Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.

I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.

It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.

On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.

"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.

"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.

"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.

"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...

"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."

The way he said it was almost rude.

"Okay," I agreed

"Bye, Bella."

The line disconnected.

"Bye," I muttered.

Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.

I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Stomach flu," he finally said.

"Yes," I moaned.

"You need something?" he asked.

"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."

"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.

I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.

It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.

"Still alive?"

"Sort of," I said.

"Do you want anything?"

"No, thanks."

He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.

"Mike feels better," he called up to me.

Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.

I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember  moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.

I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.

My twenty-four hours were up.

I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.

As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.

Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.

"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.

"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."

"I feel horrible," he whispered.

"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."

"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."

"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."

"You were sick?" he asked dully.

"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."

"That's good." His voice was dead.

"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.

I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."

"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.

"No. This is something else."

"What's wrong with you?"

"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."

The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.

"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"

"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.

"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.

He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."

"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.

"Call me when you feel better."

"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.

He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.

"I'll see you soon," I finally said.

"Wait for me to call," he said again.

"Okay... Bye, Jacob."

"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.

***End of New Moon Excerpt***

The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.

But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.

As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.

I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?

I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

Chapter 13

Bella's POV

I wasn’t exactly sure how my face probably looked right now, but I felt in complete shock. There standing at the doorway was a familiar person, one who probably would have scared the bejeezus out of me before I was with Jacob. But then I saw those golden eyes and her pixie-like features.

“Alice,” I asked in disbelief.

She managed a grin. “Hey, Bella,” she said, her voice the same way I remember it. She was still as stylish as always, wearing a light gray tank top tucked under her purple waist skirt, gray wedge heels, and a purple penguin Betsey Johnson necklace. It was a really… Alice outfit.

I was quiet for a second, taking in that she was actually here in front of me, and this wasn’t one of my crazy dreams where the Cullens came back. Before I could ask anything, she asked me softly, “Can I come in?” I nodded slowly. She came skipping in, as if she hadn’t left and we were still friends. Were we still friends? I wasn’t completely sure.

She made her way to the couch and sat herself down, smoothing out her skirt. I sat next to her, a million questions running through my head, and asked, “What are you doing here, Alice? Is Edward here? Is Jasper here with you? Are the rest of you coming back? I thought-”

“Calm down, Bella,” Alice said, laughing her wind chime laugh. “One question at a time.”

I felt my cheeks burn. “Sorry. Well, I guess the first thing to say is that… I really missed you.” And I honestly wasn’t lying. I love hanging around with Jake and the pack because they were all so funny and so alike, but I also missed the time that I had spent with the Cullens, too.

She smiled and hugged me. “I missed you, too, Bella,” she said. I flinched the moment her cold arms made contact with my skin. I had been around Jacob so long; I forgot how cold vampires are.

When she pulled back, I saw a hint of guilt on her face before she turned back into the prancing pixie she is.

I asked, “Now, first question: What are you doing here? I mean, not that I don’t want you here, but there has to be a reason you came back after months of being away.”

Alice smiled and said, “I’ve been meaning to visit you, but I never really found time. I’ve been so back and forth through states and countries with Jasper, the months seemed to pass by in a blur.”

I asked, “What were you doing that was keeping you so busy?”

Then, Alice told me about her trying to find out the history of her human life. She had been trying to find out whatever she could about her human life. Her school, her parents, relatives. She found that her family had sent her to an asylum because she saw premonitions. And that was why she didn’t remember her transformation, because it was always so dark. A worker in the asylum, who was a vampire, changed her because James had been after her. She believes that the worker might have been in love with her, but she wasn’t so sure. She said that she had found her tombstone and found out the day she was born and the day she “died.” She said that she also had a sister and her niece, Cynthia, her sister’s daughter, still lives in Biloxi, Mississippi.

After she told her exciting tale, I said, “Wow. That’s… amazing. And sad.”

Alice laughed. “It’s not exactly the lifestyle I would have picked out myself, but it’s what happened.”

“Is Jasper here with you,” I asked her.

She nodded. “He just went out hunting, you know, just in case you get too close.”

I shifted uncomfortably on the couch; last time I had gotten too close, I was flung back to a wall and I fell onto glass vases. Alice put a hand on my shoulder comfortingly.

“It wasn’t your fault,” she said, giving me a half smile.

“It’s not Jasper’s fault either,” I retorted.

Alice sighed. We were both quiet for a second. “So,” I started, a little hesitantly. “Is Edward here?”

She replied to the nest question hesitantly, “That’s what I’ve been meaning to talk to you about. It’s also the other reason why I’m here.”

I furrowed my eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

She pursed her lips again, and then said, “Well, the thing is that he’s been in town for a while.” I looked at her incredulously. Before I could say anything, she continued, “He’s been staying at our old house since yesterday. He came to check if you were okay. He came and checked on you before, and he swore to himself that this would be the last day he would check on you. I don’t know all the details, but he called me and I came here.”

I was speechless. Edward had been checking up on me? And he was here checking up on me now? What could be so distressing that he had to call Alice to come here? Nothing really had happened since Edward left except…

No. That couldn’t be why Edward came back. I mean, he was the one who left me in the first place, right? Did he expect me not to find love in another person while he was gone? When he left, Jacob was my crutch. Jacob got me back to my feet and brought the love and life back in me, right when I thought both ideas were completely pointless and painful. Jacob brought me out of my depression and, eventually, Imprinted on me.

“Why did he call you,” I asked Alice.

She said softly, “He saw you with another guy.”

My eyebrows creased. “Why would he care if I was with another guy? Didn’t he want me to live a happy, normal life?” Mentally, I scratched out normal; my life was anything but normal. I was dating a werewolf and my vampire ex-boyfriend had been stalking me without me knowing about it.

Alice suddenly rolled her eyes and groaned. “Isn’t it obvious, Bella? Edward’s still in love with you!” Again, I was speechless. She sighed in frustration. “Bella, Edward never wanted to leave you in the first place. He only left because of what happened at your birthday party. And the whole part about him saying that he didn’t love you? He was lying about that. He knew he had to say it to get you to let him leave.” I could hardly process in my head what Alice was saying. Edward lied to me?

Before I could think anything else, there was a knock on the door. Without thinking about it, I got up and answered the door, only to find a smiling Jacob there. Oh, crap.

Jacob’s POV

I walked up to the steps of Bella’s house, hurrying to get in because of the rain. I couldn’t wait to see her. I guess that’s what happens when you Imprint. You can hardly go hours without them. The door opened and out walked Bella. I smiled at her; I expected a warm smile and maybe a hug and kiss, but, instead, her eyes widened in surprise.

“Jake,” she said, sounding alarmed.

I was about to say ask her why she looked so freaked out, but the moment I inhaled, I smelt it. That burning bleach smell in my nose. Instinctively, I grabbed Bella and held her close.

“Get in your car,” I ordered.

“Why,” she asked, confused.

I whispered, “Vampire. I can smell one in here.” I nuzzled my face into her hair, then flinched and backed away. “You have their scent on you,” I said suspiciously.

Bella’s face was flushed. “Um, well, here’s the thing… the vampire you smell? It’s kind of… one of my friends.”

I frowned; when will Bella learn that some vampires aren’t her friends, they’re actually just out to eat her? “Another vampire friend? Don’t tell me they’re like the vampire with the dreads. I really don’t think those guys are-”

“Not them,” she said quickly. “It’s… it’s Alice Cullen.”

At first, I let the word process in my head. Then, I thought about that leech, Edward, and how he broke my Bella’s heart. I felt my fists clench and my arms start to tremble as I closed my eyes in anger. “He’s back isn’t he,” I asked, my voice shaking.

I felt Bella’s fingers intertwined with mine and squeezed. “Jake, you need to calm down-”

“Answer the question,” I commanded fiercely. That’s when I heard it. That little wince she tried to hide because she was scared of me. I looked down at her and the hurt hadn’t completely left her face. I started taking in deep breaths through my nose, calming down. For Bella’s sake.

Once I was in complete control of myself again, I pulled her into my arms, hugging her tightly. “I’m sorry,” I whispered to her.

“It’s okay,” she whispered back.

I pulled back just enough to look at her. “No, it’s not. I could have hurt you, Bella. If I lost it, I could’ve hurt you. You know what happened to Emily.”

She nodded. “I know. But she still forgave Sam. Just like I would forgive you.”

I sighed; Bella was much too forgiving and I didn’t deserve it. Then, her lips kissed my cheek.

“I’m fine. That’s what matters,” she said. I decided not to push it, knowing how stubborn she is, and nodded.

“Ahem,” a voice said. I looked over and saw the psychic vamp leaning against the wall, looking at Bella like she did some sort of crime; the leech didn’t look taller than maybe four and a half feet, which was odd for her to be so small. I stared at the bloodsucker with narrowed eyes; just because Bella trusts her doesn’t mean I have to.

“So,” she said. “It’s bad enough you were in love with a vampire, and now you’re dating a werewolf, too? As if you weren’t in enough danger with the vampire.”

“She’s perfectly safe with me,” I retorted. “I’ll keep her safe, unlike that bloodsucker who nearly let his brother take a bite out of Bella.”

“Last time I checked, I wasn’t talking to you, dog. At least I know why I haven’t seen Bella in my visions lately. Your kinda are hiding her from my visions.”

“Both of you stop,” Bella commanded, unfolding herself from my arms and standing between me and the vamp. “I don’t want any fighting between you, too.” I stayed quiet, but only because Bella asked me to. I was surprised when the other vamp stayed quiet, too. Bella sighed and ran a hand through her hair. “Now, to answer your question, Jacob, yes, Edward’s back.”

My fists clenched again. But, this time I wasn’t as angry. “He’s here for you, isn’t he? To get you back?” I recognized my voice to be mixed with anger and… pain.

Bella turned back to the vampire, as if asking the same question. “Actually, I’m not exactly sure.”

The vampire shrugged. “All I know is that he seemed pretty distressed over the phone and he told me that you were with another guy.”

“Why would he have to call you? I mean, he didn’t expect for me just to wait around for him, right?”

“Like I said, I don’t know much.” Then, she continued you with a soft voice, “He still loves you, Bella.”

I expected myself to boil up with anger, maybe even phase unintentionally. But instead, I felt my heart tear. Bella had been in love with that bloodsucker. They were in love. Our Imprint doesn’t make Bella love me anymore than it would make her love him. Bella turned to me with an apologetic face.

Then, she turned back to the vampire. “Well… the thing is that… Jacob sorta… Imprinted on me. So, technically, I can’t be with Edward, let alone love him.”

At first, the vampire’s jaw dropped slightly. Then, a couple seconds later, she blinked and took out her phone from her purse.

“Who are you calling,” Bella asked as the vampire dialed the numbers.

She pressed the phone to her ear and replied, “Edward. He needs to know about this.”

“No,” Bella nearly screamed. Before Bella could take the phone away from her hand, the vampire flashed to the other room. I groaned in frustration and I had to admit, it made me smile a little

I walked forward silently and took her hand. She turned to me and hurt crossed her face; I know how much this was hurting her, having her ex-boyfriend come back for her. She wrapped her arms around my waist comfortingly. I hugged her, back, kissing the top of her head.

“I’m not going to lose you to that bloodsucker,” I whispered to her. “I don’t want him breaking your heart again.”

She got on my toes and pressed my forehead to hers. I sighed, closing my eyes and listening to her sweet voice. “You’re not going to lose me, Jake. Remember? We’re Imprinted. We belong together.”

I half smiled and pressed my lips to hers. She kissed my back tenderly, as if proving to me that she wouldn’t let that bloodsucker take her away from me. And it actually gave me a little bit of hope.

I pulled away from our kiss, gently tracing my thumb over her soft lips, chuckling to myself. Her face turned pink; God, how I loved her blush.

The vampire walked back in and said quietly, “Edward’s on his way here.”

Bella and I looked at each other simultaneously. I sighed, knowing what I had to do to make sure she won’t end up with that parasite. Not again. “Fine,” I said. “I’m not leaving until we get this whole thing sorted out.”
