Preface

They were running as fast as their legs would carry them. Something was chasing them, something I couldn't see.

They turned a corner and I chased after them, tears streamed out of my deep brown eyes when I rounded the corner to find their dead bodies lying in the street.

Chapter 1: The Van Nells

I woke screaming. Tears ran down face leaving a wet trail behind them. I got up and walked into my bathroom. Leaning over the sink, I splashed my face with cold water.

I looked different now. My parent’s death -no murder- had taken a great toll on me and if it weren't for my curly, silky brown hair and olive complexion I would resemble a zombie.

I remember that night from three days ago very well..............

Mum and dad had taken me for a walk after dark. It had been a still night, but half way through our walk the winds picked up like a hurricane. Mum and dad had looked terrified. They took me to a video store and told me to wait there till they came back for me, they didn't. I waited, and waited, and waited…but they didn’t come.

I had become very worried, so I went looking for them. I heard screaming – my mother screaming – and ran towards the sound. I sprinted around the corner to find my parent’s pale figures lying lifeless in the middle of the road.

I came back to the present and found that I was crying again. It's amazing how much could change in three days, especially since just two days before they had died; we'd celebrated my seventeenth birthday like any normal family. I used to be loved and cared for, but now I was completely alone.

Staying in a hotel for three nights was boring and I was beginning to wonder if I should get my own place.

I walked to the bed and curled up under the covers.

"Knock, knock," said a voice from outside my room. "It's Mrs. Brooker, Ellesmere, let me in?" I groaned and got up to open the door.

"Hello." I mumbled. I didn't invite Mrs. Brooker in, but she pranced inside anyways.

"Ellesmere, we need to talk," she said and took a seat on the small sofa as she adjusted her glasses.

"Ella." I corrected her. I hate it when people call me Ellesmere, it was only ok when my parents called me that and Mrs. Brooker was nowhere near as close as my parents were.

"Ella," she overemphasized my name. "Come sit with me." She patted the spot next to her and I sat down. She smiled and I could see the red lipstick she'd gotten on her teeth.

"I've found you a family." I was going to interrupt saying I could look after myself, but Mrs. Brooker put her hand up to stop me. "There are six in the family. They live in Romania and sound like a very lovely bunch."

"No way! That's much too far from Liverpool," I protested.

"It's final. Your parent’s left me in charge of your affairs and I'm sending you to Romania to live with these people. End of story."

I couldn't argue. She was right and she knew it. Mrs. Brooker smiled at me when I finally reached defeat with a heavy sigh.

"Your plane leaves first thing tomorrow morning. You will be packed and ready to go. I am taking you to the airport myself so be ready nice and early. Good-bye for now, I have things to do," without another word, Mrs. Brooker got up and left the room.

I grabbed my suitcase from under my bed then started throwing random things inside.

The plane landed roughly on the ground. It rolled then finally came to a stop. I grabbed my bags, smiled at the old lady I'd been sitting next to and got off the plane into the cold air of Brazov. I groaned. I was moving from the lovely streets of England to the open wilderness of Romania. I was also unhappy about the fact that I had to leave my motorbike in England. Dad and I used to ride together for a fun pass-time.

There was a taxi waiting for me outside the airport. The driver helped me with my things then we drove away down the winding and unfamiliar road of Brazov.

"Where to miss?" asked the driver politely.

"13 Bloody Court," I answered and realized just how freaky the street name sounded.

"Good luck Miss. Some say that castles haunted," he shivered in fright as he spoke.

"Castle? Haunted?" I thought I was going to live with a lovely, happy family. I was feeling puzzled.

"Yeah. 13 Bloody Court is a castle. People say it’s full of ghosts and dark magic. I met the owners once, most definitely not happy looking people, pale with big red eyes. Gives me the hebegebees." He continued. He was serious; I could tell from his expression that he wasn't messing with me.

"Oh," I replied. Am I really going to live in a castle? Is it haunted? Question flew through my head.

It was snowing when the taxi pulled onto the curb in front of the iron gates. It was well and truly a castle, black as the midnight sky and it looked thousands of years old. It was like a graveyard. Everything was rotten or withering away. The trees all bare, the grass was brown and dead. I gulped.

The taxi driver helped me unload my bags then he got back in the car and smiled through the open window.

"Good luck Miss," I watched as he drove back down the winding road.

I tried to open the gate but it was locked. I noticed a black box on the gate and pressed the red button.

"Hello?" said a voice, like ice, through the speakers.

"I'm Ellesmere Highburg," I answered.

"Ellesmere hello! Come in! Come in!" said the voice with much more enthusiasm. The gates opened with a high pitched creak and I made my way up the cobblestone path to the castle. My palms were sweating and I felt like vomiting from my nerves. I finally reached the door, took a deep breath and gave three gentle knocks. The door flew open and a man stepped into my view. He had black silky hair past his shoulders, pale white skin and eyes of blood red. He was beautiful, scary, but beautiful.

"Hello, I’m Benjamin Van Nell," he said, probably amused by my expression.

"Hello," I squeaked out, my voice shaking.

"Come in," he said while gesturing to come inside.

Benjamin's voice was like velvet, yet it wasn't a soft velvet; more an old and poison covered velvet. I stepped inside into what looked like a 15th century ballroom. It was dark so all I could see was a chandelier hanging from the ceiling and a piano near the far wall. Everything in the room was covered in dust and cobwebs.

"I will show you to your room" Benjamin startled me because first he was next to the door and then he was right next to me, close enough for me to feel his ice cold breath put goosebumps along my neck.

He glided past me and up a flight of stairs. I hesitated for a second then followed. We walked past hundreds of doors, most bolted shut. Paintings hung from the walls containing portraits of ancient people.

Dust clung to my clothes and with every step I took on the dirty floor; I made clouds of dust fly into the air leaving a slight path behind me.

"Here you are," Benjamin said opening the door marked 'guest'. I walked inside a fairly large room. It was dark and dust covered everything. All I could see in the darkness was a huge wooden bed, a fireplace and an old dresser with a stool and mirror.

"I will come and bring you food in the morning and then you will meet the rest of the family," he said as he gave me a quick smile.

"Ok, Thanks," I said and he left without another sound closing the door behind himself.

My mind was buzzing. This reminded me of a lot of horror films I had seen starring vampires and werewolves. No I wouldn't let myself believe in such foolish things. Vampires do not exist and neither do werewolves, ghosts, zombies or witches.

It was getting cold so I went to the fireplace and kneeled in front of it. There was wood inside so I clicked my fingers over it. A small flame appeared so I blew it across the fire until it lit. Within seconds the fire was warm and blazing. Ever since I was born I have been able to control the elements fire, water, earth and air. The only people I told were my parents and they were gone so it didn't matter anymore. I'd kept it a secret because I was scared to be locked up and called a freak.

I was warm now so I went to my bag and put on my pajamas. The bed had black satin sheets with matching pillows and blankets. I lay down and curled into a ball wondering what the next day would bring. It didn't take long to fall asleep; I was so tired and before I knew it someone was knocking at my door.

"It’s Benjamin. Are you awake? Let me in," he asked. I got up and opened the door. Benjamin was still dressed in all black, the contrasts making him look even paler then he was.

"May I come in?" he asked formally.

"Yeah sure," I stepped aside so he could enter. He placed a tray containing toast and porridge on my bedside table then went and sat in one of the two chairs I hadn’t noticed up until now.

"Do you like your room?" he asked me.

"Yeah, it’s great," I mumbled. I didn’t really like the room. It reminded me of a murder scene and this house – or castle – didn’t make me feel any better.

"Good now sit. We have to talk about some things." Benjamin looked like the kind of person you obeyed no matter what, so I sat in the chair across from him. "Ok firsts things first; these are the rules Shane told me to give you.

1: No going into the attic or basement.

2: No opening curtains or turning on the lights. Candles are everywhere so you may use them.

3: If someone tells you to do something, you do it right away with no questions asked.

4: Under no circumstances do you explore the castle at night."

"Are we clear?" he said sternly.

"Crystal," I answered.

"Ok then, eat quickly and be well presented for you are meeting the rest of the family. I’ll wait in the hall." he quickly finished. Benjamin got up and left the room silently and he closed the door behind himself.

I got up and rushed to my breakfast. Not pausing to taste it, I shoved the food into my mouth. I got dressed in jeans and a black blouse – it seemed like a suitable color. Pulling a white cardigan over the top, I went to the mirror. I yanked my hairbrush through the tangles and put a headband neatly in place.

I took a deep breath as I followed Benjamin back down the hallway and stairs to the ballroom. Five people stood in the room and they were all extremely beautiful, except for their blood red eyes that the taxi driver had warned me about. Everyone seemed to revolve around the pale man with the short black hair. I stood at the bottom of the stairs not knowing what to do. Benjamin gave me a small push to make me go forward.

"Hello my dear. I’m Lord Shane Van Nell," said the man that everyone seemed to revolve around.

"This is Elisabeth," she was also pale, but had long blonde hair. Shane went around the room and told me everyone’s names. Britany has fiery red hair; Sophia has long, straight, black hair, Aristro was the man with light brown hair.

"And of course you already met Benjamin." Shane smiled, showing perfect white teeth. Two of his front teeth were abnormally long, like fangs.......

"H-hello," I stuttered. Do they all know me?

"You’re Ellesmere Highburg. Welcome to the family." I smiled a small smile. Maybe these people weren’t too bad. Shane pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to me.

"As you will be living with us, we expect you to do these chores." Shane smiled and then everybody left the room leaving me alone in the dark. I unfolded the paper and read:

1: Dust and clean all furniture.

2: Cook your own meals in the first kitchen off the ballroom.

3: Mop and sweep floors.

4: Light all of the candles at night.

5: Do the dishes.

6: Clean the windows.

7: Tidy the gardens.

8: Repaint the entire castle black.

9: Feed the crocodiles in the moat.

10: Fix the broken stair.

Was I some kind of slave? What was with these people and their lists and demands? Maybe I’d spoke too soon. I reread the list of chores. How could these strangers expect me to do all these ridiculous jobs? I was having lots of second thoughts about living with the Van Nell’s; they seemed cruel.

I made my way back to my room only to realize I was hungry. I turned back towards my door when someone knocked.

"Come in," I said curious as to who would want to talk to me now. The door opened and there stood Aristro. Of course, he was as beautiful and pale as everyone else with the same blood red eyes but he looked different because the smile he had stretched across his face was warmer and more meaningful than the scowls of distaste everyone else seemed to wear around me.

"Hello Ellesmere," he greeted me kindly while shaking my hand. I flinched because his skin was as cold as ice and hard as bone.

"Hello," I mumbled. Aristro seemed completely comfortable as he sat in the same chair Benjamin had earlier this morning.

"I wanted to talk to you for a while." He didn’t go on and I realized he was waiting for a response from me. I sat down and smiled.

"You don’t talk much do you?" I shrugged and he laughed. It was a warm, happy laugh.

"I just came to see if you were alright. The rest of the family was pretty mean and disrespectful. But I’m not like them," Aristro said smiling and I could see that he wasn’t like them myself. His eyes were warmer, like running liquid than the others cold frozen eyes. His face was also brighter and more cheerful.

"I’ve noticed," I said smiling.

"She speaks!" Aristro crowed and I laughed.

"So what exactly happened to make you an orphan?" He asked out of curiosity and a small tear escaped my eye.

"Don’t worry; it’s none of my business anyway." Aristro looked away.

"No it’s ok. You were only curious," I whispered and he looked at me. A wave on unwanted and untrustworthy safety swept over me when I met his gaze.

"Are you ok? You look sort of sick," He sounded anxious. How could someone so caring come from such an unkind family?

"I’m fine. Well, my parents were murdered 5 days ago. We went for a walk and they were scared of something. They hid me in a video store and told me to stay, but I heard mum screaming and went to see if she was ok. I found them dead in the middle of the road. Some people thought they were run over but they had their necks ripped out and were completely drained of blood. I knew it was murder and if I ever find the person responsible for my grief, I will kill them and I will enjoy hearing their screams of pain." I started sobbing after my brave speech and Aristro stroked my hand to comfort me. Aristro looked like he was in pain and something about his expression made him look guilty. He knew something, something important and he didn’t want me to know about it.

"What’s wrong?" I asked trying to sound as sweet as possible.

"It’s just....." He hesitated.

I pushed harder for an answer. "You can tell me. I won’t tell them," I said nodding toward the door.

"I don’t know what to tell you..... I mean I want to tell you but I don’t know if I should," he hesitated, obviously struggling with what to tell me.

I patted his hand in comfort and he smiled a sad smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "I can’t tell you, I’m sorry. I can gives you clues though....." he smiled in triumph.

Shane gave you a list of chores didn’t he?" I nodded.

"Can I have a look?" I took the folded piece of paper and handed it to Aristro.

"Ok do you ever watch or read horror stories?" he asked, cocking an eyebrow.

"Yeah all the time, especially vampires," he flinched.

I got up and grabbed the book I had just finished reading from the top of my bag. "I just finished reading ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker." I said showing Aristro the cover.

"Ok. Did you take note of everything that happened?" he asked me. I knew the book by heart because I had to study it for an English essay.

"Yeah why?" I asked.

"Let’s just say it might come in handy." He winked, trying to pass it as a joke, but I could see the seriousness in his face.

"Ok." I said, curiosity and confusion evident in my voice.

"I must be off now. Bye-Bye." He smiled and curtsied in a half bow.

"Ok bye....and thanks" I said smiling, even more intrigued.

"For what?" Aristro questioned.

"For being understanding and kind," I said with a returning nod.

He nodded then walked out through my door. I waited for the creak in the stairs then went and knelt by the fireplace. I clicked my fingers over the wood and a small flame appeared. Within minutes the fire was blazing as if it had been going for hours.

The door flung open to reveal Aristro again. I was startled by his sudden reappearance.

"Oh sorry," he said taking in my expression.

"I just remembered I had this for you. It was sent to Mrs. Brooker who sent it here. No one read it."

He handed me the faded purple envelope. My name was written on the front in a neat script I recognized immediately as my fathers and sure enough, on the back it said’ Mr. and Mrs. Highburg’. I gasped then looked up at Aristro for an explanation but he was staring at the fire.

"How did you start it so quickly?" he asked confused. I was a horrible liar, but I decided to give it a go.

here you go guys!! Chapter 13!!!

Chapter 13 – Travelling and Unexpected Guests.

The van bumped up and down on the dirt road. I didn't know exactly where we were going but Claire had instructed that we pack our things and get away from Shane’s castle. My head rested against Oliver’s shoulder as we drove through the dark and quiet town of Brazov. We didn't think Shane would attack us here, that would mean revealing what he is to the townspeople, but we were still cautious. Shane was very determined to kill me. I knew exactly what Shane would be doing right now; making more vampires. With only six werewolves, a human boy and I, our numbers were getting dangerously low. What we really needed was more werewolves, but we didn't know where to find them and we couldn't make them.

Oliver stroked my hair gently. I looked up and met his gaze; he smiled.

One week ago I lost my last living relative. I hadn't really lost him though, I'd killed him. I kept asking myself if I'd done the right thing. Chris had despised the idea of becoming a vampire. I kept telling myself that Chris was probably somewhere safe with our parents, grateful that id freed him from the curse of the undead.

"We stay here tonight. Oliver you guard first," Claire said while parking the van on the side of the road. Oliver kissed my forehead, got up and left the van. Everyone got to work setting up blankets and pillows on the floor and soon we were all settled down in our makeshift beds, praying for a good night’s sleep.

I was just about to plunge the stake through Chris's chest.
"Ella!" He yelled. He started to change. His skin got its tan color back, his eyes returned to their brown color and the coldness left his skin. "Don't kill me," He pleaded.
"You're not Chris" I said.
"Yes I am." He opened his mouth and showed me his perfect, white and fangless teeth. "No fangs," he smiled back at me with that sweet smile I had grown to love in such a short time.
"How can I be sure?" I asked.
"Feel my heartbeat," he said, so I did. I replaced the stake with my other hand and listened to the thump, thump, thumping of Chris’s heart. I held my hand there, tears of joy rolling down my cheeks.
"I love you Chris," I whispered. He smiled at me again.
"You too," he replied.
Something invaded me then. I felt them take control of my mind and body. They pulled my hand away from Chris’s heart and shoved the stake into his chest.
I woke screaming.

"Ella! Ella? Ella, what’s wrong?" Oliver demanded while pulling me to him, hands frantically searching me for something wrong. I looked around at the worried faces of my friends.

"I had the nightmare again. The one with Chris," I mumbled, shaking uncontrollably and began to sob. Oliver hugged me to his chest and let me stain his shirt with my tears.
"It's ok. It's not real." He whispered into my hair. Henery came over to me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders. I held him to me and hid my teary face in his shoulder.

"Are you ok?" He asked in his cute, high pitched voice.

"I'm fine," I managed to croak out.

We all walked up the alleyway between two shops. I could hear the fireworks; people laughing and screaming and the rides and machines working away. Brazov has a huge community fair every couple of months. After the stress of the past weeks, and since we were just passing through, Claire had decided that we have a bit of fun for a change.

"Did you know I've never been to a fair before?" I said as I squeezed Oliver’s hand.

"Really? I live in the forest and I've been to plenty," he replied with a grin.

"Some people would think I've been hiding under a rock my whole life," I replied with a chuckle.

"You're gonna love this!" He squeezed my hand as we emerged from the alleyway and into a huge crowd of smiling people. Clowns on stilts walked through the masses of people, waving, laughing and playing with children. There were stalls everywhere selling things like, brightly colored fairy floss; foods like hotdogs and cakes, weird objects that I had no idea what their uses were and balloons of all colors, shapes and sizes. There were rides everywhere. Some small ones like jumping castles and bumper cars. Then there were the roller coasters, haunted houses and ghost trains, made for older people. I couldn't name all the rides, there was just way too many.

"Wow!" I gasped. Lisbin and Henery ran up to me then.

"Ella. Can I go play with Lisbin and May-Belle?" Henery asked me, eyes wide in awe as he took in the scenery.

"Sure honey," I answered with a smile giving him a gentle hug.

"Come on," Oliver said. He tugged at my hand, so I followed him over to the Ferris wheel. I nearly got stepped on by several clowns.
"Two please," Oliver said as he handed the money to the guy running the ride who smiled at me with an amazed expression. We sat in the seat at the bottom of the ride and Oliver pulled the safety bar over us. The ride started to pull us towards the sky. It paused for a short moment when we were at the top. I stared out at the black sky that was full of shinning stars. Fireworks exploded in front of me and I watched the rain of color as it slowly sunk towards the ground as they slowly disappeared into the darkness. I wanted to reach out and hold one in the palm of my hand.

"It's beautiful," I whispered.

"Not as beautiful as you," Oliver whispered in my ear. I smiled at Oliver and he bent down to kiss me but the ride began to move again and the seat we sat in rocked backward and forward. I laughed at Oliver’s disappointed expression; then gave him a peck on the lips. He smiled. The ride ended and Oliver dragged me around the fair for hours. I think we went on every ride and attraction. We watched men eat swords and fire and a woman squeeze herself into a glass box about half the size of herself. It was amazing.

"Come on. Let’s get fairy floss," Oliver suggested. He pulled me along with him by my hand and I wasn't watching where I was going. I had a head on collision with a girl about my age with wavy blonde hair.

"Oh sor-" I was cut short when I saw her face.

"Ella!" She squealed then hugged me tightly.

"Lilly! What are you doing here? Is Andrew with you?" I asked when we pulled apart.

"Visiting you of course an-" I cut her off.
"Have you been to my home yet?" I asked urgently, fear spreading across my face.

"No." She answered.

"Thank God." I let out the breath I wasn't aware I'd been holding.
"Where's Andrew?" I asked as I looked around for his familiar face.

"Oh. My. God! Ella!" I turned around and saw my tall, sandy haired best friend.

"Andrew!" He hugged me a little bit tighter than Lilly did and when he set me down Oliver squeezed my hand; that he was still holding.

"Oh sorry," I whispered to Oliver, and then added to my friends, "This is my boyfriend Oliver." Lilly looked him up and down. I knew that look; she was judging him. Seeing if he was 'worthy'.

"Hi, I'm Andrew," Andrew said to Oliver and shook his hand.

"Hellooo," Lilly exaggerated the 'o' on the end and gave me a wink. I smiled, suppressing a giggle. She approved.

"Hi. It's great to finally meet you. Ella talks about you all the time," Oliver said and slipped his hand into mine. I squeezed his hand. Lilly seemed to watch him like a hawk would a mouse. Nothing he did would escape her notice.

"Ella! Oliver!" Kyro called to us. Oliver and I shared a look.

"Ella, we have to go," He said with a stern look on his face.

"No. Can't they come? Just for a while," I used my small voice.

''You have to ask Claire," he reluctantly replied.
With my other hand I clutched Andrew and pulled him with me and Oliver. Andrew held onto Lilly so she wasn't left behind.

I knew what I was doing was risky. If Shane found out about out Lilly and Andrew he would use them against me, but I needed my best friends. When we reached the pack they all looked at me with surprised and questioning expressions.

"Oh God! Ella... we need to talk,” Claire exclaimed. She grabbed me by the arm and pulled me around the corner with her. She stared at me; hands on her hips, her face showing only disappointment.

"They have been my best friends forever Claire. I need to tell them. Can they stay with us just for a couple of days? Then I'll send them back to England," I pleaded.

"No." She said sternly

"Come on, plea-" She abruptly cut me off.

"Ella this secret... we can't tell anybody. Send them back to England. Shane will find them and kill them and what will you do then? You can't risk their lives like that," she stated matter-of-factly.

"I won't let him get them. Claire, I can't keep something like this from my family, the only family I have left." I emphasized the word family.
"How about I tell them and give them the choice of staying for a few days or going straight home?" I anxiously suggested.

"No." She repeated, more harshly with a frown on her face.

"I'll get down on my knees and beg," I warned.

"No." She said again, now with a more bite to her words.
So I did. I knelt down in front of Claire and gripped her hands in my mine as I begged,
"Please, please, please Claire."

"Ella! Get up! Yes, yes, yes. Tell them!" She was blushing violet and trying to pull away from me. People walked by, laughing and whispering in each other’s ears.

"Thank you! I love you Claire!" I jumped up and bounded around the corner and back to the others.
"Yes." I whispered in Oliver’s ear as I passed him. May-Belle gave me a look that could only be described as hatred while Lisbin and Henery seemed generally happy that there were some new people to talk to. I grabbed both Andrew and Lilly's hands and dragged them away from the group.

"What the he-" I cut Lilly off.

"Don't freak out or react badly, but I have something to tell you and you'll probably think I'm insane," They nodded and looked at me curiously.

"Well all those people I'm with; well they’re Werewolves," I stated as if it was the most natural thing in the world as I pointed in their direction. It seemed to take them a couple of minutes of silence before what I said registered.

"Ella... remember the movies? Monsters of the darkness…" I cut her off. She stood there, the fear in her eyes made me sad for a moment.

"They’re not monsters. They don't hurt people and you don’t bite people to change. It’s a thing you're born with. And it has nothing to do with the full moon," I explained. I heard a chuckle in the distance. I knew it was Oliver as he listened with his all too keen hearing. Obviously, he was making sure I was safe while giving us the privacy we needed to sort through this shocking realization.

They thought about it for a moment then shrugged.

"I guess their ok" Lilly said.

"It's sort of cool," was Andrew's response.

"Is Henery a werewolf?" Lilly asked while watching as Oliver picked Henery up and spin him in a circle.

"No. He's human." I confirmed as a smile crept over my face as I watched my two favorite boys play together.

'Wait. Oliver's a werewolf right?" Andrew asked.
I nodded.
"Are you sure it's safe to date a werewolf?" he asked, genuinely concerned for my safety.

"Yes, it’s safe. Oliver would never hurt me," I stated impatiently.

"Are you absolutely positive?" Andrew urged.

"Yes, I'm positive. Why are you so concerned?" I kept my tone level so he knew I wasn't angry or hiding something.

"I love you Ella. I think of you as my sister. Remember when we were younger we used to tell people be were siblings? Well, I still feel that way. Plus, I enjoy playing the part of the brother you never had. It has its advantages," he continued.
That stung. Of course Andrew and Lilly didn't know about Chris. Andrew has no idea that I actually had a real big brother that loved me…and I killed him.

Tears ran silently down my cheeks.

"Ella? Why are you crying?" Lilly asked. She placed a worried hand on my shoulder.

Oliver suddenly appeared in front of me. "Ella. What’s happened?" he asked, concern and protectiveness written all over his face.

"They don't know about Chris," I mumbled between sobs.
Oliver pulled me to him and I sobbed against his chest. Everyone was silent for a moment and then, I presumed, Oliver answered the questioning expressions on Lilly and Andrews faces.

"Ella did have an older brother," Oliver said while he stroked my hair.
"His name was Chris," he explained as he rubbed soothing circles on my back.

"Oh God!" exclaimed Lilly, tears forming in her eyes as well.

"Wait a second. Did? Was?" Andrew had always been good at English. He knew a past tense when he heard one.

"You don't know about the vampires either," Oliver sighed.
"Come on. Back to the van and I'll tell you what happened," he stated as we all turned to head back to the comfort and safety of the pack.
Everyone shuffled slowly to the van and once we were all settled and comfy inside, Oliver began my tale. I leaned against Oliver, his arm draped around me protectively. Lilly sat at my feet and clutched one of my hands. Andrew sat next to me and held my other hand. His fingers traced patterns across my skin and froze every so often when he heard things he didn't like. "...and now we're on the run. To keep ourselves alive," Oliver finished.

"Oh Ella." Lilly whispered and squeezed my hand. Andrew twinned his fingers with mine. I looked up and met his gaze. His expression was sad. I smiled halfheartedly and turned to face Lisbin when he spoke.

"So are you guy’s weirded out or what?" He asked cheerfully.
Henery was asleep in his arms, looking peaceful and content. I hoped his dreams were colorful and happy because his reality was the complete opposite.

"No. It's sort of cool in a way." Andrew said then exchanged glances with Lilly. When he turned back to face me his face was filled with sadness.
"We need to tell you something Ella," she said. This did not sound good. The others watched us with great curiosity. Except for May-Belle, of course. She was painting her fingernails hot pink.

"Go on," I said, tense and trying to brace myself for whatever bad news they had to tell me.

"Well, Andrew and I are runaways as well," Lilly muttered quietly, but I still heard.

"What!" I yelled, startled.

"My parents divorced. It was horrible. They fought and fought and fought. Eventually, so caught up in their own world, they forgot all about me." Andrew told me, such sorrow in his warm eyes.

"And my parents perished in a house fire last week. I was out with Andrew and when I got home I was greeted by long black bags carrying my parents bodies away; fire trucks, ambulances and aggressive police officers," said Lilly, tears rolling down her cheeks once again.

"So we ran away. Caught a plane and flew over here in search of the girl no-one had ever seen," Andrew concluded with a faraway gaze.

"Oh God. I'm so sorry. Here I am going on and on about how unlucky I am, but you guys are just as unfortunate." I jumped up and hugged them both fiercely.

"What do you mean by 'A girl no-one has ever seen'?" asked Daniel.

"Well, not a single person in Brazov knows who you are or seemed to have ever even heard of you," Andrew answered and slipped his hand back into mine.

"Well, I'm not surprised. She was flown over here, sent to the castle; stayed there a night and fled to the woods," Kyro said sarcastically.

"Ella has only been into Brazov a few times. No one notices a group of teenagers roaming the streets though." Claire put in.

"I suppose," Lilly said. We were all silent for a few moments, and then I spoke.

"Claire?" I pleaded with my eyes.

Claire looked at me knowing what the full question was. “Vote." She declared.
"All those in favor of Andrew and Lilly being sent back to England?" No one made a sound or moved.
"All those in favor of them staying with us?" Everyone raised their hands and a few yelled 'They stay!'.
I hugged both Lilly and Andrew; then snuggled up to Oliver's chest.

We all stayed up very late that night. Talking and catching up on everything that had happened since I left England.

Oliver and I had gone outside for fresh air. We sat at the base of a tree, wrapped in each other’s embrace. I gazed at the stars in the night sky. The mesmerizing points of light. It was strange to think that maybe each one was its own world of love and life.

"Your friends are very judgmental," Oliver stated.

"They are," I agreed. "Lilly likes you." I added.

"And Andrew's another story altogether" Oliver sighed.

'It's not that he doesn't like you. He just isn't sure if he can trust you to look after me. He knows I'm a hard person to care for." I said with a laugh.

"He cares about you, a lot," pointed out Oliver.

"I know. He has known me a long time," I said defensively.

"Maybe too much…" I cut him off.

"You're not jealous are you?" I asked with a grin spread across my face. My head rested on his shoulder and Oliver stroked my hair.

“Maybe just a little," he admitted in barely a whisper.

"Why?" I asked.

"I didn't mind the whole I love you thing with Chris; he's your brother, but it's different with Andrew. He's just a friend and he's known you for a lot longer than me. He actually can read your expressions and understands what you say. All the time" He sighed.
"I know, I'm pathetic," he said and looked away embarrassed.

I put both hands on his face and gently turned him back to look me in the eyes, “No you’re not. You just love me," I smiled as he lovingly gazed back into my eyes.

"Yes, I do." He agreed but his voice was still sad.
I turned so I was sitting on his lap still facing him, never letting our eyes lose their connection and asked, "Do you want me to make you feel better, prove how much I love you and only you?"

'If you can,” he whispered back, his voice more husky.
I smiled, then leaned in and pressed my lips gently to his. His hands pressed against my back, pushing me against him. I twined my fingers in his hair to deepen the kiss as he let out a small moan.

I pulled my lips away from his. 'Better?" I asked with a knowing smile.

"Not quite," He then pulled me back to him and everything around us just disappeared into the night.

Everyone sat around the blazing fire. People chatted, laughed and some just sat gazing at the colorful flames. We were in the woods somewhere between Brazov and Russia. I sat next to Andrew and Oliver while reading my book on Elements.

Spirit is an element which has many components. One of its main uses is communicating with dead people or healing. It also enables access to people’s minds.

'Look," I said to Oliver and passed him the book. He read the few lines.

"That sounds handy. Healing." He smiled.

"Yeah, I just don't know how to do it," I sighed.

"You'll figure it out, it takes time and practice love." Oliver took my hand and squeezed my fingers. The light from the fire made beautiful patterns on his russet skin. We gazed into each other’s eyes for what seemed like the longest moment.

Rustling noises came from the bushes behind us and I turned, startled, to see what it was. I summoned my magic; Daniel, May-Belle and Lisbin had already phased and were growling, teeth bared in the direction of the noises.

Whatever it was came closer and I held my breath as it emerged from the bushes.
