get it over with. Being with Bella now would make it harder to be separated from her in the next few minutes.
Alec laughed lightly. He scanned Bella up and down and looked at her arms clung around my waist. “And this is the cause of all the trouble?” he asked skeptically. His thoughts were the same as every body else’s. He didn’t’ get the love I felt for Bella. He didn’t understand why I was willing to die for her.
“Dibs,” Felix said jokingly behind me.
A snarl ripped through my throat. Felix smiled and turned his palm up; he curled his fingers twice, inviting me forward. I almost released Bella and ripped his head off but Alice touched my arm. “Patience,” she told me.
I looked at Alice, and she looked back at me. She showed me what the future would be if I fought Felix. It showed Bella crying and Aro about to light my broken body on fire. The thought made my chest ache and my throat close. Don’t give him what he wants. He wants to give Aro, Caius, and Marcus a reason to kill you. Fighting Felix won’t save Bella. And that’s all that matters right now. Right? We’ll do anything we can to save her Edward, I promise.
I took a deep breath and turned back toward Alec. Alice was right, Bella had to live, I wouldn’t let her be a part of any other fate.

Alec continued as if nothing happened. “Aro will be so pleased to see you again.”
“Let’s not keep him waiting.” Jane suggested right after him.
I kept my jaw tight and simply nodded. As more time passed I became more and more terrified for our lives, more importantly Bella’s life. I was more and more scared that Caius would convince Aro that we should be gotten rid of immediately. But I had to have some hope. If I didn’t have hope I wouldn’t be able to get my feet to move forward and follow Alec.
Jane took Alec’s hand and they went down the hallway that came right before the lair of the Volturi.
I heard a small groan come out of Bella’s mouth. I’m sure she was trying to hide her dislike for the uneven stone but it didn’t work. This little groan made the corners of my mouth pull up in a slight smile. But it also made my heart ache even that much more because that was one more thing that I would miss.
We entered the room and all faces were on us. Where the light hit their faces, rainbows danced on the walls. Aro, Caius, and Marcus were in front of us and Aro looked delighted, as always.
“Jane, dear one, you’ve returned!” Aro cried with a soft sigh.
He crossed the room with long graceful steps and took Jane’s face in his hands. He kissed her lightly on her lips and moved back a step. Jane’s thoughts were delighted; she liked it when Aro was pleased with her.
“Yes, Master.” Jane smiled. “I brought him back alive, just as you wished.” I hated how Jane and the others treated the three leaders. They looked at them as if they were gods. However I saw them as death in its purest form.
“Ah, Jane.” He was smiling also. “You are such a comfort to me.”
“And Alice and Bella, too!” he rejoiced, clapping his thin hands together. “This is a happy surprise! Wonderful!”
I wasn’t happy. It wasn’t near the right place to have a reunion and act like we weren’t about to loose our lives. I also did not like how formally addressed Bella; she shouldn’t have even been there.
Aro turned to Felix. “Felix, be a dear and tell my brothers about our company. I’m sure they wouldn’t want to miss this.
Miss what? Miss watching me burn and watch as Bella gets slaughtered because she knew too much? I shouldn’t have thought that because it made my chest thrash and burn.
But I had to wonder if we would be able to make our way out of the situation alive. I had a terrible and horrible feeling that the answer would be a deathly no.
