Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

***** Here's Chapter 3, Written by me :) (That rhymed!) *****

Chapter 3
I ran into the forest, stopping to kick my shorts off and tying them to my ankle, and phased, turning myself over to my wolf instincts.

It’s about time, Paul complained.

Hey, Jake, Embry greeted me.

What’s new, I asked, in full attack mode.

Sam informed me, She’s trying to throw us off her trail by mixing her scent with another vampire’s scent. Paul and Jared took one path and Embry and I went another path that led to a dead end. Paul and Jared almost had her. But she’s too fast. We’re near the Canadian border.

I nodded. I’m on my way, I thought, running after them.

Paul added, Oh yeah, I need my shorts back, kid.

I mentally rolled my eyes. I’ll drop ‘em off tomorrow.

You’d better, Paul warned.

Being a werewolf had its advantages. For one thing, we were fast. I liked the speed, feeling the wind in my fur. It made me feel amazing and free as a bird. And it’s great that the moon doesn’t affect our transformation, because we need to protect Forks and La Push from any vampires, whether during the daytime or at night. Another thing was that we get to kill the vampires. That was my way of revenge against those parasites for breaking Bella’s heart.

As soon as I thought her name, my heart soared. Of course, I was still focused on the mission ahead of me, but part of my mind was still at Bella’s house in her room. That’s when my mind slipped. For a second, I remembered seeing Bella and telling her my secret.

Jake! What the hell, man, Jared scolded me

She knows? Crap, Paul cursed.

Didn't we tell you to stay away from her, Embry reminded me.

I mentally sighed. I know, I know, but I couldn’t help myself. I needed to go see her.

And I was glad I did. I was glad I remembered how I loved her. But, somehow, that love felt stronger than ever. It was like we were meant to be together, like we were made for each other. It sounded crazy and maybe even a little insane, but I really did love her. I couldn’t ignore that fact, even if I tried.

Embry thought, Oh, Jake’s the hots for Bella. He laughed mentally.

I retorted, Shut up, Embry.

I tried to focus on the mission at hand, but, somehow, I couldn’t get Bella off of my mind. Her beautiful face just seemed to stay in my mind. Her long, brown hair, her chocolate brown eyes that were set into her beautiful pale face…

Bleh, Jared said, pretending to barf.

Give me a break, Paul complained.

Shut up, Jake! You’re making me nauseated, Embry joked.

I sighed; that was one of the worst parts about being a wolf: you have no secrets. You could try not to think about it, but it’s pretty hard. And everyone’s there to watch you make a fool of yourself. It really sucked, but it was good for strategy and communication in times like these, when we needed to kill vampires.

We got her cornered, Paul said.

I pushed my limbs to run faster and, soon, I was right behind Embry. Paul and Jared were chasing her towards a cliff, where she couldn’t escape.

At least, that what we thought.

Aw, crap, Jared thought as his head showed her jumping off the cliff and into the water, where we couldn’t reach her.

And just when the thought ended, we were at the cliff, watching as she swam towards James Island.

She’s too fast, Embry thought.

This is the second time she got away, Jared complained.

We’ll get her next time, Sam promised.

I doubt that, Paul thought pessimistically.

I shook my head; that red-head’s been causing trouble in Forks, killing hikers. Unfortunately, we’ve been just a little too late. It doesn’t help that there’s only five of us, but I wouldn’t wish the pain of becoming at werewolf on anyone.

Everyone shuddered at the memory of the pain.

All right, Sam thought. Back to La Push.

We all nodded and ran towards the beach. Just before I got there, I phased, throwing my shorts on, as did everyone else. We emerged from the forest and headed onto the beach; it was about three in the morning, so no one was here.

Sam said, “She may have gotten away this time, but we’ll get her next time.”Jared asked, “But she’s too fast for us. And she has a mate. There’re two of them-” Sam interjected, “Yeah, but there’re five of us. We can take her and her mate. Next time they strike, we’ll be there.” Paul asked, “When do you think that’ll be?” Sam sighed. “I’m not sure. But something tells me it won’t be any time too far. And when that time comes, we’ll be ready.” Everyone nodded. Sam said, “All right. Now, go home. Get some rest. You’ll need it.”

Everyone scrambled back towards their home. I was about to turn around, but someone’s hand caught my shoulder. “Not you, Jacob,” Sam’s deep voice said. I turned around, thinking that I did something wrong somehow. Sam said, “I just needed to talk to you for a second about some things.” I nodded cautiously. “What is it, Sam?” He sighed. “First, I need you to know something. You know how your great-grandfather, Ephraim Black, was the last pack leader, right?” I nodded. “Yeah, I know.” He said, “Which means, according to lineage, that you’re next in line to be leader of the pack.” I froze. Me? Pack Leader? I couldn’t imagine it. It was still very new to me.

Sam amended, “It’s fine if you don’t want to be leader, I just thought you might wanted to know, just in case you wanted to take your role as leader.” I thought about it. Did I really want to be leader? Hell, I didn’t even want to be part of anything with Sam. “Naw,” I said, turning the offer down. “I’ll stick to where I am.” Sam raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure about that?” I nodded. “I’m sure.”

Sam said, “And there’s also something else I needed to talk to you about.” I asked, “What is it?” He pursed his lips, struggling to find the right words. “About what you were… thinking… today. About Bella?” I sighed. “I know, I told the secret, but I… couldn’t keep it from Bella. I guess I let my heart get the better of my head and I wasn’t thinking straight-” Sam cut me off, “Let’s put that aside for a sec. I was talking about you saying that you… loved her?” I suddenly felt embarrassed; thinking about the girl you loved in front of your friends who could hear your every thought wasn’t something I was proud of, but I can’t help the thoughts in my head. Sam continued, “There’s something we hadn’t told you about being a werewolf.” I eyed him suspiciously.

“In the legends,” Sam continued. “there’s a very rare thing called Imprinting. Imprinting is when you find your soul mate, the one you’re destined to be with forever. You want to be there for her, whether she wants you as her friend, her brother, or her… love.” He was silent for a sec, as if waiting for me to say something. I asked, “How do you know when you’ve found your Imprint?” He sighed, but half smiled, as if the thought of Imprinting was pleasant to him. “When you find her, nothing else matters anymore. Just her. She’s your entire world. You can’t stop thinking about her, even if you tried.” Then, he said, more serious, “It’s supposed to be rare. It’s only happened to Jared and I. Remember Emily?” I nodded. He said, “She’s my Imprint. And Kim is Jared’s.” I nodded again.

Sam sighed and said, “Well, what I’m trying to get at here is that… I think you might’ve Imprinted on Bella.” My eyes widened. Me? Imprint on Bella? Damn, being a werewolf just keeps getting weirder and weirder. “I Imprinted on Bella?” Sam shrugged. “All the signs are there: Thinking about her constantly, already thinking that you love her, the stronger connection to her. It’s all there.” I… didn’t know what to say. Well, it sure did explain a lot.

Sam said, putting a hand on my shoulder, “You should head home and get some rest. It’s a lot to take in.” I nodded. “All right.” Sam jogged off towards his house. I thought about going to my house, but I decided to head somewhere else before I went home.

I ran up to Forks and to Bella’s house; I would just take one last look at her, just to make sure she was okay. I climbed up the tree and looked through her window. Even through the window, I could see her perfectly sleeping on her bed. I sighed contently. She was even beautiful when she was asleep. I felt that pull again that was telling me to go in the room, to rest by her side, to watch her closely from inside, but I knew I couldn’t do that. My body ached for her touch, ached to close the distance that seemed like an ocean between us, ached for her frail, fragile body in my arms, but I knew I couldn’t do that, either. I wanted her so badly, it hurt. I tried to ignore my stupid feelings and continued to look at her through the window.

She must’ve had a restless sleep, because her brown hair was strewn across her pillow like seaweed and her limbs were at awkward angles. Her eyebrows furrowed and she wrinkled her nose a little as her lips parted. She looked… stressed. Then, she mumbled in her sleep, “Mm… Jacob…” My heart swelled and I smiled; she was dreaming about me. She turned onto her side and begged, “Jake, don’t go…”It was as if she could see I was outside. I grinned even wider; damn, she really did love me.

I could feel that it was going to rain soon. I sighed and mentally said to her, I’ll be back tomorrow, I promise. It kinda seemed like she heard me because the corners of her lips turned up into a smile. I smiled, too. I felt a raindrop fall on my face and decided that it was my cue to leave.

I jumped off the tree and ran back to La Push, barely making it home before it started to pour rain. I sighed and felt my eye droop; I was exhausted. I walked sleepily to my bedroom, - it used to be a closet- plopped on my bed, and fell into deep unconsciousness, dreaming about the sleeping beauty through the window.
