Prologue: BPOV My name is Isabella Marie Swan. My mother’s name is Renee. She had Claudia two years after I was born. Which basically is the reason why she never pays anymore attention to me. She didn’t used to be like that of course. In fact, before Claudia entered the picture, we were practically like sisters. Now it’s always about Claudia. No matter if it’s doing HER laundry, cooking HER food, or cleaning HER room. So you can see why I’ve grown to resent Claudia. My dad Charlie is the one who always gives me a lot of attention. Renee? Not so much. Which was why I immediately perked up when one Sunday afternoon, she announced, “Wow, I have got to tidy this place up before your dad gets back!” Charlie is chief police of our small town, Forks.

He’s been in Florida for about three months now with some investigation, so I was pretty surprised to hear that he was coming back so soon. When he goes somewhere else, he usually stays there for about half a year or more. “Really? When is he coming back?” I jumped up from the couch. I was seven and a half. My eighth birthday would be in a month. I wasn’t too excited about it though. I had stopped expecting Renee to go out of her way to make sure the day would be an unforgettable one, when Claudia was born. “Oh,” Renee sounded surprised.

She’d probably forgotten I was in the room at all. “Your father will arrive in four days. We will go to the airport to meet him. He must be so tired after all these months. I want him to be able to rest so try not to annoy him, alright?” she wasn’t even looking at me, as she bent down to help Claudia with her math homework.

She was in kindergarten now. For some reason, Renee thought it was a huge deal. She’s always begging to help Claudia, even when she doesn’t need it. I wanted to grab my mother’s shoulders and scream, Wake up mom! Wake up and see that you have another daughter! Her name is Isabella! Or have you forgotten that too?

But I didn’t.

Even if I had, it wouldn’t do any good. Whenever I complained to her in the past several years, all she’d say would be, “Isabella, honey. Don’t you think you’re being a little unfair to your little sister Claudia? She needs attention too, you know.”

Instead, I sighed as walked out of the room, biting my lips, trying not to let my tears spill.

Charlie’s return would hopefully make things better.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
“Excuse me,” Renee said politely that Wednesday. The three of us, Claudia, Renee, and I were outside the airport waiting for Charlie’s plane, trying to walk up the stairs. Trying. But not succeeding.

There were enormous crowds all around us, pushing and shoving.

“Excuse me!” Renee barked again, when the teenage boys in front of her wouldn’t budge.

They showed no signs of even hearing her.

“Auugh!’ Renee groaned. She looked down at me for the first time this morning.

“Isabella, do you mind watching Claudia while I go in there?” she asked pleadingly. “I don’t want you two to get lost while we’re trying to walk through everyone. Just stay at the bottom of the steps and wait for awhile. That way you can just stay in one place.”

I nodded. I had wanted to go inside so I would be the first person to see Charlie, but looked like that wasn’t about to happen.

Renee nodded in return and together, we tried to make our way back down the stairs.

But that seemed impossible. During the time we had been trying to go up, other people had arrived making this place even messier and more crowded.

Renee sighed impatiently, glancing at her watch. “Well, maybe you two can just stay here,” she finally said.

She lifted Claudia off her back and set her down in the middle of the stairs, moving my hand into hers.

Renee looked uncomfortable with leaving just the two of us alone here, but another glance at her watch made her forget about that.

“Take care of Claudia!” she ordered me, before turning her back to us and pushing her way back up the stairs.

I kept my eyes on her until she disappeared from sight.

Then I nervously glanced around me.

Claudia and I were standing in between an old lady in a wheelchair and a girl that had a nose ring and was whispering furiously into her black phone.

Goth, I thought.

“I can’t wait to see daddy!” Claudia yelped. I glanced down at her. No glared down at her.

“He’s going to love all my drawings from school!” she continued smiling. She started jumping up and down.

“Claudia SWAN!” I hissed under my breath. “Daddy isn’t here to see your drawings or whatever. He’ll probably just want to talk with me.” At least I hoped he would. I wouldn’t be able to stand it if Charlie suddenly turned into one of Claudia’s biggest fans.

I threw her hand away.

Claudia bit her lip, looking like she was about to cry. I instantly felt bad. She was my sister after all.

I looked away in fear that I would become mesmerized by the way rain was pouring onto her hair, making it look all wavy and the way her soft brown eyes seemed to shine. That was one thing alike about us.

We both had chocolate brown eyes that almost every grown up we meet fusses over about.

But that’s probably about it.

While I like things like volleyball, writing, and reading, she’s into drawing and shopping.
I still didn’t look at her after about ten minutes.

That’s when I spotted the group of teenage boys that had been in Renee’s way before. They were heading my way.

I immediately tensed up. They looked about eighteen or nineteen.

As I took in their dark ripped identical black shirts, and smug expressions, one word came to mind: troublemakers.

“Awww, look it’s a little baby!” the toughest looking one purred.

“How cute,” another one remarked, lifting his sleeve to show his huge muscles.

For some reason, these comments bothered me. I wasn’t sure why though.

Cute baby? I decided they couldn’t mean me or Claudia. No one ever said anything about me being physically attractive or anything. And Claudia was no baby.

But that didn’t make the feeling of unease go away.

I looked in another direction, resting my eyes on the goth girl.

I kept my eyes on her for another ten minutes as I started wondering if Renee was ever going to come out. Surely it had been almost half an hour now.

I glanced back down at Claudia. She wasn’t there.

I stopped breathing. Oh no! Where was she? Did Renee come and get her? No, of course not.

I panicked, my head moving quickly around to see if she was anywhere.

Then I looked down the stairs.

There she is, I thought relieved. Then I saw what was going on.

The teenagers had grabbed her and she was being pulled along behind them.

“Claudia, CLAUDIA!” I screamed. I shoved people in my path out of the way as I raced down, my arms stretched towards her.

I screamed, as I slipped on the cold wet rain.

I cried out in pain again as I landed on stomach on the stairs.

By this time, Claudia was about fifty yards away from me.

My first thought was to get help from someone who could easily catch up to them.

But just as I was about to, I thought about it again.

With Claudia out of the way, Renee wouldn’t have to always pay attention to her, and actually remember that she had another daughter.

I wouldn’t always have to sleep in the small bedroom that was only about ten feet wide.

I wouldn’t always have to finish up Claudia’s meals when she couldn’t eat everything herself.

Or be forced to give my favorite clothing up to Claudia before I’d even started wearing them.

I lowered my arm that was still stretched in Claudia’s direction, watching my little sister leave my life. . .forever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Immediately, I regretted my foolish and selfish actions.

Nothing turned out like I’d planned.

Renee was so shocked and angry with me that she had to stay in the hospital for a month.

After she returned, she would barely talk to anyone, not even Charlie.

She treated me even worse than before, and every day, even if I would do something upsetting in the tiniest way, she would start screaming about how she wished she only had Claudia.

That hurt. She’d never really shown too much liking to me since Claudia was born, but she’d never gone out of her way to make me feel bad either. In fact, I couldn’t even remember the last time she’d screamed at me.

There were thousands of ads in the paper. But no one called and the police eventually gave up.

Charlie took it just as bad as Renee, to my dismay.

This was way worse than being just ignored completely.

Then came the shocking news a year later.

One late night, I couldn’t sleep and decided to go downstairs to the kitchen.

While I was walking, I heard Charlie and Renee in their room. They seemed to be arguing about something.

Charlie was pleading and she was hissing under her breath.

About a million things that could be wrong ran through my head. Had Charlie lost his job? Was Renee sick?

The next morning, Charlie and Renee came into my room.

Charlie sat on the edge of my bed while Renee just stood, her arms crossed, leaning onto the door.

“Bella, honey, we’re getting divorced.” he announced as if this was just normal news.

I sat up straight and starting crying.

“Divorced? No, daddy, no, why? What about me. . .?”

Didn’t they care about me anymore? Who would I stay with?

As if he read my mind, Charlie continued, “We’ve already decided that you will stay with me, and Renee will move somewhere else. Maybe Florida.”

Chapter One-First Sight

Eleven Years Later. . .

Bella tottered around the edge of the sidewalk, her feet barely staying inside her six inch black high heels.

“Stupid shoes!” she threw her hands up.

If she didn’t get to the bus stop in two minutes, she would be late for her first day of work!

Just then, a few yards ahead of her, the bus stopped, and the doors opened, letting in a bunch of tired passengers.

“Hey, hey!” Bella shouted, trying to be heard by the driver, while waving my hand furiously.

The light changed, and she ran over. Well, running in these shoes meant walking two centimeters a minute.

By the time she made my way over to the bus stop, the bus had already disappeared down the path.

“Aww man!” Bella groaned slumping down onto the ground. It was eight’’o’clock in the morning, and it was still pretty cold out here.

Especially, since she lived in Forks, Washington, the rainiest place in the whole world, as far as she was concerned.

Her cell phone rang, and she flipped it open sadly. It was probably her new boss. And this would not be a pretty conversation.

Bella guessed she was about to be fired or something. On her first day!

But the voice that greeted her wasn’t a strict, cold one.

It was Kristalyn Duran, her best friend. She lived in Seattle, and didn’t go to Forks High School like Bella did. Kristalyn had ultra curly blond hair, green eyes, and her dad was practically a millionaire.

“Hey Kristalyn,” she sighed.

“Why so down?” she questioned.

She doesn’t sound too happy herself either, Bella thought.

Bella groaned again, “It’s my first day of work and I’m late!”

“Why?” Kristalyn giggled. “Last night you sent me a two page email saying how you were going to make the best first impression possible!”

Bella wasn’t in the mood to be teased. “My dad Charlie made me dress up in some grown-up suit and a pair of “cool” high heels. I swear if the heels are a bit longer, my head would be banging on the trees!”

“That doesn’t sound too bad,” Kristalyn laughed again. “I like high heels. If you don’t like them give them to me!”

“That’s what you think,” Bella muttered. “And you can have them if you want. I’m not spending another day in these! You would think I’m meeting a prince or something!”

She fingered the bright green leaves on the rocky ground. More people were starting to walk around, but remained seating on the edge of the sidewalk.

“Well enough about me! What wrong over there with you?” Bella asked, shuddering slightly in her long black coat, rocking back and forth.

“You remember how my dad Greg was talking about moving to Italy?”

“Yeah I remember,” Bella replied, not bothering to mask her disappointment.

“Well he’s bugging me about that again. He said something about receiving a really great job offer there.”

“Are you kidding me? He’s a millionaire!”
“I know right,” Kristalyn grumbled.

Bella heard some knocking over the phone and a second later, Kristalyn whispered softly. “Sorry Bells, gotta go!” she paused then added, ‘The eiviiiiil man has arrived!”

Bella laughed, then hung up, and started dialing her bosses’ number.

She was already late. She could start work again tomorrow

Meanwhile, Kristalyn wasn’t having a much better day than Bella.

Her dad Greg made his way into her enormous room.

“Kristalyn.”

“Yes?”

“Have you been considering what I’ve kept asking you? About moving to Italy?” he asked hopefully.

“Not really,” Kristalyn replied flatly, lying on her stomach, her arms resting on her pillows, where locks of her unruly blond hair was spread out.

Greg sighed. “I don’t want to pressure you sweetheart, but this job offer means a lot to me.”

Kristalyn sighed. “But we already have so much money! What’s so special about this job?”

“Never mind,” Greg mumbled. He got up and departed with a simple “think about it.”

“Oh I’m thinking about something,” she murmured under her breath. “But it has something to do about running away!”

As soon as her door closed tightly, she threw one of her huge pink stuffed animals at the door.

It barely made a sound.

That was when she spotted a tiny white box on her bookshelf.

She reached for it, grabbing it, opening the lid.

Inside, there were large flashcards with all towns and states on it.

Kristalyn grinned.

I’ll pick a card and whatever place I get will be the one I escape to, she thought eagerly.

She closed her eyes, and shook the box, then grasped one tightly.

She opened her eyes and stared down. . .and saw the word Georgia printed bright and clear on it.

“Are you kidding me?” she moaned, staring up at the white ceiling. “God, give me a better place, please!”

“One more time!” she encouraged herself. “This will be the last one and I promise I’ll go wherever the card says!”

She reached in again, and this time she pulled out. . .Forks, Washington!

Her mouth opened and her eyes popped out. “That rainy place?” she spluttered. “If I go here, I would have to be Little Mermaid or something! All that rain!” she shuddered, but then rethought about it. “Forks is where Bella is,” she said thoughtfully. “And I bet she’ll let me stay at her place if I ask her!”

Kristalyn grinned, looking around her room. “Time to start packing!

Bella had finally gotten through the confrontation with her new boss. It hadn’t exactly been pleasant, but it’d gone better than she’d imagined.

All that pleading to keep her job had made her thirsty, and she was glad to spot a water stand across the street.

After she handed over the money, she grabbed the cold bottle and filled my dry throat with it.

Bella stuffed the rest of the water into her backpack and noticed the scrapbook I’d put in there too, along with my silver camera.

She flipped through the scrapbook, taking in all the colorful pictures I’d taken.

She’d always been into photography for as long as she could remember. . .which was eleven years ago. . .right after she’d let Claudia get. . .kidnapped.

Bella stiffened at the thought. She hadn’t really thought about all that for awhile now, but every time she did, she couldn’t stop thinking about it.

After three years, Charlie and Renee had gotten remarried. Renee never got over the whole reason why they got divorced in the first place, but she didn’t act cruelly towards Bella anymore.

Bella tried to snap out of it, but she just couldn’t like usual.

She still remembered the way the gang had been laughing, while hauling Claudia away. . .the way she’d been crying so hard. . .

She was so focused in those horrible memories that she couldn’t see or feel anything around me. . .until someone pulled hard at her bag!

“Hey!” Bella screamed, waving at him. “You thief! Stop him! Stop him!”

Unfortunately, there weren’t any people around.

But just then, out of the blue, a guy with a dark cap on and sunglasses started running after the thief.

Bella tried to race along, but in these tall heels, that was next to impossible.

No. It was impossible.

“Be careful!” Bella yelled, not sure if he could hear her.

The thief was already out of sight, and she had no idea if she knew him or not.
Bella saw a telephone pole next to me, and she dialed the police station as quick as she could. She prayed it wasn’t Charlie, her dad who answered. It wasn’t.

“Hello?”

“Hello? This is Bella, Chief Swan’s daughter! Some guy just grabbed my bag and ran away!”

“Where are you right now Bella?” the person demanded.

Bella quickly gave him the street number, then hung up.

She felt like she was watching a comedy movie as her rescuer’s feet pounded on the ground.

Edward, however felt like he was in a horror/action movie.

He kept thinking he’d caught up to the thief who’d stolen the brunette girl’s bag, but would escape by inches.

“Auuugh!” he cried out frustrated. He was going to be late for his part-time job, and hiss boss wasn’t a very forgiving one. If he got fired, it would be some time before he could find another job.

And how would he live before he found a new job?

His family didn’t have much money--he lived in a tiny house, and the rest of his family, Alice, Esme, Carlisle, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie were all back in Tennessee.

They’d sent him out here to look for work.

But he just couldn’t let some thief steal some poor girl’s belongings.

Finally, as soon as he was only two yards away from the thief, he put his head down and used as much force as he could to throw the thief onto the sidewalk.

Both of them were pretty strong, as they wrested back and forth. But the thief kicked Edward away, and ran away as fast as he could, throwing the bag onto the ground.

Edward started to run after him again, but decided to bring the bag back to the girl first.

He picked it up, and walked around the corner, bumping into three angry policemen.

“Hey what do you think you’re doing?” Heshouted as they handcuffed my hands, and grabbed the bag away from him.

One of the cops shook his head at Edward. “You should be ashamed!”

“Ashamed?” His voice scaled up. “But--All I did was take this bag from--” Edward was going to say from the thief, but another police cut him off.

“How could you just run off with some poor girl’s belongs?”

Edward raised his eyebrows. They thought he was the one who’d robbed the brunette girl?!

“Oh no, you see I just took this from--” he was going to say from the actual thief, but he was cut off again.”Yes from the girl, we know,” the policeman grumbled. “Now let’s go to the police station. You’re in heaps of trouble. It’s a good thing the girl’s father Chief Swan isn’t at work today! You’d really get it then!”

The police car pulled to a stop, and the Bella was escorted out of the car.

The police led her into a small unfamiliar room. It was spilt in half, a glass window separating the two parts. One the left side of the room, there were small tables with black leather chairs. Four men were standing in a row on the right side of the room. They all looked different, but all of them wore unhappy, grim expressions on their faces. There hands were behind their head, and their bodies were straight and stiff.

Bella sat down self-consciously and glanced at each of the four men’s faces.

When she came to the fourth one, she stifled a gasp. She was staring straight into the pair of most beautiful and pure green eyes. They were clear and warm, and the rest of this stranger’s face was just as pleasant. It was a face Bella never thought she’d see anywhere aside from a magazine cover.

She caught herself staring at his sweet-looking red lips.

Luckily the policeman was too busy firing off questions to notice.

“So Bella these are all of the men that were near the area when the robbery happened. They all claim to be innocent, but you will be the judge of that. Do you recognize any of these men as the thief?”

Bella bit her lip, humiliated. “Er. . .no, not exactly. I was thinking really hard and all of a sudden there was this strong tug at my bag, and the pounding of feet. I never got a chance to look at the thief’s face. Or my rescuer’s.” I added the last part.

He frowned and nodded, jotting something down on a piece of paper.

“Are you sure you can’t remember even a small detail?” he pressed, frowning.

Bella shook her head.

The door opened, and another policeman came in. He was carrying a familiar black bag.

“My bag!” Bella exclaimed, jumping up to claim it.

“Check to make sure everything’s in it,” the first policeman said, as the other one left.

She emptied all the items inside onto the desk in front of me.

“Yes, everything’s in here,” Bella sighed, embracing her camera and cell phone.

‘Well, the bag was found on you,” he said suspiciously to someone behind her. Bella looked up and found herself staring yet again at the beautiful bronze-haired guy. She blushed realizing he was returning her stare.

The door burst open again, a huge bald man stepping in, “No, no, he’s innocent,” he shouted.

“And. . .who might you be?”

“I own a water stand near where the robbery happened. I saw the whole thing,” he explained. “He was the one who ran after the thief, not the thief! And the other four men are innocent too. None of them have shoulder-length blond hair.”

“Can I go now?” Edward mumbled, as he was led outside to another room where there were stacks of papers everywhere. The other three men and Bella followed close behind.

“Sorry, not yet though. All of you will just need to sign these,” the cop handed each of them a piece of white paper with red marks and lines on them.

“Hey do you have a pen on you?” Edward asked the cop.

He looked at him strangely. “You have one right there,” he pointed to Edward’s coat pocket.

“Yeah, but I never really use it,” he said shifting uncomfortably, sounding a little protective.

The cop raised his eyebrows. ‘Why not? You have it on you right?”

Edward started to explain that it was the only thing he had left from his father, and he always kept it on him even though he never used it. It always made him feel as if he were there with him, even though Carlisle was a great stepfather, and so were his stepbrother Jasper, and his stepsister Rosalie.

“Forget it,” he sighed, signing his name.

He followed Bella out the door, and was about to start on his way to work, but she called out after him, “Hey, thanks for helping me! What’s your name?” she was surprised by her own bravery all of a sudden, but just couldn’t help feeling extremely careful comfortable around this complete stranger.

Edward glanced at his watch. He was over two hours late for work. Help.

“Just call me Prince Charming,” he joked glancing back up. At that moment, the wind blew through her hair, sending waves of brown flying everywhere.

Edward breathing almost stopped as he looked into her eyes for the first time, realizing for the first time they were almost the same shade as her waist-length hair.

Bella laughed, wondering why his mouth had fallen open like that. “Okay, then Prince Charming. . .” she took a mental deep breath. “Can I have your number please?”

She added quickly, “You know, just so I can call you up for lunch or something, as a way of saying thank you.”

Edward checked his watch again, “I’m really sorry, but I don’t have time right now! I’m really late for something important.” he took off, his long legs turning around and started running.

Without thinking, Bella whipped her camera out of her bag, and snapped a picture of Edward.

Edward glanced up, and grinned then turned back around. Bella took that as an invitation to take a few more pictures.

Finally she lowered her camera, and stared after him, as if in a trance. She was so focused on him, that she didn’t realize the bald man had sneaked up on her.

“Hey,” he patted her on the shoulder.

“Oh hi, thank you for helping. . .him,” Bella smiled.

“You’re welcome,” he laughed. “But do you know where the guy went? He left his pen here. It seemed to be very important to him.”

Bella whirled around, but by that time the beautiful mysterious stranger had already disappeared.

“Er. . .he left,” she replied. “But I’ll take that and return it to him.” she grabbed the pen, wondering how she was possibly going to do that.

“Well, be careful with it,” he frowned. Bella nodded. “What’s your name?” she asked, placing the pen inside her bag gently.

“Lenin,” he nodded.

“Well, thanks again Lenin!”

The doorbell rang at the Swan’s house. Charlie didn’t budge from his chair in the living room.

“Do me a favor and get that door!” Renee whined from the kitchen. Charlie sighed and got up, opening the door.

“Who is it?” Renee took off her apron coming over. “Travis!” she exclaimed. “You came!”

“Of course!” Travis Estevez grinned. “Where’s Bella?”

Renee smiled smugly. It was no secret that Travis had a huge crush on Bella. “Sorry Travis, she won’t be home for another two hours. It’s her first day of work.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, the doorbell rang again. Travis opened it and in walked Bella with a embarrassed expression on her face. She wasn’t surprised to see Travis since he lived only a block away from her, and practically spent twenty-four seven at her house these days.

She walked slowly into the living room and slumped down onto the couch, the other three hovering over her with concerned and curious expressions on their faces.

“Bells, honey why aren’t you at work? Did something happen?” Travis blabbered.

“I almost got robbed by some wacko,” Bella grumbled, sliding down even further.

“Gah!”

“Robbed?”

“Goodness!”

“What happened?” Charlie demanded, turning purple.

Bella sighed, then propped herself up on a pillow, and explained the whole thing. After she was finished, there was only silence. “Oh and I almost forgot,” she exclaimed, taking the black pen out of her bag.

Travis narrowed his eyes, “Why is your pen so rusty?” he wrinkled his nose as some dust blew upward from the pen.

“It’s no mine,” she giggled. “You know the guy that helped me? The one who ran after the thief? It’s his.”

“Well aren’t you going to return it to him?” Charlie pressed.

“Um. . .yeah I guess when I find out where he lives.”

“How are you going to do that? Do you even know his name?” Travis asked.

“No, not exactly but. . .oh never mind, I’m tired now.” Bella sighed, walking into her room, Travis trailing along behind her.

She turned the TV on while Travis sat on her couch working on his essay.

After a few minutes, he stood up an dreached for the black pen.

“Hey!” Bella exclaimed, jumping up to move his hand away.

Travis raised his eyebrows. “Can’t I just use it for a second? My pencil broke.”

“Um. . .when you put it that way. . . NO!”

Downstairs, the doorbell rang yet again.

Awhile later, Bella bedroom door opened. “Look who’s here to see you!” Kristalyn yelled leaping onto her bed.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!’ The girls screamed, hugging each other.

“I’m guessing your dad doesn’t know you’re here?”

“Nope!”

“Ooooh another pretty girl,” Travis teased. “Mind introducing us Bells?”

“Travis this is Kristalyn Duran, Kristalyn this is my best friend Travis Estevez.”

“You mean your boyfriend,” Travis corrected her. At the word “boyfriends” for some reason, the stranger with the green eyes flashed through Bella’s mind. She shook her head slightly.

“Who the heck around here is your girlfriend?” Bella rolled her eyes. She noticed that Kristalyn had a slightly dazed look on her face as she hugged Travis.

Looks like somebody has a crush, Bella thought to herself, smiling.

“Well I have to get going now,” Travis looked disappointed as he gathered his things and left.

The next morning, a Renee’s loud voice woke Bella up, and Kristalyn who was sleeping on Bella’s bed mumbled “go away” in her sleep.

“What is it. . .mom?”

“You will not believe this Bella!”

“Believe what?” she snapped.

“I just got a call answering to this ad!” Something cold landed on Bella’s cheek and she opened her left eye to read it.

It was a “Missing Person” ad. About. . .Claudia!

That woke her up. She gasped. “You--do you mean. . .”

“Yes, yes! It was Claudia who called! At least she said she was Claudia. But we’ll know for sure when she comes in two weeks!” Renee squealed.

Bella stifled another gasp. Coming here as in. . .live with them?! But. . .it had been eleven years. . .

“The newspaper is dated eleven years ago!”

“Claudia found it in her guardian’s basement.”

“She escaped from the teenagers?” That was pretty hard to believe.

“No, while they were hauling her away, a woman and her husband saw them.”
