Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

Chapter 11 (Edward’s POV)
I got off my plane that landed, ignoring the flirtatious stares of the young women who had their eyes on me the entire trip from New York to Seattle. It was interesting to know that I haven’t lost my touch, or, as Bella had put it, I haven’t stopped “dazzling” people here in Washington. I’d been far off in another country that I had almost completely forgotten about my time here.

I sighed and tried to banish the thought of Bella and the memories I shared with her. Stop, I mentally said to myself. You are just here to check on her, not remorse about her.

Yes, I was here to check on her. One of the last times I would be checking on her. After this visit, I’ll wait a couple years, just to make sure she was okay and happy. If I found she was better than the last time I saw her, I would wait, maybe a decade or two, to check on her again. And if she wasn’t better… it wouldn’t be any of my business. Not anymore, at the least.

Alice had warned me of coming back. She said she saw me watching Bella, and then the vision disappeared for some bizarre reason. She’s worried I might get hurt, though the notion is laughable. It was unlikely that I’d get hurt by anything here. Though Alice, being the annoying little sister I’ve always had, insisted for me not to go, also for the reason that I would still miss and love Bella.

That part I could not argue with.

I still loved Bella with the same passion as I had before I left her. I knew it was the right thing to do, leaving her, but it wasn’t the best thing for my heart. I still longed for her to be my own. I knew she would never take me back, even if I begged. I hurt her too much, far too much for me to ever be forgiven. I’d understand if she never forgave me again. What I did to her not only hurt her, but it probably scarred her. One minute, pouring your heart out for the girl you love, then the next, telling her that you’re going away without her? It was cruel, but it was what I had to do.

I left the airport with one duffel bag with a cell phone, money, and clothes for the evening; I didn’t know how long I’d be in town, and if I had to stay overnight, I’d have some things with me. I walked out of the airport, smelling the wet gravel; nothing but rain here. I called a cab and it drove me down to Forks. Thankfully, it was a rainy morning, and I could arrive at my house without any trouble. I paid the cab driver as he dropped me off, and he gasped at the humongous tip.

“Sir,” he said. He was a middle aged man, around the age of sixty, or maybe fifty. “I think you’re mistaken,” he told me, handing me back my fifty dollar bill.

I shook my head. “Keep it,” I told him. I had heard in his head that he’d been driving the cab for almost thirty years and I was feeling oddly generous today. Surely a tip is in order.

The man nodded gratefully at me, then drove off. I looked up at what used to be my house. I sighed and walked in. The door was open and the house was completely empty, except for the furniture, but it felt empty because I couldn’t read a single mind. It felt nice to be in silence for once.

Focus, Edward,
I thought to myself. You’re here for a specific reason.

I sighed and placed my bag on the floor. Then, I took off in a run, staying in the forest. I came to a stop and climbed up a couple trees, just so I could see the high school. It was around three in the afternoon, so school should be out shortly. I heard the final school bell ring and, within seconds, people had scattered. I searched around and saw some familiar face, though none of them were the faces I had been looking for.

Then, I finally saw her. She walked out of the building, walking towards her truck (I can hardly believe that it still works) with her backpack slung over her shoulder. I felt my heart swell. She was just the same way I had left her, only her hair may have been a couple inches longer and her coordination could have improved slightly. Though there was still that beautiful heart-shaped face, her pale skin that clung to her fragile body, and there was still that silence when I tried to hear her mind. I chuckled lightly; I was hoping that would change when I came back. Yet, here I am, still wondering what she’s thinking.

Though, something seemed a little different about her. Something in the lightness of her footsteps, something in her eager expression as she accelerated her car. I watched her curiously, wishing desperately that I could just read her mind for a second. She drove off, a little faster than she usually would, and I followed her among the treetops, carefully keeping my distance so I wouldn’t intake her delicious, sweet scent. Thankfully, I had hunted before I jumped on the plane, just in case I got too close.

She parked in the driveway of her house, slinging her backpack on her shoulder and hurrying inside because of the incoming rain. I got a little closer, sitting atop the branch. I could hear her sweet voice. She was apparently on the phone.

“Great,” she said, a smile in her voice. “Can’t wait for you to be here.” She hung up the phone and then it was quiet once again.

What she said made me curious. Who was she waiting for? Charlie? It was highly unlikely. I’m not sure what Charlie’s presence would do to excite her. Her mother? Maybe Renee was flying in? That was a possibility, though I doubted it. Bella would usually go to Jacksonville, so that cancels out. Maybe Angela or Jessica? I’m sure she just saw them before she had left school, so I’ve no idea what would make her so happy about seeing her friends after just a couple minutes.

She sounded happy… almost giddy, even. Like she was waiting for someone in particular. A boyfriend, perhaps? The thought made my head ache. Just thinking about her in the arms of someone else, after this short amount of time… it was just too painful. If it was a boyfriend, then who could it be? Maybe Mike, Eric, or Tyler finally had the guts to ask her out? It was likely, though, I’m not sure why Bella would sound so happy. She never really liked any of the guys. Maybe it’s another guy, one I don’t know about. I groaned quietly in frustration; what I would give to just take a look into her mind.

Within the next couple minutes, a car came into view, parking in front of Bella’s house. I was about to look into the window when the scent hit me. The repulsive, nauseating odor that I had not yet forgotten about. Werewolves. Then, the form of Jacob Black came into view as he got out of his car. What was the dog doing there? My eyes widened in disbelief as I heard his thoughts.

He chuckled quietly to himself. He could see Bella through the window, rushing to clean the house for him. He sighed in contentment and relief. Thank God she called me as soon as she got home. I didn’t think I could wait another second with seeing her. She was all I could think about today. Especially the kiss… He reminisced about a memory of kissing Bella from what seems to be from the night before.

My heart slowly started to break. Bella had already moved on? With this mutt? It wasn’t like I hadn’t expected her to move on, but to move on so quickly when I thought she had fallen in complete love with me? It was heartbreaking to watch. Though I was in pain from my one and only love, my curiosity told me to stay and listen, just to see why she had chosen him of all people. I listened closely to Jacob’s mind and watched them from the tree.

Jacob Black walked to the porch and knocked on her door. She had answered almost immediately, her cheeks blushing scarlet when she realized how quickly she had opened the door. Jacob smiled at her.

“Hey,” he said with a content sigh. He pulled her into his arms and they shared a brief kiss. I felt my heart shatter and it was nearly unbearable to witness.

When he had pulled away from her lips, she said to him, “Come inside. The rain’s coming down hard.”

He resisted a smile, since werewolves don’t get cold in the rain, but followed her instructions and agreed to go inside. She took his hand and led him inside, closing the door behind her. I swung on branches to get closer to the house. When I was as close as I could get, I watched everything through Jacob’s mind.

“Hungry,” Bella asked as she walked into the kitchen. “Sandwich or something?”

“Yes, please,” he said as he sat down on the living room couch. He thought to himself, God, how could I be so lucky to have Bella as my Imprint?

My eyes widened. Imprint?! I was at a loss for words. I could hardly believe it. I really had thought that Bella really did belong to me, that we were forbidden soul mates. But, I guess not…

Jacob heard something fall and Bella gasped.

“Crap,” she cursed. Jacob furrowed his eyebrows. What’s she doing?

He got up from the couch and walked to the kitchen. Bella’s back was facing him and she was holding her finger in pain. He chuckled and walked quietly behind her.

“Cut yourself,” he asked, making her jump.

“Jeez, Jake,” she said, holding her good hand to her chest. “Don’t scare me like that.” Then she held her finger again. “No, I didn’t cut myself. The knife just sliced my finger a little.”

Jacob chuckled. Wow, she could trip over a pebble. I had to smile a little; it was no doubt that Bella was a magnet for getting hurt. I knew it, Charlie knew it, and even that mangy mutt knew it.

“Let me see,” he said, holding out his hand. She hesitated, but eventually held her hand out. Jacob took her hand and examined it, seeing the small cut on her index finger. Thankfully, she took her hand and held a tissue to it before any blood could bubble from the cut.

Jacob said, “Bella, I can’t help you if you don’t let me see the cut.”

She said stubbornly, “No, I don’t want you to see it.” She sounded like a child; making Jacob chuckle and making me crack a smile.

“Look, honey, I want to help you,” he said. “Now, let me see the cut.”

She sighed, knowing she wasn’t going to win the fight, and held out her hand for him. He looked over the cut, and then placed a small kiss on it, smiling up at her. Her cheeks were tainted pink. Bella beamed and took a step closer to Jacob, placing a hand behind his neck. Jacob grinned and leaned down to kiss Bella. They were kissing in the middle of the kitchen. Soon, Bella had both of her arms around his neck, on her toes to reach his height. And his head was inclined to reach her, his hands on her waist.

It was then when I had to pull out of his mind. I didn’t notice the rain pouring down on me. I didn’t care at the moment. I only knew that my love was with another man and it had hurt more than having to let go of her in the first place. It hurt like nothing else in the world.

What really hurt was that Jacob could touch her and feel her and hold her close without taking extra caution and making sure he was strong enough not to kill her. He could look at her blood without the insane thirst of wanting to feed off of her. What hurt more, though, was that he was so much better for her in so many ways. He could keep her safe, because of his protective nature, and he could give her what she wanted, like sweet, hot kisses and… kids.

I jumped down from the tree and took off in a sprint back to the house, the rain pouring down and soaking my clothes. I finally got into the house and felt weak. Useless, even. I changed into some dryer clothes, and then grabbed my cell phone, dialing.

“Hey, Edward,” Alice said cheerfully. “How’s Bella?”

I took a deep breath. “Alice, I...” I could hardly find the words. I knew she would ask me all about it, but was it right to tell her? I’d be sounding like a teenage girl, gossiping to her friends. But, regardless, I needed someone to talk to... Wow, I did sound like a teenage girl.

“What is it,” Alice asked, sounding more concerned. “Is she hurt? Dead?”

“No, she’s…” I gulped. “She’s happy.”

Alice asked, confused, “Isn’t that a good thing?”

“Alice, she’s… she’s with another guy.”

She was silent for a minute. “I’m going over there,” she said abruptly.

“No, you don’t have to-”

“I want to, Edward. Jasper and I will be there in a couple hours.”

I sighed. “Fine.”

I hung up and sighed; this was going to be a long visit.
