Scaring Crows
Once, I lived in the little town of Springfield Ohio. I had friends and what people would say "the perfect life". Things changed so quickly when I turned 13, my dad found a better job in Miami, Flordia. We moved and with a flash, my life changed. Unlike most people, I hated Miami. When I moved, I lost my best friend. To me, thats the worst thing to lose in life.
Chapter One : Mikaylas POV
The waves were crashing onto the sandy beach by my house. The smell of my mother cooking filled the entire house. Summer was almost over, and I would be starting my senior year. My mother called me down into the kitchen, she said we needed to talk. I headed into the polished room designed with an ocean theme. Standing over the stove, was my mother. She turned around, revealing her baby bump through her polka-dotted apron. My father entered the room, poured himself a cup of coffee and settled at the table with the newspaper.
After my mother prepared breakfast, she settled down at the table along with my father.
"Your father and I have something to talk to you about."
I took a seat while my mother poured me some orange juice.
"We've diecided to move back to Ohio. Right hunny?" My mother smacked my fathers paper to gain his attention. He coughed on a piece of bacon before nodding his head.
"The next two weeks we'll be packing everything up. Everything is being worked out. You just do your own thing, and we'll be back in Ohio in no time."
After breakfast, I collected some empty boxes from the garage and started helping pack odds and ends around the house. I've always hated Miami. The feeling of moving back to Ohio and being with my best friend again was great!
Three Weeks Later
We arrived into my home town and sadly I could say, nothing really changed. It was still the ghetto city it was years ago. Surprisingly though, it had shaped up a tad. The neighborhood that I had once lived in was what you would call 'The North Side'. This time we would be living in more of a middle-class area, and close to the high-school.
The first couple of days into the new house, I helped unpack in just about every room but my own. First day we got everything into the house and move boxes to their designated rooms. My father already has a job set up when we arrive into town, so he was gone at work alot. My mother slept most of the time but she couldnt lift anyways. It is up to me to start the unpacking, and I do.
I start in the kitchen. Carefully, I unpack each china plate and plac them in the shelves. It practically takes all day. Then I start on the living room, I dont get much done before I pass out next to a some boxes and am woken by my father coming in late.
Things with my parents have not been good lately. Im surprised my mom is even having a baby with my father. I know my father gets off earlier than he gets home. Most likely he was out to some bar filled with cheap, flashy bottles of alchol, and people that have nothing better to do than get drunk.
Instead of him helping me unpack, he goes upstairs to bed. I am left unpacking by myself. That night, I finished the living room. I never thought it would be my position to do everything for my parents, but I do whatever I can to keep them from disputing. And if that is to unpack all the boxes for them, I will. Shortly after finish the living room, I head upstairs to my room. Nothing was unpacked. Boxes sat on the floor by a couple of windows, and my bed was on the opposite side of the room. All of my furniture was against the wall by the door. With me doing all the work in the house, I don't know when I would be able to start on my own room.
A couple of days later, I managed to unpack and fix up just about every room in the house. Even the babies room. I left the my parents room and my dads office for them.
The date on the calender reads: August 6, 2012. My mother wakes me up early and insists that I get dressed. After showering, and getting ready, my mother starts pulling me out the house. We board into our four-doored 2010 honda accord, and drove out the driveway. My mom does not tell me where we were going. Instead, she rolles down the window and smokes a ciggerette, the first one since she found she was pregnant. I don't try to stop her. I could tell she was on angry-pregnant-wife-rage.
We don't drive very long before we pulle into a street surronded by trees. It was like this for a couple of minutes, until the trees went away and houses started to appear. These weren't regular houses though. These were; inground pool, three-car garage, expensive car, million dollar homes. It is quiet in the neighborhood too, unlike around where we live. Finally we pulle in front of what I would call "The Best House in Springfield". We get out and walke up the door, my mother rings the bell. A tall, skinny lady with perfect curled hair and pearl earrings answered the door. She smiles big and hugs my mother. She is around my mothers age, maybe even younger. She invites my mother in, and doesn't even acknowledge me.
"Donna, dear! It's been so long. And look at the bump!" The lady says rubbing my mothers tummy.
"Yes, I'm due anytime. Louise, do you remember Mikayla?"
"Of course I do! Oh my look how big shes gotten!" Louise comes over and pinches my cheeks and smiles.
"Where's the rest of the family?" My mom asks.
"Bill's at work and Corbin, well. I'm not sure. But he'll be home for supper. You guy's should join us! We would be delighted!"
The rest of the day my mother and Louise either looked at cook books or gossiped about people my mom hasn't seen in years. I gave myself a tour of the house. It is a pretty large house. And everything is neat and pasty. Louise makes chicken salad and offerd me some. Of course I took it. Considering I skipped out on breakfast.
After I eat, I look around the house some more, and find my way to the library. It is like the rest of the house. Everything is open. Two large windows are on the other side of the room, revealing the entire back yard. I skim through the books, until I find one that sparks my interest. It is a red covered book called 'Supernaturals'. It was about people whom were believed to have super powers. I knew they most likely did have super powers and that these people were not crazy. This is because I have my own super power. Reading minds. Sometimes, it comes in handy. But most of the time, it hurts me. I loath my power.
After reading some of the book I leave the library and look around the house a little more. I find myself enetering a room unlike all the other rooms in the house. The walls are navy blue; posters of football teams and basketball teams cover the walls; medals and awards are placed along the walls; a 60-inch flat screen tv is mounted onto the wall and there is a king sized water bed. It is a room for a teenage god. Or goddess, with some proper changes. I take a seat on the bed, I've always wanted a water bed. Their were a couple of pictures on a night stand by the bed. One of the pictures show teenage boy in a football uniform and another with the same teenage boy in a basketball uniform with a pretty blonde.
"What are you doing in here?" I hear a deep voice say behind me.
Startled, I turn around to see the same boy from the pictures standing in front of me. He is much more charming in person than in pictures. He has short, ruffled dirty blonde hair, and dark brown eyes. He is wearing worn down nike tena-shoes, black basketball shorts that go down to his knees and a gray tee with cut off sleeves. His muscles are the most inviting thing about him. Broad shoulders, defined chest, perfect bicepts and even though I could not see them, I would think his abs had to be just as good. If I thought it wouldn't risk anything between us, I'd plant one on him right now. But I don't do that. Instead, I storm torwards his door to leave. But, he blocks me from exiting.
"I said, what are you doing in here?"
"Just looking for the bathroom." I say keeping my head down lowin fear of embassassment.
"Well, I dont see a shower in here! Stay out of my room." And he moves to let me through.
I quickly walked through the hallway and downstairs to the kitchen. I feared looking back, maybe he might bewatching me.
I join Louise and my mother in helping them prepare dinner. They cooked steaks and baked potatos while I set the table and make a salad. I never really help cook dinner at home. It was always something my mother does.
After awhile my father arrives and so did Louise's husband. His name is Bill. I do not pinpoint that it is him, but he knows who I was. He is tall and looks the same age as my dad. He asks about how my summer was, and if I enjoyed living in Miami. It really kept me busy while the ladies finished dinner. Once he is done asking me questions, he leaves to talk to my dad about guy stuff.
Louise calls everyone to the dining room for dinner. Louise sits at one end, Bill in the seat across from her. My mother and father sit on one side, and I sit on the other, by an empty chair.
"Oh that boy! Corbin dinner!" Louise yells as she puts the remaining food on the table.
I guess he doesn't hear the first time because she yells his name again. A couple minutes later he came struting in. Without hesitation, he takes the seat next to me. I realize the boy from upstairs is Corbin. My childhood best friend. The one I use to play in the the mud with as young children. He had changed tremendously. His teeth have straightened into a beautiful smile, his skin has become more tan and he has grown at least eight inches since I last saw him.
Louise serves everyone at the table and she takes my hand for a prayer, and everyone bows their heads. I notice Corbin didnt take my hand, or even put his hand out for me to grab. I let it go as he probably already thought I was a freak.
The meal was delish. The steak was perfectly cooked and the baked potato was great. All of our parents talk like they've known eachother their whole lives. As if we never had moved.
I cut my steak and took a nice bite. The spices overwhelm my mouth. My mother never made steak, so I wasn't use to eating it.
"So are you going to Springfield High, Mikayla?" Bill asked me.
"Yes." I say gulping down another bite of steak.
"Maybe Corbin can show you around." Louise says smiling.
"No Mom. Im pretty sure she's big enough to find herself around." He responds as he takes bite of his steak.
"Oh dont get your undies in a twist. Show her around. She doesn't bite. I promise." Louise was a kind woman, unlike her son. He is not the "Best Friend" I use to know. I really don't talk for the rest of the night. But instead I listen, mainly to Corbin's thoughts. Stuff like, "Why do I have to show her around." and "Shes a freak." Go through his mind. And he often thinks about a girl named Lindsey. Whomever that was.
After dinner Corbin and I are asked to wash dishes together. It turns out to be pretty simple. I wash, he drys and puts away the dished. For a wealthy family, I am quite shocked that they don't have a maid, or even a dishwasher.
"You don't have to show me around at school." I burst out of no where.
"I didn't plan on it." Corbin says putting a away a dried plate.
We finish washing dishes and head out to where out parents were. They are on a large wooden deck with a fire pit in the middle. The only light is coming from the fire, the lights inside and then pool. Louise has a photo album out showing my mom collections of pictures. They chuckle at times, probably from memories. My dad and Bill are sitting in lawn chairs talking about sports. Often, Louise shows me pictures of Corbin and I when we were little. She has tons of pictures of us. I know my mom has some, and they were even up in the old house back in Miami.
About eleven o'clock my mother announces we are to be leaving. I thank Louise for dinner and gave Bill a hug. He was quite a jolly man. My parents leave and head out to their cars.
"Bye Corbin." I say walking out the door. But, as Im exit the house, I recieve his stream of thoughts. The things I hear hurt me, but I ignore it. My once, best friend is now someone totally different. When we were moving back here I was so excited to see him. And now? Well, needless to say, I really don't care if I see him ever again.
Chapter 2: Corbin’s POV
A warm breeze of summer air soothes me as I keep my pace. The sound of my feet hitting the pavement fills my ears I as round a corner. “One more mile,” I think to myself. My breathing is in normal, as if I was taking a casual walk. But I am running. I pass a couple of more runners as I finish my final mile and I slow down to a walking speed. I look at my watch and stop the timer. Three miles in twenty minutes. I laugh at myself, knowing that I could do much faster. But I think it would scare people if all they saw was a flash of human fly by them. Yeah, I know. Think I am crazy? I thought I was too. But I can run incredibly fast. Faster than a speeding bullet. Kind of like superman, without the super. It is an incredible power, kind of like my amazing sight. Which, does give me an advantage when playing sports. Well, both of them do.
I walk through the parking lot till I find my red 2010 mustang that my parents bought for me on my seventeenth birthday. I get in and turn the car on as I grab my cell-phone out of the passenger seat. I look at it as notice that I have two text messages..
i>Come home, we are having the Prince’s over for dinner. Remember? Your best friend Mikayla’s family. -Mom. >
I shake my head and sigh. The Prince’s were family friends of ours. Well, they were basically family to us. Mikayla was my best friend as a child but things have changed. I have a beautiful girlfriend and I am far more popular than I used to be when she was around. Star quarter back for the football, the star point guard for the basketball team and a track star with multiple first place awards. The second one is from my beautiful girlfriend, Lindsey. Cheer captain, straight A student and president of the student council for our high-school for three years.
< Hey Sexy (: Want to come over tonight? My parents aren’t home. -Lindsey >
I smile at the thought of going over to her house, holding her close and watching movies in her room. I then realize that if I do not go home and have dinner with the Prince’s, my mom will kill me. I start to text Lindsey back.
i>Sorry love, but I have to stay home tonight. Mom is having friends over and she wants me to have dinner with them. >
I send it and start the car, roll down the windows, turn on the radio and begin driving home. It is almost the end of summer and I can not stop thinking about my last year of high-school. I have gotten a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky for Basketball and one from Ohio State for football. I still have not decided which I would like to go to.
I pull into the driveway after driving for about five minutes. A Honda Accord sits in front of the house. The Prince’s must already be here. I get out of the car and walk up towards the front door and go inside. My mom is talking to what must be Mikayla’s mom who looks to be pregnant. I throw my keys onto the counter and grab a water out of the fridge.
“Hey Hunny, how was your run?” My mom says with a smile.
“It was fine mom.” I say gulping down some of the water.
“You remember Mrs. Prince? Don’t you?” I look at Mrs. Prince, she has not changed at all in the five years that they have been gone. Sure, she has aged a little bit but still looks the same as she used too.
“Yeah, a little.” I wave at her to show her some kind of acknowledgement.
She smiles, “Well, I remember you and you have grown so much! So tall and handsome. I remember when you were a little boy playing in the mud with my daughter.”
I feel obligated to smile, so I do. “Thanks. Well, I am going to go upstairs and clean up a bit.”
“Okay sweetie.” My mom says patting me on the back.
I make my way upstairs into the bathroom. I ruffle my hair and look at myself in the mirror. My dark chocolate brown eyes looks back at me intensely. I smile at myself, knowing how good I look.
I then walk down the hallway and pass the library that we have in our house. My dad owns multiple jewelry stores across the United States and my mom is a doctor. So, as you can imagine, we have a lot of money and most of that gets spent on the house and well, me. I am an only child so I get spoiled a lot. It is not like they have anything else to spend their money on. So, why not spend it on me?
I decide to use my speed and race towards my room since there is no one else around. Just as I get there, I notice that my door is wide open. Which is not how I left it and my parents rarely ever go into my room. I stand at the opening and look in to see a girl, about five feet five inches tall. She has flowing brown hair and her skin tone is in between “Oh my god look at the albino,” and “She tans way too much.”
“What are you doing here?” I say in an angry voice.
My voice must startle as she jumps a little and turns around to face me. She looks me over, taking in what she sees. She then tries to leave but I block her from leaving the room.
“I said, what are you doing here?”
This time though, she responds but she keeps her head low, “Just looking for the bathroom.”
“Well, I don’t see a shower in here! Stay out of my room.” I push past here and throw my cell-phone onto my bed. I hear here rush down the hallway until she reaches the steps and I can no longer hear her.
I jump onto my water bed and the water moves beneath me. It reminds me of sitting on a surfboard out on the ocean. Except you are safe from sharks on my water bed. My phone begins to vibrate and pick it up and look at the message I have received.
i>Aw, spending time with mommy and daddy? (: We can do something tomorrow! Bye, I love you (: -Lindsey >
I smile and I start typing my reply.
i>It’s not just my mom and dad! They are having our stupid old family friends that moved away when I was still in middle school. Like, I don’t want to hang out with my lame friend from middle school. She was the reason I was not popular! Lol, Love you too (: >
I send it and throw my phone onto my bed. I look around at my room. Multiple awards and posters. A couple of pictures of me with Lindsey. My flat screen T.V on one of the walls. A giant window that shows a perfect backyard with a hot tub, pool, basketball court and my moms little garden. I hear my mother call my name but I ignore ii, hoping that she will forget about me and I can sneak out to go see Lindsey. Once I hear it a second time, I know that she will not forget. I do not use my speed and walk incredibly slow, trying to avoid this dinner.
To make it look like I was in hurry to get to dinner, I come into the kitchen strutting and immediately take the only empty seat. And, of course, the only empty seat is the seat next to the girl that was in my room.
My mom serves us dinner and everyone grabs hands for prayer. But I do not grab Mikayla‘s hand. She is different and I feel like I am betraying Lindsey if I grab another girls hand. After prayer, it is all quiet except for the clatters of forks and knives.
“So are you going to Springfield High, Mikayla?" My dad asks the girl across from me, trying to start some kind of conversation. I then realize who the girl in my room was. Mikayla, my best friend from way back. She has changed a lot from the pale girl that I used to know. Her skin has gotten darker, her brown hair is longer and she has grown quite a bit since I last aw her.
“Yes,” She says taking another bit of steak.
“Maybe Corbin can show you around.” My mom says. What? No, of course not. I can not be seen with this girl. First off Lindsey would kill me and second, it would ruin my reputation. I am popular now and from what I remember, Mikayla was not.
“No mom. I think she’s big enough to find herself around,” I say, taking another bite of steak.
"Oh don’t get your undies in a twist. Show her around. She doesn't bite. I promise." My mom is nice and all but she does not understand how important it is to stay popular. I high-school, if you do not stay popular, then you get harassed every day. Knowing Mikalya, she is probably a freak now. Besides, we are not even close anymore and after how I talked to her upstairs, she probably does not want to be around me either. That is just fine with me.
I take her out of my thoughts and begin thinking about Lindsey. We have been dating for almost two years now and I love every day that we are together. We met during one of the rides home from an away basketball game. I was late to getting on the bus and every seat was taken except for one and that was next to Lindsey. We did not really talk before that but after that bus ride, we talked nonstop. From the time I woke up and the time that I got to school we would be text messaging each other. We would text in class, sit next to each other at lunch and when I got home from football practice, I would immediately text her and she would text right back. Like she was anticipating getting my message as much as I was anticipating hers.
This went on for weeks until her birthday came along. She had a party at her house and almost every popular of semi-popular person you could think of was there. We of course talked the entire time and found ourselves out on the balcony away from all the noise and people. She then confessed to liking me and I confessed to. And I kissed her. Yeah, I know, weird to kiss someone on the first date but I did. If you want to consider our little talk out on the balcony a date.
After dinner me and Mikayla are told to do the dishes which I thought would be a nightmare. Considering I do not like her that much. But it turned out to be simple. She washed, I dried and put away.
“You don’t have to show me around school.” Mikayla bursts out of nowhere. I laugh inside. She honestly thought that I, Corbin, start basketball and football player was going to show her around like she was some little kid?
“I didn’t plan on it,” I say coldly as I put away another dried plate.
After we get done washing dishes we go outside where out parents are around a fire on out large wooden deck. It is dark out except the light coming from inside, the fire and our large in ground pool. My mother is sharing the photos of Mikayla and I that she has kept in her photo album all of these years. To me, it is a waste of space. She should have more photos of Lindsey and I in it. A little while later Mikayla’s mom announces their departure. Mikayla thanks my mom for dinner and she gives my dad a hug. Her parents leave to go out to the car and I start to go inside.
“Bye Corbin,” Mikayla says to me.
I do not respond and continue to walk inside thinking the most negative thoughts I can about her. I run upstairs in a flash and grab my phone to begin text messaging Lindsey. I fall asleep with my thoughts full of Lindsey.

Thank you so much. And I will!
What a shock and disappointment for Mikayla! What did he think?
The second chapter, which I now currently up, is a different POV. So, I hope you enjoy it (:
It's good to see the events of the evening from Corbin's perspective. Good idea to do it that way.
Can I make a suggestion? I think it would be easier for the readers to follow the story if you put the rest of the chapters in the comment section. Then their comments will also make more sense and be easier to follow. Good luck with the rest of the story!
Can't wait to see what happens next!
Permalink Reply by Kelley Brady on June 9, 2012 at 10:32pm sounds like a really good story! please continue!
Thanks guys!
And thanks Seuqnet, thats a good idea. (:
