Okay, I've decided to post this story now, since it doesn't seem like they are going to retrieve our stories! I'll only post a little at a time though....

Chapter 1: Summer break plans.

Melanie's POV

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Kim Connweller

Hi Mel!

I know that you are busy studying in school. I also know that during summer break, you prefer to stay in your dorm and study. But I just wanted to know if maybe you would consider coming to La Push for summer break for a little while. Everyone would love to see you! Mom and dad miss you so much. Also, you can meet Jared (my boyfriend). I'm sure you'll love him. You know all about him already, but you haven't met him, and I really want you to. So email me back when you can!

Bye,

Kimmy

P.S. If you want, you can bring your books and study on the beach, or at night. :)

I read it over for a little while. Kim, my little sister, really wanted me to visit. She was right; I did prefer to study in my dorm during summer break. But I also needed a vacation. La Push was nice, especially the beaches.

I clicked reply and sent her a message.

Kim,

How long exactly were you expecting me to stay? I can't stay for the whole summer you know.

Love,

Mel

I sighed and flipped through my textbook. Kim had been nagging me since I first came to college about this. I had different dreams than her. She and I, as girls, had both wanted to be teachers. I had wanted to be an elementary school teacher, and she had wanted to be a preschool teacher. We would daydream about it for hours every day sometimes and we had shared all kinds of ideas about what are classroom would be like. When I first went to college Kim was so jealous because she wanted to go as well and become a teacher. She wanted me to give her all kinds of detail about my dorm, and about what the place was like. Then she met Jared, and everything changed. She had different ideas about how to live life. She didn't want to go to any far away college. She wanted to stay at the community college in La Push, and become a preschool teacher there. She didn't want to experience other places. She wanted to stay home and become a house wife. Now, she is on her senior year of high school and her plans haven't changed.

I mostly blamed Jared, and when I told her (in an email) what I thought, she got really angry and didn't talk to or email me for months. She and I had just started to come to better terms and I didn't want to make things worse between us right now, which is why I was pretty sure that I was going to go to La Push.

"Mel! What are you doing?" I glanced up as my roommate, Terri Fuller, walked in.

"Nothing much. I was just checking my email." I told her.

"Any interesting news from home?" Terri asked, as she started up her laptop.

"Not really. Although, my sister Kim wants me to go to La Push for summer break to visit everyone. But mostly, to visit her and her new boyfriend Jared."

"Are you going to go?" Terri asked.

"I think so. She's just now starting to like me again, and I want to make sure that we stay close." I told her.

Terri nodded. She knew all about the fight that Kim and I had had a few months ago. "I'm probably going to go visit my mom and dad in Connecticut, for the whole break. I didn't see them last year at all, and I couldn't go for Christmas so..I figured that I'd better go for the whole break. My sister, Reenie, is going to be there too. You know, since she's getting married and all, she planned her wedding in Connecticut during the summer to insure I'll be able to come."

We both laughed.

The next day, I went to check my email. Sure enough, I had gotten an email from Kim.

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Kim Connweller

To answer your question, I was thinking about a month or so.......???? I know that you can't stay for the whole break.

Hope to see you soon,

Kim

I hit reply and sent my message.

I guess a month will be okay. I can afford to take that much time out of my studying. I'll see you in two weeks!

Love,

Melanie

Chapter 2: Beautiful La Push Part 1
Melanie's POV

I walked out of the Forks Airport, where Kim was supposed to be meeting me, but so far, there was no sign of her.

I decided to call her at our house to see if she was there.

I took out my phone and dialed the home number.

After the third ring, a voice I had never heard before picked up.

"Hello?"

"Hi. This is Melanie, Kim's sister. Can I talk to her please?" I asked.

"Sorry, Kim's not here," the male voice said.

"Oh, well she was supposed to pick me up from the airport, but she isn't here," I said.

"Oh! You're Kim's sister, right?"

Didn't I just say that? "Yes."

"She went to go get you. Wait for a few more minutes. She should be there. Bye!"

And then he (whoever "he" was) hung up.

I sighed in defeat, knowing that I couldn't call back, because the same idiot who didn't have a clue would answer the phone again.

"Kim, where are you?" I muttered to myself. She should be here. She was NEVER late. But, maybe this Jared had changed her.

Finally, after another 20 minutes, she pulled up in a red jeep.

"Hey Kim! Sweet ride! Where did you find this awesome car! It looks brand new!" I exclaimed.

"Oh, it got into a wreck before I bought it, and believe me it was really ugly then, but Jacob Black fixed it up for me," she said.

"Jacob Black! I didn't know he still lived here. Isn't he like 2 years older than you or something? Shouldn't he be in college?" I asked.

"Mel, not everyone goes to college," she laughed. "Besides, he does go to college. At La Push community college. He has some family things going on here. So, he'd like to stay for at least another year if possible." Kim explained.

"What's wrong with his family?" I asked.

"You remember Billy Black, right? He's Jake's dad."

I nodded.

"Well, he isn't as young as he used to be, and he's in a wheelchair now. Rebecca isn't going to come home because she's busy with her own family in Hawaii. And Rachel can't handle it alone."

"Wait! I know Rachel's supposed to be in college," I said. "What's she doing back here?"

Kim laughed but continued on. "Rachel came home on break for a while and fell in love with Paul, one of Jake's friends. And she didn't go back."

I didn't understand it. How could Rachel throw her whole career away just for some guy? Some guy who probably was only going to be with her for a year at maximum. Relationships don't work when you are trying to make something of your life. I've had experience in that department.

"Don't act so surprised. Not everyone has a horrible love life like you," Kim said. Then she regretted it two seconds later. "Mel, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up Brad......"

She stopped herself before saying Brad, but I knew that she was going to say it anyway.

"It's okay. I'm completely over that loser," I said. Though, I really wasn't.

Brad was a guy who was in my teaching workshop class. It was this special class that prepared students who wanted to be teachers for the harder classes that we would have to take in order to be an educator.

Brad was always sincere, and we went out a couple of times. The funny thing was, I never knew that he was faking everything. I thought that he was perfect for me, and I really loved him, but then I found out that everything he had told me was a joke. He had taken the teaching workshop as a dare from one of his friends. He said that he really liked me though, so he pretended to like everything I liked. I forgave him after a while, and everything was back to normal. And we talked about different things, like music and movies and the classes that we were taking. Everything was going awesome for the next few months after that, and then I caught him cheating on me. Our whole relationship had been a joke. Just like him taking teaching workshop.

"Here we are. Home sweet home," Kim laughed.

I looked around. Everything was pretty much the same as when I had left. Our mailbox, still said Connweller, except that the second "n" was missing, making it "Con weller."

"Mellie!" Screamed someone.

I looked up to see Emily running towards me.

"Hi Emmy!" I said. Emily and I had been best friends before I went to college.

"Come in and meet everyone. Sam is here too, and you have to meet him."

Sam was Emily's fiance.

I went inside and set my bags down. Everybody was in my house. Well, my old house.

"Lot's of boys..." I whispered to Kim. She giggled and motioned for me to follow her into the living room.

"Everyone this is Melanie, my sister. Most of you probably remember her." Kim said.

Oh my gosh, I silently pleaded. Let this be over. I was not good with being in front of groups with people my own age. Kids, I could handle.

"Seth's running late again. As usual," Kim muttered.

"He's coming over soon. He had to take care of a few things," said a female voice, coming up behind me.

I turned around and saw someone that I hadn't seen in ages.

"Leah!" I squealed.

"Mel! Your here," she laughed, coming over to hug me.

Chapter 2: Beautiful La Push, part 2.

Melanie's POV

"Leah! I can't believe you're back in La Push!" I exclaimed.

"I can't believe you're back in La Push!" She laughed.

"I know. Summer break." I smiled.

"I've missed you so much. When I heard that you were coming home for summer break, I decided to come and visit for the summer," she said.

"I wasn't going to, until Kim invited me. Gosh, I haven't had a summer in La Push in ages," I said.

"It's going to suck when summer's over. How long are you staying?" She asked.

The question caught me by surprise. I wasn't really sure anymore how long I was going to stay. A month had been my limit, but now that I was surrounded by family and friends, I never wanted to leave.

So, I answered to the best of my ability. "I'm not really sure yet. But I know I'll be staying for at least a month."

"Well, if you are only going to stay for a month, we have a lot of catching up to do," Leah said.

Later that night in my old room I hooked up my laptop and checked my email.

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Terri Fuller

Hey Mel,

I just wanted to say hi! How are things going? So far, my sister Reenie has tortured me to no end. Shopping all day? Not my idea of fun! LOL! Anyway, message me!

Bye,

Terri.

I laughed. Terri and I both absolutely HATED shopping. We only went together, and when we did it was quick and we didn't linger over things like a lot of girls do. We simply picked something up, made sure it fit us, and was comfortable, and then we left.

To: Terri Fuller
From: Melanie Connweller

Hi Terri,

You? Shopping? Unbelievable!!!!! Things are going great! I just realized how much I love it here in La Push! I just saw my friends from high school, Leah Clearwater and Emily Young(soon to be Emily Uley) and it was incredible! I hadn't seen them for 1 and a half years! Have you seen any of your old friends yet?

Love you,

Mel

I had also received a message from Brad.

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Brad Clark

Melanie,

Come on! You've got to get over the fact that another girl kissed me! It was an accident! Don't you believe me?

Brad

"No Brad! I don't believe you!" I screamed, in my head.

To: Brad Clark
From: Melanie Connweller

Brad,

You cheated on me! Admit it! You slipped up. I'm sorry that you regret it, because I'm not coming back, no matter how much you plead and beg. Anyway, don't bother emailing me again.

Melanie Connweller

P.S. I HATE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked over the "I HATE YOU!!!!" thing. It wasn't me. I couldn't put that in an email.

So, I deleted it.

I really hoped that there were other guys out there who weren't as stupid and selfish as Brad.

Chapter 3: Claire part 1
Melanie's POV

I woke up to the sound of voices talking and laughing.

It took me about two seconds to realize that Kim was having Jared over.

"Gosh, what time is it?" I murmured, looking for the clock that used to be by the bedside table.

I got up and went into the bathroom. I turned on the shower, but before I got in, I saw the clock that was normally by the bed, on the counter top where the sink was.

"Eleven forty five!" I yelled, out loud.

As soon as I did that, Kim came rushing in.

"Melanie, what's wrong?" She asked, concern written all over her face.

"Oh...sorry to disturb you, I just saw what time it was and.......freaked out," I explained.

She looked relieved. "Yeah, you slept in. What time do you normally get up for your..um...classes?"

"Four thirty," I answered automatically.

"Four thirty! You mean, in the morning?" Kim asked.

I nodded.

"Well, what time do you go to bed?"

"I don't know, probably around eleven or eleven thirty," I said.

"Mel! You don't function well if you only get 5 hours of sleep a day!" Kim said.

"Well, I take a lot of classes. My first one starts at five in the morning, and my last one ends at eight thirty at night," I said. "I sleep in on the weekends, until about nine in the morning."

"Well, listen, I promised Quil that I'd babysit Claire for him today while he was..you know...on patrol, and then I have to go to an interview at five tonight, so I probably won't be back home until around nine thirty. Sorry that I can't be home today," Kim told me.

"No worries. I'll see if Leah or Emily wants to hang out," I said.

She gave me a warm smile and went out of the room.

When my shower was done, I got dressed in my favorite green t-shirt and my pants, that I found at Old Navy on one of my rare shopping experiences with Terri.

When I went out to the living room, the phone rang.

"I'll get it," Kim said.

While I waited for her to finish her conversation, I went to my room to pack up everything I might need for the beach.

"Melanie! Melanie!" Kim yelled, frantically.

I went into the living room. "What is it?"

"Okay, the manager of the Starbucks that I'm supposed to start working at, asked me if I could switch the interview to one today because he can't meet me tonight. But, I have to babysit Claire for Quil! How am I supposed to find a replacement babysitter for Claire in a half an hour?" She said, eying me.

This was what Kim did all the time to me when we were kids; made a big deal about her problem, meaning for me to help her out.

I sighed. "Alright Kim, I'll watch Claire."

"Thanks, you're a lifesaver!" She said, smiling at me.

"Here's the address," she said, handing me a piece of paper. "Emma, you remember her, should be back around four in the afternoon."

Then, before I could reply, she left.

**************************************************

Relax, it's just Emily's niece. You can do this, I kept telling myself.

I had never babysat before in my life, and I was starting to freak out about it. Teaching kids I could handle, I'd done that before. But I wasn't so sure about watching them. When I had called Emily to tell her that I was babysitting Claire, she assured me that Claire was really sweet and wouldn't do anything. Quil had a special attachment with her or something, though they weren't related. That's what Emily had told me, and she didn't say anything else. This really bugged me, because I wanted to find out more.

"Melanie!" Someone said.

I looked over to see Emma.

"Hi Emma!" I said. Emma used to be my babysitter when I was in preschool and elementary school.

"Melanie! It's so nice to see you. It's been so long!" She hugged me for a moment and then continued. "Claire's inside, playing with Quil. He has to leave in about fifteen minutes. She hasn't ever met you before, but she takes well to strangers. The first time she ever met Quil, she asked him to play Barbie with her, and they've been inseparable ever since. Anyway, I have to go to my doctor's appointment, but I'll be back around four."

We chatted for a few more minutes and then Emma left.

I went inside the house, and saw a cute little five year old girl, playing Barbies with a 17 year old boy!

Chapter 3: Claire Part 2

Melanie's POV

I couldn't conceal my laughter, and I toppled over onto the couch laughing hysterically.

"Hey, what's going on?" Quil said.

I looked at Quil and smiled. "You don't remember me, do you?"

"Should I?" He asked.

I smiled warmly. "I don't know. My name's Melanie Connweller. Kim's sister."

"Melanie?" He asked.

I nodded.

"Wait, you're the girl that was on the basketball team in High School. The only girl."

"Yeah........" I thought that he'd remember me for something else too. (I was almost glad that he didn't.)

He had graduated as well as me. It seemed like everyone in this town had, except for Collin and Brady.

Kim had graduated this year.

"You know....I'm Mellie Wellie," I said, regretting it almost instantly.

"Mellie? Oh my gosh! You've changed a lot! No wonder I didn't recognize you," he said.

When I was in 1st grade, Kim couldn't say Melanie, so she called me Mellie, and eventually added Wellie to the end of it. One day, when my mom was picking me up from school, she brought Kim. As soon as Kim saw me she screamed, "Mellie Wellie!" And then, everyone in the class knew what my embarrassing nick-name was. Quil was in my class that year, in fact he was in every one of my classes in elementary school. He was my best friend. Then, in the middle of our first year of Middle School, Quil had to move, because his father got a new job in San Francisco. He came back in High School, but we never really were friends again. He had a different lifestyle, after that.

"I didn't know that your changed your name to Melanie," he said.

"Well, when you're in college, I don't think having a professor calling you Miss Mellie Connweller really sounds.......mature," I admitted.

When I was in kindergarten my name was Mellie Connweller, and it stuck all the way through my senior year of high school.

He laughed. "You're right. It does sound weird."

"Nowadays, everybody calls me whatever, you know. Melanie, Mel, Mellie, Anie, Lanie, all of those names."

"Anie and Lanie?" He asked.

"Well, we had to do a skit in this drama class once, that I was taking outside the campus, and my character was called Annie. One boy suggested that since my character was Annie and since Melanie had "Anie" in it that he would call me Anie. And the name stuck. He also came up with Lanie. He calls me both names. His name is Thomas Ellheart." I explained.

Quil looked thoughtful for a moment.

He looked at his watch and sighed. "Well, I guess I have to get going."

Well, thanks for talking with me for a bit," I said.

"Hey, I'll see you at the bonfire tomorrow night, right?" He asked.

"Bonfire?"

"Yeah, didn't Kim tell you?" He asked.

"Oh right! Yeah, the bonfire," I said. "I'll probably be there, unless I need to babysit for some reason," I added with a grin.

He smiled back at me, gave Claire a hug, and left.

"Hi, Claire!" I said.

She looked up at me and smiled. "Hi. Do you want to play Barbies with me?"

I grinned and bent down to play with her.

After she was done playing, she told me that she was tired and needed to take a nap. I was astonished. I didn't know any other five year old who would take a nap without being told too.

I got her a glass of water and then called Leah.

"Hello?"

"Hi Lee, it's Mellie," I said, using my old nickname.

"Mellie? I haven't heard that in a while," she said.

"Yeah, I guess I kind of miss that name," I admitted.

"Well, Mellie, I wish I could hang out today, but I'm sick," she said.

"Oh..sorry to hear that," I said.

"But, hey, listen, I'll see you at the bonfire tomorrow night, right?" She asked.

"Totally," I said.

"Cool. Oh, wait, I wanted to know if Claire wanted some cookies. I made them last night for her, and I wanted to bring them over, but since I can't Seth could. What do you think?"

"Oh, I'm sure Claire would love that! She's taking a nap right now, but she should be awake soon!"

"Alright, I'll send Seth over," Leah said.

"Okay! Thanks, bye Leah!"

"Bye Mellie!"

I hated how everything had to change. I wish I had kept the name Mellie Connweller. It sounded so much more like me. Melanie wasn't who I was.

If I could go back to the day that I decided to be Melanie, I would stick with Mellie.

Terri sometimes called me Mellie, but most of the time it was Mel. Mel was still more adult like than I wanted.

I laughed at myself then. It was really stupid to make such a big deal about my name!

To pass the time I took out my laptop and checked my email.

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Terri Fuller

Hey Mel,

How are you doing? I just met two of my my old High School friends! The first one was Tami Hart. She and I had been really good friends in High School. Then I met Lacey Boyd. She was my tutor in Middle School (because she was really smart) and my best friend in High School. I also met an old Middle School friend that I haven't seen since eighth grade graduation. Her name is Josephine Miller. But everyone calls her Josie. Anyway, email me soon!

Kisses,

Terri

I was so happy to hear from Terri!

To: Terri Fuller
From: Melanie Connweller

Hey Terri,

Well, I'm doing good. Everyone here is really nice! I just met an old elementary/middle school friend, named Quil Ateara. I'm babysitting a little girl named Claire right now. (I know, I'm shocked too.) Her mom used to be my babysitter when I was in preschool and elementary school. Kim has an interview with Starbucks right now. I'll let you know how that goes. Oh yeah, and a boy named Seth Clearwater is coming to my house right now to give us cookies! LOL!

See you soon,

Mellie

After I sent Terri's email, I noticed that I had an email from Thomas Ellheart.

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Thomas Ellheart

Hi Anie,

I've been trying to reach you for a while. I finally found your email address! Anyway, I wanted to invite you to the drama club full time. You did an awesome job performing Annie in our play, and
I think you would be amazing in our next one, "The sound of music." Anyway our first meeting is on June 19th and it is MANDATORY that ALL drama club members (or soon to be drama club members) be there. Think about it. You'd have to cut your trip short, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind. Thanks a bunch!

Sincerely,

Thomas Ellheart

Hi Thomas,

It's nice to hear from you. I don't know if I'll be able to attend the meeting. I might have to wait until the next term for it. Anyway, I'll give you a response before June 16th, if I'll be able to make it. Plane tickets are expensive, you know.

Sincerely,

Mellie

Melanie

Suddenly the doorbell rang.

"Come in," I said, while I finished up my email.

"Hi! It's Seth Clearwater, you know, with the cookies," said a male voice.

"Oh hi," I said, turning around to face him.

He just stared at me. "...."

"Um.....thanks for the cookies. Claire will love them," I said, trying to break the silence.

"Yeah.......Claire...really likes....cookies," he said, his voice sounding faraway.

I don't why, but the way he said it made me break out in laughter. When I finally calmed down, I was really embarrassed.

"I'm sorry. It's just the way you said that.....well...you know," I explained.

"I know," he smiled at me.

"Well how is Leah?" I asked.

He's kind of cute, I told myself.

"She's doing good. A little grouchy though. She always is when she's sick," he said.

Suddenly, I heard Claire walking through the halls.

"Well, Claire's up," I said, nervously.

Gosh, why am I acting like this. I'm never nervous around guys, I said to myself.

"Sethy!" She yelled when she saw him.

He pulled her up into a hug.
Awww!!! Sethy!!! Hahaha Lol!
Please post more soon I totally loved it!!!!!
This is really great! I love it! Please keep me updated! =)
The first time i say unbelieveable! Post more soon.
Thanks guys! This story is finished so I'll post more soon! :)
Chapter 4: Wolves and Imprinting
Melanie's POV

As I walked home that day (I didn't bring my car) I thought about the way Seth had acted when he first saw me. It was like he was totally zoned out to everything else.......except me.

When I walked through the door, Kim was right there waiting for me.

"Hey Kim!" I said.

"Mellie, we really need to talk," Kim said, a worried expression on her face.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Nothing, it's just....I have to talk to you, about some things...." she mumbled.

"Okay, what?"

"Well, okay, you know all about wolves and vampires and that kind of thing right?" She asked me.

I nodded. She had told me everything from the phone, and, surprisingly, I believed it all. And I still did.

"Well, there's this other thing that wolves do.....it's called imprinting," she said.

"Imprinting?" I asked.

"Yeah, its when they find their soul mate or something close to that. It's more deep than love at first sight, even. Its like, when they see them, the person that is truly theirs, the whole world stops and the only thing they see is their imprint. It's the only thing that matters to them. That girl, that they know is theirs forever," she said.

"Did.....Jared imprint on you?" I asked.

"Yeah," she said, smiling.

Then, I thought about the way Seth had acted when he saw me.

"Has.....Seth imprinted yet?" I asked, nonchalantly.

"Um..........I don't...well....um...no?" She said.

"Kim," I said, sternly.

"Okay, so he hasn't. At least, not that I know. He could have," she said. I knew that she was lying.

"Look, Kim, I know that you’re lying to me," I said.

"Mellie! I'm not! I seriously don't know. Word travels around fast though, so tomorrow night, at the bonfire, I'll know, most likely, and you can ask me then..." she said.

I nodded. "Okay, I'll ask you tomorrow."

Chapter 5: The bonfire
Melanie's POV
"Mellie! Hurry up! It's almost time to go! Jared will be here any minute!" Kim called to me.

"I'll be there in a minute!" I said.

I looked at myself in the mirror again. Kim had chosen clothes for me to wear. She said that my clothes weren't really "bonfire material."

I had agreed, mostly because I didn't want to start a fight with her about it, but there was a part of me that wanted to look nice too. I had never really cared about how I looked before. I had always worn something that was casual, but also comfortable for my classes.

Kim had chosen a pair of blue short pants and a Hollister shirt to go with it. She had me wear the necklace that I had gotten for my birthday when I was 16. She had kept it all these years (because I was afraid that I would lose it). I also wore a pair of high heel flip-flops (something I NEVER did) and a blue jacket.

"I'm ready!" I yelled.

"Wow! Mellie! You look awesome!" Kim squealed when she saw me.

I smiled. "I know."

"Seth is so going to flip!" She squealed, then covered her mouth and instantly regretted it.

"What?" I asked, eyes on her.

"Um...well..okay..there's a rumor going on that Seth imprinted on you, but...no one knows for sure because he won't tell anyone yet. He hasn't phased for a while. So, we're waiting to find out."

I sighed. "Kim! He imprinted on me! Me! I know it! When I was babysitting Claire he came over and when he saw me his jaw dropped and he was just staring at me and...and...and..." I mumbled.

"Mellie! Calm down! Would it really be so bad if he did? You and him have the same interests anyway. You know, he wants to be a teacher, like you, and he is going to the community college right now, until his family can afford to send him to a university. They just sent Leah, and money's tight around there."

"Really?" I asked.

She nodded. "Besides, he would never go back on you anyway. Not like.....Brad..."

"It's okay to talk about him, I'm completely over him now!" For once, I could say it and not be lying.

*******************************************

When Jared got to our house (late, can you imagine?) he started making out with Kim, which I didn't really need to see. But before they started kissing, he said that the bonfire wasn't going to start for another hour.
So I headed to my room and emailed Terri.

Hey Terri,

Kim is now officially a Barista! She is working for Starbucks! There isn't much to report here! I'm heading to a bonfire though! Talk to you later!

I also got an email from Thomas Ellheart

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Thomas Ellheart

Hey Anie,

Thanks for letting me know! I I hope you decide to come!

Thomas

I didn't bother replying to that message. I had already made up my mind. I was staying. Being here made me realize how much I LOVED a La Push summer.

"Time to go Mellie!" Kim yelled.

I turned off my computer and went out to Jared's car.

Things didn't go so well at that point. Jared asked me to drive (????????) and I said yes (what else was I supposed to say?). Then, I realized that he asked me that so that he could make out with Kim in the backseat of his truck. Yuck!

When we got to the bonfire things started to turn a little bit, but not much. I suddenly felt really sick, and had to leave. I didn't really meet anybody at the bonfire. I was really hoping to...but I guess I caught something, so I had to go home and go in my room for the rest of the night.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sick and I need help! I'm suffering from boredom!

Chapter 6: The Angel Part 1

Seth's POV

Melanie.......Melanie..... I couldn't stop saying that beautiful name. Whenever I thought about her my heart fluttered and everything was perfect.

But then I realized what would happen in a month or so.....she would leave. She wasn't into relationships. At least, that's what Kim said.

Maybe I could change that.

I decided to call her. On the third ring, she picked up.

"Hello?" Asked the most beautiful voice I had ever heard.

"Hi..It’s Seth Clearwater...we met the other day," I said.

"Oh, hi Seth!"

"I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime. You know....maybe go cliff diving...." I trailed off.

"Sounds awesome! When would you want to go?"

I was a little shocked by this. I thought that she would decide not to.

"Um...how about later today?" I asked.

"That sounds good. I'll meet you there at three, okay?" She asked.

"Yeah, three sounds good."

"Alright, see you soon, bye!" She exclaimed.

"Bye," I said.

As soon as I had hung up, I went to pick up Claire from her friend’s house. I promised her mom that I would, since I was free. I only had to stay until one, so I figured that would give me plenty of time to get ready for cliff diving.

When I arrived at the address that Emma (Claire's mom) had given me I stopped the car and headed towards the door.

"Sethy!" Claire squealed when she saw me.

"Hi Claire! How about we go and get some ice cream, okay?" I asked her.

She nodded her head vigorously. "Yes, yes!"
I smiled. Claire was a really sweet girl. Even though she was Quil’s imprint, I still really enjoyed hanging out with her. Little kids have a way like that. They could help you through any difficult time, better than people your age or older could.
“Sethy, are you coming?” Claire asked from her car seat.
I just realized that I had been daydreaming, as usual. “Yeah, coming Claire.”

We went to her favorite ice cream place. She got chocolate, and I got strawberry.

“Sethy! I have a chocolate mustache!” Claire squealed. I looked up. Smeared all over her face was chocolate ice cream.
For the fun of it, I smeared my strawberry ice cream all over my face. Claire giggled.

“Sethy! You’re funny!” She laughed.

Eventually, we had to clean up and leave, because people were staring at us.

On the way to my house, Claire talked about all her friends, and about “Quilly” and how pretty he was, and what they played, and how sweet he was. To be honest with you, I was a little grossed out. Even though it wasn’t about how cute he was and what an awesome kisser he was (and the fact that a preschooler was talking to me about it) it was still kind of creepy.

When we got to my house, Quil called and said that he would be over to pick up Claire soon (with Emma’s permission of course) so I had to find all her toys that she has dragged out and put them back in her backpack. And believe me it’s no picnic. She plays in one room, and then moves on to the next room, until there are toys scattered in every room.
When Quil got here, Claire was ecstatic. “Quilly!”

“Hi Claire!” He said. Then he turned to me. “Thanks for watching her! I was going to, but then Sam called me to have me patrol.”

“No problem.”

Then they left.

Chapter 6: The Angel Part 2
Seth's POV

I literally sat on the couch watching the clock. I couldn't wait until three came.

Finally..at two...I decided to watch some TV. I flipped through the channels and tried to find something interesting, but the only things that seemed to be on were old western movie and reality TV. I absolutely hated reality TV. I guess the reason I hated it was because my parents had hated it and always said that it was fake.

Speaking of parents......I had just remembered that my mom had gone out with Leah to get pedicures. Leah was over her illness now.

I sat on the couch waiting for the clock to strike 2:30 so that I could start getting ready to go.

As each minute ticked by I began getting tired.

Soon....I slipped into unconscious.

****************************************************************

When I woke up I freaked out. The clock said 3:30!

I quickly grabbed everything I needed for cliff diving and ran out of the house.

************************************************************

When I arrived at he cliffs it was 3:45. I searched for Melanie. Finally my eyes rested upon the beautiful angel.

She smiled as she ran over to me.

"It's about time," she smirked.

"I'm sorry about that. I fell asleep while I was watching the clock and...." I trailed off.

"You were watching the clock?" She asked, puzzled.

Nice going Seth, I thought.

"Um..yeah...I love cliff diving!" I smiled...trying to sound confident with my explanation.

"Hm.." she said, looking as if she were thinking about something.

"Well...do you want to cliff dive now?" I asked her.

She smiled and nodded. "Kim and I used to do this all the time when we were little girls. Emma would come and watch us all the time while we jumped. It wasn't very safe.....but we didn't jump from very high places...and there were a lot of experienced divers there....plus, there weren't any rocks in the spot we liked to dive into."

I looked at her. "You? You've been cliff diving? I always thought Kim would have done it...but never you."

She looked at me in return. "Why? You think I'm just some petty schoolgirl?" She laughed and I let out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness she didn't take that as an insult.

"I'll show you the spot where we used to dive...if you like.." She said.

"Sure," I smiled.

She led me past all the really awesome diving spots and then took me past some not so awesome ones...and then we were there.

"Kim and I called it Rainbow Peak. I don't really remember why anymore. I think it was because a rainbow always formed on the top of it." She motioned towards the very top. "Of course...we could never go way up there...we could only go on the second tier. Our parents were really protective of us. Or...that's what we thought anyway."

And with that...she jumped off the tier. I heard her scream as she reached the bottom.

I looked over and saw her motioning for me to jump. Her almost muted voice yelled, "Seth come on in! The water's great!"

I smiled and ran right off the cliff...it was one of the most exhilarating things I'd ever done. The other cliffs were fun..but this one was just plain awesome. I had no idea why. Maybe it was because of the fact that Melanie was waiting at the bottom.

"What did I tell you?" She asked as I came up to the surface. "Is it fun or what?"

"Actually..you didn't tell me anything, but, yeah, it was fun..." I said. She smiled and jumped onto the rock ledge....then she began climbing back up.

"Um..you know you could use that ladder over there..." I said...motioning towards the ladder that some La Push boys had built a while ago, since cliff diving had become really popular.

"I could....but I don't think I will..." she replied.

I remembered something that Quil had told me at the bonfire the other night, "You gotta love Melanie! She's awesome!"

I watched as she gracefully made her way up the rock wall. "You gotta love Melanie," I repeated.

Chapter 7: The next day; Part 1

Melanie's POV

After spending time with Seth, I felt mysteriously drawn to him. I really wanted to hang out with him again. But..I also didn't want to be the one to call him, because then he might think I was desperate or that I was really serious about him..and wanted to have a relationship. But..I sort of did. I wasn't really sure how I felt anymore.

Melanie, you just met him. That's the thought that was going through my head all day. You've only seen him when he stopped by to bring over some cookies for Claire..and when you went cliff diving yesterday.

Finally I gave in and attempted to call him. But that was a little tricky...considering I didn't have his phone number. I couldn't ask Kim because I didn't want her to know that I was calling him..which would totally give her the wrong idea. So..I had to do a little searching.

I went out to the kitchen to see if Kim had his number written down anywhere. But to no avail.

Then, I spotted a phone book on the counter. I quickly ran over to get it..but then I heard Kim come in.

"Oh no! Kim can't find out I'm calling him! She'll ask so many questions if she spots me!" I muttered.

In my rush to get to the pantry where I was planning to hide, the phone book fell on the kitchen floor.

There wasn't anytime to get it though.

Once I was safely in my hiding spot, I looked out the keyhole of the door towards Kim. And of course..wherever Kim goes..Jared follows.

He kissed her..but she pulled away. "I have to do something first," she smiled. I shuddered. Ew...I said to myself.

Then she noticed the phone book. "What's this doing here?" She picked it up and put it back on the counter. "Kim?"

I tensed.

"Hm..she probably went out," she said.

Then she picked up the phone and called someone. "Hey Seth! It's Kim! Is Melanie there?......Oh..she's not?......Well, she isn't here. I think she went out.......okay...bye!"

Darn! She probably had it memorized.

"Seth says that he hasn't seen her," she told Paul.

Then she came over to the pantry.

"Oh no," I whimpered.

But she didn't open it. Instead she did something weird with her hand..and the keyhole went dark. Then light again.

I didn't understand what had happened.

"Let's go," she said. Then they left. I let out a sigh or relief and opened the door.

But it didn't open. The doorknob wouldn't move. I tried again. No such luck.

"Oh no! Oh no!" I yelled.

Kim had locked it! How could I have been so dumb not to see what she had done!

"Help! Help!" I screamed. But nobody heard me. There wasn't anybody there.

I sat there for an hour contemplating what to do. "All this trouble over getting a phone number!"

Then I remembered. There was a spare phone in here. When Kim and I were little our parents hid it..because we constantly played with it all the time. There was also an outlet in here. I could plug it in!

I searched through the boxes until I saw it. Then I plugged it in...and the phone rang.

"Wha...?" I trailed off. Then I remembered..this phone had the same number as the regular phone.

"Hello?"

"Hi...Melanie?" Said the familiar voice. It was Seth!

"Seth..hi! Um...can you come over here? It's kind of an emergency." I said.

"Um..sure! What's wrong?" He asked...calm but worried.

"I'm locked in the pantry," I admitted.

"The pantry?" He asked,.

"I'll explain everything when you get here," I said.

"Okay...I'm on my way," he said...and before I could say goodbye he had hung up.

To pass the time...I was trying to decide what to get Kim for her birthday next week.

I was thinking of getting her a CD of her favorite band Paramore...but I was pretty sure that she had every CD that they had ever made..so that was a no go.

Then...I thought jewelery. But that was way too expensive.

I decided against jewelry because my parents were probably already getting her something like that. They were coming home in time for her birthday.

Then I started thinking about something I could do this summer to keep me busy. I had seen an ad in town that said that people aged sixteen and above could start a summer club for elementary schoolers which started in July. I wanted to start an R.L. Stine fan club...because he was my FAVORITE elementary school level author. I loved the horror stories he wrote. But...I had to devote half my day to it...and I wasn't sure that I wanted to do that.

Plus, I had to have someone do it with me...as a helper..but I didn't really know anybody who would be interested.

Soon Seth was here and I had to help him find the key.

"Try on top of the fridge," I said.

He found it there and unlocked the pantry door.

I ran out dramatically and started taking in long deep breaths. "Phew.." I said, smiling.

He laughed. "So..how did you get in there?"

I stopped laughing. "Um....well...I was trying to find a cookbook..and I guess Kim locked me in there. It's weird, I never heard her come in."

"Wow," he said.

I nodded. "So...do you want to hang out?" I asked.

"Sure," he smiled.

Chapter 7: The next day; Part 2
Melanie's POV

We decided to just take a walk and talk.

"So, what are your plans for this summer?" I asked Seth.

"Um...I'm mostly hanging out. I have a job at the store. I go there for three hours on Fridays. I'm taking some extra college classes on Wednesdays. I also want to start a summer club for the elementary schoolers here in La Push."

"Really? Me too. I saw the ad and thought it would be fun. The only thing is I need someone to do it with me...." I trailed off realizing that he could.

"What were you thinking of doing?" He asked.

"Well...I love the author R.L. Stine...you know, the man who writes Goosebumps and Fear Street?

He nodded.

"Well..I wanted to make a club devoted to his books..you know...we'll read them and then have a discussion on them. I had that at my elementary school during the summer and it was a lot of fun. I came to every meeting on time." I recalled one of my favorite childhood memories. "Our club leader, Cassie, really loved the books, so she started the club. I was hoping that it would re-open again the next summer, but Cassie was away at college."

"It sounds like a good idea," Seth said. "I could do it with you. I Love R.L Stine books too!"

"Really?" I asked.

"Really," he said.

"Cool....well....I've got to go. I told Kim I'd be back by 4 PM...so I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah, definitely," he said.

Seth's POV

Okay, so I don't really like R.L. Stine books that much. I only agreed to do this to be near Melanie.

But my luck began to change when she called later that night.

"Hello?"

"Hi Seth...it's Melanie! Anyway..I wanted to tell you that I talked to the person who's organizing the clubs and she said that they already have enough clubs. Bummer, huh?"

"Yeah..a total bummer.." I said, smiling.

"Well...I also wanted to know if you wanted to go with me to Starbucks tomorrow. Kim's starting working there tomorrow and she wants me to be there to give constructive criticism of her work or something...It should be fun," she said. "Maybe afterward we could catch a movie or something?"

"Yeah sounds good. What time?" I asked.

"Um...she said we should be there around ten. I'll pick you up okay?" She asked.

"Yeah..sure.." I said. I felt really bad...I hadn't driven her anywhere! But then again...I didn't have a car!

"Okey-dokey! See you then!" She exclaimed. "Bye!"

"Bye!" I said.
Chapter 8: Starbucks
Melanie's POV

The drive to Seth's house was relaxing.I loved to drive. It gave me time to think. And today, I was thinking about Seth.....a lot.

I was thinking mostly about how alike we were. He loved kids; loved to teach them, and so did I. He loved R.L. Stine and so did I...at least...I thought so, though I had my suspicions about that. Anyway, there was a thin line between our two worlds. We were so much alike.

When I pulled up into Seth's drive, he was waiting there. He hopped into the car and bombarded me with questions.

"So...how are you liking La Push?" He asked me.

"Well, to be honest, I really missed it. Being here has made me realize how much I love a La Push Summer," I said.

"I thought so....." He said, lost in thought.

We sat in silence for a while, each in our own thoughts. But it wasn't an uncomfortable silence...it was a nice one.

Finally he said, "Has Kim changed much?"

I smiled. "Not really. She's still the same eccentric Kimmy. Although, she has a boyfriend. She didn't used to have one as steady as Jared."

"I know how you feel. Leah comes home from college and she's suddenly really nice. Not angry all the time like she was in High School. She just lively all the time now."

I nodded. "It was hard for her when Sam...you know...went with Emily...instead of her..." I said, nervously.

He didn't seem bothered at all. "Well...you'll understand someday."

"I already know about the imprinting part," I said sternly, more angry than it needed to be.

He seemed taken aback but didn't let on. "Oh..well...then you know what happened."

"Yes, I do, sadly. Sam went against Leah...and had to fall in love with Emily."

"Imprinting isn't something that can be helped. Listen, what's wrong? You seem upset about something," he concluded.

"Do I look upset!?" I yelled. "Listen, I know all about imprinting, okay?! I know what it does! But why didn't Sam give Leah any notice of this? Huh?! Give me that answer! He could have told her....he knew he was a werewolf! He could have told her that he would imprint soon, or called it off before it got serious."

He looked shocked.

I sighed. "I'm sorry. I'm just confused."

He looked at me. "You know, don't you?"

I nodded. "But...I'm okay with it. It's not bad."

He smiled. "Well....what does that mean?"

"Just give me some time to work out my thoughts and feelings. I'll let you know."

This seemed to satisfy his needs and we were quiet the rest of the way.

When we got to Starbucks Kim ran out to us. "Thank you guys! Thanks for being here! Thank you so much for critiquing me!"

I laughed. "A little nervous?"

She sighed. "Yes. Which is why I need to know how well I do today."

"Well, we'll be here for about an hour or so," Seth said.

"Come on in guys!" Kim said, dragging us through the door.

Seth rolled his eyes, but smiled.

When we got inside there were only a few people there. A woman who looked like a schoolteacher was sitting at a round table...presumably grading papers with a correcting pen. She must have been a summer school teacher, since school was out. An elderly man who looked to be in his late 50's was sitting at a table reading the newspaper and drinking a plain coffee. Also, a woman and what I thought was her husband were sitting at a table eating a thing of donuts and drinking a soy latte.

I went to the front counter to order from Kim. She could hardly keep a straight face.

"Um..I'd like a decaf mocha cappuccino please...Kim.." I said.

"Sure thing...coming up," she said, giggling.

I went over to the other counter, waiting for my drink. Seth didn't want anything. He seemed different today....more distant. Normally he was cheerful, but today he was sullen and quiet. He could have been debating over what to do, about me...or he could have been contemplating my next answer. Whatever it was..he was in deep thought.

Suddenly, I heard a crash, I looked to see what had happened, and I saw that not only the straws, but the napkins had fallen over the counter and Kim was desperately trying to pick them up. But, most of them would have to go in the garbage.

She gave me a sad look, and I returned her with an equally sad one.

I sat down at the table, sipping my cappuccino while simultaneously watching Seth and Kim. Seth was sitting at the same table as me, but it felt like he was 100 miles away. He didn't talk much, except the occasional, comment about the weather or something else like that. Kim kept glancing at our table, eying Seth. She knew something was wrong, and later today, when she got home, I was going to have to explain everything.

Then she came over to our table. "My boss says that since you're my sister...and friend," she added, motioning towards Seth, "that you can get another drink, absolutely free."

She looked towards me, expecting me to say something. "Do you want anything Mel?"

"Oh..sure, I'll have a medium hot chocolate," I said. It was best not to indulge on too much coffee.

"What about you Seth?" She asked, looking at him.

"I'll have the same as Melanie," he said blandly, before returning to his silence.

I needed to talk to him, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. He seemed so fragile, and anything I said might break him. At least, that's how it felt.

When it was time to leave, I thanked Kim for inviting us, and got in the car. Seth followed behind.

Now that we were in the car I could talk to him without feeling like everybody was watching.

"Seth, what's wrong?" I asked him.

"Nothing, why would you think that?" He asked, forcing a smile.

"Come on. All during Starbucks you were doing nothing. You weren't conversing with anybody, and that's okay but it was like you were feeling nothing. Absolutely nothing at all except sadness," I said.

"Wow...you should be a writer," he said sarcastically.

I stopped the car on the side of the road. "I can't take this anymore, Seth. We're not moving until you tell me what's wrong."

He opened his car door. "Then I guess I'm leaving." And then he started walking away, towards his house.

I stared at him as he continued walking. I sat motionless. I wanted to scream. Why was he doing this? Why did it have to be so hard?

Every part of me wanted to just sit there and fall asleep, because I felt so weak and tired and betrayed, but I knew I couldn't. I continued to drive on home, and when I got there, I went to my bed.

My thoughts were always the same....I didn't want to be the one to take Seth away from anyone. I didn't want to be like Emily. I didn't want to break someone like Leah's, heart. It was too painful....to be a monster...

Seth's POV

"I blew it Leah!" I yelled as I walked through the door of our two story house.

"Seth?" She asked, from her spot on the couch. "What happened to you?"

"I'll tell you what happened. I walked through mud all the way back here. And the reason I walked back here was because want to sit with that beautiful angel any longer. I couldn't...because she can't know what I'm feeling...." I muttered.

"Oh Seth..." Leah sighed. "We all mess up sometimes..."

"But this was big Leah! I can't take it back!" I said.

"Sure you can Seth. You can take anything back," Leah told me.

"Well, what do you recommend?" I asked her.

She smiled. "You need to talk to Melanie....or..if you want...I could talk to her."

"No way! That would be embarrassing....having you pick up my problems for me."

"Well..either way, you need to talk to her," she said. And then she went up to her room.

I sighed and glanced at the clock. 12:00 PM. There was still time left in my day to go over and talk to her. But I couldn't do it. I couldn't face her. Not after what a jerk I had been....

Chapter 9: Terri
Melanie's POV

I looked at my email. I had been neglecting it for so long. It was mainly because I didn't want reminders of my other life.

But today, I knew that I would have to return to it soon. It couldn't be helped.

I turned on my laptop and waited for it to load...and wouldn't you know it? 15 new messages! Mostly from Terri, but some spam..

The rest of them were mostly things saying "call me." But one didn't say that..instead...it was about her coming to stay!

To: Melanie Connweller
From: Terri Fuller

Hey Mel,

I know that you haven't been on lately...but just in case...here's my plan...

1. I'm going to come down to see you because I can't take another minute here at my house...and because I can't wait to see your beautiful La Push!

2. I'll be coming July 8th.....(a week)....

3. I would really like to stay with you...but if I don't get a hold of you, I'll probably see you somewhere....(small town, right?) ......and until then..I'll find a hotel.

4. My flight comes in at 10 AM on July 8...so if you get this call me ASAP..if you want to pick me up...

Terri

I couldn't believe it! My best friend (as of now) was coming up to stay with me. I was so happy!

I called her. No answer.

"Hey, it's Terri. I'm not here right now, but if you leave your name, number and a brief message...I might return your call and you might win a million bucks! Just kidding! I'll call you!"

I smiled...Terri always had the craziest messages on her phone....

"Hey Terri! It's Melanie! Sorry I didn't get all your messages...I've been busy..and no not busy that way....but I'd like to pick you up..so I'll meet you at ten! Call me!"

I then thought....I have to find somewhere for her to sleep! Jared was practically living on the guest bed...I shivered at the thought.

I'll have to talk to Kim.....

**********************************

When Kim got home that night..she threw her things on the floor and ran to my room.

"Mel! Spill!"

"I won't spill until you spill! How did it go?"

"I don't know...the usual I guess...although, some guy said that out of every Starbucks that he has been to, that I make the cappuccino that he orders the best!" She smiled.

"Kim..that's great!"

She blushed. "Enough about me. Let's here about you! What's wrong?"
"Nothing. Seth is just acting weird and he won't tell me why," I said, trying to hide all emotion. But inside, it was killing me. I felt sick and miserable because I cared. I cared about everything he said to me. I didn't want to pry into his personal business, but I was almost 100% sure that he was bothered by something I did, and I wanted to know what it was.

"Mellie, Seth imprinted on you, so he loves you, and he's worried that you don't want him. He's going to feel nothing when you leave, no happiness, no nothing because he loves you, and his bond with you is strong. But he's letting you go already, he's given up on you. He's preparing himself for the worst. He knows that you're leaving now. He's accepted it. But you need to tell him if he's right or wrong because he's debating over it now. He doesn't know what to do. So you need to tell him if you're leaving or staying."

I thought for a moment. "You're right."

She smiled at me and then hugged me. And then I started sobbing. I couldn't help it. I was so confused. "Oh Kim. I don't know what to do! I don't know if I should stay or if I should go! I want more than anything to be with Seth. But I need to think about my other future too! I planned to be a teacher and a really good one too. And I don't want to be a college dropout either!" I continued crying. I felt horrible.

Eventually, at least I think so, I fell asleep. I don't know how. One minute I was sobbing hysterically with Kim, then the next I was in my bed.

I got up and hurried to the bathroom. I looked at my swollen red eyes. My shirt was tear stained. I changed into a different shirt and headed out to the living room.

"Hey Melanie!" Kim announced. "How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine....now," I said.

"That's good to hear," she said before bringing her homemade pizza to the table.

"Oh Kim! I'm so sorry! It was my night to make dinner and I fell asleep!" I wailed. I felt horrible. She had prepared every meal so far.

"It's okay Mel. You needed the sleep. Besides, I expect you to make dinner tomorrow night," she smiled.

Tomorrow was Kim's birthday. Sadly, she had to work, but that would give me time to pick up mom and dad from the airport and go find her present.

Then I remembered Terri. "Kim! Terri's coming!"

She looked at me confused. "Who's Terri?"

"Oh..sorry, Terri is my friend from college. She and I share a dorm."

"When is she coming?" Kim asked.

"Oh..the day after tomorrow," I said.

"The day after tomorrow! You didn't know about this sooner did you?"

"Well...I would have, if I had bothered to look on my computer. But she says that if its too much trouble, she can stay in a hotel."

"No..no, she can stay with us," Kim said.

"There's just one problem. Where will she sleep? Because the guest bedroom is...well..occupied," I said.

"There's a bed in the attic. I'm sure Jared wouldn't mind helping up put it in your room," she said.

I smiled. "Thanks Kim. By the way, where is Jared?"

"Oh..he's on patrol with Sam," Kim said.

I nodded and went to get plates for dinner. "Hoe many people are coming to dinner here tomorrow?"

"Um..let's see. Leah, Seth," she said, while I flinched at the name Seth, "Emily, Sam, Jared, you, mom, dad, me, Embry, Brady, Collin, Sue, Billy, Jacob, and Rachel. That's 16 people! Wow! Are you up to cooking for that many people?"

"I'll manage," I said.

Chapter 10: Kim's Birthday; Part 1
Melanie's POV

I woke up and stretched. It was a nice day outside. The sun was shining and the birds were chirping. At least, that's what I wanted it to be.

Instead, it was raining and the sky was gray. Not something that you want to wake up to. It made me want to stay in bed. But I had to get up, because I had a long day ahead of me. I had to start dinner as soon as I finished breakfast and then at 11 AM I had to leave to go pick up mom and dad from the airport.

It wasn't going to be easy to do everything...especially since I had to get Kim a present too.

I quickly got up and got dressed into my outfit that I planned to wear for the day. Casual.

Then I went out to the kitchen and made myself some eggs. Kim was already at work. Jared was still sleeping though....yes he spent the night....so I supposed that I should probably make him some eggs too.

When I was finished with that task..I began making Kim her birthday dinner. We were going to have roast beef, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. It was a simple dinner, but Kim liked it that way.

I could make the mashed potatoes and broccoli when I got home from my errands, but I had to start the roast beef now, or otherwise it wouldn't be ready by dinnertime. Since I needed to make two, I had to dig around in the pantry for the other crock pot that we had. When I found it I began setting up the roast beefs, and finally setting them into the crock pots to cook.

Then the phone rang.

"Hello?" I asked.

"Hello. This is a call from your local baskin robbins reminding MELANIE CONNWELLER about her 2:00 PM appointment to pick up her cake, if you are canceling--"

"The cake!" I yelled. I had forgotten all about that! Would I be able to make time to pick it up?

I carefully looked at my mental schedule.

"Let's see, I need to leave at 11 AM to pick up mom and dad from the airport, then I need to shop around for a gift for her...which could take forever...and then I need to get the cake at 2 PM, but I need to be back by 4 PM to start getting some snacks set out because we're having a mingle time at 5 PM. And then at 5 PM I need to start getting dinner finished so that we can eat at 6 PM, and....oh! I forgot! I have to pick up Kim from Starbucks at 4:30 PM!"

This was going to be hectic.

I sighed and went down to watch TV. It was 10: 30 and I couldn't really go get Kim's present, because of the lack of time.

I settled on "The Forgotten" my favorite TV show. It was something that I had recorded on the TV last night.

At 11 AM, I paused my show and went out to the car. It was still raining.

*********************************************

When I got to the airport I headed inside. I was a half an hour early. I went to the Starbucks that they had inside.

I ordered my drink, and sat and waited until their flight came in.

Eventually, it did, and I waited near their terminal for them to come out.

When my mom saw me, she burst into tears! "Mellie! I can't believe you're back!" She was very emotional. She gave me a big hug and then my dad came in!

"Melanie Michelle, you are as beautiful as ever!" He always called me by my first and middle name.

I blushed. "Thanks daddy!"

We went out to the car and talked and laughed the whole way there. It had been forever since I'd seen them.

"My Kimberly Anne is going to have an amazing party thanks to you!" My dad told me. Yes, he calls both of us by our first and middle names. It's just his way.

"I know daddy! But, I'm not so sure it's going to be perfect!" I told them.

"Why's that pumpkin?" My mom asked, concern in her eyes.

"Oh, I've just never done this sort of thing before," I told them, "and....I haven't gotten her a present yet."

"Oh honey! You haven't? Well, we can fix that! Let's head to the mall right now!" My mother said.

I smiled. My mother had always been sort of eccentric; doing things at the spur of the moment, and some of them were so surprising and random.

One time, when Kim and I were girls, we were at home and Kim was complaining that she was bored, so my mom took us to an amusement park in Port Angeles.

"Um..sure mom," I said, getting off the freeway at the exit for the mall.

I called Kim, when we got out of the car to tell her that mom and dad were almost home, and that we had just stopped at the mall for a little bit.

Her response was something like I expected. "What!? Mom and dad are home! Already? Oh my gosh! Jared is probably still asleep since Sam had him patrolling all night...oh...what will happen????"

"I'll call him and see if he can clean up after himself," I said.

"Melanie Michelle, what are you talking about?" My dad said.

"Um..nothing dad! Just talking to Kim!"

"Don't tell him!" Kim hissed.

"Don't worry!" I said to her.

"What isn't she supposed to worry about?" My mom asked.

I groaned. I loved my parents to pieces, but they could be annoying sometimes.

"Um..she just wanted to know if I would be able to pick her up at 4:30 because of my busy schedule and I was telling her not to worry because I'd be there!" I said.

"Nice save," Kim told me.

This answer seemed to satisfy them, because they turned around and started walking through the parking lot.

"Listen, I have to go! But I'll call him," I said.

"Okay! Bye!" Kim said, then the line went dead.

I quickly dialed the number. No answer.

"Hello. This is the home of Gary, Michelle, Mellie and Kim. We're not home right now, but if you leave your name and number we'll return your call."

"Jared! My parents are coming home! You need to get the house cleaned so that they don't know that you spent the night!"

Then I quickly followed my parents into the mall.

*************************************************************

The trip to the mall was productive. I managed to get Kim a Paramore necklace that I was sure she'd love (and didn't have). Plus, it was really pretty. It wasn't too expensive, but it didn't leave me a whole lot of money left.

When we got home, Jared was in the house, but he was dressed, out of bed, and the house was clean.

"What is Jared doing here?" My parents said in unison through gritted teeth.

"Oh! Jared! You got the roasts going for me! Thanks!"

Then I turned to my parents. "I called Jared to see if he could get the roasts going because I got up so late today."

"Oh! Honey! Are you having trouble sleeping?" My mom asked.

"Um..yeah..." I said, hoping to take their mind off of Jared.

"Maybe we should call a doctor," my dad said. "I don't want Melanie Michelle, feeling bad."

I looked towards Jared. His expression didn't say, 'Why is he calling her that?' His expression said, 'Oh! So that's her middle name!' He was probably used to having my dad call Kim, "Kimberly Anne".

Chapter 10: Kim's Birthday; Part 2

Melanie's POV

"The cake!" I squealed. I had forgotten all about it! It was 4: 00 PM now! Something inside me said that I would never be able to get it all done.

"Um..Mom?" I said, looking towards my mother, who was working on peeling the potato skin from the potatoes before putting them onto boil.

"Yes, dear?" She asked, absentmindedly.

"I'm going to go pick up Kim now....and the cake," I said.

"Okay," she said. Then added, "Don’t stay out long." I had no idea what she meant by that. I had too much to do to stay out long. I didn't have any time, at all.

"See you soon!" I yelled. Then I went out the door before she could give me an answer.

I decided to pick up the cake first. The Starbucks where Kim worked was near there anyway.

When I got there, I pulled up, and practically ran out of the car, almost forgetting to lock it in my haste.

When I got to the front counter, there was a girl around 16 on duty, talking on her phone.

"Yeah, I know Kelly! This party is going to be so rad!" She squealed into the phone.

Then she glanced at me. "Oh..hold on Kelly, there's some girl here, wanting something."

I resisted the urge to glare at her.

She looked at me. "Well?"

I put on a fake smile. "I'm Melanie Connweller and--"

"I don't need to know your name!" She yelled at me. Obviously she was in a bad mood.

"Well, but, I'm here to pick up a cake," I said.

"Oh, Connweller?"

"Yeah," I muttered.

"Oooh, you're late. There's going to be a fee for that, about $20.00."

"What?! I didn't even pay that much for the cake!" I retorted.

She burst into laughter. "Just kidding! You fell for it!"

I was getting a little tired of this. "Can you just give me my cake, so I can pay and leave?"

She stopped laughing. "Gosh, it was just a joke." Then she went through a door. A minute later she brought out the cake. "That will be $10. 49."

I handed her my credit card.

She swiped the card and handed it back to me. Then she dialed her friend’s number again.

"Yeah, I'm done. She was so annoying!" The girl spat into the phone.

When her back was turned, I stuck my tongue out at her. And then, I smiled a smile of satisfaction.

************************************************************************************

When I got to the house with Kim, all the lights were off.

She smiled. "Trying to throw the surprise party prank huh?"

I smiled too. "They never told me about this. They probably didn't want me to ruin it for you."

She and I exchanged a laugh and then walked inside. But we didn't play along and say, "Where's everybody?" We just pretended that we didn't even notice that the lights were out. We put the cake in the fridge and continued about our business.

But, after about 5 minutes, none of the lights came on. It was getting hard to see what I was doing in the dim light, so I said, "Alright guys! The charade's over!"

But nobody jumped out and said, "Surprise!"

Nobody was in the house, was my sudden realization.

But then, the lights came on and people shouted surprise.

I breathed a sigh of relief. I was really scared back there.

I saw my mom in the kitchen. She might have been working along all that time and I didn't even know it.

Jared came over and gave Kim a hug and a kiss, while my dad stood watching, a glare on his face. He never liked Jared, mainly because he thought that Jared was a bad influence.

Then, my dad came over, and said something so embarrassing that even I turned red. "When you're done licking my daughter, it would be nice if you would help me out back for a second." That was a little much, even for him.

"Dad!" Kim whispered harshly.

He gave her an apologetic smile. "Sorry."

I couldn't keep a straight face. It was so funny, though it would have been embarrassing if it was me.

Kim glared at me.

I gave her that same smile that dad did and said, "Sorry."

She smiled at me then. I guess since it was her birthday she didn't want to be mad at anybody.

Then people started coming towards Kim, giving her hugs and wishing her a happy birthday.

But there was one person who wasn't doing much of anything, just standing in a corner, and that person was Seth.

I needed to tell him how I felt about him. And I needed to tell him my decision.

I walked over toward him. "Seth, can I talk to you?"

He looked up at me and nodded, not showing any emotion. We walked outside.

"Okay, I'm just going to come out and say it! I love you! I can't imagine not seeing you every day anymore! I can't imagine my life without you! And....if it's okay with you....I'd like to be with you...." I trailed off at the end, at a loss for words.

I stared at him waiting for a response. But he didn't say anything. Instead, he kissed me.

Chapter 11: Terri's arrival.

Melanie's POV

I was so happy. No, happy wasn't the word for what I was feeling. Ecstatic was more like it.

I was in love. I had never felt this way before. Not with Brad and certainly not with any other elementary or middle school love. Only Seth.

I said those two words over and over again in my head. "Only Seth, Only Seth."

"Melanie!" My mom yelled.

I woke out of my reverie. "Yes?"

"It's 9 AM! Didn't you say that your friends flight came in at 10?"

I nodded and bolted out the door.

***************************************

When I got there, it was 9:59 on my clock. That was bad! Especially since I had to go through security and everything first.

When I finally got to her terminal it was 10: 25. I quickly recognized her red hair and fled over to her.

"Terri!" I screamed, pulling her into a hug.

We embraced.

"Mel it's so good to see you!" She smiled. "Word is that you have a boyfriend."

I gasped. "How did you know that?"

She grinned. "I may have spoken to your sister...but maybe not....."

I gasped, dramatically. "How could you?"

We both broke out in laughter. It was so good to be around Terri again. But, I knew that in a few weeks, we wouldn't be so close anymore because now that I found love, I couldn't go back with her, and that saddened me. My smile quickly turned into a frown.

Terri noticed it, much to my dismay. "What's wrong?"

I shoved it off. "Nothing."

She sighed. "Mel, I know you. Something's wrong. You can tell me anything."

I looked at her. "Okay. I'm not going back to college. I can't anymore. And, we won't be close after you leave."

She looked me over. "We'll still be close. I'll visit, and you can visit me."

I nodded, feeling better. "You're right. There's no reason for me to overreact about this."

She smiled and started heading towards the Starbucks in the airport. "Come on! I know how to make you feel better."

I laughed and ran after her. Terri was the perfect friend. She was sympathetic and always knew how to make you feel better, but she could always make you laugh with her jokes.

While we were in Starbucks we talked and caught up.

"It's been really hard for her. I'm so happy that she finally found someone." Terri told me, about her sister, Reenie.

I nodded. "I'm happy for Kim too. She was always the one who was crushing on someone, not the one who someone had a crush on. I'm glad she found Jared." Then I added. "Even though he's a total pig."

Terri laughed. "Men. So....what's with you and what's-his-name?"

"You mean Seth? He's amazing! I really love him, and this is the one time that I actually feel loved back, you know?"

"Actually, I wouldn't," she sighed.

Terri had never really been the dating type, which is why when she suddenly decided that she wanted to be in a relationship with someone, nobody thought of her as someone to date. She had turned down every boy in our college, and probably half of LA!

"Aw..you'll find someone Terri."

"Doubtful," she said.

"With your charm? Totally! Every boy loves you, you just have to go for it," I told her.

"That's just the problem, I had several chances to "go for it" and I never did. I think that I've run out of chances."

"Nobody runs out of chances," I told her. "There's still some guy out there who is waiting for just the right person. And that person is you."

She smiled. "Yep, probably some guy in another country is sitting on a bench, hoping that I'll come running down the street, into his arms."

I laughed. "See? That's the stuff that will get you a guy!"

"My jokes?"

"Yep. Guys are serious jokers, so when they can find a female who shares that with them, it's love at first sight."

Suddenly my phone rang. It was Seth. "Hold on."

I answered the phone. "Hi Seth."

"Hey babe. Listen, I was wondering if you wanted to swing by the rez on your way home, and bring Terri too. I want her to meet everybody. The pack will be at my house."

"Sounds great! See you there. I love you."

"Love you too, bye!"

I headed back towards Terri. "We're going to take a little detour on the way home."

She eyed me.

"It's a surprise," I added.

Terri thought that she wasn't going to find love, and I thought that she was going to leave after the summer ended, it turned out that I would be very wrong.

Chapter 12: Imprint

Melanie's POV

I drove by the coast up to Seth's house. I had always loved the ocean. I had pretended to be a mermaid even when I was younger.

When we got to Seth's house, Terri was awestruck. "It's so beautiful!"

I followed her gaze. It wasn't really that beautiful. It was a normal two story house painted a dirty gray. It looked almost the same as any other house in the vicinity. It could have just been me though, since I had lived here most of my life.

We walked up the path towards the door. Terri was chattering about how awesome the agriculture was here, while she looked at the many plants and trees that surrounded the area. "And they get to live by the beach! Wow!"

Then she stopped. "Hey Mel? Wouldn't it be amazing if I fell in love with someone up here? Then I could live near the ocean and see all the plants here everyday and......" she continued on with her fantasy, babbling.

Normally I would have been amused by this and would have joined in, but I was thinking hard about what Terri had said. Hey Mel? Wouldn't it be amazing if I fell in love with someone up here?

I shook the thought off and continued up the path towards his house. His house was different than most. It had a nice sandy path to reach it which was a bit of a bother, but still it was interesting and original. It made it different. Most people didn't mind the walk though. It gave you exercise since it was all uphill. Although, it would have been a pain to lug groceries...or, and when I thought this I had to laugh....new furniture.

Terri stopped talking. "What's so funny?"

"I was just thinking about what a pain it would be to haul furniture up here," I said.

She looked up the hill and gulped. "Yikes! I never realized that it was this big."

"That's because you were fantasizing about your knight in shining armor, coming to rescue you and bring you to La Push," I laughed.

She looked at me weakly. "You....heard that huh?"

I nodded.

She looked sullen.

"Oh, don't be that way. It's fine. Everybody embarrasses themselves once in a while."

She nodded and started running up the hill. "I bet I can beat you Mel!"

I laughed and ran after her.

Soon we reached the house.

As soon as I knocked Seth opened the door.

He gave me a gentle kiss and then saw that Terri was there. She was trying hard not to crack up.

I laughed. "Come on! Let's go inside."

While Terri chatted with all the guys I talked with Seth. "You know, when I pictured coming up to La Push for the summer, I never thought that I'd find my soul mate."

He laughed and kissed me.

Then he whispered. "Looks like Embry's got his happy ending."

I looked towards Embry, ready to laugh at something ridiculous he had done. But I didn't. Because he was gazing at Terri like she was an angel. And she was...to him.

He had imprinted on Terri.
