Chapter One

Edward listened closely over the constant hum of mosquitos in the air. The smell of the damp tundra was so refreshing, always saturated with the essence of a fresh rain. It was late at night but the sun still burned brightly in the sky. He clung under the shade of a huge pine tree so that his skin couldn’t reflect the shards of light thrown down by the sun and give away his location. Each and every one of Edwards senses were on full alert. His enemy was close and he needed to ready for the battle.

The thoughts of the attacker allowed Edward enough time to turn around and decide how to retaliate as the hulking figure hurled himself at Edward. Edward was much too fast and dodged out of the way as the assailant rushed past and ran into the old pine that had offered Edward its shade. The great tree crackled and moaned at the impact as it finally toppled over sending a rush of birds into the sky. At lightning speed, Edward ran at his attacker and shoved him hard into the ground so that their bodies indented the earth.
His opponent began laughing hysterically, “Esme’s going to be furious that you knocked down another one of her trees!”

“Are you kidding me? That one was all on you, Emmett! I didn’t make you run into the tree!” Edward was now laughing along with his burly brother. The two boys stood up and brushed themselves off. Then the sound of the sliding glass door at the back of their house caught their attention. They turned to see Esme standing there with an upset look on her face.

“Boys! What did I tell you about the trees? Pretty soon my Alaskan wilderness view is going to look like a parking lot!” Esme’s hand was at her hip and she looked so motherly.

“Sorry Esme.” Edward offered. He hated to see her upset.

She sighed and shook her head, “Well come on in, we’re expecting company.” The boys shoved each other back and forth as they made their way back to the house.

They walked up the back porch steps of their log home. The triangular front of the home had high windows pieced together allowing the natural light to filter in. The cabin did not have as many windows as their last home in Forks but it was still enough to make the place look bright and cheerful.

Rosalie was sitting on the couch flipping through a fashion magazine and Emmett plopped down beside her and kissed her cheek. She smiled at the affection and then Emmett picked up the remote and began flipping through the channels.

Esme was arranging some wild Alaskan flowers in an elegant glass vase on the dining table. Alice was begging Jasper to play her a game of chess but he remained firm in turning her down. Carlisle came down the stairs after having been in his study all day. He walked over to Esme and wrapped his arms around her. He whispered something to her and she smiled at what he said.

Edward saw who was missing from the group and knew exactly where she was. He rounded the corner of the kitchen and peeked into the office. It was a decent sized room with a mahogany desk and a top of line computer sitting on it. The walls were lined with shelves carrying every book you could ever want. This room had been designed to give Renesmee her own private place to do her homework. Edward smiled at his wife, Bella, as she sat at the computer staring at the screen.

“At it again, are you?” Edward walked into the room and rounded the desk so that he was on the same side as Bella and could see the pictures on the screen that he knew all too well.

Bella shrugged. “I just miss her.”

Bella was clicking through photographs of Renesmee and Jacob in South America. Some of the pictures included their old friends from the Amazon coven. Bella and Edward had never seen their daughter more happy. Her bright smile lit the pictures and she outshined any exotic parrot or other creature she happened to be posing with. She had grown into such a beautiful young woman.

Bella sighed. “I just wish she’d send another email already. We haven’t heard from her since last week.”
Edward chuckled, “Well, she’s on her honeymoon. I don’t think keeping us updated is her first priority.”
Bella turned off the computer screen and wheeled her chair to face Edward. “Why did we let her do this again?”

Edward laughed. “We? I think you were the one that told her she could marry Jacob.”

“Well I seem to remember you telling her that she could get married once she got her first college degree.” Bella shot back.

Edward cleared his throat. “I didn’t know she would get her first degree by the age of twelve.”

They both had to laugh. Renesmee did not look 12 but had already grown into her 17 year old body with the maturity of 25 year old. They knew from the start that the day would come when Renesmee would marry Jacob. They had just hoped that it wouldn’t be this soon.

“Don’t worry Bella,” Edward soothed, “She’s with Jake. What could happen?”

Just then Alice’s musical voice rang out “They’re here!” Moments later there was a knock at the door. Their guests had arrived. Edward and Bella joined the family in the living room just in time to welcome the Denali coven into their home. Tanya walked through the door first and Esme and Carlisle were there to greet her with a hug. She flipped her strawberry blond hair over her shoulder and greeted everyone else. Next through the door were Eleazar and Carmen. Carmen and Esme complemented each other’s outfits and stood to the side visiting with each other. Eleazar closed the door behind them. Bella noticed that the entire coven had not arrived.

“I love what you’ve done with the place!” Carmen exclaimed to Esme. “I think I’ll need you to come and redecorate our cabin!”

“Of course! I would be happy to!” Esme offered. They all settled down on the brown leather couches in the living room.

Eleazar asked the first question, “So how do you like Juneau?”

“We love it.” Carlisle answered. “The kids have been able to go to high school and then move straight onto college at the University of Alaska Southeast. I’ve been able to practice medicine at the local hospital. This really is one of the best places we’ve lived so far.”

“Glad to hear it!” Eleazar smiled.

Tanya spoke up next, “So now that you guys are all out of school for the summer, what do you do to keep busy around here?”

Emmett laughed, “Get all the grizzly I can!” Edward and Jasper chuckled along with him.

Bella’s curiosity about Kate and Garrett’s whereabouts pulled at her so she asked, “Where are Kate and Garrett? Didn’t they want to come and visit?”

Tanya grinned at the question. “Oh those two love birds wanted some alone time.” The boys broke out in laughter once more but Jaspers laugh was cut short when Alice went rigid next to him. Her eyes were glazed over but her expression revealed the horror of what she was seeing.

“Alice, what is it? What do you see?” Jasper asked. The entire room was silent now.

“No, no, no!” Alice fought. She did not want her vision to be real. “No! This can’t be happening!”

In a fraction of a second, Carlisle was kneeling beside her, looking up into her face. “Alice, honey, you need to tell us what is going on. Maybe we can help.”

The vision was over and Alice’s eyes were closed shut. She buried her face into Jasper’s chest. “No, you can’t help. It’s too late. It’s done.”

“What’s done Alice? Please, you need to tell us.” Carlisle pushed.

Alice’s shoulders were heaving as she carried the burden of knowing the truth. She pulled away from Jaspers chest and looked at Tanya. “I’m so sorry Tanya. It’s Kate.”

Tanya jumped up from her seat. “What do you mean? What happened to Kate?” The panic struck Tanya as the fear of losing another sister overwhelmed her.

Alice forced the words out of her mouth. “Kate has been captured. It looks like the Volturi. I saw Jane, Corin, and Felix.” Alice struggled with the next part. “Garrett… He tried to protect her… I’m so sorry…” Alice was shaking her head trying to shake the images out of her mind.

“What Alice?” Eleazar asked desperately. “What happened to Garrett?”

Alice was digging her fingers so deep into the couch cushions that her fingernails shredded the upholstery. “I’m sorry… Garrett… is dead. They killed him.”

“No!” Tanya cried. “We have to go! We have to get back in time to save them!”

Alice shook her head. “It’s too late. It’s over now.”

A cry of anguish escaped Tanya’s throat. Eleazar and Carmen wrapped their arms around her, trying to calm her down.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner. I wasn’t watching. It was only when Bella asked about Kate and Garrett that I let my mind wander to them. If I had been paying closer attention then we could have done something!” Alice was overcome with despair.

“Don’t blame yourself, Alice.” Jasper pleaded with her. “This isn’t your fault.” He tried to soother her by pushing calm feelings into her but she knew better and was aware of his tactics.

Before another word could be said, the phone rang. Edward thought about letting it go but then worried that it might be important, it might be Kate needing their help. He ran into the kitchen and answered the cordless phone.

“Hello?”

“Edward!” It was Jacob’s voice. “Edward! She’s gone!” He was clearly frantic.

“Whoa, calm down Jake. Who’s gone?”

“Nessy! They took her! I don’t know what happened but now she’s gone! Edward, we’ve gotta find her! You have to help me…” Jacob’s voice was cracking as his emotions took over.

Edward was bewildered at what he was hearing. “Jake, listen to me very closely. Who took Renesmee?”

“I think it was the Volturi. Before I could even react or phase everything went black! The kind of blackout that Alec is capable of. I thought I was dead. I couldn’t hear anything, or see, smell, or even feel anything. After a while all my senses came back to me but Nessy was gone! Oh God, Edward, we have to find her…” Jacob was struggling trying to keep it together.

Bella was now at Edward’s side. “What happened? Is it Renesme?” Her golden eyes pleaded with Edward to tell her everything would be okay but he couldn’t lie to her.

Edward turned to face everyone in the living room, they all now had their eyes trained on him. “Renesmee has been captured as well.”

Chapter 13

As the five different teams of Allies entered the city of Volterra only one thing was certain: there was dead silence everywhere. It made the place seem like a ghost town, deserted, eerie, and dead. In a way, they were grateful for Aro’s decision to evacuate the city; less innocent lives would be destroyed by the violence that was inevitable on this night.

Jasper’s team took their position in front of the castle while the other teams blocked each exit. They would enter each exit and wipe out any Volturi that stood in their way as they cleared a path to the heart of the castle. The Quileutes were ready in their wolf forms, all except for Leah and Jacob. Leah’s team would be entering through a small tunnel so she would need to remain in her human size until the time was right. Jacob would hold off on phasing until they made it to the turret. His team’s mission was one of the most important of all and would require the most stealth.

The mission: To destroy Aro.

Bella used her mind to find the “points of light” of each of the allies and stretched her mental shield over them. It would be more difficult since they were split into five groups but she would try her best to keep them all protected from the other mental abilities bestowed on the likes of Jane, Alec, and Chelsea. She manipulated the shields around each point of light and tied off the thread of the shields that clung to each of the allies as a delicate web. She was very grateful that she had worked to perfect this aspect of her shield even though it had taken the better part of the last ten years. She could feel them surround her, pinpoint their exact locations like balls she juggled, though they were no longer within her normal line of sight.

With their watches synchronized, the teams went through their entry points all at the same time.

Team A: Edward, Bella, Jacob, Christopher - 8:30pm

Edward slid his fingers through the holes in the grate that covered the sewer entrance and lifted the heavy object and set it aside. Jacob and Christopher jumped down first and Edward waited for Bella to go next. He watched her expression and could see how this was a hard thing for her to do.

This was the entrance that Felix, Demetri, and Jane had brought them through so many years ago during Bella’s first trip to Volterra in her attempt to save Edward. Even though she was virtually invincible now, she still felt the underlying fear.

“It’ll be okay,” Edward whispered into her hair as he pulled her close against him. “We can do this.”

Bella nodded. “I know. Renesmee is waiting for us.” She stepped forward and fell into the hole, landing lightly onto her feet. She was glad that this time she didn’t need Alice to catch her. The tunnel was made of wet stones that faintly reflected what little light came through the hole above. Edward came down next.

“Just follow it down,” he instructed Jacob and Christopher. He and Bella walked side by side behind them with their arms around each other. The wide tunnel continued its path at a slant that led them deeper into the earth. Soon the tunnel turned into a low arch and began to lighten up to a dull gray. At the end of the tunnel they reached a grate that was made of rusty iron bars. Christopher pushed open the small door that was made of thinner, interlaced bars. Once through the door they were in a larger, brighter, long stone room. They hurried to the end of the long room and next opened a low, heavy wooden door. Bella knew what to expect next.

They entered the brightly lit, unremarkable hallway with its off-white walls and industrial gray carpeting. The rectangles of fluorescent light flickered above them as they ran towards the elevator. Out of the corner of Bella’s eye she noticed the outline of a door against the wall of the hallway that her human eyes had not perceived the last time she had traveled through here. She briefly wondered where this secret passageway led to but kept her mind on the task at hand. They quickly entered the elevator and Edward pushed the button that would take them to the second floor, passing three levels: The basement level (where they were at), then the first floor, and off to the second.

During the short elevator ride, Edward tried to listen for any thoughts around him. Mostly he could hear Jacob and all the ways he was imaging killing Aro. He could also hear the hope mingled with despair as he longed to be reunited with Renesmee. Bella’s mind remained silent; she was not forcing her inner shield down at this moment because she was using all of her energy to concentrate on the allies that she protected. As Edward listened he could hear the dull and boring thoughts of the latest Volturi receptionist, Andria. She was trying to imagine all the different abilities that she might have if she were ever changed into a vampire and given a permanent position with the Volturi. She very much envied the life of a vampire and desperately wanted to join them. All the other thoughts were further away so Edward felt comfortable with their vulnerable position as the elevator doors opened on level two.

As they slid open, Andria could be seen sitting at the mahogany desk filing away at her nails. Why hadn’t she been warned? Perhaps it was another one of Aro’s ploy’s to keep everyone in the dark and out of Alice’s visions. Within a second of the door opening, Edward, Christopher, and Bella were next to Andria with Bella’s hand clamped over her mouth. Revitalized by the knowledge that Renesmee was close, Jacob ran his fastest too, though in his human form, he still lagged behind the faster vampires.

Edward leaned down and let out a low growl in the young woman’s ear. “If you scream, we will kill you. Understand?”

She nodded emphatically.

Bella let her hand slide off her mouth and Edward asked the next question. “Where is Renesmee?”
Her eyes were wide with fear as she shook her head “I don’t know.” Edward listened to her thoughts and confirmed that she was telling the truth.

“Please,” Andria begged. “I’m innocent.”

Christopher stood looking at her with his head cocked slightly to the side. It was then that he realized he hadn’t fed since he had made this incredible journey with Angelina. He snatched the mortal receptionist from Bella’s grasp. Bella looked at him confused but Edward held a hand up to her to keep her from responding. They both watched as Christopher’s eyes turned black as night from the thirst and anger.

“You claim to be innocent?” Christopher nearly snarled at Andria. “Yet here you stand day in and day out, night after night, watching as those of your kind are brought past you, escorted to their death….and you say nothing….do nothing to help them….to warn them….innocent? No, sorry but you my dear are far from innocent. In your heart I can see the truth….you want to be one of those which the humans are brought to. You want to be like the Volturi…. Do you really believe it to be such a grand life? Perhaps you should know what it is that those unfortunate souls find out shortly after passing your desk.” With that Christopher tightened his hold on her and sank his razor sharp teeth into her throat, draining her of every ounce of blood that her body could give.

Andria’s limp body fell at his feet as he released his grip on her. Christopher wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his right arm and turned to look at Edward who understood why he had done what he did. Edward knew that it would be much better for him to be at his strongest before the battle and he had also seen in the thoughts of Andria that she had very much wanted to be one with the Volturi and that she felt no pity for those brought past her but rather she was amused knowing that they had no idea of their pending demise.

The team went through the set of double doors at the back of the reception area into a long hallway. Surprisingly, there was no one in the halls. Either this was going to be a lot easier than they had expected, or Aro had another trick up his sleeve. The four of them stayed close to the wood paneled wall with Edward leading, then Bella, then Jacob, and with Christopher pulling up the rear. Their feet made no sounds as the thick, deep green carpet absorbed the impact of each step. They quickly passed by the Tuscan countryside paintings as Edward counted the panels. When he was sure they’d reached the right one, he slid the panel to the side and it revealed a plain wooden door. Everything was quiet, but Edward could hear the thoughts on the other side of the door. He recognized the minds of Afton, Chelsea, Renata, Sulpicia, and Aro. However, there was a buzzing hum of other thoughts in the room that he did not recognize. He could hear Aro’s mind as he sat on his wooden throne in the turret, waiting patiently for Edward’s arrival.

Team D: Carlisle, Esme, Eleazar, Carmen, Leah, Nahuel, Randall - 8:30pm

Carlisle was thankful to have Eleazar with him because of his profound knowledge of the Volturi Castle. They stood outside the ancient building seemingly staring at a blank stone wall with greenery framing the base of it.

“This was a secret entrance that we used to take us to what used to be a courtyard in the center of the castle,” Eleazar whispered as he gently pushed the shrubs aside to reveal a low tunnel. “When airplanes and helicopters were invented, Aro decided to level the courtyard and instead build several floors for new technology and surveillance instead. There’s also a helicopter pad on the roof now.”

Eleazar made his way into the dark tunnel first with Carmen by his side. Carlisle followed next with his arm securely around Esme. Nahuel and Leah walked hand in hand, following closely behind. Randall was the last in line but before he entered the tunnel he tore up some of the woody bushes and small trees and carried them with him.

When the others turned to stare at him with puzzled looks he simply said “We’ll need something to start a fire.” Carlisle nodded grimly in acceptance before turning back around. They would need a fire in order to burn the bodies of their enemies.

As they moved through the tunnel, Esme gasped aloud when she saw the outline of a face she did not recognize in the darkness, only inches away from hers. “Carlisle!” she yelped as she clung closer to him.

“It’s alright,” Eleazar whispered. He turned around and touched the face that seemed to be staring right at Esme. “They’re just statues.”

As Esme paused to take in the entire body of the statue she could see that it was meant to be an angel but one of its wings had been broken behind it. “Statues?” she echoed.

“Yes, Corin used to make these all the time. He has an uncanny artistic ability to make them extremely lifelike. He would carve them out of marble and they were used to decorate the courtyard. They must have shoved them all in here to get them out of the way.” They began to move again but only after a few steps Eleazar stopped, causing the rest of them to stop behind him. He squinted in the darkness at another statue and then his eyebrows lifted as if he suddenly recognized the face. “Ah, this is the one Corin made in memory of Abby, the only woman he’s ever loved.”

“What happened to her?” Esme asked.

Eleazar sighed heavily before answering, “Aro had her killed.”

They began moving again but Carlisle continued to think about this. If Corin’s love was killed by Aro, why would he continue to work for the man? The answer was obvious: Chelsea. Carlisle vowed that when the battle began, he would find a way to spare Corin and break the spell that kept him bound to the Volturi. As he contemplated using his one ‘gift’ Samon had given him, Carlisle knew that this would be the one to use. If he were to employ Chelsea’s power and unbind those whose loyalties were only artificial to the Volturi leaders, it would not only give the allies an advantage, but it would give those that served the Volturi their freedom of choice as well.

They finally made it out of the low tunnel and into a room where the atmosphere was completely different. Instead of the organic gray stones, everything was concrete and metal. Eleazar quickly raced to the base of a staircase that was made out of black grated metal. He had already seen the red blinking light of the camera that was trained on the tunnel entrance and now it was a matter of seconds before an alarm might sound. In an instant, Leah phased into her wolf form and she along with everyone else in the group followed Eleazar up two flights of stairs and into the heart of the Surveillance Room. It was dimly lit; in fact, the only light source came from the glowing computer monitors and surveillance TV screens. Electronic devices seemed to cover every desk on the floor.

Ready to greet them was a team of Lower Level Volturi Guards that they did not recognize. Each member of Carlisle’s team except for Randall hurled themselves at an opponent and began the struggle for life and death. During the commotion, Randall raced to a corner and quickly snapped the bushes and trees that he carried into smaller twigs. He was glad he had brought this along since nothing in the room was designed to burn except for a few reams of paper. He reached into his pocket and pulled out lighter fluid and a book of matches. He doused the pile with the flammable liquid and carefully struck the match. The small flame flickered at the tips of his fingers and then he let it drop onto the pile of wood. Suddenly the corner of the room was ablaze, ready to send any vampire to their final resting place.

Randall quickly turned and joined in the fight against the lower level guards. They were not trained nearly as well as the allies had been by Jasper so it was easy to quickly disassemble their bodies and throw them into the fire. As the enemy’s numbers were being depleted and the Allies seemed to be succeeding, Eleazar could feel a powerful glare burning into his back. He whipped around and recognized the face of his old friend, Santiago, head of Volturi security. Before he could say anything, Santiago had rushed into him, knocking him flat on his back. Eleazar lifted a knee and kicked into Santiago, making him flip over him. Within a fraction of a second the two were back to their feet, eyes boring into one another.

“Santiago, let me explain…” Eleazar started.

“Traidor!” The word for ‘traitor’ in their native Spanish tongue stung him deeply. Santiago’s red eyes were ablaze with fire. He raced towards Eleazar once again with his body low and knocked his shoulder deep into Eleazar abdomen, pinning him against the wall.

The others would have come to Eleazar’s aid but a new threat had presented itself. Carlisle looked up and recognized the once friendly face of Benjamin, now twisted in hatred. The young Egyptian reached out a hand towards Randall’s fire that had been burning the too sweet smell of vampires and pulled a large section of the flame out and into his open and waiting hand. With his other hand, he seemed to pluck out smaller portions of the flame creating baseball sized fireballs and began hurling them at the Allies.

“Benjamin!” Carlisle shouted as he fell to the floor to dodge one while he yanked Esme’s leg out from under her causing her to collapse and avoid being struck by the next fireball. If he was going to do something, now would be the time to do it. Carlisle took in a deep breath as he summoned the courage to act on Samon’s promise.

As Carlisle concentrated on what he was about to do, it felt as though time stood still around him. The sounds of the battle cries faded to nothing. He surveyed the scene around him with his newer, sharper senses. He looked at things in microscopic detail and as he did so, he noticed that he could see the fragile bluish web that surrounded his body from Bella’s shield. As he looked at those around him, he could also see the same ethereal substance cocooned each member of his team; protecting them from a mental attack.

And the mental attack was there. It snaked into the room in a green tinged apparition from Chelsea herself like a pit of Cobras. They became chords that firmly encased those they battled while others sought their way through Bella's webs to imprison us with their deadly charms. They had found a c**** in the web surrounding Benjamin and had gone straight down his throat, although still unable, due to Bella’s shield, to wrap around him in their usual fashion.

In an instant Carlisle knew what he must do and he concentrated on retracting the phantasms back to their source as he tapped into the gift that Samon had given him, the gift to access someone else’s power and that someone was Chelsea. He sensed immediately the change that came over the guards as the bindings were undone that held them chained to their masters. But Carlisle's job wasn’t finished yet. He mentally traced the specters as they snapped back to Chelsea, where she battled in the turret. He seized control of the multiple lines she still held to her and then retracted them as well, feeling the jolt as they snapped back to Chelsea simultaneously. Carlisle heard her gasp as though he were physically present in the room.

Two last strands remained to cut; one that bound herself and Aro and the other between herself and Caius. Once they had been severed, Chelsea cried out, “Masters!” with a sense of loss. The ancients gave her but a brief glance as the battle raged around them. She tried to send out her phantasmal bindings again but they would not follow her command. She tried three more times, each time becoming more panicked than before but Carlisle would not yield. He retracted them as soon as they'd left her. When Carlisle's three minutes were up, he noticed that Chelsea had given up trying. The battle had come to her. Her attention was diverted as she fought for her own life.

Carlisle retreated to the confines of his own mind. He at once took in the scene around him in the surveillance room now. Most of what was left of the Volturi guards seemed stunned and disoriented. Those who continued to fight were destroyed by the allies and their bodies were ripped to shreds and thrown into the fire. Others ran away, deciding to escape with their lives. Only Benjamin and Eleazar still stood in the room with confused expressions on their faces.

Just then, something quite unexpected happened. In an instant every person still left in the room had collapsed to ground and they were screaming in agony. It felt like a searing fire was rushing through their veins and burning them from the inside out. Even Leah who was not a vampire was feeling the horrific pain and her wolf form was howling wildly.

In the midst of the suffering Carlisle tried to think through the pain to determine what was happening. He saw the blue cocoons of Bella’s shield snap and disappear from each of the allies, leaving them unprotected. Had something happened to Bella? The painful force had struck everyone in the room at the same time, even Santiago who had never been protected by Bella’s shield. Then there was the pain. He had only felt this sort of pain once before and it was a few centuries ago when Carlisle had lived amongst the Volturi for a short period of time. He recalled the memory of Aro wanting to show off his latest addition to the guard: Jane. Jane was the only person he knew of that was capable of such an atrocity. But her gift had always been limited to one person at a time. How was it possible that now everyone was suffering?

Carlisle could see Esme screaming on the ground next to him. He couldn’t help but remember the three days of torture he had put her through when he bit into her to allow her to change into a vampire. He had desperately wanted to alleviate her pain then and the he felt the same surge of emotions now. But Carlisle was helpless, he could not do anything.

Then he saw Santiago stand up. He was breathing heavily but no longer seemed to be feeling the same state of pain that everyone else was still in. He rushed to Eleazar’s side and held his hand. He whispered something to his long lost friend but Carlisle couldn’t hear it above the torturous screaming.

He couldn’t be sure how much time had gone by because it seemed to last very long but as suddenly as the pain had come, it vanished. There were no more screams but everyone could be heard panting. Slowly, they began to arise from the floor.

“What was that?” Randall asked.

Everyone turned their attention to Santiago, it had not gone unnoticed that he had been released from the pain first. He shrugged his shoulders. “I am just as surprised by the attack as all of you.”

Randall scoffed, “Lying Volturi scum.” He started towards Santiago with a menacing approach but Eleazar stood between them and shook his head ‘no’ to Randall.

Carlisle approached from behind and rested a hand on Randall’s shoulder. “Santiago is no longer our enemy,” he explained. “I was able to break Chelsea’s binds to him and the other Volturi. He does not wish to fight us.”

A sob of agony ripped through Leah’s throat and caught everyone’s attention. When they turned to look at her she could be seen in her human form and Nahuel had used his shirt to cover her up. Her shoulders were shaking and Nahuel pulled her close in an effort to soothe her.

“Leah, what’s wrong?” Carlisle asked.

Through her sobs she made out the words. “Q-Q-Quil is dead!”

A gasp rushed through the room.

“Are you certain?” Carlisle asked her.

She choked back the tears as she tried to answer. “Our minds were linked and then suddenly, he was just gone!”

“Maybe he just phased back,” Nahuel offered.

She shook her head. “No, Embry saw it happen. We all saw it happen!” She began sobbing again and buried her face into Nahuel’s chest. They all gave her a moment to grieve.

In another part of the room Tia was at Benjamin’s side. She must have left Amun’s team to join them in the surveillance room sometime during the scuffle. She had been there when the pain struck them all.

“It’s alright, Benjamin,” she soothed softly. “I’m here now, everything is alright.”

“Tia?” Benjamin asked. His eyes seemed a little glazed over, as if waking from a long sleep, the sleep of Chelsea’s manipulation. “Tia, how did you escape? Did they hurt you? Are you alright?”

“What? No, everything is fine Ben.” She hadn’t understood the question and didn’t realize that Benjamin was referring to Kieu’s impersonation of Tia. She gently held his face in her hands and softly kissed his lips. “Everything is alright now. You’re safe again.” She continued to soothe and calm him in this manner for a few minutes before pressing him forward. “Benjamin? Amun and Kebi need us. Do you think you can manage to join me back to their team to finish our mission?” Benjamin nodded and the two of them left the room hand in hand.

“Speaking of missions,” Randall said, “it seems as though we have succeeded in ours.” He was right. They had taken the surveillance room and destroyed any that stood in their way. Had found Benjamin and brought him back to their side. They had been able to release Santiago from the tie that held him bound to the Volturi. There were no casualties on the side of the allies either. It was a true statement, they had succeeded. “Since that is the case I propose that we go to the ballroom to join in Zafrina’s team and help them out. If Quil in fact was killed, then they may be in trouble. What say you?” His eyes scanned the faces of the other allied.

Everyone in the group cheered in agreement. They would join the team in the ballroom and offer them any aid that they could.

Beneath the shout and cheers, Esme thought she heard a whimper. In another far corner of the room far away from the sweltering fire she saw a small body tucked under a desk. She slowly approached the seemingly fragile figure so as not to scare whoever it was. When she reached the desk she lowered herself onto her knees in front of it. A young woman with bronze curls that spilled over her shoulders had her face buried into her hands and was weeping tearless sobs.

“Renesmee?” Esme gasped as she choked back the overwhelming emotions.

The precious face lifted and looked at her loving grandmother. “Esme!” She shouted as she threw her arms around her.

“Carlisle! Carlisle, I’ve found her!” Esme shouted as she wrapped her arms tightly around the girl they had missed so much. Under Esme’s embrace, she felt colder than Esme was used to having her feel. She wondered what conditions they had forced her granddaughter to live in to bring her body temperature down so low. Within seconds Carlisle and the others were at her side and hugging her, comforting her, assuring her that she was safe now. She was quiet and tired. Esme lifted her up to her feet and gently guided her back to the staircase. “Carlisle, I am going to take her away from here but you should go and help in the ballroom. Rose and Emmett are there, please make sure they’re alright and bring them safely home.”

“I will,” Carlisle promised. He kissed Renesmee on the head and then kissed Esme goodbye. He watched as two of the women from his family went down the staircase to go back out the way they had come. Then he turned to join the rest of the group as they walked out a door and into a hall on the second floor, determined to make a difference in the ballroom.

So i knew not everyone was going to make it out a live but im really sad that Quil had to die what about claire it is really sad. I am glad that Carlise cut the bonds from Chealse. Please dont let anything bad happen to Esme cuz I have a feeling that it isnt Nessie. Good chapter I am exicited and anxious for the rest of the battle
Good question. Was it really Renesmee? Would she have called her 'Esme' or 'Grandma'?
Another good point behind my prediction! Renesmee wouldn't have called her Esme! She would have called her Grandma!

Yep Yep!! Abigail! We are soooo on this! Something is totally NOT right!!
I'm also wondering. But how come Carlisle did not recognise her if she's fake? I mean his one of the perfected beings now isn't he?
She got to be the real Nessie.
Excellent question Laiza!!!!

Carlisle has been a perfected Being for ten short years. As you recall he is more vampire than anything else still. He had been granted a gift and had just used it. Also, he was distracted with the need to go to the ballroom with the news of Quil's death. He did not give Nessie enough attention to check and focus intently enough to see the 'aura' that surrounded her. Perhaps if he had...
