Chapter 1 Forks

Chapter 1 Forks
Every summer, I went to Forks to stay with my dad. But, this time was different. This time, I was staying for the whole year. I wanted to give my mom some space. She wanted to spend more time with Phil who’s always traveling, so I said ‘you go with Phil. Charlie will take care of me.’ And that’s how I ended up in this small town with its rain and its cloudy skies.
Nothing had changed since I was here last summer. My room was the same, has been since I was a baby. I stood in the doorway with my luggage, staring at the old rocking chair in the middle of my room. First chance I get, I’m putting it down in the basement.
“Bella.”
Charlie called for me, making his way up the stairs.
“Yeah, Dad?”
“I talked with your mother. I already enrolled you into Forks High School. You start tomorrow.”
Great. I get to start over at a new high school. I was practically invisible at my old one in Arizona. I was a ghost. Since this town is so small, maybe the school will be different. Maybe, I’ll be different.
“Hey, Dad, what’s for dinner, tonight?”
Charlie hesitated. He wasn’t a great cook. Fish was always at the top of the menu at his place, and not because it’s his favorite dish. He loves to fish. Got to do something with all those fish that he catches.
“Fish fillet,” he responded, and leaned in. “I hope you don’t mind.”
“No. Fish is great, Dad.”
He nodded and smiled. Fish wasn’t great. I thought I’d humor him, and myself.
At dinner, a piece of baked cod lay dead across my plate. I stabbed at it with my fork. Charlie sat across from me with the same meal. He reached for the bottle of ketchup at the center of the table and squeezed it over his food.
“Aren’t you hungry?” he asked. I took a deep breath and sighed. I could see now, if I were going to survive mealtime, I was going to have to mix it up, myself.
“You should let me make dinner, tomorrow, Dad,” I offered. He looked up, stupefied.
“Huh? No,” he shook his head. “I’ll make dinner. That’s my job.”
“But, Dad, fish… every night is…”
“I know,” he said. “Boring.”
“You should let me cook for you.”
“I’ll order out, tomorrow. What do you want? Pizza? Chinese?”
“Pizza,” I said.
“Pizza it is,” he said, with a smile stretching underneath his mustache. Our conversation ran dry. Neither of us was much for talkers. Charlie and I had that in common. He was the strong, silent type. I had inherited much of his quiet personality. I don’t consider myself a shy person, just quiet and sometimes, awkward. But, most people see me as shy. That’s just how I come off.
We didn’t mind the silence, we invited it. We were used to it. After our quiet dinner, I headed up to my room for a shower.
I dumped my personal items out on the bathroom counter. One good thing about staying with Charlie is I won’t have Rene hovering over me all the time. I can go shopping alone and do other things without her trying to make choices for me.
The water takes a while to get hot. I had forgotten and stepped inside the shower. Ice cold water attacked me, making me quiver. It took nearly 2 minutes to get hot.
Later, I watched TV, downstairs in the living room, until I fell asleep. I felt Charlie picking me up and carrying me upstairs to my room, but I was too knocked out to care.
The alarm clock got me up the next day. It was still dark outside, so I was a bit confused about what time it was.
“Bella, time for school,” Charlie called out in the hall. I groaned, loudly, and got up despite my reluctance.
Charlie was in his police uniform, about to head out the door when I came down stairs with my backpack.
“Come on, I’ll give you a ride,” he said.
“I’m a senior. I don’t want to show up on the first day of school with my dad… in a cop car.”
Charlie laughed. “How about I park half a mile away from the school, and you jump out when no one is looking.”
“Not funny, Dad.”
“Come on. No one will care. I’ll see what we can do about getting you a car, later.”
“How much later?”
“Come on. We don’t want to be late.”
So, I got into the cruiser with Charlie. Inside, I was dying, mortified. He got the car started and we were on our way.
“So, what’s Phil like?” he asked, out of the blue.
“Phil? Oh yeah, he’s great,” I said.
“Just great?”
I paused. “We don’t talk much.”
Charlie cocked an eyebrow.
“We don’t have anything in common,” I went on. “I hardly see him, anyway. He’s always gone.”
“How does your mom feel about that?”
“Why do you care?” I asked, curiously.
“I care because… you’re mom and I might not be together anymore, but I still want the best for her.”
He sounded a little nervous.
“That’s nice, Dad.”
He fell silent and I reached for the radio right when he pulled up to a curb. I ducked before seeing kids walking towards the school building.
“I thought you were going to park somewhere else!”
Charlie chuckled. “I thought you knew I was joking.”
“Well, your sarcasm was totally lost on me, Dad,” I growled. I opened the door and got out.
“Bye, Bells. Have a good day.”
I slammed the door and stood back to watch him drive off. I hadn’t realized I was being watched until I turned around. A bunch of students were staring at me. I couldn’t decide quick enough if I should introduce myself or keep walking. I kept walking out of shattered nerves. A few of the kids laughed.
The school only had double doors, no security like in Arizona, and no cops hanging around metal detectors or patrolling the hallways. I felt like I was in Kansas.
After I equipped myself with a schedule, I started the daunting task of locating all my classes, memorizing them and the room numbers to which they belong.
A bump pushed me forward, knocking me into someone’s back. He turned around, scowling at me. The boy who bumped me started to apologize.
“Oh. Sorry,” he said. His hair was straight and jet black. “You’re Isabella, the chief’s daughter, right?”
“Um, yeah,” I said.
The other boy turned his scowl into a grin. He had shoulder length brown hair that was flat ironed straight. He held out his hand for me to shake.
“I’m Ben,” he said. “Nice to meet you.”
“I’m Eric,” the other boy broke between us, eagerly. “It’s nicer to meet you.”
Eric had glasses and was overly friendly. Ben wore a letterman jacket, obvious jock.
“He’s a geek,” Ben said, cortly. “Don’t mind him. I can show you around, if you would like me.”
“I like you,” I said. “to,” I added. “I mean, I’d like you to… show me around.”
“I’ll come with,” Eric said. “Just in case, Benjamin here gets lost. He's not very bright.”
“Haha, real funny,” Ben said, sarcastically.
“Um, guys, I don’t want to be late,” I broke in, meekly.
“Sure,” Ben said, putting his fist on his waist, inviting me to put my arm through the loop he made with his arm. Eric walked behind us with a stoic expression.
After my first class, biology, was over. I stepped outside to see Eric leaning against a locker, waiting for me. I sighed and walked away before he could see me.
The cafeteria was loud and crowded. I saw Ben walking with his tray, and I thought I’d sit with him since I knew who he was. But, I paused when I realized he was heading for the table lined with jocks and a couple of cheerleaders. I flew into a panic and spun around, spilling my tray of food all over some girl. Mortified, I leaned down to pick up what was salvageable of my lunch.
“I’m so sorry,” I squeaked.
“It’s okay,” she laughed, and leaned down to help. “The janitor will clean it up. Get off the floor, you’re making a scene.” She pulled me up by my jacket. I had two apples and a carton of choco milk in my hands.
“I’m Angela,” she said, holding a plain milk. She had dark hair and a smooth, pretty face underneath her glasses. We moved quickly over to a vacant table and sat down.
“I’m Bella,” I said, immediately. “I’m so sorry.”
“Stop it. You didn’t get me,” she said, wiping mashed potatoes off the rim of her shirt. “Well, you got me a little.”
I sighed and put my head down.
“You’re Chief Swan’s daughter.”
“Yes, I am.”
“Welcome to Forks. Or should I say… welcome back,” she said it like a question, and then laughed. “I see you around, sometimes, during the summers. You keep to yourself a lot.”
“Oh, I probably meant to say hello.”
“-It’s okay. I’m a little shy, myself. Not like it’s easy to fit in around here,” she said, eyeing the table Ben was seated.
“Do you know Ben?” I asked. Then, I winced at myself. “Of course you know Ben. I met him earlier. And, -“
“What did he say to you?” she cut me off, her words rushing.
I stopped, alarmed. “Nothing. He showed me around. He was really nice… and helpful.”
“I’m sure he was,” she said, cynically. I looked over at his table. They all looked so happy, laughing and talking. “See the blonde chick right under him, that’s Lauren. She’s his girlfriend. And the girl next to her with the brown hair and blue eyes is Jessica. Across from them are the other jock straps, Tyler, Jack, Mike, Masen, and Cody. They’re all jerks, just so you know.”
“Thank you,” I said, uncomfortably.
“You’re welcome,” she said, with a big smile.
“Hey, guys!” chimed a familiar voice. It was Eric. I cringed when he sat down next to me. “Bella!” He hugged me with one arm. “How was biology, honey?”
“Boring,” I said, peeling his arm off of me.
“Hey, babe!” Angela exclaimed. She reached over and kissed Eric. I was shocked. I don’t know how it happened, but it did. Angela and Eric had sealed my fate. I felt cursed. I get to be a dork all over again.
“Bella, this is my babe, Angie,” Eric said.
“We’ve met,” she said.
“So, ladies, what are we doing tonight?” Eric asked.
“Hey, Bella, you can hang out with us!”
“That’s really awesome, but I don’t want to feel like a third wheel. You two are together.”
“That doesn’t mean we can’t all hang out,” Angela said, disappointed.
“Yeah. We’re all friends, here.”
“I already made plans for tonight,” I said, trying to dodge a bullet.
“Oh yeah? We can tag along,” Angela said.
“No really. I won’t be any fun. I’m not much of a hostess.”
“We can all hang out tonight. We can do something together. We promise we won’t get all happy- couple on you.”
“No, really,” I laugh, fake.
“-Isabella Swan.” I looked up when I heard my name in a brassy voice. It was Ben, and my heart literally fell into the pit of my stomach. I accidentally knocked Eric’s milk off the table. Ben caught it before it fell to the floor, and placed it back on the table. Eric narrowed his eyes and chewed his biscuit.
“Clumsy, as well as beautiful,” Ben said. Angela stuck her finger in her mouth and gagged.
“Benjamin, don’t you have a skirt tail to be chasing?” Eric asked. “I don’t think Lauren would approve of you trying to hit on my new friend, which you are failing at by the way, because she’s not interested. She’s with us.”
I wanted to stab Eric in the chest with my fork. My cheeks glow an embarrassing red.
“Oh. Is that right?” Ben leaned in, his hands clasped on the rim of the table.
“Yes, that’s right,” Angela nodded, proudly.
“She can speak for herself,” Ben snapped, causing Angela and me to jump. He turned to me. “Bella, come join us. You don’t want to be branded a nerd because of these two losers, do you? Come sit with us.”
Angela and Eric looked nervous. I felt nervous. I didn’t know how to answer. I felt obligated to stay where I was, and a part of me wanted to jump up and go with Ben.
“Come on, Bella. Come meet the guys… and the girls.”
“Maybe, some other time,” I said, in a defeated voice. Angela and Eric relaxed, satisfied.
“I tried to give you an opportunity to be one of us and you flake out.” Ben shook his head. “I tried to save you. Have fun being a loser.” He walked back over to his table. I have never been called that before, not even by kids at my old school. It really hurt, especially coming from Ben. Frankly, I was embarrassed.
“I told you they were jerks,” she said. “And don’t listen to him. He’ll say anything to bring you down. You’re not a loser. We’re not losers.”
But, he’s so hot. I could tell that Ben was going to be a big problem for me.

After school, Angela and Eric were right beside me, talking to each other. I had zoned out and was thinking. If the opportunity came, would I ditch them to be popular? As if I could ever be that. Ben had to be joking.
“Bella,” Angela said, tapping my shoulder. “We’ve never seen the inside of the chief’s house.”
“I’ll bring the movies,” Eric added.
“Movies at my place, it is,” I confirmed.
“Great! We’ll be there, tonight at 10,” Angela said.
“Can’t wait,” I said.
Eric and Angela got into a red Honda I assumed belonged to Angela since she was the one in the driver’s seat.
I had to stick around and wait for Charlie to pick me up. Charlie brought the cruiser around, finally. The remaining students watched, curious as to why the chief of the town was at the school. I put my head down and walked towards the cruiser. I hurried and got inside. Charlie smiled.
“Why are you staring at me? Drive!” I said. “Are you trying to humiliate me some more?”
Charlie sighed. “I talked to Billy. He has a truck he’s willing to give us for free.”
“Free? Why? What's wrong with it?”
Charlie sighed again. “Just be thankful you won’t have to catch a ride with me anymore.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry, Dad. My day was pretty crappy.”
“Don’t sweat it, Bella.”
“Oh. Two people from school are coming over tonight, to watch movies.”
Charlie blinked. “I thought you said you had a crappy day. Couldn’t have been that bad. You made some friends, already?”
“Why are you surprised?”
“I expected you to have a harder time, that’s all. You did good, though.”
“Don’t get too comfortable, Dad. This is just day one.”

Chapter Six Bloody First Date
I looked at the giant, white, marble piano and hit one of the keys, making a jarring noise that hurt everyone’s ears.
“Ah! Bella, no!” Alice winced. I shrugged, apologetically.
“I need to hunt,” Jasper said.
“You’re going to leave me to do all the work?” Alice asked, her eyebrows coming together.
“Carlisle is still here… somewhere. He can help you. Check the study,” Jasper suggested, taking my hand and pulling me towards the door. We were outside, now. The sky was drizzling rain.
“She’s pretty,” I said, as we walked side by side.
“You noticed, eh?” he said.
“Well, I think she’s very nice, also,” I added.
“Why are we talking about Alice?”
“She’s your lover.” I didn’t mean for it to sound like a question, but it did. My tone was shaky, which gave away my insecurity. I hated that my feelings were always on my sleeve.
“Bella, are you jealous?” he grinned.
“No!” I lied, easily. “Where are we going?” I asked, quickly changing the topic.
“We’re going to get something to eat. Are you hungry? Maybe, you should eat before me.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to gross you out, and be the reason you lose your appetite,” he said.
“I’m not hungry, anyway,” I said. I was really curious to watch him drink somebody’s blood, and I thought I’d speed up the process by not wasting any time on me.
I followed him to a secluded neighborhood. We hid behind some bushes as a Mercedez Benz pulled out of the double wide garage. When the coast was clear, Jasper ran to the garage door, and I followed closely behind him. We ducked under the door before it closed, automatically. It was dark and I couldn’t see. I felt a rush of excitement, adrenaline pumped through my veins as this felt very naughty, and I liked it. I would never break into someone’s house for fear of getting caught, and plus it’s wrong. But, with Jasper there with me, there was no way we were going to get caught. I felt ‘safe’, for lack of a better term.
“Don’t touch anything,” he told me.
There was a door that connected the house to the garage. Jasper picked the lock with his fingernail. Once, we were inside, the mat at the foot of the door lead us to the kitchen area. Jasper flicked on the light. He opened the refrigerator and peeked inside.
“Yum,” he said, in a really bored voice. He took a knife from the counter top and tossed it to me.
“Woah!” I fumbled it in my hands, afraid of the sharp point, but I didn’t drop it. He laughed at me. “Shh!” I was getting a little apprehensive, as the reality of the situation set in. What was I suppose to do with this knife? Jasper ran up to me and tucked his hands around my waist. He kissed my lips, fervently. I felt so faint, that I almost fell over backwards. He grabbed my elbow, preventing that.
“Let’s go, lover,” he said. That word, and the fact that he was talking to me, made my cheeks turn a fiery red. He laughed really loud when he saw my face. I think he only said that to make me blush, so he could laugh. We crept up the stairs. With all the noise we had been making, I was surprised that the people hadn’t woken up, yet.
It was extremely quiet upstairs. Jasper pulled me back and stood still. He listened.
“Somebody’s awake,” he said. I paused. I even held my breath. He looked around the hall and chose the door at the end of the hallway; the master bedroom. He pushed it open. The bed was messy with beige and white sheets and a matching comforter. He stepped inside the room. And he motioned for me to enter. I looked around, relieved that it was empty, or so I thought.
We saw an elderly woman hovering in the corner of the room, with a baseball bat lodged between her hands.
“Don’t come any closer!” her raspy voice shook. “I’ve called the police. I advise you to leave now. I don’t want any trouble.”
She must have heard us earlier, but was too afraid to come downstairs and check. My heart began to thud hard against my chest. Jasper reached for her baseball bat, and snapped it in half. Her eyes bucked and she scooted closer to the closet, until she was inside it. Jasper dragged her out by her arm. I stood back, fearful. He threw her body to the floor, at my feet. I fell down and edged up against the wall near a chair. She started crawling towards me, to get to the door.
That’s when Jasper pounced on her back, ripping open the nape of her neck with his teeth, tearing apart flesh. Her screams and cries made my whole body shake from fear. It felt as if it was happening to me, instead of her. The knife clutched in my hands, I was scooting back into the wall, even when there was no more space for me to move. The more he fed, the bloodier the floor became. When he was done, he turned her over onto her back. He looked up at me, and motioned for me to come. It took me a minute to get to my feet. I raised the knife and saw that my hand was bleeding. I was so focused on Jasper and the woman, that I hadn't felt the blade when I squeezed my hand around it.
“Stab her,” he said, hands, face, and clothes drenched in her blood. I stared at him, confused.
“But, you already-“
“It needs to look like she was murdered.”
“But, she was!”
“No. It needs to look natural, like someone came in and killed her.”
“Why can’t you do it,” I cried, in a panicky voice.
“This is your first lesson, Bella. You need to get use to this kind of thing. This is your life, now,” he said. The woman coughed up blood and I jumped, realizing she wasn’t dead. The tips of her hands and her feet shook, creepily.
“What’s happening to her!” I screamed.
“Her nervous system still works. She’s in a lot of pain, right now.” His voice was cold.
“Well, make it stop!” I screamed. He got off his knees and looked at the knife in my hands. I knew what he wanted me to do. “No, I can’t,” I breathed.
“Finish her!” he boomed. I dropped to my knees and held the knife over the woman’s chest. “Cut her throat,” he advised, calmly. I moved the knife upward, and dropped the blade on the skin. I pressed it down, but I didn’t do it hard enough. It felt like I didn’t press it at all. “Hurry up,” he said, hearing the faint sound of far away sirens. I held the knife up above the woman, and brought it down as hard as I could. The knife went through her neck, and into the floor she lay on, and she coughed blood on me. “Now, her heart,” he said.
I tugged the knife out and stabbed her chest. Angry, I took it out and stabbed her again, and again, and again. She was finally dead, and I was ashamed of myself, throwing myself over her lifeless body. I looked up at Jasper, and he looked at me like I was the crazy one. His eyes calmed.
“We don’t exist,” he said. He left the room, and I followed him. I could hear the sirens, now. She really did call the police. The next thing I thought of was the knife. I wanted to toss it. I was about to toss it in the trash, when Jasper stopped me.
“That’s a stupid idea,” he said, snatching the knife from me. We went to the front door. A loud, banging noise caused me to freeze up with fear. Jasper grabbed my hand, and said, “Come on.” We turned around. We ran out the back door as police officers were banging on the front door.
“You didn’t touch anything, did you?” he asked, as we were speed walking.
“Only the knife you gave me,” I said, my voice meek and shaky. “Jasper, what about you? Your fingerprints are all over that place.”
“I don’t exist, remember.” He said.
“But-“
He turned on me, and grabbed my shoulders. “I don’t exist. I am dead! No one is going to come looking for Jasper Whitlocke. Get that through your head.” My eyes were bucked and I was shaking. “I mean… you’re safe, okay. Don’t worry about it.”
“I was worrying about you,” I stammered. It looked like he tried to smile, but failed. He smoothed my hair out of my face.
“Don’t do that,” he said, gently. I nodded. We headed back to Carlisle’s house, so I could get in my truck and go home. I got cleaned up in one of the girl’s bathrooms. Jasper insisted on riding with me, so he came along. As I was driving, I rationed that he was a murderer, and now, so was I. I was going to tell Charlie that there was a party and I lost track of time. The first part was totally true. It had been a horrific night, something I was going to have to get use to, according to Jasper. But, I couldn’t see myself going through that again. Why would I put myself through that? Why risk getting caught? While one side of me was anxious and fearful, the other was excited and getting greedy. The whole thing resulted in giving me a great high, which was scary to me. Was I a monster?
“That was a very botched job,” Jasper said. I looked at him as he was staring through the windshield, sternly watching the road. He seemed to be complaining, but kept his voice even to keep me calm.“Too messy.”
It made me worry and I started to go into panic mode.
“Botched? Are we going to get caught?”
“No. Calm down. I only meant the clean up could have been better. But, we didn’t have time,” he said, annoyed that the police had showed up. “It takes practice.” I stared at the road. I kept my hands tight on the wheel, as to keep from losing it and driving off the road. His words were making me nervous. “You’ll learn.” He sighed and leaned back in the seat, sleepily.
I parked the truck right next to Charlie’s cruiser. There was another truck in the driveway, an old fashioned, boxy- looking truck. I turned off my truck and we were sitting in the dark. I had nothing to say. But, everything from my body language to my heavy breathing told him that I was terrified.
“Maybe this isn’t the job for you,” he started. “But, since we’ve bonded, there’s no turning back. You are my one and only.”
When I didn’t respond, the little cheekiness that he had left vanished. Although his cheeks and his skin were bright and glowing and he had color back to his eyes, he felt horrible. “Look, Bella. I don’t do this because I’m some sick freak. I do this for my survival. You don’t have to understand it, or even like it, but just know I don’t do this for fun. It sickens me that I have to live this way, but I can’t stop.”
He opened the door and proceeded to get out.
“Wait,” I said, quickly. The door had already closed, but he opened it and looked at me. “I understand, okay. It’s just too much all at once.” He looked at me like I was insane.
“I don’t think you really, truly understand,” he said. “If you do, you can’t be normal.” He shook his head.
“Maybe, I don’t. I’m trying to,” I said.
“Good enough for me,” he shrugged, and gave me a flashy grin.
“Do you want to come inside?” I asked. He paused, unsure.
“You didn’t tell the chief I was a vampire, did you?” he raised an eyebrow.
“No. He still thinks that you’re the nice boy from next door,” I said with a smile.
He looked at the truck in front of mine. “Looks like you have company.”
I got out of the truck, and walked over to the other side to get to him. “I don’t care.”
He smirked. “I have some cleaning up to take care of,” he said, backing away. I frowned, as he reminded me of our bloody night and that whole scene we created at that old woman’s estate. I shook it off and reached up on my tippy toes to give him a kiss on the lips. He turned his head away, stopping me. It shattered me a little. He stared off to the side. The sharp ping of rejection went straight through me.
“You better get going, then,” I said, hurting on the inside.
I watched Jasper walk, until I couldn’t see him anymore. Then, I took my keys and entered the house… just as Charlie was leaving. I bumped into him and fell down on the welcome mat.
“Woah, Bells,” he said, standing me up. “Careful, there. Where have you been? Jake was looking for you all night.”
“I got invited to a party. Where are you going in such a hurry?” I asked, trying to make my shaky voice sound perky.
“I just got a call. There’s been a murder at old Mrs. Fritzhammond’s place.”
I gave Charlie a blank stare, which he thought was weird.“Anyways, um. Jacob’s waiting for you, upstairs. We’ll talk about your lateness when I get back. I might be a while.”
“Take your time, Dad,” I said. And he was gone out the door. I went upstairs to Jacob, trying to block everything that happened from my memory. It was torture that I kept seeing that old woman’s face, it felt even worse now that I could put a name to that face.
I went into my room and shut the door. I was facing the door, trying to compose a normal expression. I could feel myself falling apart.
“Bella, hi,” Jacob said, nervously. “I think I know a way for us to deal with this whole imprinting thing.”
I didn’t look at him until I was sure my face looked okay and there were no tears. “We’ll just ignore it, pretend it never happened.”
I turned to look at him, finally. He suspected nothing was wrong with me. “But, isn’t that what you’ve been doing all along? That’s the reason you came clean to me, in the first place. You got tired of pretending.”
He plopped down on my bed. “I’m getting use to the idea that you’ll never see me the same way that I see you. I’m trying to accept it. I’ll be alone forever, without you.”
“You’re not going to be alone forever. Don’t even think like that.”
“It is what it is,” he said. “I’m fine with it, now. I just wanted you to know.” He got back up. I was blocking the door and I wasn’t sure why. He got frustrated, and balled and unballed his fist. “This really hurts, you know,” he snapped. “And it sucks. Why did it have to happen to me?”
I went and sat on my bed. I had no choice but to listen to him vent, while trying to keep my own turmoil in check. I thought if I kept looking up, I could keep the tears from flooding out. It didn’t work. Jacob moved to see my face. I turned away, so he couldn’t.
But, he knew I was crying anyway. “I’m sorry, Bella. I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
I shook my head. “It’s not you.”
“I’ll go home, now.”
“No, don’t go. I need you.”
He paused, and closed the door back. “I shouldn’t stay here. I shouldn’t even be here. My dad’s going to kill me for taking the Rabbit. We’re not even done working on it, yet.” He tried to sound casual, to lift up some of the heaviness in the room. I couldn’t bring myself to do the same. So, he came and sat next to me. “I know something’s up, so you may as well spill.”
I shook my head.
“If you can’t trust me, who can you trust?” he said, jokingly. I shook my head again. “You can’t hold it in forever.”
I turned to him and looked right into his eyes. “I can’t tell you,” I said, with enough conviction for him to understand I was serious. My mistake was letting him know something was wrong. Now, he won’t stop until he fixes it for me. He can’t know anything. He put his arm around my shoulder and I leaned my head into his neck.
“I guess, we’ve all got secrets,” he said. The way he said that made me think he had one too. I didn’t ask about his, for fear he would ask about mine. My shattered emotions pushed me up on him, and I felt the edge of his lips with my eyes closed. I hadn’t fully realized it, until I opened my eyes that we had kissed.
Jacob stared at me, eyes wide, mouth open. Probably, wondering what the hell was going through my mind. I had embarrassed myself.
“Don’t ask, because I don’t know,” I got up quickly.
“What was that for?!”
“I said don’t ask me!”
“I want to know why you just kissed me,” he said, standing up now.
“I wanted to make us feel better,” I shouted.
“That’s a horrible reason to kiss someone!” he shouted back.
“I’m sorry. It didn’t mean anything.”
“It’s good to know that kissing someone means so little to you,” he said.
“That’s not what I meant at all. Jake, we’re just friends.”
“This isn’t a game, Bella. What the hell is wrong with you? Maybe, we shouldn’t be around each other,” he said, going to the door.
“Jacob, stop” I begged.
“You don’t know what you want,” he accused. “I can’t be around you.” He left out the door. And I followed him down the stairs, trying to prevent him from leaving.
“We can talk about this.”
“Talking doesn’t work for us,” his said. He turned around, almost knocking me off my feet. “I don’t like being teased. Stay away from me, okay?”
Tears wallowed up in my eyes. “Okay!?”
“Okay!” I shouted. “You get out of here. I don’t want to see you, either!”
His eyes widened at me with surprise. He opened the door and left. I wanted to rip my hair out, but instead I ran to the kitchen and picked up Charlie’s coffee maker, and smashed it on the hardwood floor. It wasn’t enough to take away the pain. I just slipped to the floor and burst out crying. I had fallen asleep there. Charlie woke me up by shaking me. His angry face was a little scary because he never gets angry. He was holding up two pieces of the busted coffee maker. I groaned.

What a mess!

Oh my goodness, Bella is in such a mess!

Edward, Jake and Jasper. None of them being open with each other.

Can Jake get her our of Jasper clutches?

Chapter Seven Mr. Perfect
The next day at school, Angela and Eric wouldn’t even look at me, nor speak to me. Ben deliberately bumped into me in the hallway, making me drop my books.
“Sorry. My bad,” he apologized with laughter. At lunch I sat alone at a table. Angela and Eric were sitting with the art geeks. I was feeling so light-headed all the time. I think it’s because Jasper drank my blood. I planned on getting some vitamins after school for that. I picked over my potato salad. Tyler swooped in and sat in front of me.
“Hey,” he smiled.
“Hey,” I said, surprised. It was the first time today that anyone showed interest in me, so I was a little overly excited. I knew Tyler was on the baseball team and was friends with all the sporty people. I tried to act like I didn’t care that he was talking to me.
“How’s your lunch?” he asked, nicely.
“It’s a little runny.”
He pulled a note from the side pocket of his letterman jacket and slid it across the table.
“Ben wanted me to give you this,” he said. Any welcoming feelings I had at that moment had vanished. I slid the note back to Tyler.
“No thanks,” I said.
“He really likes you.”
“He hates me.”
Tyler laughed. “He’s really immature, sometimes. That’s just his way of expressing that he likes you.” He slid the note back to me.
“What about Lauren?”
“Ben has an image to uphold. He doesn’t actually like her. She’s a witch. Everyone secretly despises her.”
I thought about it for a long moment. I held onto the note. Tyler watched me. “Are you going to read it?”
“Yes,” I said. He was still here, curiously waiting for me to open it. “Did you already read it?”
“No,” he said, insulted. “What does it say?”
I opened it and read it.
Bella,
Meet me outside, behind the school, when the last bell rings,
Ben
I read it out loud so curious Tyler could know what it said.
“Sounds like a date,” he said.
“Yeah right.” I rolled my eyes. I was going to meet him, to tell him to leave me alone. After the last bell, I went outside and went behind the school. I didn’t see anyone, until Ben came from behind a pile of colorful trash from the arts & crafts class.
“Bella, I didn’t think you’d show,” he said.
“I’m here. What do you want? I think you have a lot of nerve treating me the way you do. You and your friends only mess with me.”
“You’re taking it the wrong way. I like you, Bella. You’re so pretty and hot, and it makes Lauren jealous. If I were nice to you, she’d kill me. She’s afraid of being replaced.”
“Do you have a point?” I asked.
“I want to go out with you. You like me, don’t you, despite how I’ve been acting.”
I did have a little mushy spot in my heart for Ben, left over from the first time I saw him. Ever since, that spot has been getting smaller and smaller. But, a piece was still there.
“Yes,” I said, honestly.
He smiled, surprised and victorious. He let out a huge sigh. “There’s just one thing.”
Now I was sighing. “What is it, Ben?”
“We have to keep it a secret. Lauren would be mad. No one can know.”
“Okay,” I agreed. I -kind of- wanted Lauren to find out. Anything to tick her off couldn’t be a bad thing.
“Cool. I’ll pick you up at 8.” He started to walk away.
“Wait. Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise,” he winked.
For some reason, that didn’t make me all giddy with anticipation. When I got home, I remembered I was suppose to get vitamins from the store. I went through Charlie’s medicine cabinet, instead, looking for B-12 vitamins, or anything with B-12 in them. I felt drained of all energy. I got a good look at myself in the mirror, and I was looking paler than usual. It shocked me how much pill medicine Charlie had. I read the prescriptions as I went through each. He had meds for headaches, backaches, and all sort of pain killers. It made me worry that something might be wrong with him.
I looked in the bottom cabinet in his bathroom and found a goldmine of medications. I looked through each one, and something fell out of the bag when I tilted it. I reached down and picked it up. It was some sort of syringe. I stared at it, trying to figure out its purpose.
I heard the sound of Charlie’s boots. I rushed to put everything back where I found it. I took some of his pain killers and a bottle of unlabeled vitamins and raced to my bathroom to hide them there. When he found me, I was innocently sitting at the foot of my bed.
“Hey, Bella. Did you have a good day?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said.
“That’s great. I’m going fishing with Billy, in a few. You’ll be okay here, by yourself?”
“Always, Dad.”
When I heard the door close downstairs, I knew Charlie was gone. I went to my bathroom. I was out of breath for some reason. I swallowed four of his vitamins and then I drank water from the sink to wash them down.
For my night with Ben, I decided to wear a casual outfit, something I’d wear to school. How could I enjoy myself with Ben when all I could think about was how I hurt Jacob.
I had about 4 hours until my date. I decided to use the between time to go to LaPush and try to talk to Jacob. When I arrived, it was raining. I got soaked.
I knocked on the door. When no one answered, I banged on it. Rachel came to the door and opened it.
“Rachel,” I said.
“Hi, Bella.”
“I need to speak to Jake.”
“He doesn’t want to talk to you,” she said. She acted like she was being told what to say.
“Can I come in? I’m getting soaked out here.”
“Sure.” She opened the door. I went inside and took off my wet jacket.
“Did Paul come back?”
“Yes, he came back.”
“And Leah and Sam?”
“They all came back.”
“Where did they go?”
“They took a road trip.” I knew she was lying because they went missing at different times.
“So, how have things been down here?”
“Hectic,” she sighed. “It feels like a dark cloud is hovering over the reservation.”
I didn’t notice anything different, so I didn’t know what she was referring to. “At least everyone is safe, right?”
“Right,” she hesitated.
“Rachel, is something wrong. You’re acting strange.”
“No.” She let out a nervous giggle.
“Have you spoken to Leah?”
She fell silent for a moment.
“Leah is not speaking to anyone at the moment,” Rachel said. “Sam broke up with her, and got with her cousin Emily.”
My jaw dropped. “I thought they were in love.”
“Everyone thought that. I guess their love wasn’t as strong as we thought,” she said. We had a lot of silent moments, moments that I felt she wanted to tell me something, but was holding back.
“Is Jake in his room?” I asked, in a low voice. She nodded. I knew he had been listening in, so I didn’t ask her if I could go to the back of the house. I just went, in case he was planning to jump out his window when he knew I was coming. I burst through his door.
“Jacob.” He was behind it. I knew he was listening. He came out.
“I told you not to come here,” he said, a bit of anger in his voice. I stared at him in disbelief. His long beautiful dark hair was gone.
“What the hell did you do to yourself?” I demanded. “You cut your hair off? Billy’s going to kill you.”
“It’s just hair,” he said. “And Billy couldn’t care less.”
I examined him more. He looked buffer, more than he did last night.
“Jake, are you on steroids?” I asked, with horror. He glared at me.
“I would never take drugs!”
“You’re on something. Look at your neck. Look at your arms!”
“It’s called a growth spert, genius!” he said.
“Everytime I see you, you’re a little bit different than before. What’s going on?”
“I’m not even talking to you, so get the hell out!” he pointed to the door. His face softened when he saw my hurt expression. “I warned you and you didn’t listen. I hope you can make it home safely.”
“You won’t even tell me what’s going on. You’re keeping me in the dark, me, your best friend, Jake.”
He chuckled to himself. “We can’t be friends. You know that, and yet you won’t leave me alone, like I ask.”
“I can’t leave you alone,” I said. “I feel like you need me. You’re the one pulling me to you, Jake. It’s you, not me.”
“So, it’s my fault that you keep interfering with my life, even when I tell you to back off? That makes… zero sense,” he said.
“I don’t know any other way to explain it,” I said.
“Maybe, you should be honest and tell me how you really feel. What’s the real reason you won’t go away. What’s the real reason you kissed me, last night?”
“I don’t need this from you,” I shook my head and turned to the door.
“All you have to do is admit it.”
“There’s nothing to confess,” I said.
“Do you believe the words that are coming out of your own mouth?”
“Goodbye, Jake,” I forced myself to say.
“Good old Bella, always running away when things get too tough for her. Just like last summer, you couldn’t wait to get away from me. You couldn’t get Rene to drive fast enough.”
“That’s not true!” I hollered.
“You hated what we did, and you hated me for it. You still do.”
“We didn’t do anything wrong.”
“You act like we killed somebody!”
I froze up, getting back memories of Mrs. Fritzhammond, that I tried to forget. “We made love, Jake, and it was beautiful. But, it shouldn’t have happened. We got into Harry Clearwater’s alcohol cabinet and we got drunk. We were drunk! We were just two dumb kids trying to be cool, showing off for each other, and it went too far. I’m trying to keep our friendship together and you insist on tearing it apart!”
“Keep on telling yourself that. Honestly, we both ruined what we had. What’s done is done, so stop trying to fix it,” he said. “It’s over.”
“This imprinting thing… you’re just confused.”
“Don’t tell me how I feel because you don’t know. And stop calling it a ‘thing’. I was in love with you before we had sex. Sex didn’t intensify my feelings about you at all or change how I felt about you. It’s just something that happened and you’ve been using it as an excuse to hide how you really feel ever since.”
I just stared at him, speechless. “Yes. Bella, you’re that transparent.”
“I have to go. I have a date at 8pm,” I said, nonchalantly. He looked defeated.
“By all means, don’t let me hold you up,” he said, sarcastically. I turned and left, slamming the door behind me.
Was there truth to what he said? What Jake had taken as rejection, really wasn’t. I just wasn’t ready for that kind of love and adoration. It scared the hell out of me. I wanted to have a life of my own. That’s what I wanted, so why did I keep doing these things? Maybe, I’m the one who’s confused.
I passed Rachel and ran out the door. I got in the truck and drove off. There was a figure walking in the rain. It was Seth. I stopped and got out.
“Seth, are you okay. What are you doing out here all alone? Do you want a ride?”
“My sister, she joined the cult.”
“What?”
“She’s one of them, now.”
“One of whom? What are you talking about Seth?”
“Leah’s a skin walker, with Paul and Sam. I saw them with my own eyes. They were naked together in the woods. I wasn’t supposed to be there, but I followed her. Everyone keeps telling me I’m crazy, but I saw them. I did! You believe me, Bella?”
He was so despaired and innocent. I didn’t know what to think or believe. “I believe you, Seth,” I said. I reached my arms out to comfort him, and he walked in to me. “I believe you think you saw something, but you really didn’t.”
He pulled out of my arms. “I knew it. You’re just like everyone else. You don’t believe me. The only person who cares is Jake! We’re going to hunt them down and prove you all wrong.” He ran off, in the direction of Billy’s house.
Jacob didn’t believe in skin walkers did he? Humoring Seth in that way seemed cruel. I got back in my truck and drove home. I waited outside the house for Ben. It was well over 8pm. Charlie came back.
“Hey, kiddo, what are you doing outside?”
“Just waiting,” I said, embarrassed that I had been stood up. I felt stupid and started to go inside when a white corvette pulled up to the sidewalk. It was Ben. I went up to the impressive car.
“Hey, gorgeous,” he said, moving his backpack from the passenger seat. “Get in.”
I exhaled and got into the comfy little car.
“You said something about a surprise?” I asked, timidly, as he drove.
“Oh yeah. You’re going to love it.”
It was a drive- thru movie, something I never experienced before.
“I didn’t know these things still existed,” I said. Ben had the fanciest looking car on the lot. A waiter came by with menus and we ordered burgers, fries, and a salad. We didn’t say much, and when we did speak, he did most of the talking, asking me questions about Arizona. I was too nervous and afraid of saying something stupid. We shared a soda and some popcorn. After the movie, Ben took me home. He wanted to kiss me. Since, he had been so nice, I let him.
“We should hang out, again,” he said.
“We should,” I said. Charlie wasn’t home yet, and I had an idea. “Why don’t you come in?”
“Sure.”
It felt nice to hang out with a guy who didn’t have expectations of me. Ben just seemed to go with the flow. We didn’t fight or argue. We just had a nice, normal time. “Nice house, Chief.”
“Thanks,” I said. “You’re not still hungry, are you?”
Charlie must be having a break , somewhere because his uniform and equipment were in the kitchen.
“I’m good,” he said. We went upstairs to my room. Before I knew it, we were making out on my bed. I slid the jacket off his shoulders and tossed it. He grabbed my belt, anxiously trying to get it off and kiss me at the same time. His hands went under my shirt, where he caressed my breasts, then laid me down. He stopped.
“Can I use your bathroom?” he asked. I nodded, biting my lip. While he was in there, I took his jacket off the floor and was going to hang it up. Something fell out of the right pocket. I picked it up. It was a condom. Blood rushed from my face. Who brings a condom on the first date? He came out of the bathroom. When he saw what was in my hand, he froze and blushed.
“You went in my jacket?” was all that he said.
“This is a condom.”
“I know what it is.” He snatched it from me.
“Why do you have it?”
“I thought we could,” he shrugged. Then, he paused. “Obviously, I thought we could sleep together.” He had backed me up against the door, and propped his arm up against it.
“Are you nuts? We barely know each other. I just met you this Monday.”
I felt his knee parting my legs. I pushed him away. He stood off like I insulted him in some way. I didn’t like the absent look that had glazed over his blue eyes. He came at me, pinning me to the door. “I know you want me. Don’t fight it.” He kissed my lips, trying to hold me in place by restraining my arms. It was a sloppy kiss because I kept moving my head side to side, trying to keep it from happening. Since my legs were free, I jabbed him hard in the nuts, with my knee. He screamed and fell over.
I tried to open the door and escape, not realizing he had locked it. That’s when he grabbed my waist, pulling me back. I wiggled free, and punched him hard in the neck. Then, I spun around and kicked him in the face. His head jerked backwards and he fell over.
“Eric was right,” I said, out of breath. “You’re not very bright. My dad’s a cop, you moron. What were you thinking?”
He got up and licked at his busted lip. He pointed his finger at me and shook it. “You’re going to regret this. I’ll make sure of it,” he said. “I’ll make sure you’re the most hated chick at our school. You’ll be begging to go back to Pheonix.”
“I can’t believe I let you put your grubby hands on me,” I said. He glared at me and then he left. We were back to being enemies. I sat in my room for the remainder of the night, waiting for Jacob to call, even as I knew he wouldn’t. I heard Charlie come in. Soon he was at my door, asking me about his gun.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know where it is, Dad,” I said. “Are you sure you didn’t take it with you?”
“Bella, I left all my things on the kitchen table and then I went out to the diner to get us dinner. I didn’t take anything with me, except my wallet.”
I gulped.
“Bella, if you have it-“
I stopped him, outraged. “Why would I take your gun?”
“I could arrest you for theft, but since you’re my daughter-“
“Dad, I didn’t touch your gun. Maybe, you moved it and forgot where you put it.”
He sighed and looked around himself. I sat back in my chair and pouted as he searched my room for his gun.
“It’s not in here,” he said, when he was finished.
“You may also want to check the bathroom. Why don’t you go ahead and frisk me while you’re at it,” I said, cynically.
“This is serious, Bella,” he said, his voice matching his upset and nervous mood. He did check the bathroom. I remembered I had taken some meds from him and hid them in there. Then, I felt stupid for being sassy. He came out, empty handed, and I sighed from relief.
“You won’t get in trouble for not having it on duty, will you?” I said, feeling sorry for him. “We’ll find it.”
“It’s got to be in this house somewhere. Oh by the way, your dinner is on the table in a Cora’s Place bag.”
After I ate, I helped look for the missing gun. We searched every inch of the house. The next day at school, I confronted Ben by his locker.
“Where is it?” I asked, in a whisper. He turned to me. He had a knot on his forehead and bruised, purple lips. I had to contain my laughter.
“Where’s what?”
“My father’s gun, I know you took it,” I said.
“Why would I do something stupid like that?”
“Maybe for the same reason you tried to force yourself on me, last night,” I whispered. “With one phone call, I could have you locked up.”
He slammed his locker. “Then, why haven’t you done it, yet? What are you waiting for?”
I didn’t answer.
“That’s what I thought,” he said. “Maybe, if you’d wash your stinky clothes more often, you’d find it.”
I looked at him, dumbfounded. “You are such an idiot.”
“There you go again with the name calling. Better watch yourself, or you won’t even have me to talk to,” he said. I bit down hard on my tongue.
In Drama, Lauren and Jessica kept stealing glances at me, and then laughing to each other. In the hallway after lunch, I bumped into an angry Angela.
“I heard you went out with Mr. Perfect last night. Is it true?” she asked.
“Mr. Who?”
“Ben,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“We went out,” I said.
Her jaw dropped and she wasn’t happy for me. “Are you stupid or something? After I warned you about that slime ball? All he wants is sex. He gets his kicks from causing other people pain.”
“I didn’t give it to him. I’m not going to let him mess me up, like he did you. Now who is stupid, Angie?”
“Still you, and that’s not what I heard.” She twitched.
“Maybe, you should stop listening to rumors, then.”
“You’re going to end up with nobody at this school, if you keep making dumb choices,” she said.
“You don’t care about me,” I said. “You’re so bipolar.”
I walked away from her, as I was making myself late by talking to her.
“Keep on fooling around with that creep. And don’t call me ‘Angie’!” She shouted at me from down the hall.
By the end of the day, I didn’t know who my real friends were. I felt alone, and that feeling made me want to forgive Ben so I could hang out with him. I wanted to get down on my knees and cry and beg for forgiveness from Angela so she would hang out with me. Both ideas made me feel foolish and cheap. I went out to my car. I saw three girls walking towards me in the rearview mirror. I turned around.
It was Lauren, Jessica, and some girl with black hair and blue eyes.
“Hey,” Lauren said, uncaringly. I just looked at her. “Oh. This is my friend Ashley. She finally decided to come back to school.”
“Hey, you’re the new girl,” Ashley said.
“Bella,” I said.
“So,” Jessica broke in, as it was getting awkward. “How was your date with Ben?”
My face turned white, and they laughed.
“Don’t worry,” Lauren said, touching my shoulder. “I totally don’t mind lending my boyfriend to girls in need.”
I looked at her, confused. “You didn’t think he was serious, did you? It was just for fun,” Jessica said.
They were all laughing now, but I wasn’t. “Gotcha!” Lauren said.
“You were-like- puddy in his hands,” Jessica said.
“You guys are really sick in the head,” I muttered.
“Well, call it what you want. We gotta find some way to entertain ourselves in this godforsaken town,” Lauren said. “Thanks for being our town jester, Bella.”
“I think it’s really weird that your boyfriend goes out with other girls just to have a laugh, and you’re in on it. How insecure do you have to be to think that’s okay or even funny?” I said. “Yeah, you hurt my feelings, but I think you’re hurting a lot more than I am. He’s made a game out of being unfaithful to you. That’s got to hurt.”
The laughter faded, and I had Lauren’s full attention. And she didn’t like it. Ashley let a laugh slip out and Lauren reached back and shushed her.
“It’s not like we’re married or anything,” she shrugged. “Goodbye, ‘beautiful’ swan,” she said, sarcastically, and laughed along with her friends as they walked away.

Oh and where is Jasper when she needed him?

I'm glad Bella pointed out to Jessica that she was the one with problems with Ben.

Those kids are really mean!

Chapter Eight Vampire Kisses
I got home from school and Charlie was sitting down in a chair at the kitchen table. I walked in and saw the meds that I took, on the table. I knew I was in trouble.
“Bella, we need to have a serious talk,”he started.
“Dad, I can explain. See. I wasn’t feeling well and- Rene always lets me use her meds when I feel sick.”
“You took these things without asking. I could have taken you to the hospital if you were sick.”
“I’m really sorry, Dad. Um. Did you find your gun?”
He huffed. “I’m still searching for it. Luckily, no one has noticed that I don’t have, yet” he said. There was a drawn out silence that didn’t feel natural. “Bella, if you took it-“
“I didn’t take your gun!” I insisted, cutting him off. He didn’t believe me. I could see it in his eyes, his trust in me was broken. If I could grab Ben and force him to confess in front of Charlie, I would. Cleaning up around the house usually calmed my nerves when I was upset about something, so that’s what I did. I grabbed some of Charlie’s clothes along with my own and dumped them in the washing machine and turned it on. Then, I swept and mopped the kitchen floor.
In Arizona, our house was always a mess because Rene wasn’t too keen on cleanliness, or maybe she just didn’t know how. So, I did all of the cleaning and the cooking for her.
After I did the dishes, I went and sat on the couch, annoyed that I was still angry and there was nothing left to clean, unless I wanted to get on the floor with a tooth brush.
A strange clanking sound from the laundry room was really irking my nerves. I went to go see where it was coming from. It was coming from the rocky washing machine. I stopped the spin and removed many items of clothing. I reached my hand down feeling around in the soapy water and clothes. My hand touched something hard, that wasn’t supposed to be in there, and I immediately knew what it was. I pulled out Charlie’s gun, all soapy from the wash. Water leaked out of the barrel. I dried it off as much as I could. I took the gun to Charlie, who was in his room resting up for work.
“’Dad, I found your gun.” That woke him up. “You’ll never guess where.”
“Just tell me. I’m not in the mood for guesswork.”
“It was in the washing machine,” I said.
“How the heck did it get in there?” He got the gun from me and put it in a holster on the belt where it belonged. “It doesn’t matter. The important thing is we found it.”
“You don’t still think I took it, do you?” I asked because he gave me a strange look.
“I don’t know, Bella. Did you take it?”
I held my tongue. Then, said, “You’re right. The important thing is we found it.” I went downstairs. It was just Ben trying to create problems between me and Charlie. He’s like an evil stepchild. I went to my room and lie down.
My window flew open, suddenly. The wind came in blowing my hair all over my face. I jumped off the bed, freaked out. A leaf smacked me in the eye. I went to the window and tried to close it. And a face popped up. I screamed and stood back.
I calmed down when I realized it was just Jasper. I went back to the window and looked out. He was floating in midair.
“You scared the crap out of me,” I complained.
“That was the idea,” he said. “You have to invite me in.”
“I’d rather not. Charlie is trying to sleep,” I said.
“Then, why don’t you come out here.”
“I was getting to that.”
He took my hand and I crawled out of the window, and onto his back.
“I didn’t know you could fly,” I said.
“Being a vampire has its perks. Hang on and try not to fall. There’s no guarantee I’ll be able to catch you.”
That made me nervous, but I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck. He ascended higher into the sky. We actually went up into the clouds, where it was so cold, that I started shaking and my teeth were chattering.
“Hey, Bella, don’t look down,” he said. I looked down anyway, and I shrieked at how high we were. I couldn’t even make out any particular places, it was all so far down.
“Do you ever go into space?” I asked.
“Sometimes,” he said, proudly.
“Is heaven up there?”
“If it is, it’s completely hidden from me.”
“You actually tried to look for it?”
“Out of curiosity, I did. There’s nothing up there, but planets and stars that never freaking end.”
“No aliens?” I asked, playfully.
“Nada.”
Unexpectedly, he dropped. We were entwined together, freefalling, without a parachute. On the long, fast way down, all I could hear was the loud whistling of the wind. Suddenly, I plopped down on some grass, falling on my butt. Jasper landed, gently on his feet, like a cat, a few feet away from me.
“Are you trying to kill me?” I screamed, and my butt hurt.
“If that were my intention, you would have been dead a long time ago,” he responded, lightly. “This is me being good.”
“Whatever, Peter Pan.”
Looking around, we were in front of Carlisle’s house, on the front lawn. “Must be nice, never needing a vehicle,” I said. He helped me up and we went to the door. We walked right in to music playing. It was the piano. Jasper sighed, deeply.
“Oh, Edward! You and your sorrowful songs,” Jasper jeered. He took my hand and twirled me around. “Play something that makes me want to dance, for once!”
He put his other hand on my hip, and we whirled around in big circles in the square foyer, on a marble floor. As we twirled, I kept thinking about how great it must be to live forever and be immortal, and to fly and go anywhere you feel like going. I wasn’t actually dancing on my own, I was standing on his feet, until it was time to twirl me. We danced around furniture and tall pillars topped with red bouquets.
The place was cleaner than my last visit, a lot cleaner. The furniture and the paintings reminded me of another time period, where people dressed in petticoats and top hats, and little girls always wore long, layered, frilly dresses, even in summer. It still had that eerie feeling, though. I felt like I was in a different world. The music never stopped. It got more intense, and we danced faster, keeping up with the lifted tempo.
“That’s it, Edward. Put your back into it. Make me feel it!” Jasper cried, as we glided and spun. Although intense, Edward’s song was sad and it gave me a depressed feeling. My energy was drained and I dropped to the floor. Jasper was dancing alone for a second, until he saw I wasn’t there in his arms.
“Too much?” he asked.
“No. I’m fine,” I said, getting off the floor. I knew something was wrong with me, but I didn’t want to make anyone worry about it. I followed him up the spiral staircase, to where the music was coming from. Jasper approached Edward from behind and smashed his palms down on the keys, creating a long, harsh, unpleasant tune. I had to cover my ears. Edward winced at the uncomfortable noise. He pushed Jasper back and started playing again.
“I’ll leave it to the professional,” Jasper said. He took a glass filled with a red liquid from the desk, and leaned on Edward’s bed. “You could have been the next Bach.”
“Edward, you play beautifully,” I complimented.
He stopped suddenly, and turned around to see me. He looked bemused. “Sorry. I didn’t know you were here. I could only hear Jasper’s bratty voice and his annoying thoughts.”
“Where’s Daddy?” Jasper asked.
“He’s resting. Don’t go bothering him,” Edward said.
“I think you should quit classical. No one listens to that, anymore. Maybe, that’s why you’re still not famous. You should move on to heavy metal. You’ve got the messy hair for it.”
“Shh!” Edward said, suddenly. Jasper zipped his lips, alarmed. He was listening for something. I tried to listen, too. Edward chuckled.
“What is it?” Jasper asked.
“I can’t hear her,” he said.
“You can’t?” Jasper’s eyes got big. Edward shook his head, and a funny smile was on his face. “At all?”
“Can’t hear what?” I broke in, feeling left out and confused.
“You,” Edward said, looking right at me.
“Bhahahahaha!” Jasper burst out laughing, scaring me.
“Can you hear me, now?” I raised my voice. Jasper broke into a fit of laughter, for some reason. I felt like they were making fun of me. Edward cracked a smile, and started to laugh along with him. I frowned.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Jasper said, trying to calm himself down. “You can’t hear her?”
“Nope,” Edward said, as if it was some victorious thing to not be able to hear.
“Can somebody let me in on what’s going on?” I asked.
“Edward is a mind reader,” Jasper said.
“I’m not a mind reader. I don’t go around deliberately reading through people’s minds. I can hear people’s thoughts. I can’t make it stop, I can’t shut them out, and I can’t lower the volume when it gets too loud. It’s a curse. Last time you were here, it was so hectic with Carlisle’s party, I was hearing so many at a time, that I didn’t notice when I couldn’t hear someone.”
“You’re not cursed. What you have is a blessing. If I could read minds, don’t you know how much crap I would get away with? Don’t you know how much fun I’d be having? We would make a great team,” Jasper said.
“Which is a good thing you can’t,” Edward said. I nodded, agreeing. The color of his eyes blackened right in front of me. I couldn’t look away. It was like magic. Edward noticed me staring and he became uncomfortable. “I have to feed.” He got up from the bench.
“Why go out, when you have a perfectly good, healthy human right here,” Jasper said, slyly. I wanted to smack him for even suggesting that. I didn’t come here to be dinner. “She is my familiar, but I give you my permission… just this once.”
Edward paused. He was actually thinking about it. I started to protest, when suddenly, I felt light and airy. A giggle popped out of me and I slammed my hand over my mouth, confused. I giggled more, but I wasn’t being tickled and nobody made any jokes that were funny. Edward’s eyes lit up.
“You haven’t told her what your power is, have you,” Edward said.
“It’s more fun when they don’t know what’s happening to them,” Jasper said.
“You sick bastard,” Edward smirked.
Jasper stared at me, and I felt light headed again and whoozy. I almost fell, but I caught myself. Then, I started giggling again, uncontrollably this time. I laughed so much that I held my stomach because it hurt.
“Jasper, cut it out. I don’t want to watch this anymore,” Edward said, bored. Jasper cut his glare to Edward and snickered. I tried to catch my breath and get back settled. “Jasper can alter your mood. He can even make you go into fits of laughter or rage for no reason you know about. You may think you’re going crazy, when it’s just Jasper having his way with you.”
“You were doing that to me?” I asked. “I have been feeling sick ever since I met you!”
“I’m sorry! I couldn’t resist,” Jasper said. “It was just so easy.” He gave me an innocently look, but I rolled my eyes at him. He growled at me, playfully.
“You sound like a lion cub,” I said.
Jasper looked at Edward. “I thought you were hungry. You look hungry.”
“I would feel guilty. I promised Carlisle that I’d try his way for a while.”
“Oh, you’re turning into such a bore,” Jasper complained.
Edward looked at me to explain. “Carlisle doesn’t drink human blood. He drinks the blood of animals. He’s trying to wane us off of human blood. Some of us-“ He glanced at Jasper. “-don’t like this... new way of doing things.”
“We all have our preferences,” Jasper said. “I’ll stick to sucking the life out of humans, thank you. Drinking animal blood feels a little degrading to me.”
“Are you saying Carlisle doesn’t have self respect?” Edward said.
“He is the most lost. He has forgotten his nature,” Jasper said. “I love Carlisle, but I don’t like his methods. Neither do Alice or Rosalie. Where are they now? Somewhere sucking the blood out of two poor unsuspecting saps, draining them of their life substance, and it fills up my dead heart with such joy and content.”
“Jasper, you’re really weirding me out right now,” I said.
“I didn’t choose this life, it chose me,” he said. “I find no point in sitting around being gloom about it. You’re not a real vampire.” He looked at Edward.
“Fine. Give her to me,” Edward said.
“What? What’s going on?” I asked, in a panicky voice.
“He’s challenging me,” Edward said.
“To do what?” I said, stupidly. The next thing I knew, I felt Edward’s lips caressing my neck. And I wasn’t standing where I was before, I was on his bed. He burst open his shirt, revealing eight rock hard abs on a sculpted chest. Why are all the guys, in my life so freakishly fit, not that I’m complaining, but damn Edward! Jasper sat back in the chair and watched. He seemed to be enjoying his view a little too much.
“Oi!” I wailed, when his fangs sank into my neck, just above the collarbone. It was a weird, embarrassing noise. He pressed his hand into my back, bringing our bodies closer together. My life was being drained, but I didn’t feel like I was dying. I felt high. He gulped, continually, as if he were drinking from the fountain of youth, which I was, in a way. He pulled out and sank into me on the other side, with a much harder bite. I screamed out, as that one really hurt. Then, I felt another pair of lips on my body. It was Jasper. He had gotten behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. He pulled me into his lap, and dipped his fangs into the side of my neck.
My eyes rolled to the back of my head as they both gave me a strange ecstasy. I pulled Edward’s head up to mine and kissed his lips, greedily. I didn’t care if they killed me in that moment. At least I would die happy.

Wow things are getting so strange for her right now.She has two very different parts to her life, one fairly normal and human and then one with Jasper that is anything but nomal.

I hope she lives.

I like the phrase "He gulped, continually, as if he were drinking from the fountain of youth"

Looking forward to the next update.

Best wishes

Chris

My mistake I've been thinking that would be three different parts to her life if you include the one with the wolves.

It must be very hard for Bella to pull that together in her mind, I can see why she would want to jump to only one life. May be the with 'Bad Boys Cullen'.

She really got caught up in the moment!

great update!  Things are really starting to get interesting!  can't wait to read your next udpate!

wow Bella has Eddie and Jazz wrapped around her finger.
