Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

Chapter 4

Bella’s POV

I was having a nightmare again. Only, this one was different. I wasn’t alone; Edward was here, in front of me. Every time I reached for him, though, he would disappear and end up somewhere else. But then he disappeared for good, and in his place was Jacob.

I smiled at him. “Jake…” I murmured. I walked towards him, but he backed away. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Get back, Bella,” he warned.

“Why? Jake, just tell me what’s wrong. We can get through it.”

Just then, Edward reappeared, about the same distance away that Jacob was from me. I turned to look at him.

“Bella…” he whispered. “Don’t you still love me?”

I stared at him a minute. “Of course, Edward.”

Suddenly, a loud howl, much like a wolf, pierced my ears. I knew what it was, and I knew what I’d find when I finally brought myself to turn around. It pained me to know that my Jacob was in pain, and that I had caused it.

It wasn’t the human Jake standing in front of me when I spun around again; it was the wolf Jake. It was a russet-brown wolf, as big as a horse, if not bigger, and I was absolutely sure that it was him. I don’t know how I knew, but I did.

I could hear his words from earlier surrounding me from all sides. “I’m not that safe. I’m not good for you, Bella.”

I tried to run to him, but he wasn’t there anymore. Edward stood in his place.

“I thought we were meant to be, Bella,” he said. “I thought we were soul mates. But I guess I was wrong. Have a good life with the dog, Jacob Black.”

Even though I didn’t want Edward to leave me again, I couldn’t help but search for Jake. Where was he?

As if he could read my mind (no pun intended), Edward said, “He’s gone.”

I stared at him, confusion and anger and hurt all running through me. “What do you mean, ‘He’s gone?’”

He looked behind me. I was afraid to turn around; I didn’t know what I would see. I finally gained enough courage to slowly turn, and when I did, I gasped. There was a huge creature lying there, obviously in pain. That’s when I noticed how dark it had gotten. I could barely make out the color of the animal, but I knew what it was—rather, who it was.

Jacob. My Jacob.

I knew he was leaving me. It was the worst pain I had ever felt, a thousand times worse than when Edward had left me. I fell to the ground, not caring if Edward was still there or not, and broke down crying. I felt Jake slipping away from me.

“Jake, don’t go…” I sobbed. “Please.”

And then the setting changed. Instead of the forest, we were on the beach in La Push, and it was just the two of us. Me and Jacob. And he was no longer hurt. I sighed, perfectly happy now that we were together and he was okay.

We sat there in each other’s arms for forever until the sky changed. I knew it was going to rain, but I didn’t care. That is, until he started to get up. I looked up at him with desperate eyes. I couldn’t take it if he left me alone again. I needed him. I couldn’t live without him, and I didn’t want to try.

“I’ll be back tomorrow, I promise,” he said solemnly.

“Okay,” I smiled. He grinned back, and then it started to rain. Right before the downpour really came, I woke up.

I tried to register everything that had happened in the middle of the night. It was a lot to take in. My best friend is now a werewolf. And we love each other. I think I even love him more than…Edward.

It didn’t hurt as much to think his name now. The whole in my chest was significantly smaller. And I would bet anything that it had to do with Jacob.

I got up and showered, letting the warm water run until it turned cold. I dressed in a sweater and jeans, nothing special, and went downstairs to make some breakfast for Charlie and myself. He walked downstairs as I was moving the eggs from the pan to our plates.

“Good morning, Bells,” he greeted me.

“Good morning. What’s going on for today?” I asked.

He sipped his coffee. “I think I’m going fishing with Billy and Harry. It should be nice out today.”

“That’s nice,” I said. He eyed me suspiciously.

“Are you okay?”

I frowned. That was random. “Yeah. Why? Do I not seem okay?”

He shook his head. “No, it’s not that. You seem…happy. It’s been a while since you’ve been this happy. What brought it on?”

I didn’t know how to answer that. I couldn’t tell him that it was Jacob sneaking into my room in the middle of the night last night to see me, me finding out he’s now a werewolf, and us declaring our love for each other.

I suddenly became distant, and thankfully Charlie didn’t press for any more on that subject.

“What are you doing today?” he questioned.

I paused. I was sure that Jacob had said he would be back today. In fact, he had promised. But I didn’t think I could wait around for him. “Um, maybe I’ll go stop by Jake’s?”

He smiled. “Okay. You have fun now. But be careful if you go in the garage. We don’t need you getting more stitches in your head.”

I tried not to roll my eyes. “Alright, Dad.”

We finished eating in silence. Twenty minutes later, we were both on our way to La Push. We took the Cruiser; it didn’t make sense for us to take two different cars.

I got out of the car as soon as we parked. I was extremely eager to see Jake.

“In a hurry, Bells?” Charlie joked.

I shrugged. When I knocked on the door, Billy answered.

“Hello, Bella. Where’s Charlie?”

“Hi Billy. He’s coming.”

I went inside and looked around for my best friend.

“Hey, Billy? Where’s Jake? I wanted to talk to him about something.”

He frowned. I wonder if he knew that I knew that his son was a werewolf. “He’s sleeping. I don’t think you should wake him. He’s pretty tired these days.”

I’ll admit, I was a little disappointed. “Oh…okay.”

My dad walked in then, and they started talking and getting ready to go.

“Have fun, you two. I’m gonna go wait for him on the beach.”

They both said “Goodbye,” and left. I followed after, but took a different route, the one that led to first beach.

I sat there for about twenty minutes, mulling over the previous day’s events. I jumped when I heard a familiar husky voice behind me.

“Hi, Bella.”

His voice was soft, almost shy, but I’d been expecting some forewarning from the noisy rocks, and so it startled me. I could see his silhouette against the coming sunrise—it looked enormous.

He stood several paces away, shifting his weight from foot to foot anxiously. Suddenly, he ran up to me and engulfed me in a huge hug. His big arms wrapped completely around me.

I laughed when he set me down. “So you don’t hate me?” he asked.

“Hate you? How could I ever hate you, Jacob?”

He shrugged. “Do you remember what happened last night?”

“And you’re still my friend? Do you remember what you found out last night? Or were you too much asleep?”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course we’re still best friends. I don’t care that you’re a…werewolf. And I remember everything that happened last night; I wasn’t asleep,” I said. I recalled the whole night for the hundredth time. When I remembered us saying that we love each other, I blushed. Hopefully Jake would realize that that still meant brotherly, friendly love. Nothing more.

He grinned. “Good.”

There was a moment of silence. I knew he saw that I was blushing, and that made me feel self conscious.

He was the one to speak again. “You really, honestly don’t mind that I morph into a giant dog?” he asked, his voice playful.

“No. I really don’t care if you turn into a big wolf—you’re still Jacob.”

His smile got even wider, if that were possible. “You’re my girl, Bella.”

I smiled back and threw my arms around him. It reminded me of the first day with the motorcycles—he was bigger, though, and I felt even more like a child now.

Like that other time, he stroked my hair.

We eventually pulled away from each other, even though I was perfectly comfortable in his arms.

“So, tell me what it’s like to be a werewolf,” I said.

He laughed. “It’s good, at times. I’m still getting used to it. I’m very ‘young,’ which is why I wasn’t supposed to see you. You could get hurt.”

I stared into his eyes. “I don’t care. You can’t leave me, Jake. Not ever. I need you too much.”

“I won’t leave you,” he whispered.

“Good. Now that that’s out of the way—” he rolled his eyes—“What’s the best part about being a werewolf?” I was honestly curious.

“The speed,” he grinned. What was it with boys and the need to run or drive, or do anything for that matter, fast?

Still, I couldn’t help but smile, seeing him happy. It made me happy. It was like we shared the same emotions; his pain was my pain, his joy my joy. It was…weird.

“What’s the worst part?”

“Having no privacy.”

I looked at him, confused. “Huh?”

He sighed. “We can read each other’s minds when we’re in wolf form. It really comes in handy at times, like when we’re tracking down a leech, but other than that, it’s pretty annoying.”

“Are you serious? That’s really cool!”

He laughed. “Yeah, it’s cool, except when you want to keep something from the others. Like me coming to see you last night? I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone about that, but I slipped and they found out.”

“Why weren’t you allowed to see me?”

“Like I said, I’m new to all this werewolf stuff, and supposedly new werewolves are more dangerous than others, except they say that I have good control. I trusted myself enough to not lose my temper with you and keep control. My pack didn’t. They told me not to see you, but I needed to. I don’t think I could go one day without seeing you,” he said sincerely.

I smiled at him. “So you disobeyed your pack for me?”

He chuckled a bit. “Well Sam is the alpha, so what he says goes. But he never actually told me not to see you, it was Jared and Embry. So I really didn’t disobey anyone, since they have no control over me. Actually, they probably have to listen to what I say, since I’m the blood alpha.”

“Alpha? You mean like, you’re the leader of the pack?”

“Pretty much. Sam told me about it last night, right before we talked about Im—uh, nothing.”

“Im-what?” I pressed.

“Nothing. It’s a pack secret.”

I let it drop, and listened to him talk about how different his life is now for a good hour. When it started to rain, we walked back to his house, him complaining about how hungry he was.
