The Twilight Saga

This is another fan fiction written by yours truly. What if Riley did take up the offer to leave Victoria when he had the chance? Read on and you'll find out. Enjoy!

Preface
It was all so disorienting; being a vampire was harder than it looked. Thank God I had Victoria to help me. I don’t know what I’d do without her.

Ch. 1
“You don’t have to do this, Riley,” the red-headed male, Victoria told me his name was Edward, said to me in a soothing, monotone voice. “You don’t have to fight. You can leave.” He stood in front of girl, his mate I guessed. She was human, that I knew for sure. I could hear her heart beating erratically with fear. The sound of blood pumping through her veins was a symphony to my ears. A cool breeze blew her scent across the little clearing between us and into my face. I had only smelled it one other time; when I stole her blouse from her room to use her scent for the army. It was much more potent now, and it made my mouth water. My predator instincts were kicking in and I wanted so bad to jump across the clearing and seize her up and drink from her. But Victoria wouldn’t like that. I had to hold back.

“Don’t listen to him, Riley,” Victoria ordered. I looked away from my target and looked up at her. She was in a crouch; teeth bared and had her blood red eyes locked on the human and her mate. “I told you about their mind games.”

She’s right. She told me about these yellow-eyed monsters; about how they would mess with my head, turn me against her; about how they were planning to take over Seattle as their hunting territory. I had to keep my focus.

“She’s using you,” the red head, Edward said to me. I turned my attention back to him. “She never loved you. Every touch, every kiss was a lie. She loved a monster named James. He tried to kill Bella and he was almost successful until I killed him. She just wants revenge. That’s why she built this army; so she could make me feel the pain of losing the one I loved like she does. You were just a pawn in her little game.”

James? She never mentioned a James to me; but by the sounds of things, the way that Edward talked there was a lot that Victoria didn’t tell me about. And who was this Bella? Was she the girl that Edward was guarding? Must be, because when he said James’ name she flinched and her heart picked up a little extra speed from past memories of the horrible incident.

I wish she would calm her heart. The only other thing that was swimming inside my head besides her scent was the sound of her heart going Bum Bum, Bum Bum, Bum Bum at a very fast pace. It reminded me of the past humans I’ve killed for my meals; the sounds of their hearts when I came out of the shadows, snuck up behind them, and sank my venom coated teeth into their flesh and drank. They were delicious memories, but they were making my lose focus. She was making me lose focus. Please calm your heart, I thought staring at her. Please.

I looked back to Victoria for her reassurance, to tell me this was all a lie. She took a pause that lasted for only a second before she turned to me and said, “You know that’s not true. I’ve always loved you, Riley.”

I noticed something in the tone of her voice, the way she said my name. There was no affection, not like Edward said Bella’s name. It was clear whenever he spoke of her that his unbeating heart would always be in her possession. But it wasn’t there in Victoria’s voice. I don’t know how I missed that before whenever she told me she loved me.

“Think about it,” Edward suggested. I turned my attention back to him as he continued. “You’re from Forks. You know the area. That’s something she needed; an advantage to make sure she won. You’re nothing to her.”

“Don’t listen to him!” Victoria ordered, venom seeping into her voice. She was getting angry and impatient. She wanted this over with. And quick.

I know she told me not to listen, but how could I not? Everything that Edward was saying was making perfect sense to me. It seemed like throughout this whole ordeal, ever since she Turned me Victoria has been nothing but abusive to me. Whenever I would report to her and she didn’t like what she heard she all but ripped me to shreds. But when I would give her good news about the army she would reward me, and that would send me mixed signals. I didn’t know what to make of it, so I stuck around and hoped that I would find out what all of that meant.

And now I have. But the question now was: Do I stay and fight or do I turn and run?

But how could I turn on everything that I’ve ever known since I’ve become a vampire? I knew of only one way to live, and this was it. I’d be completely alone if I left now; but I could hear the others out on the battlefield and they were losing. I could hear their screams of terror as they got ripped apart limb from limb. Victoria said that we would win easily; apparently that was another lie. She probably planned on being the only one that would survive the battle. God, how could I be such a fool?

I didn’t look, I didn’t even say goodbye to Victoria as I turned and ran into the trees. I could hear from behind me Victoria yelling, “Riley!” She only called my name once; that’s all she could get out before she was attacked. I could hear the sounds of fighting; snarls and hissing was exchanged. Then I heard the sound of an animal –it sounded like either a bear or a wolf- growling. After that there was only the sound of metal tearing; the sound of a vampire being killed. I stopped running and froze where I was. If I turned around now and went back I could try to fight off Edward and easily kill the animal. And if I survived I could piece Victoria back together and we could share the girl, Bella.

As I was just about to turn back I heard the crackle of a fire and a strong sweet scent filled the air. I looked up toward the sky and there it was; the thick black purple smoke that indicated a vampire’s funeral. I had seen it many times before when Victoria and I were in the early stages of building the army.

I stared up at the smoke for one more second before I continued with my escape. But I did not run towards the battle or where the billowing smoke was coming from; I ran in the direction towards Seattle. It was my only other real home besides Forks, and I sure as Hell couldn’t go back there.

As I ran I thought in my head, “Goodbye, Victoria. You were the only thing I was sure about in this world and you lied to me. You got what you deserved.”

Ch. 2
I kept running and running. Not stopping until I hit the outskirts of Seattle. I didn’t stop by the battle, only because I didn’t want to run into those hooded figures again. I feared that if I did I would meet the same fate as the newborns.

I found an abandoned warehouse and stayed there until the sun went down. I was bored beyond belief waiting for the sun to disappear behind the buildings and finally under the horizon. Before the sun vanished and was still hanging in the sky, I was curious as to what the sun would do to my skin; so as I stood in the shadows next to one of the broken windows I placed my hand in the sunlight and the result astounded me…

My skin sparkled and shined like a diamond ring under the lights of a display case. It was like millions upon millions of microscopic prisms embedded into my skin. I turned my hand over and the palm of my hand and the underside of my arm were just as dazzling s the topside.

As hypnotized and transfixed as I was I had to pull my hand out of the sun and back into the shade so that no one would see and report me to the police. That was the last thing I wanted right now, to be discovered. I knew my parents were looking for me. They have been for over a year. If they found me questions would be raised and they would know something was wrong with me. It would be better if they thought I was dead.

I thought back to how my hand looked in the sun and I was confused. Victoria had always told us that if we went out into the sun we would burn and char like the traditional vampires in books and movies. Was everything she told me a lie? Might as well be.

When the sun disappeared and the only evidence of its earlier appearance was the bleeding red sky, I emerged from my hiding spot and went out on the streets to do some exploring.

One thing about big cities was that there were loads of night life; from the dance clubs to the house parties. Then there were the bars that were open all night with their rough bikers and their rougher looking women. I went into a bar once and while I was there somebody started a fight and the whole building broke out in chaos. I hauled ass and got out of there before the cops showed up.

Of course that was back in my human days. Now I could hold my own easily against a dozen or so of those burly bikers. And maybe once I was done with them I’d have some fun with their girlfriends…

The thought made me shudder. Okay, I take that back. Maybe I could just kill them and put them out of their misery. Their bodies had to be riddled with disease.

As much as I didn’t want to I stepped into the closest bar and pulled up stool at the counter. I could feel some of the older men staring at me as I sat there and waited for the bartender to come by and take my order.

She was cleaning a glass when she came for my order. She was sort of pretty, I guess. Her bleach blonde hair was curled and cut short to her chin. She had bags under her eyes from working too many night shifts. Her eyes were a steely grey and I felt cold when she stared at me with them. Colder than usual, anyway. She had light crow’s feet visible at the corners of her eyes and I guessed she must’ve been in her thirties. Her figure was slim, but she wasn’t a stick. She had signs of motherhood. She must’ve had a little kid waiting up for her at home. Poor kid.

“What can I get for you, Hun?” she asked, her voice throaty and nasally. Must be a smoker, too.

“Shot o’ whiskey,” I ordered. I really didn’t plan on drinking it but I ordered it anyway.

She took out a shot glass and poured the desired alcohol into the glass. She slid it over to me and I caught it reflexively.

“You look like you’re coming off a bad break-up,” she observed.

“Something like that,” I said. I brought the whiskey to my lips and before the liquid made contact with my tongue I caught the scent of it. The drink smelt strong and nasty. Just like the taste…

When it made contact with my taste buds I wanted to spit it out. It wasn’t anywhere near the delicious taste of blood. Blood revived me and made me energetic. The whiskey tasted like poison and chemicals. I tasted soap enough times when I was a kid to know that I never wanted to taste it again. But I swallowed the whiskey and forced it down like a man. I slammed the empty glass down on the counter, but not hard enough to shatter it, and pushed it away.

“Want another?” she asked, ready with the bottle.

“No,” I answered, my voice slightly cracking from the drink. “How much do I owe you?” I was fishing in my pocket for money. I had at least twenty dollars. That should cover it, right?

“No charge,” she said, wiping down the bar. “It’s on the house.”

My eyebrow furrowed. “I… I don’t understand.”

She stopped her cleaning and looked at me. “It’s on the house,” she repeated. “That means you don’t have to pay. It’s free.”

“I know what it means,” I snapped, “but what I don’t understand is why you’re giving it to me for free.” I haven’t experienced hospitality since I became a vampire and I had almost forgotten what it was like.

“You’re going through a rough spot and I thought I’d help you out,” she explained. “And you know I should’ve checked your ID before I served you, but I figured you was old enough anyway.”

Actually if I remember correctly I was twenty years old. I hadn’t thought much about my human life since I’ve been a vampire. I’ve been busy with other things…

“And a word from the wise,” she continued, “and I know everyone says this, but drinking isn’t going to solve your problems. You have to do that yourself.”

I rolled my eyes and said, “Yeah, sure. Thanks for the drink.”

“By the way, cool contacts,” she complemented. I paused as I was heading out the door. How had she seen my eyes? I’m sure I didn’t make eye contact with her. I might as well before she asks any questions.

I continued to walk the streets for another hour until I came up on a dance club. The music was loud, even with the doors closed. Young people popped in and out, laughing with their friends; enjoying the evening even without the alcohol in their system.

I could hear their hearts easily over the loud bass. The sound of blood pumping through their veins at an accelerated rate, anticipated for the coming events of the evening was a better beat for me to dance to rather than the music.

Sense I didn’t have a watch, not anymore anyway, I looked up at the sky and did the mental math in my head. It usually got dark out around 8:30 and I hadn’t spent more than twenty minutes in that bar. The sky was completely black so I was guessing it was probably a little before ten. I had way too much time to spare before I had to go back to the warehouse. I suppose I could go in and try to socialize with the humans. And maybe while I was there I could pick out a few to have for a snack later…

*Sorry for the wait. Been busy with my other stories.*
