Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

***Chapter 5, written by me***

Chapter 5
When we got to his house, we had a couple sodas.

“Do we have any food,” Jake asked, looking through the cabinets, frowning when he didn’t find anything.

I said, “It’s fine, Jake. We can go to the Lodge. My treat.”

He thought about it, and then said, “No, that’s okay. I know a place better than the Lodge. And it’s free.” We went out back in the garage, where we took his car to wherever he was taking me.

He parked in front of an unfamiliar house. It was small, very homey in a way. I could hear voices inside, sounding very enthused. I got out of the car. Jake walked over to me.

“The pack’s inside,” he said, sighing.

I asked, “Is that a bad thing?”

He shook his head. “Not really. It was just that I wasn’t supposed to see you yesterday. Or tell you the secret. They didn’t like that too much.”

I said, “Then, maybe I should just wait in the car.”

But before I could turn around, Jake caught my hand. “It’s fine, Bella,” he said. “No need to be embarrassed. They won’t mind.”

I looked at him briefly, and then sighed. “All right.” He nodded and we walked towards the small house; I noticed he hadn’t let go of my hand. But who was I to complain?

Jake led me inside, not bothering to knock, and, as soon as I walked in, I saw two shirtless guys sitting at a table, eating a whole plate of cookies. I looked up at Jacob; they looked like they could be Jake’s brothers, if Jake had any brothers. I looked back at the boys who were also looking up at me. I recognized Embry, but it was a little hard to believe it was him with his hair cropped short, like Jake’s was now. The other guy was looking at me curiously, as if he wanted to ask a lot of questions.

“So Jake,” the guy said. “You finally brought her.” He looked down at our entwined fingers, raising his eyebrow. I felt the blood boil under my skin.

“Sam told you,” Jake said; it wasn’t a question, just a statement. He nodded.

Jake sighed and mumbled something I could quite catch. “Bella, this is Jared and, you know Embry. We’re in Sam’s wife’s place, Emily.” Embry nodded towards me, rather than an actually “hi.” And Jared just looked at me suspiciously; Well, didn’t this feeling uncomfortable.

Jacob whispered in my ear, too low for anybody to hear, “Don’t stare at Emily. It bugs Sam.” I nodded, though I wasn’t really sure what he was talking about.

“Who’s here,” I heard another voice say. A woman’s voice. She came into the room from what looked like a bathroom and looked at Jake and I; she was beautiful. She had copper toned skin and long dark hair she kept in pigtails. Then, I looked at the right side of her face. There were three long scars from her hairline to her chin, setting the half of her lips in a permanent frown. Thankfully, I heeded Jacob’s warning and didn’t stare.

“It’s Bella,” Jared said. “Remember?”

Emily chuckled. “Oh, I remember.” She looked at Jacob with a raised eyebrow. Jake pursed his lips, looking a little embarrassed.

“Bella, this is Emily. Emily, you know Bella.”

I looked at Emily. How did she know me? Had Jacob talked about me? I blushed at the thought. Emily smiled and held out her hand. I took it and shook it.

“It’s nice to finally meet you,” Emily said with a smile on half of her face. “Jacob has talked a lot about you.” She looked at him with her raised eyebrow again. He laughed nervously as the blood boiled under my skin.

“I’m sorry, I can’t say the same,” I said, letting go of her hand. She laughed.

Then, two other guys came in. One of them I recognized was Sam. The other, I wasn’t so sure about. Luckily, before I could think about it too long, Jacob introduced me to them.

“Bella, you know Sam. And this is Paul.” He gestured to Paul, who looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Wow, Jake,” he said. “She’s just as pretty as you said she was.” Embry and Jared started laughing. Jake looked like he was blushing under his dark tone and smack Paul upside the head. I actually felt my face burn; how much did Jacob talk about me?

Sam said, “All right, guys. Paul and I have some news.” Then, all the boys got serious, looking at Sam intently. He sighed.

“She’s still out there,” he said in an ominous tone. “And we know she’s after something because she keeps returning frequently. The only question is what she’s after.” The boys were silent.

I broke the silence by asking, “Who are you talking about?” Instead of looking at me, the boys looked at Jacob, as if they expected him to do something. Jacob sighed.

“It’s nothing to worry about, Bella,” he said. “It’s just this red headed bloodsucker that we’ve been trying to catch.”

My heart stopped. Oh, crap. Victoria. It was her, I was sure of it. I felt my knees buckle.

“Bella,” I heard Jacob yell as he caught me falling down on his knees to cradle my hand in his arms.

I looked up at him with scared, nervous eyes. He looked at me with a worried expression. Everyone was now crowded over me. Embry, Paul, and Jared all looked like they were going to burst out laughing right then and there, while Sam and Emily looked genuinely worried.

“Huh,” I mumbled, a little disoriented.

“What happened, Bella,” Jake asked, his face looking so worried like I had never seen before. I wondered why.

“Victoria,” I breathed out, trying to take in deep breaths. “The vampire you have to kill… She wants Edward.”

Everyone looked confused at first.

Jacob asked, “How do you know?”

I answered, “Edward killed her mate… James, last spring. She probably thinks… Edward is still here.”

No one said a word.

“Well,” Embry said, looking a little awkward. “That changes things.” Everyone nodded in agreement.

Jake helped me up and made me eat some cookies, because I still felt a little faint. The pack talked quickly and quietly about Victoria while Jake and I ate. Jacob was looking at me in concern, making sure I ate.

After I ate, Jake insisted that I get some fresh air. He accompanied me on a walk into the woods.

“Are you okay,” he asked me for the tenth time.

“Yes, Jake, I’m fine,” I answered. He nodded, still looking at me intently. I sighed.

“Jake, I’m fine. I swear.” He chuckled, seeing that I was clearly annoyed.

“Sorry,” he apologized. “You kinda gave me a scare back there.” I raised an eyebrow as we walked through the trees and bushes. He sighed and took my hand, not budging when I gently tried to retract it. I gave up finally, not because I couldn’t make him budge, but because… I like the feeling of his fingers interlaced with mine.

We were walking for a while when I stopped and recognized where we were. I looked around the familiar meadow, which held so many past memories I used to hold so dear to my heart. But, for once in a really long time, when I thought about Edward… I hadn’t felt that hole in my chest. I felt… happier. Better than before.

Jake squeezed my hand. I turned and looked at him.

“Why are you smiling,” he asked.

Was I smiling? I hadn’t noticed.

I bit down on my lip and looked around the meadow again. “Well, I used to come here with Edward. I thought I would be sad to be here, but…”

Jake asked, “But what?”

I looked at him and beamed. “I actually haven’t felt this happy in a long time.”

He grinned, too. “Neither have I,” he replied, and his words burned with truth.

All of a sudden, Jacob completely froze, the smile wiping off of his face. Just before I could ask him what was wrong, he was in a defensive crouch in front of me, a snarl slipping out of his lips as his eyes looked at something fiercely. I looked up and gasped at what he was staring at.

There, in front of Jake, stood a familiar figure, with dull burgundy eyes that were focused on me. I wondered why Jake was being so protective, it was someone I knew well.
