Chapter 1 The Letter

It's not easy growing up poor and not having what other kids have. It's not easy, when you're young, to see other kids holding their father's hand and knowing that you'll never have that. All I ever wanted was a dad. Ever since I received the letter from my mom which made me think I had one, all along. I was seven years old. I just got back inside from swinging from the tire swing in our neighbor's backyard. My mom, Lexie, sat me down on the loveseat and handed me a little folded up note. I didn't know what to expect. I was a little scared of what could be inside the note because Lexie had tears in her eyes. Lexie was a tough woman, so it always made me nervous to see her shaken up. She handed me the note. I opened and read it:

If times ever get too tough for you, my dear sweet girl, and I am not around to help, 487 Beaumon

Juneau, Alaska

Ask for your dad.

And here I sit now, in my light blue cadillac that I dug up from an auto graveyard and brought back to life, reading that very letter over and over again. Tears drip from my eyes as I sit outside the Cullen property, contemplating. I can't seem to find the courage I need to get out and go up to the gate. This is not how Lexie raised me. I am not a wuss. But, I'm sittig here, crying inside my car. I've been through all the 'what ifs' in my head and I have decided that it's worth being turned away, it's worth being embarassed. It's worth knowing I gave it my everything.

My dad could be in there, I think to myself, staring out at the huge house. I traveled all the way from Houston, Texas to this cold, dingy Alaskan property. The least I could do is open my car door.

Chapter 2 Arrival

I’m not use to this kind of cold. I feel like I could get frost bitten any minute now, just by sitting here. It’s now or never. I open the door and get out. My bubble coat is in the trunk of the car. I put it on over my knitted sweater and begin the journey to the rest of my life. When I reach the gate, I’m instructed to say my name into a speaker phone. The gates open and I’m invited to walk up to the front door. The big, brass doors have gold lions as doorknobs.
The doors open and there is a penguin on the other side. Actually, it’s a guy dressed in a black and white tuxedo. He cleared his throat.
“May I help you?” He asked. He looked me up and down with scrutiny as if I looked out of place, as if I didn’t belong here.
“I’m Bella Ramora. I spoke to someone on the intercom. They said I could walk up to the door.”
“Oh, yes….” He cleared his throat a second time. “Come in.”
He let me through to the foyer, which was quite pretty. It was decorated with red and magenta tulips. And a matching three-seated couch, hung like a swing-set, set in the air, just a couple of feet off the ground.
“Who are you here to see?” He asked. “I’m Baron, by the way.”
“Hi, Baron. Nice to meet you,” I smiled. I felt nervous, as if I were about to face a crowd of people as the star in my first ever broadway show. It was a good nervous. I was excited. Baron was waiting for me to continue.
“Oh. Um. I’m here to meet my mother and father.”
Baron’s eyebrows shot up. “Your mother and father?”
“Yes,” I replied.
“Mr. and Mrs.Cullen?”
I didn’t know their names until I read the mailbox when I first arrived. All I knew of them was their address and that Mr. Cullen must be my dad and Mrs. Cullen must be my biological mother. Lexie raised me, but I always knew she wasn’t my birth mother. She always made sure I knew I had another family out there. We never kept secrets from each other, that was one of our rules when she took me in when I was just five years old.
I’m 17 now and Lexie isn’t with me, anymore. She passed away last year. Drugs consumed her. I’m sort of on the run. If the Cullens don’t accept me, then I will have to spend a year in a juvenile detention center since I no longer have a guardian. Or I could live on the streets, which would be the easiest way to avoid my case worker, Halle Chatham, who will stop at nothing until I am registered and put into the system as a ward of the state of Texas. All I have to do is avoid her until my 18th birthday, which is 11 months and 28 days away. Seems like forever.

Chapter 3 Motive

Baron led me to the living room and told me to wait.

"Can I get you anything? A coffee or a soda?" he asked.

"No, I'm fine."

"Very well."

Baron left. I was sitting in this huge living room, infront of an electronic fire place all alone, until I heard footsteps and humming. I turned around and a girl with short black hair stopped dead in her tracks when she saw  me. She stopped humming and eyed me, curiously.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"I'm Bella Ramora."

"Are you one of Rose's friends?" she asked, rolling her eyes.

"Um. I don't know who that is. I'm here to see Mr. and Mrs. Cullen."

"What do you want with my mom and dad?" She plopped down under me on the couch. Hasn't she ever heard of personal space? In the back of my mind, I knew I was looking at a sister who I have never met before. I suddenly wanted to hug her, but I restrained since we don't know each other, yet. I pictured it happening. A big happy, teary- eyed family reunion, which I longed for since I was seven.

"Alice." The little girl put out her hand for me to shake. "Put her there."

"Nice to meet you, Alice." I shook her hand, charmed.

We both looked at the stairway, hearing someone walk down. It was the first time I saw him. He looked so debonair and sleek. I stood up as he was walking down the stairs. I was mesmerized. And, I felt a little stupid for feeling that way, but I couldn't help it. This was my father i'm finally getting to meet. He looked at me and smiled, happy to see me. His reaction to me was the complete opposite of Baron's.

"We have company, I see."

"Dad, this is Bella Ramora. She's here to see you and mom."

"Oh?" he asked. " Carlisle Cullen." I shook his hand, and didn't want to let go. "And, what can we do for you, Miss Ramora. Is this about the Abernathy student scholarship fund? You want in on the action?" He had a handsome smirk.

"No," I replied. "I'm here because your my father and I wanted to meet you." It took me a moment to realize how rushed I sounded. His happy expression, slowly, peeled away. He stared at me, expressionless. Alice looked bemused, and turned away to go up the stairs as two other people were coming down. A boy and a girl dressed nicely in soft, pastel colors. They stopped in the middle of the stairway and looked at Carlisle and then at me.

The girl was blond and the boy had cropped red hair.

"What's going on, daddy?" the girl said. I couldn't help but look at them. I had more siblings I never knew about.

"Nothing, sweetheart. This is a private matter," Carlisle said. He put his attention back on me. "Bella, dear, I think you're mistaken. I know how many kids I have. And you're not one of them."

He motioned to the door. I looked and Baron was opening the door, just expecting me to leave just like that. He was laughing under his breath. Laughing at me. I could feel the hot tears bursting from behind my eyes. I turned back to Carlisle and pulled the note from my jean pocket.

"Read it," I demanded, sternfully. "Read what it says."

Carlisle opened the letter and read it. He looked confused. "Where'd you get this?"

"I've had it since I was seven. My mom... I mean, Lexie gave it to me."

"I don't know anyone by that name. I'm sorry, Bella." He gave me back the note.

"Why would I lie?" I shouted at him. The two kids looked on from the stairway, watching this trainwreck unfold. The girl seemed to be entertained by it all. My tears escaped. "I'm not a liar."

"What do want from us? Money? Why are you doing this?"

"... You're my dad."

"I think you've made a mistake."

"It's alright, daddy," the girl said, making her way down the stairs. "You're a very distinguished man. Who wouldn't want to be your daughter."

"Stay out of this, Rosalie," Carlisle warned.

"No. I'm calling the police." Rosalie walked right up to me. "You better cheer up. No one is going to care about your tears, where you're going."

"Rose!" It was Mrs. Cullen.

"Mom, this nutcase is saying that she's dad's long lost daughter."

"Esme, it's nothing. I can handle this," said Carlisle. "This sort of thing happens all the time. People are unbelievable..."

I knew she had to be my only hope. Without thinking, I flung myself at her. "Tell them! Tell them I'm your daughter. They don't believe me." I must have startled her, because she was backing away.

"Baron," Carlisled called.

Baron came and grabbed my arm, prying me away from Esme. I fought him off.

"How could you, Mom? How could you abandon me like that! I could have had a life. And, you won't even admit what you did!"

"Baron!" Carlisle called again.

"No!" I said. "I will not be tossed out of here. I'm not trash!"

They all looked at me, speechless.
