Chapter 1 (New Moon, Chapter 9: Third Wheel, page 219-224, just after Jacob left home from the movies)
I leaned against the kitchen counter, my hand inches from the phone, and tried to wait patiently. thought of the strange look on Jacob's face before he drove away, and my fingers started drumming against the counter. I should have insisted on driving him home.
I watched the clock as the minutes ticked by. Ten. Fifteen. Even when I was driving, it only took fifteen minutes, and Jacob drove faster than I did. Eighteen minutes. I picked up the phone and dialed.
It rang and rang. Maybe Billy was asleep. Maybe I'd dialed wrong. I tried again.
On the eighth ring, just as I was about to hang up, Billy answered.
"Hello?" he asked. His voice was wary, like he was expecting bad news.
"Billy, it's me, Bella- did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."
"He's here," Billy said tonelessly.
"He was supposed to call me." I was a little irritated. "He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."
"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now." Billy sounded distant. I realized he must want to be with Jacob.
"Let me know if you need any help," I offered. "I could come down." I thought of Billy, stuck in his chair, and Jake fending for himself...
"No, no," Billy said quickly. "We're fine. Stay at your place."
The way he said it was almost rude.
"Okay," I agreed
The line disconnected.
"Bye," I muttered.
Well, at least he'd made it home. Oddly, I didn't feel less worried. I trudged up the stairs, fretting. Maybe I would go down before work tomorrow to check on him. I could take soup- we had to have a can of Campbell's around here somewhere.
I realized all such plans were canceled when I woke up early- my clock said for thirty- and sprinted to the bathroom. Charlie found me there a half hour later, lying on the floor, my cheek pressed against the cold edge of the bathtub.
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Stomach flu," he finally said.
"Yes," I moaned.
"You need something?" he asked.
"Call the Newtons for me, please," I instructed hoarsely. "Tell them I have what Mike had, and that I can't make it in today. Tell them I'm sorry."
"Sure, no problem," Charlie assured me.
I spent the rest of the day on the bathroom floor, sleeping for a few hours with my head on a crumpled up towel. Charlie claimed that he had to work, but I suspected that he just wanted access to a bathroom. He left a glass of water on the floor beside me to keep me hydrated.
It woke me up when he came back home. I could see that it was dark in my room- after nightfall. He clumped up the stairs to check on me.
"Sort of," I said.
"Do you want anything?"
He hesitated, clearly out of his element. "Okay, then," he said, then he went back down to the kitchen. I heard the phone ring a few minutes later. charlie spoke to someone in a low voice for a moment, and then hung up.
"Mike feels better," he called up to me.
Well, that was encouraging. He'd only gotten sick eight hours or so before me. Eight more hours. The thought made my stomach turn, and I pulled myself up to lean over the toilet.
I fell asleep on the towel again, but when I woke up I was in my bed and it was light outside my window. I didn't remember moving; Charlie must have carried me to my room- he'd also put the glass of water on my bedside table. I felt parched. I chugged it down, thought it tasted funny from sitting stagnant all night.
I got up slowly, trying not to trigger the nausea again. I was weak, and my mouth tasted horrible, but my stomach felt fine. I looked at my clock.
My twenty-four hours were up.
I didn't push it, eating nothing but saltine crackers for breakfast. Charlie looked relieved to see me recovered.
As soon as I was sure that I wasn't going to have to spend the day on the bathroom floor again, I called Jacob.
Jacob was the one who answered, but when I heard his greeting I knew he wasn't over it.
"Hello?" His voice was broken, cracking.
"Oh, Jake," I groaned sympathetically. "You sound horrible."
"I feel horrible," he whispered.
"I'm so sorry I made you go out with me. This sucks."
"I'm glad I went." His voice was still a whisper. "Don't blame yourself. This isn't your fault."
"You'll get better soon," I promised. "I woke up this morning and I was fine."
"You were sick?" he asked dully.
"Yes, I got it, too. But I'm fine now."
"That's good." His voice was dead.
"So you'll probably be better in a few hours," I encouraged.
I could barely hear his answer. "I don't think I have the same thing you did."
"Don't you have the stomach flu?" I asked, confused.
"No. This is something else."
"What's wrong with you?"
"Everything," he whispered. "Every part of me hurts."
The pain in his voice was nearly tangible.
"What can I do, Jake? What can I bring you?"
"Nothing. You can't come here." He was abrupt. It reminded me of Billy the other night.
"I've already been exposed to whatever you have," I pointed out.
He ignored me. "I'll call you when I can. I'll let you know when you can come down again."
"I've got to go," he said with sudden urgency.
"Call me when you feel better."
"Right," he agreed, and his voice had a strange, bitter edge.
He was silent for a moment. I was waiting for him to say goodbye, but he waited too.
"I'll see you soon," I finally said.
"Wait for me to call," he said again.
"Okay... Bye, Jacob."
"Bella," he whispered my name, and then hung up the phone.
***End of New Moon Excerpt***
The rest of the day, I tried to keep myself busy with chores and homework. I even called the Newtons to tell them I would be at work tomorrow, just because I couldn't find anything else to do.
But, even though I tried my hardest to keep myself busy, I couldn't stop thinking about Jacob. He sounded so sick on the phone and it hurt me to hear him in pain when there was nothing I could do about it. I wasn't allowed to come over until Jacob's call, but I could help but wonder if I should go down there.
As the day dragged on, it was finally nightfall and I decided to hit the sack early. As I climbed into the bed, I still thought about Jake. I needed to see him soon, to make sure he was okay, to see if he needed anything at all. I decided to go check on him tomorrow, at least call to see if he needed anything.
I heard a tap on my window. I completely froze and didn't dare look out my window. Could it be?
I slowly turned and looked at my window. My eyes widened when I saw a pebble tap my window once again. I pursed my lips. If he was here, he would have opened the window without any hesitation. I got up slowly and walked over to my window. Another pebble tapped against my window, just a little bit louder. I opened my window and looked down at the huge dark figure. At first, I couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw it wave and recognized it at once.

*** Written by me :) ***
As I ran into the woods and slipped off my shorts, I couldn’t keep my mind off of what Bella had told me earlier today. That bloodsucker that he could just come back and decide that he wants Bella back? Even after he knows that she’s already mine? As if I would let that happen.
I phased and was immediately accompanied by familiar “voices” in my head.
She’s by the cliffs now, Leah yelled, showing us the image of the redhead running towards the cliff’s edge.
We can catch her, Paul said encouragingly (I think hungrily is more of the right word).
Hey Jake, you made it, Seth said happily.
Seth, focus, I replied.
Sam barked out orders, Don’t let her get away this time!
Are the Cullens helping at all, I asked, almost a snarl.
Yeah, they’re a couple miles ahead of us, Embry informed me. They’re right behind her.
Yeah, dude, chill, Jared says. What’s got your fur up your butt?
I just growl but then a second of an image flashes through my mind – just long enough for the guys to see how pissed off I really was.
No wonder you’re so irritated, Leah said, then snickered. Well, more irritated than usual.
Shut up, Leah.
Guys, focus, Sam ordered.
And just as he said that, we all started to move forward, faster. I could practically smell the Cullens’ scents now. And I’m sure that filthy bloodsucker can read my mind.
But I don’t plan on saying anything to him. Not yet.
I finally see her fiery red hair flowing as she runs in front of us. She’s a fast runner, I’ll give her that. But it’s fourteen against one. There’s no way she can get past us.
That’s the spirit, Jake, Seth encouraged.
I sped up from behind and passed up the Cullens, so close to her that I could smell her awful vamp stench. But I couldn’t think about that right now. It’s her fault that my Bella’s so scared and she was going to pay. She won’t scare my Bella much longer.
Suddenly, Leah came up from behind me, running just a little faster than I was. Before I knew it, she and the redhead were running side by side at the same pace. Leah growled and her legs tensed up. Focus on the hunt, she thought to herself. Then I saw in her head what she planned to do.
Leah, no, I screamed, but I was too late.
Leah pounced at the bloodsucker, teeth bared and ready to kill. But, the parasite was faster. She outstretched one arm and threw Leah back against a tree. Hard. So hard that I heard a crack from Leah’s bones and from the tree, which slowly fell down onto its side. We all heard the wince and crying from her.
Seth screamed, Leah! and ran back to her, along with Sam and the Cullen doctor. What was his name? Carl?
I thought about going back, but Sam thought, No, keep going. We’ll make sure she’s fine.
I was hesitant, but then decided it was best to follow the alpha’s orders. I pushed my legs to run faster, seeing as how the whole incident threw the rest of us off. Now, it was only the Cullens, (minus the doctor) Paul, Embry, Jared, and I. We were starting to get closer to her once again.
But before we could even get close to her, she flung herself off a cliff, and we came to an abrupt stop. I cursed silently in my head. It was just like that first night we tried to get her.
The night I told Bella what I was.
The night I Imprinted on her.
That reminded me. I had some business to attend to.
I turned around to Edward. What the hell man, I thought angrily. Edward’s dark eyes looked up at me, probably already knowing what I was going to say. You think you can just come back expecting Bella to still be in love with you? And when you find out she doesn’t, you go around saying that you’re gonna steal her away from me? My Imprint?
By now, I didn’t care about the guys around me or the fact that I was completely outnumbered by a bunch of parasites. I just wanted an explanation and I wanted to beat the crap out of that vampire.
Edward sighed, like he didn’t have the time to hear this. “Jacob, look-”
No, you look. Back off. You try anything funny with her and I won’t even stop to think about ripping your head off. Because you just have to face the fact that she loves me now. And I love her. Which means that you better keep your grimy hands off her before I tear your body limb from limb and send you to hell.
Edward clenched his jaw, but then relaxed. “I didn’t come back here expecting that she’d love me. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t still love her. I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let that stop me from trying to win her heart back.”
I felt my body trembling and I wanted so badly to rip his body up with my bare hands. You don’t even know what hell you put her through, I thought mostly to myself. Then, I started to remember when Bella first came to me. Her face was so pale and sunken, like she hadn’t eaten in days. She looked so fragile and breakable. It was hard to hug her without knowing is she’d break or not. She looked… lifeless…
I heard a small wince and it broke my thoughts. I looked up at Edward, who had a look of sadness on his face. Were my thoughts bringing him pain? I started to think about when, every time I’d mention him or the Cullens, she hugged her chest tightly, like she was going to fall into pieces at any second.
“Stop, Jacob,” Edward spat through his teeth, but his eyes were full of sorrow.
Why should I, I asked. You might as well get a good look at the damage you did. She wasn’t herself. It was like part of her died. But I made her feel better. I make her happy. And what do you do? You just remind her of her biggest mistake.
Before anyone said anything, I walked past him and started heading back to where Leah was. I sprinted there and, when I got deep enough into the forest, phased and threw my shorts on. I ran forward to the place where the tree had fallen. The only one there was Sam, waiting.
“How’s Leah,” I asked.
Sam sighed. “She’s hurt. Badly. But Carlisle’s trying to help her. They took her to the Cullen house to help her there.”
I sighed. “Don’t expect me to visit. It’s nothing personal, but I don’t think I’d be invited there anyway.”
“Yeah, I heard the whole thing,” Sam said. “It was a little harsh, but I would have done the same if it were Emily.”
“I know.” Then, I looked towards where the beach was.
Sam must’ve known what I was thinking because he said, “GO and get Bella. Let her know she’s safe for right now.”
I looked at him and nodded. “Thanks.”
I didn’t give him a chance to answer back because I was already off. I wanted to see Bella so badly, it almost hurt.
Don’t worry, I thought to myself. She’s there, waiting for you.
The thought almost made my smile.
First of all, I would like to point out that I'M THE FIRST COMMENT! Take that, you silly readers!
Second of all, I can't believe you haven't updated since Feb. 8! I'm shocked.
Third of all, I love this chapter! Jacob was like "She wasn’t herself. It was like part of her died. But I made her feel better. I make her happy. And what do you do? You just remind her of her biggest mistake." And Edward was like having a moment where you couldn't respond fast enough and the other guy left you standing there like an idiot. Complete LOL!
Keep posting, you guys/gals, or I'll take a pointy stick and start poking y'all!
