Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

Chapter 8

Tap tap tap.

I was woken up by the sound of something tapping against what sounded like glass.

Tap tap tap.

There it was again. Unwillingly, I cracked one eye open. A flood of memories came rushing back to me when I saw Jake’s face so close to mine. Watching a movie with Angela and Jessica, the conversation about my relationship with Jake, and falling asleep with him in his car.

Tap tap tap.

I looked away from Jacob and out the window, where I assumed the noise was coming from. Standing there was an uncomfortable looking Charlie.

Oh crap.

This must look so bad! Just the two of us together in a car, sleeping. Oh, man. Charlie was going to kill me.

My face turned bright red as I looked at my dad. I would have gotten out of the car, but Jake’s arm was draped over me, holding me to him. I settled for rolling down the window.

“Hi, Dad,” I started.

“What’s going on here, Bella?”

“Um,” there was no way he’d believe me. “We were just…” this was all coming out wrong. “Uh, what are you doing here?”

He frowned. “I met up with Billy and Harry while they were fishing. I came back here for dinner. I figured you were here too.”

This whole situation was just…awkward. I wanted to crawl under a rock and hide from everyone.

“I’ll be inside in a minute, then. Jake’s kinda crushing me.” Oh my gosh, why did I say that?”

Charlie looked uneasy. “Alright…”

The minute he was out of sight, I started shaking Jake to wake him up. “Jake, you have to wake up now.” He groaned but finally opened his eyes.

He smiled at me. “Hey.”

I frowned. “Hi.”

“What’s wrong?”

I sighed. “Charlie just walked by and saw us. He woke me up and told me to come have dinner. It was possibly the most awkward moment of my life.”

He laughed. “Really?”

I punched him in the arm; I knew I didn’t hurt him. “Jacob! It was embarrassing!”

He grinned sheepishly. “Yeah, it probably was. But it’s not like anything happened.”

I blushed, and he noticed. “I know, but…”

“But what?” he pushed.

I sat there for a minute, comfortable in his warm arms, not sure what I wanted. Was I really starting to develop feelings stronger than just friendship for Jake? Or was I just being ridiculous? I didn’t have the chance to answer, as I heard Charlie call my name from a distance.

“We have to go. They’re all waiting for us.”

He sighed and opened the car door. We both climbed out and walked hand-in-hand to his little red house that I had come to love so much. We tried to sneak in the door without anyone noticing, someone called his name and ruined it.

We turned around to see a boy, probably around fourteen or fifteen, running toward us.

“Hey, Seth!” Jake called as they greeted each other in a one armed hug, slap on the back kind of thing that guys did.

“Who’s this?” the kid asked, smiling.

“Seth, this is Bella. Bella this is Seth Clearwater, Harry’s son.”

“Hi! You’re Charlie’s daughter, right?” he asked as we shook hands.

I smiled. “Yeah.”

“You’re right, Jake. She is pretty,” he said, making both of us blush.

Another person came up behind him. A girl, with a sour expression on her face.

“Bella, this is Leah, Seth’s sister. Leah, this is Bella Swan.”

“Hi,” I said with a smile, extending my hand.

She hesitated for a minute before shaking it. “Hi.”

There was an uncomfortable silence around us. I didn’t like it, but it was better than going inside and having to deal with Charlie.

“Kids! Come on and eat!” Billy called.

“I’m not a kid,” Leah and I mumbled at the same time, causing us to laugh.

We walked over to the back porch to see Charlie, Harry, Billy, and someone I assumed was Harry’s wife. I think her name was Sue.

We were having spaghetti, and we all talked and ate together. I tried not to look at Charlie, or even Billy for that matter, for fear that they would bring up what happened before. Thankfully, they had the sense not to.

Before I knew it, the sky was dark, and we were all saying goodbye. I hugged Seth and Leah before they left. I had really come to like them, and it seemed that they liked me too.

“I’ll see you around,” I said to them.

“Yeah! We should chill sometime,” Seth said.

I laughed. “Definitely.”

“You should really come over one day, Bella. We’d love to have you,” Leah said. I smiled and thanked her.

They left, and Charlie honked the car horn. He was taking me home, since Jacob had driven me here.

I looked at him, and gave him a huge hug before I left. I felt like a piece of me was still back there with him. I missed him, and it had been about fifteen minutes.

As I walked inside my house, I tried to sneak past my dad and run upstairs to my room.

“Bella, can you come here for a minute?” he called from the couch. Crap.

“Yeah sure, what’s up, Dad?”

“Did you have a nice time tonight?” he asked. He seemed ill at ease.

“Yes,” I said hesitantly, knowing where he was going with this but wanting to believe I was wrong.

“What did you do before dinner?”

I tried to keep my voice light. “This morning, Jessica and Angela came over and we watched a movie together. Then Jake came over and we hung out in the garage for a while.” It was the truth, I wondered why I was so nervous.

“So, you’re telling me that you two were just hanging out in the garage?” he questioned.

I really wanted to roll my eyes at him, but that wouldn’t get me anywhere. “Yes.”

“You’re sure?”

“Of course I’m sure, Dad!”

“If that’s true, then why were you asleep in his car with him?” We both cringed.

I had to tell at least a little white lie. “He was fixing something and I was helping him and we fell asleep. He was out with his friends late last night and didn’t get much sleep.” I explained.

He studied my face for a while, searching to see if I was lying. He seemed to buy it. Thankfully.

“Alright, but, look, there’s something I need to say.” He frowned, looking very uncomfortable.

I sat still, waiting. He met my gaze for a second before shifting his eyes to the floor. He didn’t say anything more.

“What is it, Dad?”

He sighed. “I’m not good at this kind of thing. I don’t know how to start…”

I waited again.

“Okay, Bella. Here’s the thing.” He got up from the couch and started pacing back and forth across the room, looking at his feet all the time. “I don’t know what’s going on between you and Jacob, but you seem pretty close—”

“We’re just friends,” I cut him off.

“Yeah, sure. But either way, there are some things you need to be careful about. I know you’re an adult now, but he’s not. And you’re still young, Bella, and there’s a lot of important things you need to know when you…well, when you’re physically involved with—“

“Oh, please, please no!” I begged. “Please tell me you are not trying to have a sex talk with me. About Jacob.”

He glared at the floor. “I am your father. I have responsibilities. Remember, I’m just as embarrassed as you are. And I know for a fact that Billy is having this same talk with Jacob.”

“I don’t think that’s humanly possible. And I don’t care what they’re doing. Anyway, Mom beat you to the punch about ten years ago. You’re off the hook.”

“Ten years ago you didn’t have a boyfriend.”

“And I don’t have one now!” I exclaimed, not even feeling the hole in my chest anymore.

“But you did, and you’re going to have more.”

“I doubt that will happen any time soon,” I said, even though I felt like I was lying.

“Just promise me that you’ll be responsible.”

I sighed. “Don’t worry, Dad.”

There was an uncomfortable silence around us. “Is there anything else? Or can I go?”

I caught sight of his face, and it was just as red as mine. “No, that’s it.”

I heaved a sigh of relief. “Okay, I’m going to bed. Good night.”

“Good night,” he called as he sat back down on the couch.

I ran upstairs as fast as I could, more than eager to get away from that situation. I showered, got dressed in my pajamas and brushed my teeth before settling into bed.

I laid there for a good thirty minutes. I tried to fall asleep, even though I shouldn’t have had to. I’d done a lot today, and it was pretty late. I was exhausted.

But I couldn’t fall asleep.

I kept thinking of what everyone thought me and Jacob did. And about that dream I had a few weeks back. And about how my relationship with Jake seemed to be growing, into something more than a brother/sister friendship relationship.

And I wasn’t stopping it.

I shouldn’t be attracted to him. I’d never been in the past. But now…it was complicated.

Finally, unconsciousness took me, and when I woke up, it was light out. I walked downstairs, expecting—and dreading—to see Charlie in the kitchen. It was Sunday. He had off today.

But the kitchen was empty, and before I could start panicking, I saw a note on the counter.

I’m spending the day with Charlie and Billy. We’re probably going hunting and fishing. Will call later.

I was actually relieved that Charlie was going to be out all day. I wouldn’t have to deal with the awkwardness that would be sure to come after yesterday’s conversation. But I didn’t know what I was going to do. Jessica and Angela wouldn’t want to hang out again since we had met up yesterday. I guess that left Jake.

I ate breakfast and dialed his number.

“Hey, Bella!” even over the phone I could tell he was smiling.

“Hey Jake. I was wondering if you wanted to come over today?”

“Sure thing! I’ll be there in a few.” I grinned.

“Okay, see you then.”

I waited impatiently for him to arrive, and when he did he embraced me in a bone crushing hug.

“I missed you,” he mumbled against my hair.

I laughed. “It hasn’t even been a day.”

“I don’t care,” he said, and I smiled.

We went inside and watched TV, sitting on the couch, leaning against each other. He fell asleep after an hour, and I didn’t wake him. I knew he was doing patrol late at nights frequently because he wanted to get rid of Victoria.

So I let him sleep. I was fully rested and just sat there watching him. He looked different. Younger. It reminded me that Jacob was younger than me, something that I had seemed to forget when we were together. He just seemed so mature, it was hard to believe he was still only sixteen.

Eventually, I got up to make lunch. I heated up some of the left over spaghetti that we took home from Billy’s last night.

I jumped when I heard Jacob behind me. I thought he was still sleeping.

“Hey, sleepyhead. How was your nap?”

He yawned and smiled. “Needed. But I’m sorry I keep falling asleep every time we hang out.”

“No problem.”

I couldn’t look him in the eye. I couldn’t look at him period, because I felt this emotion come over me, this emotion that was extremely new to me. I wanted nothing more in that moment but Jacob.

He seemed to notice how I was hesitant to look at him. He cupped his big brown hand under my chin and made me look at him. “What’s wrong?”

I shrugged, and he didn’t say anything else. We stared at each other for a long moment. His hand smoldered against my skin.

He lifted his other hand to brush his fingertips along my cheek, trailing them down to my jaw. I could feel his fingers tremble. He pressed his palm against my cheek, so that my face was trapped between his burning hands.

“Bella,” he whispered.

I was frozen.

No! I hadn’t made this decision yet. I didn’t know if I could do this, and now I was out of time to think. But I would have been a fool if I thought rejecting him now would have no consequences.

I stared back at him. He was not my Jacob. But it felt like he was, and he could be. His face was familiar and beloved. In so many real ways, I did love him. And it felt like my love for him was only growing.

And why couldn’t I be with Jacob? Edward was forever lost, and I was finally getting over him.

It would probably be easy—like holding his hand or having his arm around me. I had a gut feeling that it would be natural, and right.

Keeping his eyes on mine, Jacob began to bend his face toward me.
u guys and ur cliffies! :-{ luv it!!! post soon:)
