Chapter 4- DNA Test
“Bella, I don’t know who gave you that letter or why, but we’re not your parents.” Carlisle spoke in a calm voice, now. He was trying to relieve the tension in the room. It wasn’t working. Rosalie kept glaring at me like I was some spawn of Satan sent here to ruin her life.
“This isn’t what I wanted,” I said. “I didn’t come here to do this. I didn’t come here to make anybody upset. I just want to know the truth about who my parents are. That’s all. That’s all I want, a simple DNA test. If it turns out I’m not your daughter, after all, I’ll gladly leave here and never bother you, again.”
They all seemed to be thinking through my proposal with new eyes. Esme and Edward now seemed sympathetic towards me. Carlisle reached out his hand.
“Let me see the note, again.”
I took it out of my pocket and gave it to him. He read it with a serious expression, this time.
“Where do you think Lexie got the note?” He asked. I shrugged, meekly.
“It has to be from someone we know,” Esme spoke up.
“Yeah, from someone out to extort us,” Rosalie mumbled.
“This is a really old letter. It’s worn and torn. If someone were really after us, like you think, Rose, I don’t think they would have handed it off to some girl- I mean, Bella- and let her keep it all these years.”
“I hope you’re right, Daddy,” Rosalie said with an attitude. “Because if you’re wrong, this could end badly for all of us.”
Rosalie whirled around on her pink heels and headed up the staircase. I looked and saw Alice sitting on the stairs, She had her head between two poles, and was watching the whole time.
“I, seriously, don’t mean to cause any trouble,” I said.
“It’s alright,” Esme said, stroking my hair. “We will get this all sorted out.”
“Baron,” Carlisle asked. Baron leaned off the sofa and stood up straight. “Get me three envelopes.”
“Yes, Dr. Cullen.” And, he left the room.
A strand of my hair, A cotton swab of saliva from a cup that Carlisle had used, and one from Esme’s morning coffee went into three separate envelopes that Baron had sealed shut. They were now set on Carlisle’s office desk. I stared at the envelopes. They meant hope for me. Somebody touched my shoulder, startling me. I jumped.
“Oh. Sorry.”
“It’s okay, Esme,” I said.
“Why don’t you go see what the kids are up to. Make yourself at home. Carlisle will take the envelopes to the hospital to get tested the next time he goes out.”
“Thank you, Esme.”
“I know we’re doing the right thing. Everything will be fine.”
I wondered if she believed her words. It didn’t seem like she wanted me in her family. She was just nicer about it than Rosalie.
My heart had sunk to the pit of my stomach. And, I was hungry. As I walked around this huge mansion, I knew I could never get used to living in such a place. It felt like such a selfish thing to do, to live in such a house when easily more people could fit inside. Lexie always believed that the rich are selfish people who live in excess. But, I just believe they’re doing what all of us would, if we could.
Here, I would never have to sit in my car, outside in the cold, and quiver and hunger. I wouldn’t need for anything. It’s a lifestyle most people dream of, to have all that you need and could possibly want.
I walked, slowly, up the marble staircase, cautious of the Cullen kids. As I walked through the halls, and silently explored, I suddenly heard a baby crying. I followed the noise, thinking maybe I shouldn’t.
And came upon a double- doored nursery. I slid my fingers through the crack and pushed the door further open. Light was beaming in from an open window, framed with yellow curtains. And, there was Rosalie, holding a young child in her arms. The kid had her fingers in her mouth and was crying. Rosalie looked a little surprised and embarrassed.
“What’s up, Ramora,” she said, in a stale voice.
“Nothing. Esme said I could look around.”
The nursery was spacious and could fit five more cribs in it. I tried to start a conversation with Rose without seeming intrusive.
“How old?”
Rosalie stopped and looked at me. Her expression went from hateful to indifferent.
“She’s two. Her name is Lucie. And, yes, she’s my daughter.”
“She’s beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
Lucie had curly, light brown hair and big round grey eyes. Rosalie chuckled. “She looks nothing like me. She has her father’s eyes.” – as she said this, a wave of sadness overcame her. And she was fighting back tears. I didn’t know what to do.
“He must have really broken your heart,” I said, softly.
She flicked her hair back, trying to downplay her emotions. “You don’t know the half of it.”
“Atleast you have everything you need, though, right?” I wondered if I had said the wrong thing because Rose glared at me.
“I don’t have love.”
I started to glare at her, now. How can she think that? “I bet that baby loves you,” I said. She still glared at me, but she smiled when she looked at Lucie and thought about what I said.
{Chapter 4 DNA Test continued.}
“Rose,” Alice said, rushing through the door. She glanced at me. “Carolitta’s making us lunch. She said to hurry before it gets cold.”
“Broccoli soup Sundays,” Rosalie said. She scrutinized me when I just stared at her. “You’ve never had broccoli soup? Carolitta serves it with frybread and non- fat yogurt.”
“Sounds delicious.”
“It is. Lucie loves it.”
I followed the girls downstairs. Edward hadn’t said anything to me. I couldn’t tell if he was angry at me or just too shy to talk. I peaked inside Carlisle’s office. The envelopes were still there. It made me anxious to know they hadn’t moved. What was Carlisle waiting for? Did he even want the truth exposed? It wouldn’t matter if they wanted me or not. All I wanted was to know the truth.
“Come on, Bella,” Alice said, tugging on my sleeve. “Carolitta made some for you, too.”
We had lunch outside on the patio. It was on the front lawn. The Cullens were very accustomed to the cold, unlike me, who shivered at the smallest gust of wind. Carolitta was the Cullens’ maid. She wore a floral apron over her regular clothes. She poured everyone a cup of hot tea. While Carlisle was eating lunch with us, I thought about the more important thing he could be doing- like getting our DNA tests results done. I didn’t say anything about it. I didn’t want anyone to feel rushed.
Edward would glance up at me, and then look away when I caught him.
Rose passed Lucie onto Esme’s lap.
“Emmett is at a friend’s house,” said Esme. “Just in case you wake up, and there’s an extra person in the house.” She smiled and sipped her tea.
“Bella, you can sleep in one of the guest bedrooms,” Carlisle said. I tried not to let it show, but I was mad. They’re letting me sleep over, which means they don’t plan on going to the hospital, today or tonight. I started to feel like Mr. and Mrs. Cullen were hiding something. Any normal person would hurry to find out the truth, I think. Or, maybe it was just too much for them to take in all in one day.
“I really appreciate that. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Cullen,” I said, politely.
“It’s no problem,” said Carlisle. I had a happy thought, and hoped, one day, I get to call them Mom and Dad.
Chapter 5- House Rules
"So, Bella. Why don't you tell us all about Texas," Esme said.
"Huh?"
"You said, before, that you came here all the way from Texas, didn't you?"
"Oh right! Yes, yes I did."
"Is it just like in the movies? Cowboys and southern belles?" Alice asked.
"Not always. But, I think the movies deserve some credit. For what it's worth, the portrayals are pretty accurate."
"I've never been outside of Alaska. We're pretty stranded here," said Alice. Carlisle shot her a hot glare.
"Stranded? Why?" I asked.
"Oh, well, I didn't mean stranded. I meant, well, we never get to-"
"What Alice is trying to say," Esme cut in, "Is we love it here, in Alaska. We wouldn't want to live anywhere else. There's nowhere else we'd rather be."
"Well, maybe, one day I'll take you down to Texas, just so you can see what it's really like," I said to Alice.
"That's be cool," She sounded excited, then she slumped in her chair like she said something wrong.
After lunch, Alice showed me her room. It was loud with color. She's into unicorns. She has unicorn wallpaper and a throwpillow shaped like a unicorn's head.
"My parents are so strict. If I were you, I wouldn't want to be thier daughter," she said, before jumping on her bed.
"It's not about wanting to be their daughter. It's about finding out where I came from," I explained.
"Don't worry about Rose. Maybe, she'll come around."
"You really think so?"
She shrugged her shoulders. "I want to."
"I mean, I get it. She's a teen mother. And, here I am adding more stress onto her life just by being here."
"That's nothing. Mom offered to raise Lucie for her. We all pitched in when Lucie was just born."
"What happened with the father?"
"He didn't want to be with her anymore," Alice said, grabbing a pillow and squeezing it."
"Was it because she became pregnant?"
"He just didn't want Rose, anymore. He disappeared. Just like my mother."
My eyes bucked. "Your mother?" I chuckled.
"My real mother disappeared when I was really little. We don't know what happened to her. She just vanished. My aunt, Esme, who's my mom now, took me in when her sister went missing. I would return home when she came back, but she never did. So, my aunt and uncle decided to adopt me, so that I wouldn't have to go into the foster care system. My cousins became my siblings."
"That's very admirable of Mr. and Mrs. Cullen."
"Yeah. They're the best."
"I never had any sisters or brothers. It's always been me and Lexie."
"You had school friends, didn't you?"
"Yes, but that's not the same as having siblings. You're really lucky."
"I know I am," She said, somberly.
When darkness cascaded over the mansion, Esme pulled me into Carlisle's office. She offered me a seat, but I decided to stand. The envelopes were still set on his desk, taunting me now.
"There are a few rules I'd like you to follow. You are a guest in our house. Our children must follow the exact same rules. Curfew is 8:30pm. Stay in your room after curfew. Only get up if you have to go to the bathroom. We don't like the pitter- patter of little feet over our heads while we're trying to sleep. Carlisle and I have very hectic work lives and we need our rest. NO talking on the phone after curfew. No talking to each other after curfew. We stay in our beds at night." Esme glared me right in the eyes when she said that last line. It scared me. "When darkness falls, Alaska can get a little scary. And, we just want to protect our children... and you."
"I understand."
"I'm glad."
I looked at the envelopes on the desk. They never been moved or even touched.
"Don't worry about that," Esme said, brushing my cheek, gently, with her hand. We will get that done."
Most of the lights were off through out the mansion. I could here Lucie crying. As I walked to the guest room, I could hear music playing, too. It sounded like somebody was playing a piano or a keyboard. I followed the music. The closer the sound got, the colder the air became. His door was cracked and I took a peek through it. It was Edward. The boy with the red hair. The quiet one. He played beautifully. I usually hate classical music, and cling to auto- tuned voices and computer generated tracks, but something about how he played left me mesmerized. He glanced at me through the corner of his eye, and I gasped. He knew I was there. He never stopped playing. His song was smooth and soft.
Edward's jaw was locked tight. Oddly, it looked like something was holding him down in his chair, something invisible. Then, freakishly, I heard my name being called. I bucked my eyes in horror. It was him! He was calling me, but he never once opened his mouth or unclenched his teeth. I backed away from his door and hit the wall behind me. I fell, and someone had grabbed my arm. I looked up, ready to swing at somebody.
"Bella." It was Rosalie.
I couldn't speak.
"Are you okay? I can hear your heart beating, and its pretty loud," She said.
"I was just-" I got up off the floor. "I was just, um-"
"Don't worry about it. It's 9:30. You better get to bed."
"Yeah..."

Chapter 6 The Stables
in the morning, I felt rested. I never slept in a bed this comfy before. I folded up my comforter just as Carolitta came into my room.
"Miss Ramora, I hope you slept well."
"I did. And, please, call me Bella."
She nodded, "Very well."
I looked at my face in the vanity, and compared my features to Esme's and Carlisle's. I cupped my chin. I could see no resemblance, but Esme and I seem to have the same eyes. That gave me some hope that I wouldn't have to go back to Texas. It was weird having someone make my bed for me and tidy my room. I felt lazy as Carolitta, the Cullen's maid, was doing all the work that I usually do, and without being asked.
"So, when did you start working here?" I asked.
"Oh, I have been with the Cullen's since Edward was born," she replied, fluffing the pillows.
"He's a strange one, isn't he," I said.
"Well, he has been rather odd since his accident."
"What accident?"
"Oh. I don't know if they want me to share this with you. They don't talk about it."
"Oh. I understand. Where are you from?"
"I'm from Ukraine. I migrated here with my daughter, Rusalka. She lived with my sister while I worked at the Cullen's."
"You have a room here? I never see you leave."
"Yes, they were nice enough to let me have my own room in the mansion, so that I can be on call 24/7 and be close to the family."
"Don't you miss your daughter?"
"I see her as often as I can. She's a grown woman now. She has her own life. You are the first company I have seen come through this house in a long time. The Cullens haven't been very sociable people since Edward's accident."
I wanted to know more about that accident, but I knew she wasn't going to give me any details.
"So, what's a girl to do around here?" I asked.
"There's a stable across the pond. Alice can show you how to get there."
"Cool. I love horses."
"The Cullens have plenty of winners."
"They race horses here?" I asked, excited.
"Only the best."
"- Hey, Carolitta. - Good morning, Bella," said Alice.
"Hey."
"Alice, why don't you show Bella to the stables, this morning. I'll be serving brunch at 10."
"Sounds like a plan. -Come on, Bella. I'll get Rose to lend you a pair of her riding boots."
We walked down the hall to Rosalie's room.
"Knock Knock. Hey, Rose," Alice said, quietly. Rosalie was rocking Lucie in her arms. "Bella needs to borrow a pair of riding boots."
Rosalie looked at me. "What's wrong with her own shoes."
"She'll give them back. Come on, Rose. Don't be selfish."
Rosalie paused. "Fine. Look in the closet."
Alice skipped to the closet, but the doors seemed to be locked when she pulled on them.
"The other closet," Rosalie rolled her eyes.
"Yeah. Right."
I tried on Rosalie's riding boots. At first, I was afraid that my feet would be too big, but they fit as if they were my own.
"Wow. We have the same shoe size," I told Rose.
"Don't get use to it," She griped.
"Thanks for being nice, Rose," Alice said. Alice and I bundled up and went outside. The air was misty and chilly. And fragments of snow was falling from the clouds. We passed the wide pond and got to the stables. In Texas, I was always around horses. But, I had a secret. I never rode them. Cautious, I kept my distance. Horses, like most animals, are unpredictable and I always feared that fatal kick.
The horses were gorgeous. Beautiful, large beasts of cocoa brown, jet black, chestnut, pure grey, and lovely patterns- but, my jaw dropped when I saw they had an Appaloosa. My favorite breed. She was white- based, with dark brown spots everywhere. She looked like a tub of cookies n cream ice cream.
"That's Lady Killer. Isn't he nice?" Alice said, brushing the Appaloosa's mane with her hand.
"He's amazing."
"You ride?"
"-um. Not much," I lied.
Alice chuckled. "Ever been on a horse before?"
"Lexie took me to Soto Hill where I had my first pony ride when I was six."
"I meant recently."
"...No," I fessed up.
"That's fine. Jacob can help you. He's the stable boy. Maybe, he's around here, somewhere," she said, looking around. The horse in the stall on the left of Lady Killer was Grand Slam. His name plate was gold. He must be their prized horse. Grand Slam was the solid color of dark chocolate and his coat was smooth and shiny. Someone walked into the stables. It was a guy, walking with his head low. He was dirty and sweaty. He stopped and looked up at me, with scrutiny.
"Who the hell are you?" he chuckled.
"Oh... I'm Bella."
"I'm Jacob."
"- Alice went to look for you."
"She did?" He grabbed the dirty towel from over his shoulder and wiped his face with it.
"She did," I said, enamored by how gorgeous he was.
"-Oh, there you are, Jake. Man, you're dirty."
"All in a night's work," he said.
"How is she?" Alice asked, her face gloom.
"She's coming around. Billy said she got into some poisonous plants. But don't worry. It's cureable."
"My horse, Platinum, got sick a couple of days ago," Alice told me. "Jacob's dad is a vet. He's helping her get better. Platinum is a grey saddlebred. She's the best. And, she's so fast. Bella, you should see her. One day, she's going to shine in the winner's circle."
Jacob looked at Alice, admiringly.
"She is pretty good. But, she'll never win against Thunderbolt's Colt. Now that is a fast horse."
Chapter 7 Encounter
“Thunderbolt’s Colt is a lively fellow,” Alice said, her confidence drifting away.
“But, hey,” Jacob said, throwing his arm around her shoulder, “I’m sure her time will come. Every horse has its day.” That seemed to cheer Alice back up.
“Bella wants to learn how to ride,” Alice said.
“What? No, I never said that.”
“Where are from, anyway?” Jacob asked.
“Texas.”
“Texas? You must be an indoor girl, if you’re from Texas and don’t even know how to ride a horse,” Jacob said.
“I guess you could say that,” I replied.
“Maybe some other time. I have a crapload of work to do, like every day.”
“Maybe tomorrow, then,” said Alice.
“I can’t afford riding lessons, anyway,” I said.
“Let’s go get breakfast, then,” said Alice. “Jake, you hungry?”
“Starved, actually.”
The three of us headed back to the mansion for brunch. I had a bowl of apple cinnamon oatmeal and a carton of orange juice.
I loved watching Jacob eat. He was just a nice, strong guy. He smiled at me a few times throughout brunch.
Rosalie came downstairs with Lucie. She didn’t look happy to see Jacob. She seemed to make him uncomfortable.
“Hi, Jake,” said Rose, in a dull voice.
“Hey, Rose. How are you?” said Jacob.
“We’re fine.”
Rosalie grabbed some brunch for her and Lucie and went back upstairs.
“She’s so cold, these days,” Jacob said.
“Are you guys close?” I asked. “Rose seemed a little defensive around you.”
“We use to date. But, she dumped me for her future baby daddy.”
“Oh wow.”
“Yeah.”
“How long did you guys go out?”
“Two years. Then, this cookie- cutter rich guy comes in and steals her right from under me. Then he leaves her high and dry, and with a baby. That’s karma for yah.”
“You don’t feel bad for her?”
“Why should I? She did the exact same thing to me.”
“Yeah, but she has a baby now.”
“Not my problem. And, not my baby.”
“Did you two love each other?”
“I thought we did. I mean, we both said the words, but I guess her heart wasn’t that into it, if she could leave me so easily for a richer, better- at- everything type of guy, or any guy for that matter.”
“I’m so sorry. I can tell that you had strong feelings for her.”
“I did. But, not anymore. It’s been over for a long time, now.”
“Well, I think it’s stupid what she did. She really lost someone special.”
Jacob blushed. “I’m not that special. I thought what we had in our relationship was special, though. It just wasn’t enough for her, I guess.”
“She lost a great guy.”
‘Thanks, Bella,” he chuckled.
“It’s true.”
“I believe you.”
I slid my hand up and down his arm, feeling his muscular forearm. He froze, but he didn’t seem to mind it at all. “My, your hard!”
“I work out,” he said.
“I can tell.”
He took my hand and placed it on the counter. His hand on top of mine, we looked into each other’s eyes. He leaned forward…
“Alright, everyone. Buffet’s closed,” Carolitta said, walking in, startling us. Jacob stepped back.
“I have to get back to the horses. So… See ya around.”
“Bye,” I said. He didn’t say bye, he just left quickly.
“What’s going on? He looks sprung,” Carolitta grinned.
“Well, nothing happened between us if that’s what you think.”
“I didn’t say anything happened,” Carolitta said. She placed a marble vase of red flowers on the countertop.
Afterwards, I snuck off to Carlisle’s office. Carlisle and Esme were inside, talking. I slowed my pace and stood outside the office. The door was cracked.
“Can you believe this girl?” Carlisle said.
“It’s rather odd, isn’t it? I mean, she must want something, atleast.”
“She wants a free ride is what she wants,” Carlisle said. “I’m going to send Baron off to get the DNA tests done, this afternoon. And as soon as he gets back with those negative results, I’m kicking her out of our house, personally. She can go back to Texas and be with her real family.”
My heart sunk into the pit of my stomach to know how Carlisle truly felt about me. His care and concern was all for show. They were coming out of the office and I ducked into a corner. They walked passed without noticing me there. I went into Carlisle’s office. The envelopes weren’t on the desk, anymore. I panicked. I looked around, and I went through the desk drawers looking for them. When I found them, I took them out. What if I’m really not their daughter?
Just as I was getting comfortable here, I realized all this could easily disappear and it’s back to Texas for me. I thought about Jake. I had to do something if I wanted more time with him.
So, I opened up Esme’s envelope and emptied it. I pricked a strand of hair from my ponytail and put it inside Esme’s envelope. I heard voices down the hall, heading back this way. My heartbeat sped up. I put the envelopes back into the drawer where I found them. I didn’t have time to plant my DNA inside Carlisle’s envelope, but I’m sort of glad that the voices stopped me. I went and hid behind the chair. It was just Esme and Carolitta walking back down the hall. When the coast was clear, I bolted out of there. I stood against the wall, out in the hallway, trying to regulate my breathing. What had I just done? I asked myself. I was shocked. You’re securing your future, a voice told me. It was my own voice.
“No, this is wrong,” I said out loud.
“What’s wrong?”
I looked up, startled. It was Rosalie, holding a quiet Lucie in her arms.
“Nothing,” I smiled. “Nothing’s wrong.”
She stared at me. “I want my boots back if you’re done with them.” Then, she walked away.
Where had my confidence gone? I was so sure that they were my parents. Why would I do such a thing, if I was so sure? The letter was all the proof that I needed. And, I still had it tucked away in the guest room, my new bedroom. And, I will always have it.
Later, Carlisle called Baron into his office. I watched from across the hall. He gave Baron the envelopes and sent him off. Baron gave me a cold smile as he exited the mansion.
I could tell he didn’t trust me, or like me, for that matter. But, like I care about what some old butler thinks…
That night, it was colder than usual. My comforter was comfortable, but it didn’t keep the coolness away. I remembered Esme’s house rules, about pitter- pattering feet and walking around at night, but I had to get up to get an extra blanket.
I stepped out into the dark hallway. I was using my cell phone as a light. I took very light, light steps to the linen closet.
Bella, a voice said my name. I froze, as clearly and surely as I heard it. I even dropped the blanket on the floor, I was so startled. I was more than startled, I was afraid to move. I held up my cell phone to see around me, but I was totally alone.
“Edward,” I whispered.
You shouldn’t be out here, the voice said.
“I can here you,” I said, as my knees buckled from under me. I grabbed up the blanket off the floor, and was about to run down the hall back to my room as fast as I possibly could, until something grabbed me. I was about to scream, until a cold hand was over my mouth.
His golden eyes narrowed and shined in the darkness. I could see them better than I could see anything else. The cell phone slipped from my hand and popped as it hit the hardwood.
His face was an inch away from mine. Edward subtly inhaled, breathing in the scent of my honey bubble bath. My heart was pounding like crazy.
“You shouldn’t be out here,” he said. It was his voice I was hearing. As he spoke those word, my eyes were glued to his pearly, perfectly lined, sharp teeth. I was horrified. Then, a hall light came on, and Edward had vanished.
“Bella?”
I looked for him and only found Carolitta standing beside the light switch, three rooms down the hall. She rushed to me. “I thought I heard voices. What are you doing up?”
“I was just getting an extra blanket. I was cold in my room,” I said, my voice, shaky.
“Bella?... Are you alright?”
“Carolitta, I don’t know. Something…”
“What is it, girl. Spit it out.” Carolitta looked down the dark, empty hallway, and then took me back to my room.
I got under the covers and she laid extra blankets over me.
“Esme said it’s not safe to walk around at night,” I told Carolitta.
“Not safe? Why would she say that?”
“She didn’t say it exactly. But, she insinuated to me that it’s not safe here.”
“Well, she is very overprotective of her children,” Carolitta said.
“No. She meant something much more than that. I wasn’t alone out there in the hall. Edward was with me.”
Carolitta locked eyes with me as soon as I mentioned Edward’s name. “So, you see him, too?”
“See him? What do you mean, Carolitta?”
“Sometimes, I see him. I will wake up in the middle of the night from heat sweats…. And I will see him, standing in the corner of the room, his eyes focused on me. One time, I awoke to him staring at me and he was closer than he had ever been before. I was so scared. I didn’t tell his parents. I didn’t know what to do or, or what to think.”
“Oh, Carolitta. That must have been really scary.”
“It’s not his fault. We must not be afraid of him.”
“What’s not his fault, Carolitta?”
“Lord, forgive our poor child, for he knows not what he does,” Carolitta said to herself, holding on, tightly, to the silver cross around her neck.
“Carolitta?..”
“Go to bed, Bella.”
“No, wait.”
“Sweet dreams, my dear.” She was fearful. I could hear it in her voice. Carolitta left and closed the door behind her. I turned on the lamp and sat up in my bed. How could I manage sweet dreams after that? But, I did dream. But, my dreams felt so real that I couldn’t tell if they were dreams or reality. I was afraid to wake up. I ‘d rather dream. I’d rather he not be real.
