Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

***This chapter was written by me :) Enjoy! ***

Chapter 7
It’s been about a month since I’ve known Jake was a werewolf. It’s been crazy ever since Jake and the pack found out that Victoria was trying to find Edward. I think she would’ve gone to the Cullen house to look for them, but I’m not sure who else she’d be looking for if she knew that they weren’t here.

Jake’s been really busy on patrol. He said that he keeps guarding the house, just in case Victoria gets close.

“Jake, I’ll be fine,” I told him one day when we were hanging by the beach. I was sitting beside him, my knees bent towards my face. He was lying down on the sand, his eyes closed.

“You shouldn’t have to lose sleep over me,” I told him, running my fingers through his hair. He slightly smiled at my touch.

“Don’t worry about it, Bells. I’m happy to be the one to guard the house. I’m not even sure I trust the pack with you yet.” I looked at him suspiciously. He opened one eye and saw my expression.

He explained, “It’s just because you’re a magnet for trouble. And you’re clumsier than anybody else I know.” I had to laugh at that. He chuckled along with me.

“You know,” I said in a matter-of-factly tone. “You’re not the first person to tell me that.” I thought about a time when Edward used to tell me that I was a magnet for trouble.

I felt Jake’s body tense, as if waiting for something to happen. I looked down at him and furrowed my eyebrows. He had the same look on his face.

“What is it,” I asked.

He hesitated before explaining, “It’s just… every time you used to mention… them, you’d look… pained.”

The blood burned slightly in my cheeks. “You noticed?” He nodded. He probably used to feel so nervous when bringing them up because he thought he would hurt me. I sighed.

“Well, that won’t happen again, I promise,” I told him. “I feel a lot better now, thanks to you.” He smiled at me and hesitantly entwined his fingers with mine. I sighed.

But, during that time, I didn’t want to pull my hand away. I mean, it would have been right to pull my hand away, because Jake had always felt like a brother to me. But, when he took my hand in his… I felt more than just a brotherly/sisterly love. It felt like our friendship was growing into something stronger, something more… permanent.

Today was Saturday and I was waiting for Jake to pick me up. He had patrol today and he said he would pick me up when he was off. I had already cleaned the house, did the laundry, and finished all my homework and it was barely eleven in the morning. Now, I was just sitting on the couch thinking to myself. I didn’t know what to do to pass the time. Then, I thought to myself, I’ve been spending so much time with Jacob, I haven’t had much time with Angela or Jessica or any of my friends outside of school. I walked to the kitchen and picked up the phone, dialing Angela’s number.

“Hello,” a voice answered.

“Hey, Ang. It’s Bella.”

“Hey, Bella. What’s up?”

“I was wondering if you had any plans. Maybe you can come by and we can watch a movie or something.”

“Sure, that sounds great. Ben’s off with Austin and my parents decided to take the twins to the beach anyway.”

“Cool. And call Jessica; see if she wants to come over.”

“Sure thing, Bella. I’ll be over at your house in ten.”

“Thanks, Ang. See you then.”

I hung up the phone and raided our videos. I found a movie called Steel Magnolias. Charlie probably had this movie before mom left. I set it on the coffee table and waited patiently for Angela.

I jumped when I heard a car horn honk. I got up from the couch and walked to the door, opening it to find Angela, smiling.

“I’m ready for a girls’ afternoon,” she said excitedly. I laughed lightly. She came inside.

“Jessica will be here in five,” she noted. I nodded.

“Perfect. Just enough time for me to make popcorn.” She walked to the living room and sat down, while I went to the kitchen, grabbed a popcorn bag, and put it in the microwave, setting it for three minutes. Angela picked up the movie from the coffee table and put a hand over her heart.

“You have Steel Magnolias,” she asked, sympathy in her voice.

“Yeah,” I answered. “But I’ve never watched it. My dad had the movie.”

Angela looked at me and said, “This movie’s one of my favorites.”

I shrugged. “I have no idea what it’s about.”

She giggled. “It’ll make you cry,” she said. “It made me cry the first time I watched it.”

I laughed. “It probably will make me cry.”

Soon, Jessica came, the popcorn was ready, and we started the movie. It was a really good movie. And I did cry when Shelby died. Jess and Ang cried, too. It was really nice and I liked it. After the movie, Jess, Ang, and I were just hanging out. That’s when the doorbell rang. I got up and answered the door and smiled when I found Jacob at the doorstep. He smiled.

“Hey, Bells,” he said.

“Hey, Jake.”

He pulled me into a tight hug. I could feel Jessica’s and Angela’s eyes on us. Jake pulled back and smiled at me. Then, he looked over at Jessica and Angela. I looked at them, too.

“Oh, sorry. Jess, Ang, you both know Jacob. From La Push last year?” They nodded.

“Hey,” Jess said with a flirtatious look on her face. Ang elbowed her rubs, making Jessica glare at her. Angela smiled at Jake.

“Hey, guys,” he said casually. He looked back at me and asked, “Hey, can I use your restroom?” I nodded and we stalked past me and upstairs to the bathroom. I sat back down on the couch with Angela and Jessica. They smiled at me suspiciously.

“What,” I asked.

“You picked a good-looking rebound,” Jess said. “I mean, Jacob Black. Who knew?”

I furrowed my eyebrows. “He’s not my rebound. Jake and I are just friends.” Jess and Angela looked at each other in disbelief.

“Bella,” Jessica said. “It’s pretty obvious that he likes you. Even a blind person would know that.” I rolled my eyes.

“It’s not like that with Jacob. He’s just been hanging out with me is all.”

Jessica rolled her eyes. “Well, he sure doesn’t think that.” She started making kissy faces at me childishly. Angela laughed. I shook my head.

“Jake knows that I don’t like him that way.”

“Well, it doesn’t mean he’s not going to keep trying to win you over,” Jessica said.

“Plus,” Ang said hesitantly. “It kinda seems like you do like him that way.”

I sighed; how many times have I been mistaken to like Jake that way? I can’t even keep track anymore. Charlie, Mike, and, now, my two best friends? I don’t like him that way. I mean… I don’t think I do. I can’t even tell anymore.

“Just give him a chance,” Angela said, as if she was reading my mind. I sighed again.

“I don’t know,” I said thoughtfully. Then, Jake came out of the restroom. Jessica was giggling as soon as he came into view.

“I was gonna ask if you wanted to hang out, Bella,” he started. “But I can see that you’re with your friends.”

Before I could say anything, Angela said, “We’re actually just about to leave.” She grabbed her stuff and pulled Jess out the door. I shook my head; Jessica can be so out of it when a guy’s involved in the picture.

“So,” Jake said, all smiles and dimples. “Ready to go?” I nodded and we head out the door, into the Rabbit.

“Where to this time, Chief Jacob,” I asked teasingly. He laughed.

“How about just hanging in the garage? My dad’s out fishing with Harry today.”

“Sounds good to me.” He started the car and we drove down the street.

When we got to La Push, I couldn’t help but think about what Jessica and Angela said. I mean, I really wouldn’t think of Jacob as anything more than a brother. Well, that is, until that dream I had before when I had fainted at Emily’s. I had no idea what could have triggered that dream.

Jake and I just hung at the garage. We stayed in the car, just talking.

“So, what were you talking about when I was in the bathroom,” he asked, yawning.

I shrugged. “Just girl stuff.”

He rolled his eyes. “Bella, you suck at lying. Is it that bad?”

I shrugged again. “Nothing you really need to worry about,” I said, not wanting to bring up the situation. I’ve already had one, too many, conversations about this topic.

He looked at me suspiciously, and then just shook his head, leaning back and closing his eyes. “I don’t even think I wanna know,” he said with a chuckle. I laughed with him.

“Tired again,” I asked him, brushing some hair out of his face. He nodded.

“Long morning of patrol,” he explained. “I was mostly trying to get away from it.”

“Why,” I asked.

He hesitated, but then said, “So I could spend the rest of the day with you.” He opened an eye to check my expression. It even surprised me when I smiled.

“Thanks, Jake,” I said. He smiled. I rested my head on his shoulder, feeling tired, too. He sighed and, within seconds, he was snoring lightly. I was just thinking to myself.

Maybe I could like Jacob that way. I honestly didn’t ever think that I would like Jake that way. Maybe Angela was right. Maybe I should give Jake a chance. But that would mean risking our whole friendship just to have him be mine for who knows how long.

But, haven’t I always wished Jacob to be mine? Before, I wanted him like he was my own flesh-and-blood brother. And now… it’s something stronger. It’s hard to explain.

And before I could think about it too long, I found myself falling into unconsciousness, sleeping soundly next to Jacob.
