Lie to Me (Final chapter- epilogue part 1 of 2)
The day was cold and there was light snow covering the ground. Lucy and I watched Alice ride Joyful, the new horse Carlisle bought to help Alice forget about Platinum Heart.
Joyful was a Tennessee Walking horse, and a deep brown. He wasn’t Alice’s type. She liked silvers, tans, and grays. She liked slim bodies and long, narrow heads. He was bulky, with a short face. But, he was a good horse, so the small things didn’t matter. She was well enough to ride and did it beautifully.
“You’re getting better, Alice,” I shouted encouragements at her while she trotted in short bursts. She smiled in response, and kept her head focused on Joyful. Lucy was cooing, and sucking her thumb. I sat her down on the ground.
I saw Jacob walking up the road with a helmet. The sight of him put a smile on my face. He hugged me when he reached us.
“I’ll take it from here,” he said. “- You’re doing great, Ally!”
“Thanks,” she shouted at him.
He put his attention back on me. “When will I get to see you out there riding?” he asked, with a playful grin.
“Probably never,” I said, honestly.
“That’s a shame.” He put the helmet on his head and headed for the horse stables. Lucy complained and reached up her hands for me. I was terrified of the horses, but if I ever got the courage to ride one, it would only be for Jacob.
“Alice, I’m going to take Lucy back to the house. You’ll be okay by yourself?”
“I’m not by myself. My riding teacher is here,” she said, trotting into a gallop.
“Right. Jacob.” I picked up Lucy and headed back to the mansion. Rosalie came down the stairs and met us. She wanted Lucy. I hesitated to give her to her. In the back of my mind, she didn’t deserve Lucy.
“What are you waiting on?” Rosalie barked, impatiently.
“Oh. Nothing,” I stammered, nervously. I dropped Lucy into her arms. “Where’s Mom?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
Rosalie turned towards the stairs and she didn’t like me calling Esme mother. “She’s in Dad’s office.” She took a step, then stopped. “She doesn’t want to be disturbed. So, leave her alone.”
“Okay,” I said.
I was starting to accept that Rosalie was never going to like me, no matter how nice I acted towards her. They went upstairs. I went into the dining room where Carolitta was dusting. I lingered and played with Esme’s plants. Carolitta seemed annoyed by my presence.
“All this money the Cullen’s have, and this is how you spend your time?” she asked, wiping down the table in broad circles with a cloth. “Go do something fun.”
“I don’t feel like it,” I said, quite childishly and leaned against the wall.
“I know things have been rocky, lately, for you. But, you’ll pull through,” she said, with a confident smile. I smiled back.
“Always a pleasure, Carolitta,” I said. I went into the halls. Carlisle emerged from the library just as Esme was coming out of his office. They looked like two strangers who had bumped into each other. They didn’t say anything, and went their separate ways. Esme seemed hurt. Carlisle had been deliberately ignoring her. I guess he has nothing to say. I followed Esme into their bedroom.
She sat down infront of the boudoir and pulled out a pink compact. I was standing in the doorway.
“He’s back from the hotel?” I asked, trying to start a conversation. She didn’t respond.
“You should tell him,” I said. “It’s the only way to make things right.”
She didn’t respond. She started doing her make- up. “So this is how we solve problems in this family. Ignore each other until one of us explodes.-“
“It’s the way to make things worse,” she cut me off. “I’ve lied to him for seventeen years. Hell, much longer than that. I hardly remember all the things I did. I tried very hard to forget. Soon, the memories vanished like they never happened, and it became like I wasn’t lying at all. How can I be dishonest when I have no memory of the lies, of the things I did?”
“At least you’re talking about it,” I said. “But, you’re talking about it to the wrong person.”
She paused and studied her face in the mirror. “Come here,” she ordered. I hesitated at first. I stepped into the room, cautiously, slowly. Esme grinned. “I’m not a snake. I won’t bite you. I’m your mother.”
To hear those words ‘I’m your mother’ roll off Esme’s tongue was shocking. I literally paused, mouth gaped open. She laughed. “I may not be the saint of all mothers…”
“You don’t have to be. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone gets into trouble.”
I sounded nervous. I took the little white chair that was holding her closet door open and placed it beside her, in front of the mirror, and sat down.
We stared at our reflections.
“You’ve got that boyish Cullen chin,” she said.
“Carlisle thinks you and I look alike,” I reminded her. Her lips slid into a straight line when I brought him up, so I wasn’t going to do that again.
“I realize I owe you an apology,” she said, stiffly. “I knew all along that you were mine. I knew when I first saw you. It’s behind your eyes. Something about you told me. But, I knew it would ruin things, so I had to be cold. It’s my fault. I should have known secrets don’t stay hidden forever.”
“So, you’re only sorry because you got caught is what you’re saying.”
“No, Bella. Well, yes. But, if I wasn’t married to Carlisle Cullen and if I wasn’t the mother of his children, I would have loved to have gotten to know you. That would have been the first thing on my mind. I’m really trying here, very hard.”
“You accept me as your daughter, your real blood daughter?”
“Yes.”
“You know that’s all I wanted. It’s why I came. Maybe, I can let all the extra stuff go just knowing that you love me and want me.”
“Now, now. Let’s not get mushy.” She pulled out a tube of bright red lipstick and grabbed my jaw. “This is my favorite shade. It’s called Jessica Rabbit Red. When the company discontinued it, Carlisle had them make more just for me. Isn’t he a sweet husband?”
I giggled. “Yes.”
She traced my lips with the lipstick, carefully. When she was done, I looked in the mirror. I was mortified. Red was not my color. Embarrassed, I reached for a Kleenex from the box at the edge of the dresser.
“Red is a tough color,” Esme said. “You need a truck load of confidence to pull it off. I think it looks fresh on you.”
I paused. “Really?” I took a second look. “I look okay, I guess.”
She rolled her eyes. “Why are teenagers so damn self- conscious?”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“Mom?” We turned our heads. It was Rosalie. “Oh. I see you’re busy.”
“No, I’m not,” she said. “Come in.”
Rosalie came in the room. I held my breath. “Why are you wearing Mom’s lipstick?”
I wiped my lips with the Kleenex.
“Because I put it on her,” Esme said, sternly.
“Where’s Lucy?” I asked.
“She’s taking a nap,” Rosalie said, as if it were none of my business. Esme reached for Rosalie’s face.
“Look at my girls,” she said. “Fraternal twins.”
Rosalie pretended that she was about to vomit.
“I wish you could get along. Would make things easier,” Esme said.
“Mom?” Rosalie asked, her voice cracked.
“Yes?”
“When you cheated on Dad, did you get pregnant?”
Esme’s face had frozen. I held my breath, again. Rosalie waited for an answer. Esme pirced her lips and blew. Her expression was sincerely apologetic.
“You did, you did get pregnant,” Rosalie said. She turned on me. “-And you knew and you didn’t say anything.”
“I knew?”
“Uncle Clint could be my real father. She told you and you didn’t tell me,” Rosalie said. “Twins my ass!”
“Rosalie!” Esme scolded.
“It wasn’t my secret to tell,” I said.
She looked at Esme. “How could you trust her over me? She’s practically a stranger. I’m your daughter!”
“You both are my daughters!” Esme said. “This whole feud thing you two have got going needs to stop. I’m getting headaches because of you.”
No one said anything for a moment.
“Are you going to tell Dad?” Rosalie asked. Esme didn’t answer. “He’s going to hate you forever.”
“Rose,” Esme said, with a soft glare. Rosalie walked out of the room. I huffed.
“Don’t worry about it,” I said.
“I have to. I have to worry about it,” Esme said. “I need a moment alone.” She pushed me towards the door and rushed me outside. She closed the door and I was standing in the hallway, alone.
At lunch, everyone was at the table, even Edward. We were having veggie burgers and fries.
“You never eat anything,” Rosalie said, annoyed. She was talking to Edward. He just smiled and sat back in his seat. “Just try it.”
He shook his head. “You know I can’t.”
“Try it,” Alice begged. Rosalie was glad to have Alice on her side.
“You don’t have to listen to them,” Carlisle said.
“Yes, I do,” Edward caved. He picked up the burger and studied it like it was some odd, foreign thing. He parted his lips and opened his mouth. I stared, wide- eyed, at the sharp edges of his teeth. He bit down and chewed, slowly. Then, he coughed and choked. Rosalie laughed under her breath. Esme passed him some napkins. Alice laughed out loud.
“Okay. That’s enough,” Carlisle said, putting more napkins on Edward’s place mat. He spit the food out onto a napkin and put it on the plate.
“Emmett hated veggie night,” Alice said. Then, it got really quiet. All the smiles had fallen away.
“Emmett hated anything that was actually good for him,” Rosalie mumbled, breaking the silence.
After dinner, Alice gave me a note.
“It’s from Jacob.” She grinned at me. “I think he likes you.”
I read the note and it said to meet him at the stables, tonight. If wanted to go, I would have to sneak out and break house rules. Rosalie had overheard our conversation and was jealous.
I went into my room and played with my hair.
“He doesn’t care what you look like.”
I turned around and it was Rosalie.
“Oh. Hi. I didn’t see you,” I said, sliding my styling products back down into the drawer.
“He likes tough girls, girls who can challenge him,” she said.
“Thanks for the advice, but why are you talking to me?”
“Mom is right. The fighting is getting old and it’s exhausting. But, I’m still not happy about any of this.”
“Well, neither am I. None of us are.”
“Just be natural, okay?” she said. I nodded. And then she left.
I waited until everyone was asleep before I made my move. I crept down the stairs in a puffy coat and boots. When I made it to the door, I was having second thoughts. Vampires roamed the night, and there was no guarantee that I wouldn’t get snatched. I wondered how Jacob was protecting himself.
“Going somewhere?” The sudden voice made me jump out of my skin.
“Edward, you scared me,” I said, as I turned to see him leaning against the wall, his hands inside his twilled trouser pockets.
“Sorry.”
“I kind of have a date,” I said.
He laughed. “I think you may need a chaperone.”
I smiled. “I think you’re right.”
“Let’s go.”
Later, as we made our way through the thick cold air, I could feel that we were being watched. I would see pairs of eyes glowing from beyond the woods. Jacob was outside the riding circle, dressed in a thick red coat. I was glad we didn’t have much farther to go.
“Edward,” Jacob said, with mock surprise. “What are you doing here?”
“Protecting me from blood thirsty vampires,” I answered for him, playfully. They both looked at me like I was insane. “What?”
“That would be funny, if vampires didn’t actually exist,” Jacob said.
“I’ll leave you to your date,” Edward said. He backed away, but he didn’t go far. He stayed where we could see him and he could see us. But, I knew he could still hear everything that we would say.
“Date?” Jacob asked. I blushed.
“What do you want to call it, then?”
“Date’s fine.”
“Does this mean we’re dating?”
“Um,” he said, blushing. “Do you want to date me?”
He caught me off guard. I wanted to say yes, but I was too shy to say it. I nodded, instead. He laughed. We were interrupted by loud horses, neighing. Jacob shook his head.
“Must be a party going on in there,” he said.
“Do they ever sleep?”
“Their sleep patterns are very different from people’s,” he said. “I know it’s cold, but do you want to go for a midnight ride?” I knew he was hoping I would say yes. I bit my lip and nodded. We headed to the stables. The horses were louder, and something felt off.
“Are they okay in there? Are they always like this at night?” I asked.
Jacob looked confused. “Something’s not right. They sound scared.” He broke through the stable doors, and I was right beside him.
“Woah!” I had slipped and landed on my back. Jacob looked mortified. He was looking down at me and he was shaking. “What is it?” I asked. I looked at my palms. They were painted in blood. I had slipped in it. I started to convulse. I was sitting in blood. Looking up, it was everywhere. Horses had it on their faces. Some of the horses had stopped neighing. But, they were all uneasy and clearly terrified, pacing around inside their stalls, eyes bugging out.
Jacob helped me up. And an eerie sound caught our attention. A shadow at the back of the stable look like a giant wing as the moonlight revealed it to us.
We walked slowly towards it. Something was back there, inside a horse’s stall. When we reached it, I had to look away. Jacob yelled out for help. We didn’t know what it was at first. It was a level three vampire feeding on one of the Cullen’s horses. Its teeth were like nothing I had ever seen. They were rows and rows of pointed fangs, like shark teeth, but bigger. Its eyes were black and empty. It had thick, rubbery looking gray skin with black dots which were probably just moles. It screamed when it saw us.
We stood back. All the frightened horses started up again. The monster rose itself up to the ceiling and stared down at us.
“Let the horses out!” Jacob said. We unlocked all the stalls as fast as we could. Horses crammed the walkway, trying to get out, squishing us. They pushed through and only two could pass through the stable doors at a time. The monster was drooling, blood dripping from its chin. Jacob grabbed a gun from the tack room. It was under the floorboard.
“Why the heck is there a gun here?” I screamed.
“It’s only used to put down sick horses that can’t be helped,” he said, quickly.
“You can’t kill that thing. It’ll kill you. It’ll kill us both.”
“It’s all we got!” he yelled.
He went out and pointed the gun up at the monster. It shrieked loudly, and I covered my ears. Jacob’s arms were shaking and I don’t think he was holding the gun right.
“Steady,” I said.
“I’m trying.”
Edward came up behind us. He grabbed the gun and pushed Jacob into a stall.
“What the hell!” Jacob said.
“What are you doing?” I screamed. “We have to kill that thing!”
“No. We can’t,” Edward said. Its hands and feet were stuck to the ceiling like suction cups. “He’s our brother. It’s Emmett.”
I didn’t know what to think or how to respond. But, I picked up the gun and pointed it at the monster.
“No!” Edward shouted. We were fighting over the gun. Jacob came and helped me. It was us against Edward. “I don’t want to have to hurt either of you.”
“Then, let go,” I begged.
“She’s right. Look at him. He’s not Emmett anymore. He’s a monster,” Jacob said. Edward growled at him, showing his teeth.
“Holy sh- You’re one of them!?” Jacob said, having a realization. He got up and ran out of the stables.
“Jake, where are you going?” I yelled. “Come back and help me! We have to protect the horses!”
Edward grabbed me and covered my mouth. “The horses are fine,” he said. “They’ve all escaped. Now, stop squirming, so he can’t know you’re here. All level three vampires are blind. But, their other senses are heightened, incredibly. So, don’t move a muscle.”
It was impossible not to move. I was sure my heart was about to jump out of my chest. And I knew that the monster- I mean Emmett- could hear it.

Tense situation!

Lie to Me (finale)
Edward’s hand muffled my voice as the creature stalked towards us. His other hand reached out as if he was trying to touch it. Emmett didn’t have a nose, but two flat holes on his face. I couldn’t believe that this was my brother. His teeth were like that of a shark’s. He could hear my heart beating and I was terrified. I didn’t trust Edward enough to protect me and so I spun out of his grip and bolted for the stable doors.
“Bella!” he yelled after me, but I didn’t stop running. “Bella, come back!”
Some of the horses were scattered all over the grass. Some were missing; must have taken off down the road or into the woods. I cut through the woods to get to the mansion. Where the hell are you when I need you, Jasper? I thought out loud. I banged on the door.
“Help!” I banged some more. “Help! Somebody, help me, please!” I was near to tears. The door finally opened and it was Carlisle back from the hotel. I was surprised to see him. He took one look at me and it instantly felt like he knew what was wrong. I saw Esme through the door. Her miserable expression told me that she had finally given up her secret.
“Emmett,” I said. His eyes watered. He grabbed a coat from the rack and came outside and shut the door.
“Lead the way,” Carlisle said. I really didn’t want to go back there, but I took a deep breath and lead Carlisle to the stables.
“He scared away the horses,” I said. I turned and looked at Carlisle before opening the gate. “He’s not the same.”
“I don’t care. I want to see my son,” he said. I nodded and unlocked the gate. He reached the stables before me, in a rush. I burst through the stable doors to see Carlisle frozen, standing over Edward who was standing over Emmett. Emmett was laid out on the ground, being subdued by Edward’s strong arms. Edward turned his head, red tears streaming down his chiseled sorrowful face. Emmett shrieked, and the noise pierced my eardrums.
“I’m so sorry, dad,” Edward said, his voice cracking. “For all the pain I caused. I did this.”
Carlisle shook his head. “No.”
“It has to end, now. We can’t live like this. He can’t live like this. I’ve been keeping him alive because I love him and you all love him. But it’s not good for any of us or him.”
“Edward-“
“I did this to him!” Edward shouted. “I have to end it. He’s in misery and pain. I can feel it every time I see him. And it breaks my heart.”
Carlisle was stunned, but for some reason he was moving closer to them.
“Don’t,” I said, reaching for his arm. But it slipped away from me. I moved back towards the stable doors, watching my step from the slippery, bloody wooden floor.
“Aren’t you going to say something?” Edward yelled.
“I don’t know what to say,” Carlisle said, his voice was almost a whisper.
“I tried to tell you so many times, but-“ Edward stopped.
“I know you did. Edward, you weren’t yourself. This wasn’t you that did this to Emmett. It was the monster inside you. You overcame that monster. That’s not who you are anymore,” Carlisle said. Emmett was struggling against Edward’s grip. I was on edge, waiting for Edward’s grip to break at any moment.
“He’s thirsty, dad. He wants blood,” Edward said. “He killed Alice’s horse. I knew and I didn’t say anything.”
“It’s okay,” Carlisle said. “We can fix all of this.”
“No, we can’t,” Edward countered. “Don’t you see, he has to die!”
“He’s right,” I said. “If we don’t kill him, he’s never going to stop killing. He’s too far gone.”
We waited for Carlisle’s response. We were waiting for permission to destroy his son. Emmett’s eyes were black and empty as Carlisle studied him, looking for any salvageable part of him. But, there was none. There was nothing left of him that was good. He was a monster. Carlisle turned his head away, pained. A tear rolled down his face.
“Kill him,” Carlisle breathed. Emmett growled. Edward leaned down to wrap Emmett’s arms behind his back. Emmett kicked his legs up. As he came off the floor, he head but Edward’s forehead. I heard a crack, which had to be Edward’s skull. Edward crashed into one of the horses’ stalls. Emmett directed his body to our direction, sensing our body heat.
“Run!” I screamed. Carlisle and I ran outside. He was older and slower and I was easily leaving him behind. I couldn’t stop running though. I looked back once and could see Carlisle running behind me. I sighed, relieved. I ran into a tree, wrapping myself around it. He caught up to me. We both needed to catch a breath.
“He can’t kill Emmett by himself,” I said. “He’ll die trying.”
“We have to get out of here,” Carlisle said, looking around in the dark. We raced to the mansion. Once inside, we locked the doors.
“What’s going on?” Esme said. Rosalie, Alice, Estelle, and Carolitta were huddled together in the living room.
“Did we interrupt something?” I asked.
“Actually, you interrupted something,” Rosalie said. “Before you took off with Carlisle.”
“Mom and Dad were having a fight,” Alice said. Estelle gave her a side glance, devastated that she still sees Esme and Carlisle as her parents. She looked defeated, like she wanted to just pack up and leave and return to her rich fiance.
“That doesn’t matter right now,” Carlisle broke in. “Edward and Emmett are in the stables.”
“Emmett?” Esme asked. Her eyes suddenly bucked.
“Our boys are in trouble,” he said. There was a banging on the door that made us all jump out of our skin. I looked through the peep hole and sighed.
“It’s Jacob and Jasper,” I said, excitedly.
“Who’s Jasper?” Rosalie asked. I let them in.
“Hi,” Jasper said. “I heard you got a level 3 vampire problem.”
I hugged him, not knowing what else to do in that moment.
“It must have seemed like I abandoned you,” Jacob said.
“It’s fine. You were scared,” I said.
“ I found a fledgling,” Jacob said.
“Thank you,” I said.
“What do we do?” Carlisle asked. “How do we kill it?”
Esme was horrified at Carlisle’s words. She looked at him with defiance and hurt. “No,” she shrieked. “You’re not going to kill my baby boy!”
“He’s not our son, anymore, Esme,” Carlisle said. “I have seen him. This is right.”
“No!” she shouted. In an emotional rage, she started beating on Carlisle with her little fists. He blocked most of the hits with his forearm. Jacob grabbed Esme by the waist and pulled her away from him. He sat her down in a chair.
“To answer your question, Dr. Cullen,” Jasper said. “TNT.”
“TN what?” Rosalie said.
“Dynamite,” Jasper said. “It’s the only thing that works. We have to lure him out and blow him up.”
Esme cried in her hands. Jasper looked around at the family.
“Let’s go help Edward,” he said, but he was only talking to Jacob. He pushed me back when I tried to follow. I stared at him.
“After all we’ve been through,” I said. Jacob’s jaw tightened and I ignored him.
“I just don’t want to risk you dying,” Jasper said, dry.
“He’s right. You should stay behind. It’s for the best. We’ll get some dynamite and set a trap,” Jacob said.
“I’m just supposed to sit here and wait?” I asked, rhetorical.
“Yes,” They said, simultaneously. They left, but before the door shut, Jacob turned back and pressed his lips on mine in a little kiss. His expression was lost when he pulled away. He knew he might die trying to kill that thing. He wasn’t a vampire and didn’t possess the type of strength that Edward and Jasper had.
“Best of luck,” Carlisle said to them. And they were gone. The room fell quiet. I could tell there had been arguing. The glass lamp was on the floor in pieces. Of course, it was expensive and now, a waste of money. I felt I had the right to ask, “So, what was the fight about?”
“Mom had an affair with Uncle Clint,” Rosalie said. “The truth is official now. We might not even be twins, Bella, just two sisters with different daddies.”
“Rose,” Estelle and Carolitta tried to shut her up. I looked over at Esme, sitting in the chair. She looked ashamed and lost. Carlisle seemed detached and distant, even more than before. I almost wanted him to comfort her, but I understood why he didn’t.
Carlisle caught me staring at him. “I want you girls to get to bed,” he said.
“I want to stay up and wait for Edward, Jacob, Emmett and Jasper,” Alice said.
“Emmett is not coming home,” he said, his voice as gentle as he could manage. Soon, everyone was in a different part of the mansion, divided up and avoiding each other. I found Esme in the kitchen, drinking her sorrows. I didn’t mean to find her. I just wanted a snack. I sighed and opened a cabinet, pulling down a bag of chips and a hot cocoa packet.
“He knows,” Esme said, sitting at the counter.
“I know. It was brave of you to come clean and tell the truth,” I said, at an attempt to be encouraging. “This will all blow over, soon.”
She chuckled, nervously. “He’s kicking us out.”
I paused. “What?”
“He wants me gone.” She turned around in her chair to face me, fully. “He doesn’t want us.”
A thick sickness clouded my chest. I wanted to vomit. “But, the DNA test said- And Rosalie-“
“Stop it, Bella. It’s over. That stupid test doesn’t matter to him. He has known Rose all her life, he only just met you. Rose is his real daughter in his eyes. You-“ She walked me into a corner. “You are a devil. You brought a plague upon this family,” she cried. “You tore it apart. You ruined everything I worked so hard for.”
“No. You did that, Mom,” I said, through the sickness I was feeling. She stopped, as something clicked inside her mind. “The lies you tell, you let them become your truth. They ruined you, Mom. Your lies did. Not me.” I ducked out of there and went to my room. I started packing everything I brought to this place. I heard someone at the door. It was Alice. She didn’t say anything, just stood there.
“What do you want?” I asked, trying to sound normal, like I hadn’t been crying.
“Are you going back to Texas?” she asked.
“Got nowhere else to go,” I responded.
“Don’t you want to see Edward and Jacob before you go?”
I laughed. “I’m only packing. I’m not driving, not tonight. When the sun comes up, I’m out of here.”
“I’m going to miss you. You’re a much better sister than Rose,” she said. I knew she was joking, but I couldn’t help feeling protective.
“Don’t say that. Rose is a great sister.”
Alice gave me a blank stare. “I guess so,” she said, nonchalant. She came inside the room and shut the door. “You’re not the only one that’s leaving,” she whispered. Interested, I paused what I was doing and looked at her. Alice plopped on the bed. “Estelle and I are sneaking out, tomorrow night. We’re going to meet her fiancé- my new daddy- in Paris.”
“Why do you have to sneak anywhere? Estelle is your real mom.”
“Doesn’t matter. Estelle is an unfit parent and by law, I’m better off with Mom and- I mean Aunt Esme and Uncle Carlisle. Uncle Carlisle says Estelle has to be gone by Saturday or else he’s slapping her with a restraining order.”
“That doesn’t sound like Carlisle. He’s just heated right now.”
“He sounded serious.”
“He’ll change his mind,” I said, hopefully.
“I hope so, too,” she said, moving a stray strand of my hair from my face. She looked like she knew I wasn’t just talking about Estelle.
“He must be feeling so betrayed and heartbroken,” I thought out loud.
“Must be,” she said.
“Get to bed, now. It’s going to be a long day, tomorrow,” I said, patting her on the shoulder.
“It’s going to be a long night. How can anyone sleep on this night?” she fussed. I walked her to the door.
“Try,” I said, putting her out.
After I packed, I set everything up against the closet door. I changed into a thicker jacket and crawled out my bedroom window. There was no way in hell I was just going to ‘sit and wait’.

Lie to Me finale
I slid down the tiles on the roof of the second floor and had to crawl down to the ceiling on the first floor. I was finally dangling from a window sill, ready to jump to the ground when I heard a “psst”. It scared me and I fell prematurely, landing hard on my butt.
“Ow.” I covered my mouth. I got up and wiped snow off the back of my jeans. I looked around, hectic. I saw a polished, black boot sticking out from behind a tree. Rosalie’s riding boot.
“Rose,” I said, in a scolding voice. I nearly sounded like Esme. She leaned out from the tree, a light pink cashmere snowcap on her blonde head. “What the heck ?”
“I knew you wouldn’t stay put,” she said, shaking her head.
“Why are you out here?”
“Same reason you are. I knew you’d do this, so I figured I may as well wait for you and not go alone,” she said.
“You’re scared?”
“Of course I’m scared,” she said. We huddled closely from the cold. “I just really want to see him.”
When I didn’t respond, she bumped my shoulder. “What?”
“He’s not like Edward,” I said. “He’s different. Real different.”
“He’s a vampire,” she shrugged.
“He’s not the same person.”
“How would you know? You’ve never seen him, never known him a day in your poor, pathetic life,” she snapped. “I want to see my brother.” Rosalie walked away, walking ahead of me. This was very dangerous, but I couldn’t stop her. I couldn’t even stop myself.
I kept looking every which way, since Rosalie clearly didn’t give a rats about vampires lurking, stalking. She kept straight for the stables. When I realized where she was heading, I stopped. Rosalie stopped next, and looked back at me. I was frozen.
“I’m not going back in there,” I said, remembering all the blood, the scared horses… and Emmett.
She shook her head. “Wuss.”
“Rose, don’t.” But she ignored me and disappeared behind the stable doors. She came back out quickly with a petrified face.
“It’s empty,” she said.
I was relieved to hear that, but I didn’t let it show. I tried to think of where they might set the trap for Emmett. Rose and I heard a moan coming from the stables. We looked at each other, then ran inside. I stopped when I saw the blood everywhere. Rosalie pushed me forward. We looked inside each stall until Rosalie found Edward in one, covered in bloody, sticky hay. We uncovered him, taking big handfuls of hay away from his body.
“Where’d he go?” I asked. Edward groaned. “Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine,” he said, with a grizzly voice. Rosalie grabbed him up in a tight hug. She was shivering and a tear fell down her icy cheek. “I’m alright, Rose.”
She finally let go. “He didn’t kill me.”
“Of course he didn’t. You’re his big brother,” Rosalie said. “Come on. Let’s go find him.”
“Rose,” Edward said, getting her hand.
“What.”
“Emmett isn’t Emmett anymore,” he said. “A lot of lives will be lost, if we don’t destroy him.”
Rosalie allowed that to sink in.
Edward, Rosalie, and I tracked through the snow, which was thicker tonight. I told him what Jasper and Jacob were up to and he decided we should catch up to them, which was my plan anyway. I didn’t know where to start looking and didn’t know these woods as well as Edward. We stuck to him like glue.
A strange howling stop us dead in our tracks. My hairs stood on end at the familiar sound.
“It’s Emmett,” Edward said. We followed the direction from which it came, to a little wooden barn. Through the poorly laid planks we could see Emmett feeling his surroundings. We could also see a pile of dynamite and Jasper and Jacob being still and quiet next to the pile.
Rosalie wanted a closer look and she tripped over a fallen branch to get it, also knocking me over in the process. Emmett roared. Edward grabbed Rosalie’s hand, helping her up. I ran into the barn to close the door to make sure he wouldn’t come after us and couldn’t leave the trap.
I stopped cold in front of monster Emmett. He towered over me with giant grey wings.
“Bella, get out of here!” Jacob yelled. Emmett turned his head to the sound of Jacob’s voice. I closed the barn door and locked it. Then, I wondered how Jake and Jasper going to get out? My heart beat so fast. I could hear them lighting the wicks. I could hear the hissing.
“Let’s get out of here,” I said, once Edward and Rose were in my sight.
“We can’t leave them,” Rosalie said. Edward could feel it coming, too. He grabbed Rosalie and we raced as far away from the barn as we could. When the blast went off, I went flying into a treetop. I had passed out in the tree. When I woke up, I could see Edward and Rosalie on the snow, miles from each other. They were both laying face down, not moving. I wiggled until I fell out of the tree. I ran to Rosalie first.
“Rose!” I screamed. I turned her over on her back. I didn’t know what to do. I started to try to give her CPR, then she woke up coughing. I hugged her, happy that she was alive. Edward groaned and we went to check on him.
“All limbs in tacked,” I said.
“Great,” he said.
“What about them?” Rosalie looked off.
“There’s no way they survived that,” Edward said. We walked back to the barn. All three of us were limping, and hurting somewhere on our bodies. Rose had pain shooting up her left leg and a dislocated shoulder that Edward popped back into place for her. We entered the barn. Dirt and smoke were thick in the air. Pieces of the level 3 vampire were scattered all over, on the ceiling’s planks, the creaky floorboards, and the walls. The smell was disgusting. There was no sign of Jasper or Jacob. I dropped to my knees, devastated.
“This place is just one room,” Edward said. He noticed a square shape in the floor, which turned out to be a door. He pulled it open by the latch. We looked down and saw Jacob and Jasper deep down below.
“It’s a bomb shelter,” Edward chuckled. Jacob and Jasper climbed up the planks that were set into the walls like a latter. When their heads finally popped up, I grabbed Jacob’s face and crushed it with my lips.
“I’m so glad you’re alive,” I said. “Both of you.”
We walked outside to the sun setting.
“I better get going,” Jasper said. He pecked my cheek with a kiss. The cold touch gave me the chills.
“See you around, Jasper,” I smiled. He waved everyone goodbye and trekked off into the woods.
“Who was that guy?” Rosalie asked.
“Just a really good friend,” I said.
“We should get going, too,” Edward said. Rose and Edward headed for home. I stayed with Jacob for a little while.
“How did you know about this place?” I asked.
“My grandfather built it, years ago, when he found out that the vampires were real. He built lots of little shelters for people to hide in, throughout the town. He had a lot of help though from fledglings… like Jasper.”
“Jasper. Really?”
“Jasper is probably older than my grandfather or at least around the same age,” he said.
“That’s really cool… and very helpful. He saved our lives.”
A hawk cackled and we looked up at it perched on a branch watching us.
“That’s Leah,” he said. “I better get home, now.”
“Okay.” We walked in different directions. I didn’t think to tell him I was leaving. It would hurt us both. I wondered if disappearing without saying anything would hurt more. I wondered if I would ever see him again, knowing what today held. I caught up with Rosalie and Edward.
It was 9 am when we reached the mansion. Breakfast would be in process. We walked in and the place seemed pretty busy. Lucy was in her high chair, set at the table with oatmeal in front of her. Esme popped out of the kitchen and embraced Edward in a long hug.
“Sit down,” she ordered. “Carolitta has made breakfast for us.”
Rosalie and I did what we were told. Edward wandered off to his room. I noticed the travel bags set on the floor by the front door and I tried to ignore them. They were Esme’s luggage. Alice and Estelle sat next to each other at breakfast, quiet.
It was really over. This family was breaking apart, literally. There was someone missing from the table, someone who is usually there. I wanted to ask Esme where was he. I got my answer as Carlisle came down the staircase. His slow, concentrated steps caused the room to still. It was so quiet. We all wondered what was he thinking. He sat down to breakfast, right next to me and Rosalie. Carolitta set a glass of orange juice in front of him, beside his plate. He thanked her and didn’t speak again.
No one did.
After breakfast, Esme hugged all of us and went for the luggage at the door. Rosalie looked angry and wanted Carlisle to do something. Maybe stop her.
“I guess I’ll be on my way, too” I said. I got up from the table.
“Wait,” Carlisle said. I paused and rammed into the table, clumsily. “Esme, stop.” He put his napkin on the table and went to her. He took her hands and she turned away, painfully.
“No,” she said. “This is what I deserve.” Carlisle shook his head. “This is what you want.”
“No,” he said. “It’s not. I wasn’t thinking clearly, I was so angry. I’m still not thinking clearly, but I know I don’t want you to go anywhere. I don’t want you to leave me.”
“I’d never leave you.”
“That… thing with Clint, it was a long time ago.”
Esme nodded, agreeing desperately. “I only love you,” she said.
“And I love you,” he responded. “And I love our daughters.”
A lump got stuck in my throat.
“But, don’t you want to know-“
“I don’t want any more DNA tests,” he said, cutting her off. “Rosalie is mine. Bella is mine.” Esme sniffed. He looked her dead between the eyes. “You are mine.”
They embraced which caused a chain reaction as we all got up and huddled around them.
“What about me?” Alice asked. He looked down at her. Estelle pulled her close.
“If you want to go live with Estelle, I won’t try to stop you,” he told her. “But, the laws says-“
“Then, we’ll go to court and change it,” Estelle broke in. “I want my daughter back.”
Carlisle nodded, understanding. He looked at me. “We lost one child, and found another,” he said.
I couldn’t hold them in anymore. I burst out in tears and cried on his crisp, black suit.

Epilogue
I took a deep breath and slipped my feet into the boots. A panicky feeling overcame me. I got off the ground and turned around. Jacob held the brown helmet out to me. Alice and Rosalie were giggling. They can’t wait to see me fall on my bum. I took the helmet, reluctantly.
“You’ll do fine.” Jacob slapped my shoulder. He led the way into the riding circle. Alice hopped up on Bronte, a new sleak , black horse that Jacob brought over from his family’s farm. Breed unknown. Rosalie rode SilverLining, a stunning, tall grey Arabian mare with white tail and mane.
I was given Ronin, a solid chestnut Thoroughbred colt, who seemed stable enough. I slid my boot into a stirrup and swung my other leg around Ronin with Jacob’s help. My butt planted in the saddle, I held the reins tightly as if they were my lifeline. Rosalie and Alice watched with anticipation.
“Calmly, Bella,” Jacob instructed. “He can feel your every emotion. You got to be strong, so he can be strong and confident.”
“Yeah well, I’m freaking terrified right now,” I said. Ronin neighed loudly, which freaked me out right away. He kicked up his front legs and bucked his butt. I screamed and went flying into Alice and her horse. Bronte spooked and raced around in circles with Alice on his back, hanging on for dear life. “Woah!” she yelled. Bronte stopped short and clean. I was relieved that Alice stayed in the seat and didn’t go flying over his head.
“HA!” Rosalie threw her head back with laughter. She trotted around Ronin who was in the middle of the circle being stubborn. “Good luck, Jake. She needs a lot of work. I knew you’d be no competition.”
“Don’t be a snot,” Alice retorted.
“What? Truth hurts,” Rosalie said. I started to say something, something to hurt her feelings, until she smiled at me and I realized… she was just telling the truth.
SilverLining stopped in front of me and Rosalie reached for my hand. I took it and pulled myself up. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll help you get better,” Rosalie said.
“She’s right. We’ll all help,” Jacob said. He was way too excited about this. “You’ve got potential… somewhere. We just have to bring it to the surface.”
“Jake, don’t get any funny ideas,” I said. “I said I’d try and that’s as far as I’m taking it. No shows or comps for me. One champion in the family is enough.” I looked back at Rose and she seemed to agree with me.
“Fine. Whatever. Just get back on the horse,” he said.
“Okay.” I stroked Ronin’s long, perfect face. “I will cherish you forever,” I told him. Ronin was young and beautiful, but what made me love him more was that he was a gift from both of my parents. ;)

At last their family could be reunited!  Sad about Emmet, though.  Luckily Jacob and Jasper had a very clever plan!  Good ending.
