Chapter One

Edward listened closely over the constant hum of mosquitos in the air. The smell of the damp tundra was so refreshing, always saturated with the essence of a fresh rain. It was late at night but the sun still burned brightly in the sky. He clung under the shade of a huge pine tree so that his skin couldn’t reflect the shards of light thrown down by the sun and give away his location. Each and every one of Edwards senses were on full alert. His enemy was close and he needed to ready for the battle.

The thoughts of the attacker allowed Edward enough time to turn around and decide how to retaliate as the hulking figure hurled himself at Edward. Edward was much too fast and dodged out of the way as the assailant rushed past and ran into the old pine that had offered Edward its shade. The great tree crackled and moaned at the impact as it finally toppled over sending a rush of birds into the sky. At lightning speed, Edward ran at his attacker and shoved him hard into the ground so that their bodies indented the earth.
His opponent began laughing hysterically, “Esme’s going to be furious that you knocked down another one of her trees!”

“Are you kidding me? That one was all on you, Emmett! I didn’t make you run into the tree!” Edward was now laughing along with his burly brother. The two boys stood up and brushed themselves off. Then the sound of the sliding glass door at the back of their house caught their attention. They turned to see Esme standing there with an upset look on her face.

“Boys! What did I tell you about the trees? Pretty soon my Alaskan wilderness view is going to look like a parking lot!” Esme’s hand was at her hip and she looked so motherly.

“Sorry Esme.” Edward offered. He hated to see her upset.

She sighed and shook her head, “Well come on in, we’re expecting company.” The boys shoved each other back and forth as they made their way back to the house.

They walked up the back porch steps of their log home. The triangular front of the home had high windows pieced together allowing the natural light to filter in. The cabin did not have as many windows as their last home in Forks but it was still enough to make the place look bright and cheerful.

Rosalie was sitting on the couch flipping through a fashion magazine and Emmett plopped down beside her and kissed her cheek. She smiled at the affection and then Emmett picked up the remote and began flipping through the channels.

Esme was arranging some wild Alaskan flowers in an elegant glass vase on the dining table. Alice was begging Jasper to play her a game of chess but he remained firm in turning her down. Carlisle came down the stairs after having been in his study all day. He walked over to Esme and wrapped his arms around her. He whispered something to her and she smiled at what he said.

Edward saw who was missing from the group and knew exactly where she was. He rounded the corner of the kitchen and peeked into the office. It was a decent sized room with a mahogany desk and a top of line computer sitting on it. The walls were lined with shelves carrying every book you could ever want. This room had been designed to give Renesmee her own private place to do her homework. Edward smiled at his wife, Bella, as she sat at the computer staring at the screen.

“At it again, are you?” Edward walked into the room and rounded the desk so that he was on the same side as Bella and could see the pictures on the screen that he knew all too well.

Bella shrugged. “I just miss her.”

Bella was clicking through photographs of Renesmee and Jacob in South America. Some of the pictures included their old friends from the Amazon coven. Bella and Edward had never seen their daughter more happy. Her bright smile lit the pictures and she outshined any exotic parrot or other creature she happened to be posing with. She had grown into such a beautiful young woman.

Bella sighed. “I just wish she’d send another email already. We haven’t heard from her since last week.”
Edward chuckled, “Well, she’s on her honeymoon. I don’t think keeping us updated is her first priority.”
Bella turned off the computer screen and wheeled her chair to face Edward. “Why did we let her do this again?”

Edward laughed. “We? I think you were the one that told her she could marry Jacob.”

“Well I seem to remember you telling her that she could get married once she got her first college degree.” Bella shot back.

Edward cleared his throat. “I didn’t know she would get her first degree by the age of twelve.”

They both had to laugh. Renesmee did not look 12 but had already grown into her 17 year old body with the maturity of 25 year old. They knew from the start that the day would come when Renesmee would marry Jacob. They had just hoped that it wouldn’t be this soon.

“Don’t worry Bella,” Edward soothed, “She’s with Jake. What could happen?”

Just then Alice’s musical voice rang out “They’re here!” Moments later there was a knock at the door. Their guests had arrived. Edward and Bella joined the family in the living room just in time to welcome the Denali coven into their home. Tanya walked through the door first and Esme and Carlisle were there to greet her with a hug. She flipped her strawberry blond hair over her shoulder and greeted everyone else. Next through the door were Eleazar and Carmen. Carmen and Esme complemented each other’s outfits and stood to the side visiting with each other. Eleazar closed the door behind them. Bella noticed that the entire coven had not arrived.

“I love what you’ve done with the place!” Carmen exclaimed to Esme. “I think I’ll need you to come and redecorate our cabin!”

“Of course! I would be happy to!” Esme offered. They all settled down on the brown leather couches in the living room.

Eleazar asked the first question, “So how do you like Juneau?”

“We love it.” Carlisle answered. “The kids have been able to go to high school and then move straight onto college at the University of Alaska Southeast. I’ve been able to practice medicine at the local hospital. This really is one of the best places we’ve lived so far.”

“Glad to hear it!” Eleazar smiled.

Tanya spoke up next, “So now that you guys are all out of school for the summer, what do you do to keep busy around here?”

Emmett laughed, “Get all the grizzly I can!” Edward and Jasper chuckled along with him.

Bella’s curiosity about Kate and Garrett’s whereabouts pulled at her so she asked, “Where are Kate and Garrett? Didn’t they want to come and visit?”

Tanya grinned at the question. “Oh those two love birds wanted some alone time.” The boys broke out in laughter once more but Jaspers laugh was cut short when Alice went rigid next to him. Her eyes were glazed over but her expression revealed the horror of what she was seeing.

“Alice, what is it? What do you see?” Jasper asked. The entire room was silent now.

“No, no, no!” Alice fought. She did not want her vision to be real. “No! This can’t be happening!”

In a fraction of a second, Carlisle was kneeling beside her, looking up into her face. “Alice, honey, you need to tell us what is going on. Maybe we can help.”

The vision was over and Alice’s eyes were closed shut. She buried her face into Jasper’s chest. “No, you can’t help. It’s too late. It’s done.”

“What’s done Alice? Please, you need to tell us.” Carlisle pushed.

Alice’s shoulders were heaving as she carried the burden of knowing the truth. She pulled away from Jaspers chest and looked at Tanya. “I’m so sorry Tanya. It’s Kate.”

Tanya jumped up from her seat. “What do you mean? What happened to Kate?” The panic struck Tanya as the fear of losing another sister overwhelmed her.

Alice forced the words out of her mouth. “Kate has been captured. It looks like the Volturi. I saw Jane, Corin, and Felix.” Alice struggled with the next part. “Garrett… He tried to protect her… I’m so sorry…” Alice was shaking her head trying to shake the images out of her mind.

“What Alice?” Eleazar asked desperately. “What happened to Garrett?”

Alice was digging her fingers so deep into the couch cushions that her fingernails shredded the upholstery. “I’m sorry… Garrett… is dead. They killed him.”

“No!” Tanya cried. “We have to go! We have to get back in time to save them!”

Alice shook her head. “It’s too late. It’s over now.”

A cry of anguish escaped Tanya’s throat. Eleazar and Carmen wrapped their arms around her, trying to calm her down.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner. I wasn’t watching. It was only when Bella asked about Kate and Garrett that I let my mind wander to them. If I had been paying closer attention then we could have done something!” Alice was overcome with despair.

“Don’t blame yourself, Alice.” Jasper pleaded with her. “This isn’t your fault.” He tried to soother her by pushing calm feelings into her but she knew better and was aware of his tactics.

Before another word could be said, the phone rang. Edward thought about letting it go but then worried that it might be important, it might be Kate needing their help. He ran into the kitchen and answered the cordless phone.

“Hello?”

“Edward!” It was Jacob’s voice. “Edward! She’s gone!” He was clearly frantic.

“Whoa, calm down Jake. Who’s gone?”

“Nessy! They took her! I don’t know what happened but now she’s gone! Edward, we’ve gotta find her! You have to help me…” Jacob’s voice was cracking as his emotions took over.

Edward was bewildered at what he was hearing. “Jake, listen to me very closely. Who took Renesmee?”

“I think it was the Volturi. Before I could even react or phase everything went black! The kind of blackout that Alec is capable of. I thought I was dead. I couldn’t hear anything, or see, smell, or even feel anything. After a while all my senses came back to me but Nessy was gone! Oh God, Edward, we have to find her…” Jacob was struggling trying to keep it together.

Bella was now at Edward’s side. “What happened? Is it Renesme?” Her golden eyes pleaded with Edward to tell her everything would be okay but he couldn’t lie to her.

Edward turned to face everyone in the living room, they all now had their eyes trained on him. “Renesmee has been captured as well.”

I can't wait -- I'm with those who are also betting that Angie is going to show up, despite what Christopher and Alice have promised her about protecting Edward, so I can't wait to see what happens.

Thanks so much! It is REALLY good to be back!!!

All Worlds Collide
Chapter 16

“NO!!!!”

Bella screamed as the ball of fire which Afton sent out ripped through the room and found its target. The allies had been forced to the ground, withering in pain due to the burst of power that Jane found after witnessing her brother’s death. The fire slammed hard against Edward’s chest, immediately igniting his entire body in flames. The burn that Edward felt was unimaginable as the fire mixed with the venom that flowed through his veins. He turned his terror filled eyes to his beautiful wife, his Bella and with the very last bit of strength and energy left in him he whispered to her.

“I love you Bella, I always will.”

Everyone was helpless but to watch as Aro’s intentions played out. Bella became insane with agony as Edward’s body was consumed by the flames.

Angelina’s eyes bolted open. She awoke in a panic, her body covered in sweat, shaking. She was unable to rid her mind of the horrible vision which she had just witnessed in her dream. She stood from the bed and walked to the window, gazing out at the beautiful Italian landscape while her mind remained elsewhere. Never had Angelina seen the dream end that way, what could it mean? Would Christopher truly be able to save Edward, or had she just inadvertently placed him literally in the line of fire as well? Still completely unable to calm herself she just stood there starring out of the window allowing her mind to ponder over all of the possible consequences.

Team A: Edward, Bella, Jacob, Christopher - 8:41pm

Edward smashed through the wooden door that led to the turret and the others came in with him. Upon seeing Aro sitting on his wooden throne, Jacob’s body began to shiver violently until his body exploded into his wolf form. He bared his teeth and growled at the man responsible for kidnapping his newlywed bride. Quickly their eyes scanned the room to assess the enemy.

Beside Aro stood Sulpicia; her face was as papery and ancient as his but her expression was not as controlled. Her eyes darted around quickly and her breathing quickened. It was obvious that she was terrified.

On the other side of Aro stood Renata; she had her fingers pinched tightly to his cloak as usual and she wore an expression of determination. Her physical shield was enough to protect her and her master, but no others were guaranteed a safe place under her invisible force field.

Beside her, Chelsea and Afton were poised and ready to fight. Afton already had the room aglow with candles so that he could manipulate the flames and use them to destroy his opponents at the flick of a finger. In any other situation it would have given the room a romantic ambiance but at this moment in time the small flames were equated with death. Chelsea flexed her ability over the twenty-four lower level Volturi guards in the room. Under her influence, they were ready and willing to die to protect Aro.

Aro tsked scornfully. “Edward, I must say I’m surprised. I would have thought Carlisle would have taught you better manners than that. Didn’t you know that it’s rude to enter a room without knocking first?”

Edward snarled, “Didn’t you know that it’s rude to steal people’s children without permission and then try to brainwash them against their will?”

Aro tsked, “Well when you put it like that…” Then with the flick of his scum covered eyes, Aro signaled his guards to attack.

The lower level guards approached them first like the pawns of a chess board. Jacob did not hesitate to clamp his powerful jaws on the first guard and rip him to shreds. He was an alpha on a mission and he trembled from the ferocity as he stalked towards his goal.

Bella’s eyes darted around the room for something to burn but all she saw were candles and then the three wooden thrones that were guarded by Aro and his talented guards. Had they planned it this way? If there was no raging fire in the room then it would be harder to kill them. But wouldn’t it also be harder for them to kill the allies as well? No, not with Afton around. He could hurl a fire ball at them and cause the flames to expand until their bodies were engulfed.
In fact, he sucked a flame from a candle by a swift motion of his hands and manipulated the ball of flame with his fingers until it grew in size and then hurled it at Christopher. Afton’s motion was fast but Christopher was faster. He grabbed the closest lower level guard and used him as a body shield. The guard exploded into flames and it was understood just how powerful Afton would be in this fight. It was a shame they didn’t have Angelina, another pyrokinetic being, to fight with them.

At the sight of seeing the guard burst into flames, Sulpicia began screaming hysterically. She raised her hands to her face and shrilly yelped incoherent words. Sulpicia had never done well under pressure and she especially did not like fire. Aro glared at her and demanded that she shut up but it was too late- her hysteria had taken over.

Chelsea moved to her to try to calm her but then she felt something happen that she had never in her existence experienced before. Somehow she felt as six of the numerous invisible threads she controlled, that bound loyalties through her to their leaders were severed. It had not happened to those that stood with her in the turret room. As she concentrated on locating the source of the unbinding and discovering who had been freed, she was completely unprepared for what happened to her next.

All of the many threads that grounded her to those around her; the threads that ruled her world; the threads that were a vital, defining element of her existence were being manipulated. They were being unraveled. Chelsea panicked and tried to strengthen them. Using her gift to reinforce her bindings was second nature to her so it was with a complete shock of incomprehension as she felt the recoil of over two hundred bindings snap back to herself in the same instant. Its impact sent a jolt through her entire system in a flash of pain. It left her disoriented for a fraction of a second and she gasped out in response.

Only two bindings remained. The two that bound her to her masters, Aro and Caius. In horror she realized that those threads were retracting now as well. Desperately she tried to keep them strong but they were slippery and unresponsive to her attempts. With dismay she felt them retract to her being and she was completely lost from the broken connection.
“Masters,” She cried out, feeling more alone than she’d ever felt before. Aro spared her a glance but with Sulpicia’s hysteria, he misunderstood her call to be that of one for assistance to calm down his uncontrollable mate.

With a minute shake of his head, his attention returned to the battle that raged around them. Chelsea could still feel her bond to Afton, her mate, and she was grateful for that. She clung to it like the lifeline that it was. It helped her regain her deteriorating bearings. But she worried about what had made her gift behave in such a manner and how she could fix it.
In desperation, she sent out her bindings again as she concentrated on the Volturi that surrounded her. The bindings left her body but swirled out of control before returning to her with a sharp snap as though an elastic band had retracted. She focused harder, trying to squelch the unease that was beginning to rise inside of her. She sent them out again. This time they were stronger, brighter. Her intense focus illuminated the chords with a green translucent light. But as before, just seconds after sending them out, they careened out of control and collapsed around her again. Inside she was becoming as frantic as the woman she’d gone to comfort.

She tried a third time; sending her ropes out from herself. She threw all of her wild emotions into the effort. Even Sulpicia was quieted by the look on Chelsea’s face as she wondered as to its cause. This time the chords didn’t even make it away from her for more than six inches before they dissolved. In defeat she gave up in her attempts. The battle that had raged in the room around her had finally come to her. There was no more time to reason out what had gone wrong. Her concentration shifted to that of fighting for her life, though with the loss of her gift, she wasn’t sure what she had left to live for.

What Chelsea could not have known was that Carlisle had used her own gift against her and that as a result, the Volturi forces were more vulnerable than they realized. Vulnerable, because there were many guards who were not in the Volturi ranks by their own choice.

And then it happened, the event that stopped all the fighting in the room. Suddenly, everyone was on the floor burning in agony. Even the high and mighty Aro collapsed from his throne and withered in pain, flopping like a fish out of water. He knew this feeling that was causing him to suffer for he had been the one to help control and develop it. His little Jane had somehow managed to break past the barriers of her power and was now causing everyone in the building to feel the extent of her wrath. Even though Aro was suffering, he couldn’t help but smile at the sadistic pleasure of it all. Jane had always been a favorite of his. He was so proud.

Edward’s eyes were locked on Bella’s as she knelt helplessly over him. “Edward! Edward, what’s happening?” Even though the power burst had broken through her shield that she had managed to stretch over all of the allies, she did not feel any of the suffering of those around her. Her shield, though broken away from the others, had snapped back to herself and allowed her to be the only protected being in the entire Volturi Castle.

Edward’s mouth was already open as it contorted in pain. He pushed out the single name “Jane”.

Bella’s mind raced. She considered going through the castle to hunt down the little nemesis to stop her once and for all.

But time had run out. Bella could feel that something in the room had changed. She turned to look over her shoulder and watched as Aro, Sulpicia, Renata, Chelsea, and Afton rose from the floor. It was obvious that they were no longer affected by the catastrophic power surge. There were only a few other lower level Volturi Guards whose bodies remained intact. Most had been torn to shreds by the Allies and their broken body parts seemed to crawl slowly across the marble floor, searching for the other missing pieces of themselves. Those who could flee, did. Without Chelsea’s power to bind them there, they ran away from the fight, leaving a cursing Aro glaring behind them.

Bella stood from the floor to meet what was left of her opponents. One to Five were not good odds, but she would never go down without a fight. Desperately she pushed her shield away from herself in an effort to shield Edward and the rest of her family. The weight she struggled against was staggering. It felt as though gale-force winds hammered her shield down; battering it back with a resounding snap. She tried again forcing all of her concentration into the task. Sulpicia seemed to have calmed somewhat as she saw Bella pause and she and Chelsea charged her. They both smacked their marble hard bodies against her and pushed her back against the turret’s curved wall.

“Keep her there,” Aro instructed. “I want her to watch.”

Chelsea and Sulpicia grabbed either arm and used their vice grips to lock her against the wall. Even though Bella had the super strength of a vampire, she did not have more power than two super strength vampires.

Aro’s milky red eyes settled on the tormented Edward who lay abandoned on the ground, utterly helpless. The corner of Aro’s mouth lifted with the beginnings of a sick smile. “Afton,” he called. “Would you do me the honors?”

Afton nodded at his master. Even without Chelsea’s forced bond, Afton had a loyalty to the only family he had ever known. They were all that he knew of love, and he would do anything for them. With familiar ease, Afton cupped one of the candle lit flames until it floated between his palms. He turned to face Edward who had now managed to put himself upright onto his knees. Even as the pain tormented his body, he would meet death face to face. His shirt was torn in the front and it was easy to see his heaving chest as his body struggled to breathe, struggling for the familiarity of life. His golden eyes locked onto Afton’s. He tried to control his face, desperate not to show fear in his last few seconds.

Afton manipulated the ball of fire in his hands, ready to strike. He raised his arms up above his head and forced the flaming orb across the room.

“NO!!!” Bella screamed. She fought against Chelsea and Sulpicia, but still, she was not strong enough. Her eyes and heart filled with panic as the realization of losing Edward forever began to sink in.

In that instant the flames of each and every candle in the room began to burn brighter, stronger, grew taller as they flared up towards the high ceiling of the turret. The ball of fire hung frozen, suspended in the air within inches of Edward’s chest. He looked down at it in shock and horror. Afton looked confused as one by one each occupant in the room turned to see what had stopped it. There, in the center of the room stood a human--long brown hair pulled back from her face, intense, huge brown eyes, her right arm outstretched towards Edward, her eyes focused on the fire that hovered before him—Angelina. Aro’s expression turned to curiosity. ‘How is it,’ he wondered, ‘that this mortal came to be standing here before us, as if by some form of magic? She just appeared out of nowhere.’

Little did Aro know that Angelina had decided to disobey Christopher's edict and used her dream spell to teleport herself to the exact location she needed to be, at the exact moment that she needed to be there. Angelina looked to Christopher, who was still pinned to the ground by pain, her eyes pleaded with him as she spoke in a whisper. “Forgive me.”

Christopher, trying hard to get through the pain, sighed deeply in response to her. “But of course Mio amore.”

Since Angelina arrived in the room after Jane’s power burst she was the only one outside of the Voturi and Bella who was unaffected by it.

Aro stood from his throne clapping his hands. “Quite impressive my dear,” He said addressing Angelina. “I do not believe that I have ever had the privilege to witness a human do such things. I cannot help but wonder what you would be capable of doing with such gifts if you were to join my guard.” Aro was more thinking aloud than speaking to Angelina but then his focus truly settled on her. “I would like to make you an offer, a bargain if you will.” He went on, “If you were to agree to stay here as part of my guard and use your gifts to aid us, then I will agree to allow your friends here to go freely.” He waited for her response.

Angelina used her right hand to force the ball of fire away from Edward bringing it to herself she shrunk it in size and played with it in her hands as she allowed Aro to believe that she was thinking over his offer. She closed her hands over it and extinguished the flame. Angelina then looked around the room at the others and realized that some unforeseen force was crippling them which meant that Bella’s shield was not working to protect them. Bella, however, seem to be unaffected by this, although she was still pinned to the far wall by Chelsea and Sulpicia. Jacob, still in his wolf form, and Christopher continued to lay crippled on the ground. Angelina took in the seriousness of the situation at the sight of her immortal love in pain. She thought for a moment what she could possibly say or do to help get them all out of this, then turned back to Aro and answered his question.

“Umm….Yeah I don’t think that’s gonna work for me.” She replied sarcastically.

“What a shame.” Aro responded to her, his head cocked to the side, his eyes wide with curiosity as he approached her. “May I?” Aro extended his hand to hers. Angelina became a bit nervous at this gesture, she knew that Aro could read any thought she had ever had by just one touch and feared what he might see. She withdrew back from him but he was faster than she was as he grabbed a hold of her right hand quickly. Aro closed his eyes and allowed the visions to come to him like a surge of morphine. Angelina struggled against him. Christopher growled against the pain and the sight of Angelina in Aro’s grasp. Aro’s eyes shot open as he stared at the human before him with an expression of pure anger and hatred laced with a little bit of fear. He dropped her hand and Angelina knew that he’d seen the truth about who she was and where she’d come from. Aro turned to Afton and in a fierce voice demanded, “Kill her!”

Afton bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment and pulled another ball of fire from a candle that burned nearby.

Christopher became enraged. “If you do I’ll kill you all, I swear it!!” He yelled at Afton.

Aro took notice of his remark but paid him no mind, for Aro knew now the relationship between this Italian vampire and this mysterious human.

Angelina knew that this battle was meant to happen. She took a deep breath and called upon the fire that burned within her. She could feel the heat as the power of The Flame took her body over. Once again she had managed to force herself to feel the energy that she was meant for.

Afton sent out the ball of fire at her with an enormous amount of force. Christopher and the others were helpless but to watch as the fire hurled through the air intended for Angelina. She extended her right arm and forced the flames to the floor. Her eyes remained focused on Afton. This process went on for a moment, Afton striking at her and Angelina deflecting it. Finally Angelina decided she would have to strike back before he was able to catch her off guard. She focused all of her attention on him and as he sent out his next shot she readied herself and right when it was about to strike her she reflected it right back at Afton. He managed to move just in time.

Aro grew impatient. “This is going nowhere!” He shouted.

Afton’s face took on a look of determination. He didn’t like disappointing his master. He focused on Angelina with new vigor but then suddenly, something changed.

Jacob leapt up onto his paws and stood growling at Aro. Edward looked to Bella and within an instant was by her side. Chelsea and Sulpicia swiftly let her go and moved away from the couple. They could now see that they no longer had the upper hand and needed to regroup so they made their way back to the other Volturi who were positioned near the three wooden thrones. Bella clung to Edward, relieved that he was safe, but still unsure of how this would all play out.

Christopher in an instant stood protectively in front of Angelina. Afton looked to Aro for direction now that it was apparent that Jane’s power was no longer crippling the others. Aro’s eyes grew wide as he wondered what could have happened to his Jane.

Before Aro could issue his next order of commands, Jacob finally got the opportunity he had been waiting for and took it. He leapt through the air, his huge angry eyes set on Aro. The Volturi master managed to move at the last second consequently allowing Jake to instead land hard on Sulpicia, slamming her to the ground. Jacob tore his razor sharp teeth into Sulpicia’s throat and she let out a gurgled moan as he ripped her apart. Aro watched in horror the destruction of his mate.

“SULPICIA! MY LOVE! NOOO!!!” Aro howled in agony. He then fixed his furious crimson eyes on the beast that was devouring his wife. “You! You are killing the only thing I could ever love!” He began to move menacingly toward Jacob and his broken wife but Angelina shot out a wall of fire rising up from the floor creating a divider between them. However, Renata was still pinching on to his cloak and the two of them walked through the wall of flame completely unscathed. As long as Renata’s shield was protecting Aro, he was invincible.

So when the thought was created out of the mind of a broken heart, Edward reacted quickly to take advantage of the moment of weakness. With his impossible speed, he cut off Aro’s path, blocking him from getting any closer to Jacob who was growling over Sulpicia’s body parts like a dog protecting his bone.

Aro snorted, “What do you think you’re doing?”

With one swift movement, Edward did what no one had done in over a millennium. He landed a punch squarely on the center of Aro’s face. The ancient staggered backwards and cupped his hands over his nose and mouth, his eyes wide with utter astonishment. He turned his attention to Renata, his most faithful servant. “Renata?”

She avoided looking at him while her face maintained an emotion of despair.

Edward said aloud the words that she could not. “You hurt her, Aro. All this time, all these years, you’ve led her to believe that you loved her. You made her think that she was special to you. So when Sulpicia was attacked she thought that finally, maybe the two of you could be together, really be together, like mates. That perhaps you would finally make her your queen. But you messed up, didn’t you Aro? You said aloud the thing that you shouldn’t have. You said that Sulpicia was the only thing you could ever love. So now Renata knows your secret- that you’ve strung her along for centuries. She now understands you never intended to make her anything more than just your dirty little secret. Can you really blame her for not wanting to protect you?”

Aro looked at her to see if it was true but the truth was written all over her face. It was in the heaviness of her eyes, the trembling of her lips. His tone turned to urgent desperation, “Renata, I-“

Smack! Edward landed another punch into his face. The impact seemed to put a crack in his ancient, petrified skin. Edward continued to pummel the ancient vampire whose fighting skills were out of practice to say the least. Aro had always had a host of talented guards to protect him; he never dreamed that he would have to defend himself in hand to hand combat.

Renata hung to the side like a broken shell of a girl but Afton and Chelsea started to make their way towards their leader to try to help him. Angelina and Christopher had other plans for the pair, cutting them off and engaging them in battles of their own.

Suddenly a sharp howl pierced through the room. Bella looked to Jacob expecting to see him being attacked but he just lay on the ground howling sorrowfully. It started to sound like the howls were coming from everywhere. She realized that the wolves who were outside were howling too. Instinctively she looked to Edward to translate their thoughts.

He had Aro backed against a wall but he turned to face the others in the room. His face was a physical manifestation of the painful sounds Jacob was making. “It’s Quil…” Edward started. “He’s dead.”

Quil had actually been killed during Jane’s attack but Jacob’s mind was so engulfed with thoughts of rage and revenge towards Aro that he had practically blocked out all the thoughts of the other wolves. It wasn’t until he had finished tearing Sulpicia to shreds that the voices of his tortured brothers and sister came flooding into his head. Through Embry’s eyes he could see Quil’s body in his arms turning cold. It was too much.

The other allies felt for him but the Volturi would not allow any of them time to grieve. Edward turned back around to finish Aro but he had vanished. His eyes scanned the turret but Aro was nowhere to be found.

He turned to Renata, “Did you see him? Where did he go?”

She fidgeted with her hands as she spoke, “I don’t know, I wasn’t watching.”
Edward let out an exasperated groan. “Well, are you surrendering?”

She looked at him for the first time and said “I guess there’s nothing else left for me to do.”

“Well then make yourself useful.” He picked up Aro’s wooden throne and tossed it to her. She swiftly caught it in her hands but looked at it like she had no idea what to do with it. Edward then grabbed Caius’ throne and began breaking it into splintered pieces of wood. He then assembled it into a pile. The realization donned on Renata’s face and she began to disassemble the throne that belonged to the man she had been the mistress of. Edward moved onto Marcus’ old throne and added those parts to the fire as well.

Bella took one of the nearby candles and used it to light the pile of wood on fire. The three of them began to go through the room picking up the bits of torn flesh and tossed them into the fire. A few of the guards had managed to half reassemble themselves and were more than disappointed to be torn apart again and tossed into the flames. Bella was careful as she approached Jacob who was still lying on the floor next to Sulpicia’s remains. She picked up the broken parts with care as Jacob lay there whimpering and tossed them into the fire.

Meanwhile, Afton was still battling the fire balls that Angelina sent his way while sending his own back at her. He was becoming annoyed by this mortal who was almost as fast as he was. ‘There must be a way to distract her’, he thought. He then glanced to Christopher, who was still battling Chelsea and blocking each and every one of her strikes. Afton sent out another ball of fire, but this time Angelina wasn’t the intended target. She wasn’t expecting where the fire was directed; at the very last moment she realized and used her energy to move it, but it wasn’t far enough. The fire ball slammed hard into the back of Christopher’s right shoulder while Chelsea quickly moved away from him. His screams of agony filled the room as his body fell to the ground; not only due to the force of fire with which he was hit, but also due to the searing pain he now felt.

Angelina became more than enraged. Her eyes filled with the fire of The Flame, that which she was prophesied to be. Christopher clutched his shoulder as he leaned against the wall for stability. He watched as Angelina allowed the full amount of magical energy that was her birthright to take over her body. Christopher had seen this ritual before from her and knew what to expect. He almost felt bad for Afton now. Angelina threw her head back; her arms flew up at her sides outstretched. She then brought her arms together before her. The fingers of her hands met and formed a triangle. Through this shape she sent out the full force of her power at Afton. Dread filled his eyes. He wasn’t fast enough to avoid it. The incredible burst of fire caught him in his chest, immediately igniting the venom that flowed in his veins. It took but a matter of seconds for the fire to entirely consume Afton.

Angelina dropped her arms to her sides, nearly drained completely of energy she turned to Christopher and forced a smile as she made her way over to him. He looked at her with proud eyes. His shoulder was already beginning to heal itself. He leaned forward, pushing himself off of the wall and smiled at her as he gazed lovingly into her big brown eyes.

Suddenly, his eyes filled with shock and horror. Angelina was confused for a moment by the new expression his face took on. But much too soon she understood, as she felt the sharp tearing pain at the left side of her throat. Chelsea gripped her shoulders hard from behind as her teeth ripped into Angelina’s flesh. Angelina screamed a terrifying cry of agony that tore at Christopher’s heart, catching the attention of the others as well.

Christopher reacted swiftly. He tore Chelsea away from Angelina and threw her into the wall. Angelina’s body fell to the ground shaking violently. Because her body temperature was higher than a normal person’s, the ferocity of the venom was amplified as it quickly ushered its way through her veins.

Before she could strike again, Edward and Bella finished Chelsea by tearing her to shreds and throwing her struggling parts into the burning pile which had filled the turret with an overbearing stench of death. Bella then ran to Angelina, fearful of her human counterpart’s demise. She saw the wound that Chelsea had left on the mortal girl and instinctively held her breath, turning turned to Edward who had rushed to her side as well. Bella’s gaze held sadness in her eyes as she shook her head. They both knew that this was a very bad situation for this poor human, Angelina, to be in.

Christopher then caught the scent he had feared-- Angelina’s blood, which flowed freely thanks to Chelsea. He returned to her side and lifted her gently to him. With tears in her eyes, Angelina looked up at him as she tried to fight the burning that took over the usual warmth that she felt in her veins. Christopher’s worst nightmare was playing out before him.
Edward looked down at the floor with his head tilted to the side, as if someone were whispering into his ear.

“What is it, Edward?” Bella asked him.

Despite the dire situation before them Edward couldn’t help but smile. He placed his hands on Bella’s shoulders and looked her in the eyes as he spoke. “It’s Carlisle. He just sent me the thought that they found Renesmee and that’s she’s alright.”

Bella’s face broke out into a smile and she wrapped her arms around her husband. “Oh thank God.”

The two of them quickly turned to Jacob and when they told him he turned back into his human form and dressed himself in the shorts that were tied to his leg. “Where is she?” Jacob asked, needing to see her to really feel like everything was okay.

“Outside with Esme,” Edward looked over at Angelina who was still on the ground with Christopher hunched over her.

“Maybe we should get Carlisle in here.”

“He’s in the ballroom right now with Embry and Quil.” Jacob’s voice cracked when he said Quil’s name. “It doesn’t look like there’s anything he can do for him. I can run over there and tell Carlisle that Angelina needs him on my way out to Nessie.”

“That would be great.” Edward gave Jacob’s shoulder a tight squeeze. “And tell Renesmee that we love her and that we’re so relieved that she’s okay. We’ll be out as soon as we can.”

Jacob nodded and quickly headed out the door leaving Edward and Bella to watch over Christopher and Angelina. Renata still sat quietly to the side, as if trying to understand all the events that had just happened.

*Angelina lay dying in Christopher’s arms, his heartache clouding his thoughts. Edward wrapped his arms around Bella’s waist and held her tightly to him as together they watched a mortified Christopher beg for forgiveness from his nearly dying human love.

“Please Mio amore forgive me for I have failed you.” His words were laced with the pain that his heart felt.

Edward was all too aware of this pain. He closed his eyes and buried his head into Bella’s hair. He was reminded of the day that she gave birth to their daughter. The same day he’d been forced to take her mortal life, or lose her forever. Never would he have wished this situation on another of his kind. But here he was reliving it all over again as he watched the human who had moments ago saved his own life; as she was about to lose hers.

Carlisle entered the room moments later. “What happened here?” He asked.

It was Edward who answered. “She saved my life then killed Afton,” He lowered his eyes in regret. “But Chelsea attacked her.”

Carlisle sighed hard, this was not good news and he knew it. He approached Christopher. “Christopher, may I?” He asked gesturing to Angelina.

Christopher was hesitant but reluctantly placed Angelina back down on the floor so that the doctor could look her over. Carlisle examined her briefly. He then looked to Christopher, who was momentarily undone by the strength and compassion for him he found in the doctor’s golden eyes. He sucked in a shocked breath full of air. The taste of Angelina’s blood lingered on his tongue and twisted his stomach as he knew it hung heavy in the air. His Angelina had fought the good fight, but he wasn’t ready for her to go quietly into death, that dark night.

“The heat within her blood is causing the venom to spread much faster than it normally would. I’m so very sorry, but it is already too late for us to attempt to remove the venom from her system. I’m afraid that we are left with but two options now…”

Christopher looked at him trying desperately to hold back the anger and anguish that he felt at Carlisle’s response.

“We could wait and see how Chelsea’s venom affects her, allow it to run its course. There however lies a possibility she could die before the transformation is completed. Or we could ensure her transformation ourselves. This, my friend is your decision to make…”

Neither option was one that Christopher wanted to consider, but he was left with no other alternatives now. With his left hand he removed a few strands of hair from his withering and convulsing love’s face. Her skin was sweaty and hot to the touch and he knew that she was experiencing a great deal of pain. The thought of this alone was killing him; to be so helpless watching her in agony was more painful than he could possibly be expected to bear. His greatest fears were being realized; to be within hours of her mortal death, unable move back the hands of time; to forever lose the sound of her beating heart. Or even worse still, to lose her forever.

YAY FIRST COMMENT
A few of the guards had managed to half reassemble themselves and were more than disappointed to be torn apart again and tossed into the flames. this was hillarious...

But, OMG, what happens to Angie?
Loved that line too !!!

Great blending of stories, emotions and talent.
What an interesting plot twist...totally unexpected, as Angel --> has already started her sequel to DO, and Angelina is still human in that...Hmmmmm......what a well written chapter!!!! And among the best of the best cliff hangers!!! I knew Angelina would not be able to stay away. And, of course, Edward would not die, but I am so sad that it is Quil who has died...and I am anxious about Esme and our Renesmee pretender. Is it Kieu? If so, things may be alright, but then ....Wow!! Ladies, please don't make us wait too long for the next chapter....I'm sure everyone else will be on pins and needles, too! Great writing!!!
OOOOOOMMMMMMMGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost died when the fire went for Edward.... Poor Quil and Angelina... My emotions are all over the place. That was a great great chapter!!!!!! I hope the fry Aro for wanting Bella to watch Edward die. OMG. I agree with Pam Cullen PLease dont make us wait for long it will be TORTURE..........
Angel -->;, I was trying to remember the name of your sequel/prequel. Would you be kind enough to send me the link via PM? Thanks so much. Knowing that it is a prequel to this one makes a few more things possible. I'm anxious to find out what happens to Angelina. Surely she will survive, especially with Carlisle there....I hope, at any rate!!!!! More soon, please!!!!
