Chapter 1

Moving back (BPOV)

Coming back to Carlisle was as much exciting as it was dreadful. When we had grown too 'old'
to still reside in our old town, Carlisle had tried to drag me to Chicago, Illinois but i had refused i wanted to live in Europe for a while, life in the United States always reapeating had made me suffer. I had tried to convince him to come with me but it had been worthless he had still gone to Chicago, now the centre of Chaos, the Heartland of the now a very serious cough. He was, as always, following his calling, like he had when he had saved me, me but not my mom or dad. just me, mom and dad's hearts having already stopped by the time he got to us, just mine had kept going. But now it was frozen as much as his.

He hadn't known when we had separated that his job would turn into caring for this ver weird strain of cough but that didn't matter as i came to reunite with him. He was once again my 'brother', i would be his very educated sister, stuck with him after our parents had been killed in a 'robbery'. Atleast he had spared me the torture of sitting through classes by saying i had had a private tutor, he had by now set up everything for me to move back in with him. But i was certain that going back now was tempting fate as he would be very short tempered because he couldn't be at the hospital 24 hours straight trying to find out the similarities between his sick patients. That would be too bad, but atleast i would actually have him during the day, just my nights would be lonesome, and even then maybe i would go to the hospital and help him, he would be happy to have untireable help, i was sure.

I had returned not because of the war, but because i had missed him, i had left in 1915 before the States had joined the war, and now i was returning, because I missed Carlisle and the on going sameness of life back home.

The new house was just as big as the last one had been. Carlisle offered me to come with him to the hospital so i could meet all his assistants and the nurses. I had refuesed. I wouldn't go to the hospital my first day back with him, not the first day back in the states. He left for the hospital an hour before the sun set, so i decided to grab a jacket, Though i didnt need it, and go for a walk, maybe pick up some books from any store, not that Carlisle hadn't kept all my books from before i left. As i walked in the park i saw HIM. He was with a woman that appeared to be his mother, with her same hair, and a man, i guessed he must have been the father. They were a beautiful family, mother and son with bronze hair. They were having a picnic, and laughing so hard it was almost impossible for me to take my eyes of them.

In the middle of their laughter the older man started to cough, loud and hard. I didn't need to be Carlisle to know he was sick, but apparently his family did. Sad for them for if he didn't have that cough cure soon he wouldn't be around them for long. I walked on, they may have been the happiest humans i had seen in so long, but they were just that, humans, never knowing what was best for them and always making mistakes. I went home after that, sad to see happiness never lasted. i read for the rest of the night, waiting for Carlisle to come back.

"Bella?" Carlisle called softly as he came in.

"I'm over here!" I called from his study.

I looked up as he came in the door. "How was the hospital?"

"Bad, there are more people getting sick, i dont think it's just a cough anymore, i think i may be more." He had gone on talking about the Symtoms and its targets. I listened and discussed what it could be. But life went on... well time did, life, for me atleast, had stopped forty years ago.

Please comment, what do you think? i like to know :)

Chapter 6

"Edward, say hi to Dr. Cullen's sister, don't just stare!" She said disaprovingly.

The boy stood up then. Edward. Now we were on equal terms. He extended his hand out to shake mine and i followed the motions. He took my hand in his and brought it to his lips and kissed my finger tips. "Nice to see you again, Miss Cullen." He said in the same enchanting voice as the afternoon, though it was more strangled now than it had been earlier. As I looked out of the corner of my eye I could see Mrs. Masen was confused, and in my mind, I could almost see Carlisle choking with laughter behind us, but I didn't need to see him to hear him. We would have a long talk when we got home.

I turned to Mrs. Masen, and explained. "Sorry, Elizabeth, I forgot to mention I had met your son today. But then, I didn't know his name then." I said, and would have thrown Edward a glare if had had more confidence in knowing him. I looked at Mr. Masen instead. I saw him. He was really sick though they probaly couldn't notice by eye, but i could.

"Please dear, call me Elisa, Beth, Lizzy, Liz, or anything that isn't Mrs. Masen or Elizabeth. Okay?" I almost laughed. I nodded. When she kept looking at me in confusion I noticed Edward hadn't let go of my hand, and now he was just holding it.

I gently let go of his hand and decided to change the focal point of our conversation. But what could i change it to. I couldn't bring up Mr. Masen, and i couldn't think of anything else. In all these years of having almost no human contact i have lost my ability to have a proper conversation. Well, maybe i never had that ability.

"So how have you liked being here with your brother? Carlisle says you have been working here with him during the night, at times, though they don't let you do all the night shifts because you're too young?" Elisa asked, saving me the trouble of thinking of anything. I smiled greatful, as i began to check Mr. Masen's vitals. I wasn't liking what I was seeing.

"Well, they haven't been letting me, but can't they see we need as much help as we can get? I have liked living with him, though it does get a little dull with him sleeping most of the day." I told our public story. "I go out shopping and bring home more than i need, Basically I've just wasted time for the last few months." I admitted, more concentrated on Mr. Masen. The last times I had seen him, I had thought what had made him sick was only the cold that was going around, I had been wrong, and now I knew better: if he had had that cold since then he would have already died. He had tuberculosis, he had been sick with it since the first time I saw him. He was wasting away and when he came in contact with the Influenza he was already weakened. There was no way he would be able to walk away from the hospital now. Not alive. "He's not going to survive Carlisle.... the tuberculosis he's had for the last months has weakened him too much and now the inluenza is going to end his life." i said this too fast and too low for Edward and Elisa to hear, but Mr. Masen heard me. He opened his eyes and tried to smile weakly. he knew! I could feel the impending sadness again, not another one tonight.

"He's known he's had tuberculosis, he told me when we were alone. He had gone to another doctor, and that's how the flu has gone into an advance stage before he even decided to come see me, he didn't notice, and him being very weak has only made way for the flu."Carlisle said just as fast from the other side of the ward. "I... that's why you are ther with him and his family, he needs to live happy a little longer."

There was no hope. Then I remembered, tuberculosis was infectious. "Won't the other patients get sick with him here?" I asked quickly

Carlisle thought of what I said. "HE isn't contageous."

"But when the others know it'll be a controversy."

He saw that it wouldn't take long for either one of the voulunteers or one of the nurses to notice that Mr Masen had more than just the influenza. They would see he also had tuberculosis, and they would get antsy to be int the same room with him... "We'll have to put him in a room to his own. Where only you and i can attend to him." I heard him leave the patient that was closer to the main entrace and start to walk back to us. His light footsteps standing out only beacuse they were the lightest, everyone else was tired by now. When he was standing by me, I looked up and smiled. "Go get the room ready." he murmured. He started to talk to Edward and Elisa but I didn't pay attention as I walked through the room, passing the seven other patients, four on the left side of me, and the other three on the right. When I got to the door, I didn't take a last look at the bland white walls, I didn't need the images the last glance could bring, and I would be back when I came to get them to move them to the room, so there was no reason to torture myself more.

Hope you have enjoyed! AND Please comment!!!
