Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.
I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.
It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.
On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.
"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.
"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."
"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.
"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."
"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.
"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...
"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."
The way he said it was almost rude.
"Okay," I agreed
The line disconnected.
"Bye," I muttered.
Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.
I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Stomach flu," he finally said.
"Yes," I moaned.
"You need something?" he asked.
"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."
"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.
I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.
It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.
"Sort of," I said.
"Do you want anything?"
He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.
"Mike feels better," he called up to me.
Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.
I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.
I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.
My twenty-four hours were up.
I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.
As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.
Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.
"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.
"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."
"I feel horrible," he whispered.
"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."
"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."
"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."
"You were sick?" he asked dully.
"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."
"That's good." His voice was dead.
"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.
I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."
"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.
"No. This is something else."
"What's wrong with you?"
"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."
The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.
"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"
"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.
"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.
He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."
"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.
"Call me when you feel better."
"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.
He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.
"I'll see you soon," I finally said.
"Wait for me to call," he said again.
"Okay... Bye, Jacob."
"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.
***End of New Moon Excerpt***
The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.
But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.
As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.
I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?
I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

ooooooooooooooooooo......POST MORE SOON!

I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! update soon!!!!!!!
On cripes Victoria's back. What are they gonna do and when is the next chapter gonna be up?
The red-head. She was here. And she was going after Bella. Again. I looked at Bella instinctively, her face in complete shock as she turned to me, too. In that moment, I saw that she looked scared. She looked genuinely, absolutely scared. I could feel her hand shaking in mine, just slightly, but enough for me to pick up.
The moment the words clicked in my head, I stood up, my hand still grasped in Bella’s firmly. “Where is she,” I asked.
The short vampire, who seemed oblivious of the fact that we were practically enemies, answered straight away. “She’s in Canada right now. You can get to her if you hurry.” I was glad Alice gave me information, considering Edward was right there.
Edward looked at her, his forehead creased. “What? What do you mean if he gets to her? Just call Jasper and he and I will take care of Victoria.”
I rolled my eyes and snorted. “Please. We can take her down easy.”
He retorted, staring daggers at me, “How long has she been in Forks? And yet you and the pack of mutts haven’t killed her yet?”
“She’s quick and deceptive. Not easy to catch, but not something we can’t handle.”
“Considering that I know her motives, I’m sure we could kill her faster than you with the help of your pack can ever do, so Bella won’t have to worry anymore.”
“She wouldn’t have anything to worry about if you hadn’t come here and made her and my life more complicated in the first place. If you remember right, you’re the whole reason we exist. My being a werewolf is your fault just as much as it is mine.”
“If I weren’t here, then Victoria would have gotten to Bella and taken her without a hitch.” His statement made not only himself flinch, but made me wince; thankfully, I got my composure back into place. He continued, “You should be thankful that Alice was lucky enough to sense her.”
I growled back, “We were just fine without you here and we don’t need you here now. One of the pack members are out there, patrolling around Forks and La Push, making sure she doesn’t come near the town.”
“Then why don’t I hear some sort of call?”
“You tell me. You probably got hungry on the way here and killed one of the pack members for all I know.”
“If there’s any pack member that’s going to be murdered by me today, it’s going to be you. So I suggest you keep your cool before someone gets hurt.”
“And if I don’t back down? You know I’m capable of killing you. You know-”
“Stop it,” Bella yelled, putting a hand on each of our chests. I hadn’t noticed that we had gotten so close, in each other’s faces. Edward kept his narrowed gaze on me.
Bella continued, “If you guys hadn’t noticed, there’s a vampire on her way here out to kill someone- I’m not exactly sure who anymore- and we need to act fast.”
I looked down into those beautiful brown eyes of her and sighed. I knew she was right. We were wasting our time here, arguing and ready to kill each other, when there was the red-head to be dealt with. I looked back at the vampire and took a couple steps back, glaring at Edward with distrust. He did the same, though I knew he was rummaging through my brain.
Bella sighed in relief and ran and hand through her hair. “There’s only one compromise to this situation: both of you are going to have to work together.”
Simultaneously, Edward and I shot her unwilling looks. The last thing on my list of things I will do for Bella would be work with the parasite that broke her heart. As I thought about that, I had a brief flashback of how she was before I became a werewolf; that first day she came to see me, I saw past her fake smile and saw the girl who was broken inside, broken beyond repair. Every time I’d mention their name, she’d hug herself tightly, like she was going to fall into pieces at any moment. Seeing her like that… it was heartbreaking.
A low growl sounded from Edward. “Can you attempt to keep your thoughts to yourself,” he asked, clearly annoyed.
So he could hear me. Good. I hope you heard that, I told him mentally. You could see how much you hurt her. He growled again.
Bella snapped at us, “Hey, both of you, focus.”
Then, Alice said, “Edward, call Jasper and tell him to watch Victoria. She’s near the national border line by now. Jacob, you call your pack and wait by the border so you can get her by surprise. Bella, you might wanna stay here.”
I nodded at her, but I wasn’t completely okay with that entire plan. More than anything did I want Bella close in sight, so that I could make sure she was okay, but it was selfish of me to want it. I knew it would be safer if she was here with Alice, out of the bloodsucker’s sight.
Edward looked at me with a hard face and nodded. Immediately, he got on his cell phone and dialed, talking quickly and quietly into the receiver.
As I was about to jogging towards the door, a hand grabbed mine from behind. I turned and Bella’s eyes met mine. She looked at me with worried eyes. I knew what she was thinking; she didn’t want me to go either. I pulled her into my arms, holding her close. She let her chest rest against my head and held on tight.
I kissed the top of her head. “I’ll be back before you know it,” I whispered.
She said back, “I’m so glad you’re working together. Thank you.”
I looked down at her. “I’m only doing this for you. You know that, right?”
Her cheeks tainted pink. “I know. Thank you.”
I kissed her softly on her lips and sighed. “I have to go,” I said reluctantly.
She sighed, too, and nodded, kissing me once more. “Come back soon,” she requested.
“I will,” I replied, starting to walk to the door again.
“Be careful,” she called as my hand met the doorknob.
“Sure, sure,” I called back, chuckling as I closed the door behind me.
I ran into the nearby forest, kicking off my shoes and shorts. I phased and hid my clothes near a tree.
Jake, Embry’s voice said in my head, clearly surprised. It’s not your shift now, is it?
No, it isn’t, but we’ve got a big problem. I replayed the meeting with the vampires and the part when Alice had the vision of Victoria here.
That’s not good, Embry said.
Thanks, Captain Obvious. Now, howl and call the pack. We’re gonna need everyone here. Plus, we’ve got two extra helpers.
Got it, he replied. Then, he lifted his muzzle and howled, calling the members of the pack.
When he quieted, he said, So, it must have been really awkward talking to your Imprint’s ex.
I shifted uncomfortably. It wasn’t very awkward… It was more like an “I-seriously-want-to-kill-you” feeling.
Embry laughed. Oh, well if that’s all, he said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes. Just get your furry butt moving to the national border.
Fine, he said, still chuckling as he started running.
I decided to ignore him as I ran alongside him. The whole time I ran, I thought about Bella. I was worried. What if the red-head got past us and went straight to Bella? But Alice was with Bella, right? I wasn’t sure if I trusted that parasite yet. She’s smaller then a thirteen year old girl! How the hell was she supposed to keep my Bella safe?
You know what I hear, Embry asks, amused. All I hear is “Bella, Bella. Oh crap, Bella. What about Bella?” Jeesh. Please let me know if I get that annoying if I Imprint.
I rolled my eyes again. Shut up. And, don’t worry; I’ll be sure to tell you. He laughed.
Soon, the thoughts in our heads were accompanied by three others.
What’s the deal, Paul asked.
Man, I was taking a nap, Jared complained.
Come on, guys, Sam said. We have to focus.
What he said reminded me with Bella told Edward and me to focus. I shook the thought out of my head and said, Listen, guys, the vampires are back. But, they were something useful. One of the vampires is a psychic and she saw the red head coming towards the land. They say she’s near the Canadian border.
How do you know she’s not lying, Jared suggested.
I thought about that. Actually, I didn’t know if she was lying. But I guess, for the sake of Bella, I’m going to have to trust Alice… and Edward.
I don’t, I replied honestly. But I guess we’re going to have to see and find out. Come on.
Embry and I, having a head start, we closer to the border than the others, but just as we were going to make it to the border, we found Edward standing there, about a good twenty miles away from the border.
“Jasper’s gonna lead her here,” he explained once we came to a stop. “Once she sees us here, she’ll see that she’s surrounded and she’ll have no choice but to run.
Both Embry and I nodded. Soon the pack joined us and we all stayed hidden, waiting for her. Sadly enough, Edward and I were hidden close to each other, so there was an awkward silence that went between us.
You know, you’re the reason she keeps coming back, I finally told Edward.
“What do you mean,” he asked, his eyes focused on the task at hand.
Bella said that you killed her mate and no she’s come back for you. You’re the one she wants to kill. That’s why she keeps coming back.
Edward was quiet for a moment. Then, he said, “I had never really thought about it that way.”
Well, I just hope you know that, if one of us dies, it’s on you. Then I added sarcastically, No pressure.
“Gee, thanks,” Edward said back.
Both of us chuckled, then immediately stop when we heard each other. Were we actually… cooperating? I couldn’t be sure.
Just then, she came into sight. She was just yards away from us. Perfect. But, suddenly, realization seemed to strike her face and she changed direction, running the other way. Crap!
Go, Sam commanded as we all ran after her.
She ran so quick, we could hardly see her. Before long, she was out of our sight, leading us to the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but trees and shrubbery. We all looked around, trying to hear an inkling of some sort of sound.
Then, Edward said, “She’s in the trees.”
Immediately, he and the other vampire – I forgot his name – started climbing the trees. Since there was nothing we could really do, we waited.
After a couple minutes, they came back down. “She’s long gone,” Edward said ruefully.
Everyone groaned simultaneously.
“She’s different than she was before,” Edward said, more to himself than to everyone else. “She’s deceiving and much, much quicker.”
What do we do now, Embry asked.
What we always do after we lose, Paul replied. Go home.
Everyone mumbled in agreement and started leaving. Edward, Jasper, and I were the only ones left.
I cleared my throat. Alice’s vision did help, I admitted reluctantly. We were ready for her… we just weren’t fast enough.
Edward chuckled. “All the more reason to stay here.”
You’re staying? He nodded.
Well this was just great. My Imprint’s ex-boyfriend was staying here. And I had no doubt in my mind that he was going to fight for her back.
And I was going to fight twice as hard as he was.
First comment...yeah me
