As Bella sat staring out her bedroom window life continued on as if no one was aware of her broken heart. She really had no concern for what time of year it was or what the world was doing outside her bedroom window; the only thing on her mind was Edward and why he had chosen to leave her. She had loved him with her whole heart and every fiber of her being but it hadn’t been enough he left her anyway. She had tried to lie and convince herself that she had been better off without him but she knew the truth. The truth was she would never be the same, could never be the same without him. So instead of venturing out to start a new life and moving on as everyone had told her to she sat curled up in her chair and watched life go on outside her window trying to live the memories they had shared. Alice had been by her side and had tried to tell her that Edward loved her and that the only reason he had left was because he had honestly thought it was best for her, safer for her. Bella blamed herself for everything that had went wrong and she blamed herself for the fact that in the end he had gotten himself killed anyway. He had left leaving her behind and not only that but he had tried to take everything that would remind her of him, but he couldn’t take her heart. Her heart remembered every touch, every kiss and every moment spent with him and she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he loved her, had always loved her. With that knowledge she and Alice had ran as fast as possible to Italy to try and stop him from making the most ultimate of sacrifices but they had been too late. He had stood in the middle of the plaza in the glaring high noon sun amid thousands and thousands of humans as they sat, stood and froze at the vision before them. Edward in the sunlight had been beautiful, magnificent. He was like a god, with rainbow shards glimmering on the sidewalk and reflecting off the windows, sparkling like a diamond. Of course the Volturi couldn’t let that happen so he had been seized immediately and taken beyond the palace gates to never be seen again. The crowds began to murmur but in the end they had been led to believe that it had all been an illusion, a trick of the brilliant sunlight. Bella and Alice had arrived just a minute too late. As they had raced as fast as they could down the corridors and up the winding steps that led them to the colorless, cavern like room that held him they could hear his tortured screams as his life ebbed away. As they barged into the room they saw him lying in the floor with his life already gone, his body a crumbled heap on the floor. Bella had held what was left him in her arms and cried hysterically begging for someone, anyone to bring him back to her for she knew she could live without many things but to live without the hope of ever seeing him again was impossible. She had already tried to live without him once and it hadn’t worked and she knew it wouldn’t work now for now all hope was gone, dead in her arms. Here she sat on the cobblestone floor with the pieces of her one true love in her arms knowing that from that moment forward she would never see his tousled bronze hair, his crooked smile or the love that would shine so bright in his eyes that it was impossible to see anything else. She had held him until the guards had taken him away and she smelled the fire and knew that her life as she had known it was over. So now here she was a lifeless entity with no thought of living but just barely existing. She was a shell of the person she had once been. She asked herself every day how had it ended like this? How was she supposed to go on now? She had given up on life and only wanted to live in her dream world where Edward was as alive as he had ever been. As she drifted further and further away Edward watched her and ached to ease her pain. He only asked for one more day with her or even just an hour he just needed to take her pain away. He too blamed himself for everything that had happened and only wanted to tell Bella that somehow, someway everything would be okay, that she would be okay.
Edward never intended to enter Bella’s room, but he could see her curled up on her bed with tears still drying on her cheeks. She was clutching an old Harvard sweatshirt that had once been his. He was drawn inside by the very smell of her drifting through the open window; how many times had he been here before? How many nights had she left her window cracked for his late night entries? He wondered if she did this out of habit or in hope that he would somehow come back. He quietly swung his legs over the window seal and lowered himself soundlessly inside. The room was exactly as he remembered it. The soft sweet floral scent of her lingered in the air and just seemed to pull him in. He could see her Chap Stick and hair clasps strewn on the vanity; she had never been very organized. He laughed as the memories filled his mind, Bella looking for her keys or searching for her i-pod. As he continued to scan the room his gaze settled on a corner shelf and he felt his chest tighten. It wasn’t the deep blue corsage from prom or the crumbled movie tickets from their one and only attempt at a normal date nor was it the baseball from their very first date but it was the 5 x10 framed photos. He could see Bella in his mind’s eye chewing on her bottom lip and how she had objected to having her picture taken. He had tried to take everything that might cause her unnecessary pain when he left but Bella had clung to every memory like a lifeline. He could see the rocking chair where he had sat so many nights and watched her sleep. How many times had he sat in that very chair and wished to be a part of her world rather than his own? He crossed the room and saw his Cullen family baseball cap on her bed post. He realized that there were traces of him everywhere, as if she refused to let him go. He quickly gathered all these left over reminders and placed them beside the window as if their absence would wash away all memory of him. He had been wrong to think that she would ever let go or forget so easily. He now stood by her bedside and watched the soft moonlight illuminate her perfect face. He could see the faint tracks where her tears had fallen before sleep had finally taken over. His poor Bella, she would always be his Bella and it made his very being ache to see her in such turmoil. Edward tried to imagine what it would be like to never see her again, to envision her with someone else but the vision just wouldn’t come. He couldn’t think of her as anything but his, she would always be his. He just couldn’t fathom not knowing or remembering her. He continued to stand at her side mesmerized by the rise and fall of her uneven breathing and the beauty that was Bella. She began to toss and turn, tangling the sheets and he could see pain radiating from every pore of her body. He heard her call his name as if what was left of her heart was breaking into tiny fragmented slivers that would never be put back in quiet the right place again. He thought of Adrianna the angel of time and memory maybe she was right it would be better for everyone to forget. He could not bear to see Bella in such turmoil and unending pain, if forgetting would heal her and make her whole then that was what he would do. He touched the small flask in his pocket and the leather pouch that she had given him and he knew what he had to do. As he stood and lovingly watched her, trying to memorize every facet of her face and ever sigh and moan that escaped her lips she slowly opened her lovely brown eyes. She blinked twice and then smiled a radiant smile that shone brighter than the sun.
“This dream is much nicer than the other ones.”
He smiled as he walked to the edge of her bed and knelt by her side, to clasp her hand firmly in his. He saw the life sparkling back into her once dull eyes. She smiled so serenely and so lovingly it made him ache for what he knew would come next.
“Bella, love I have missed you so.”
“Oh Edward I can’t even put into words how much the absence of you has turned my world upside down leaving a huge hole where my heart should be.”
Edward cringed as the words fell freely from her sweet lips. He knew that Bella had no reason to censor her words she would never lie to him, unlike the blasphemy that had poured out of his mouth when he had left. He regretted the harm he had caused her and would gladly do it over again if he could but he knew that would never happen. He drew a ragged breath and tried to form the words that he needed to say.
“Bella please listen for I do not have much time. I need to share some things with you and I hope that you understand and that somehow you will remember that you once knew a boy who loved you more than life itself.”
Edward could see the look of confusion filling her eyes and worry knitting her brow. As she gazed into his eyes she pulled on her bottom lip and he knew she was already fretting about what he had to say. She reluctantly nodded her head and waited for him to continue.
“Bella I know when I leave here tonight you will have no memory of me or this conversation but I still feel the overwhelming need to explain and apologize for the things that I caused to happen. I have always loved you even before I knew you I loved you. I spent my entire existence waiting for you. I was wrong for thinking I could walk away from you and I am so sorry for the pain I caused you. I want you to know that nothing that happened was your fault if there is any blame it falls solely on me. I made my decisions and I alone am to blame for what came next. My love for you was so vast that nothing could measure the depth of my love for you. Bella before you my life was a cold, dark and miserable place and then you came along and pulled me out of the darkness that had become my life. It was you brought my cold dead heart back to life and at times it was as if I could hear it beating. I knew I should have left before things went too far but I wasn’t strong enough to leave you or to deprive myself of your company so I stayed. I am so sorry that my selfishness has caused you so much pain.”
Edward had to stop before he came completely undone and became a blubbering mess. He rested his head on the edge of the bed and felt Bella’s butterfly soft touch as she began to run her fingers through his tousled hair. He marveled at the exquisite feel of her hand and knew that was just one of the many things he would be missing tomorrow. She began to mummer soft words of love and comfort in his ear and he could feel the warmth of her breath and the touch of her lips grazing his skin. Edward struggled to lift his head and see her troubled eyes looking expectantly at him.
“Bella promise me something.”
He waited as she looked at him and nodded her head. Edward knew she wouldn’t remember him come morning but maybe she would be able to somehow keep this promise.
“Love please don’t stop living. You have to promise me you will get up each day and take whatever cards are dealt and make the most of whatever this life has to offer. I want you to believe in the gift of love. I know when I leave you tonight that all our memories will fade and our life together will be no more than a dream that never came true, our lives as we have known them will be over. I know that time will pass and life will go on, but Bella my heart will remember when you were mine and my heart will not let me forget. I know that if there is any possible way for my spirit to come back to this earth that I will find my way back to you. I love you always your name and memory will be etched in my heart for eternity and beyond and I will find my way back to you.”
Edward raised Bella’s hand to his lips and gently pressed them to each of her fingers, then her palm. He slowly made his way up her neck until he found her mouth that was parted waiting to meet him half way. He savored the feel of her lips and the teasing of her anxious tongue as it assaulted his. He felt very much alive as if a million tiny fireworks were exploding behind his closed eyelids and the sensations that ran through his body had him shivering in want. Edward struggled to bring this life altering kiss to an end even though it was the last thing he wanted to do. He carefully pushed Bella away and let her head fall to rest on his chest. As he held her close he felt the rapid beating of her heart and the shallow breaths she now drew in and out. She raised her head slightly and looked at him questioningly.
“Edward I know this is a dream, your lips are so soft and warm and the touch of your hand so soothing as if you’re taking all my pain away.”
He sighed and drew her closer to his chest so she would not see the truth hiding in his eyes. Edward never wanted her to feel an ounce of pain ever again. He knew she had endured enough for a lifetime already. He would not let her continue to suffer because of him and his poor judgment.
“Bella, my Bella I love you so much and it is for you I am doing the unthinkable. Please try to get up each day and put one foot in front of the other and see where this new life takes you. You just have to breathe in and out and know that there will always be someone out there who always has and always will love you.”
He eased her back on her pillows and stood beside her bed. She was watching him as silent tears began to fall down her face. He held out his hand to catch one and clutched it in his fist as if that would thrust all her pain onto him. He would leave until she fell asleep. He slowly made his way to the window before glancing over his shoulder.
“Edward please come back I don’t want to be alone anymore. Just don’t go until I have fallen asleep.”
He could see her outstretched arms reaching for him. That one simple request was all that it took and he was by her side. He lay beside her and held her close to his heart. He would do this one thing for her before he left, he would stay until sleep came.
“Love close your eyes and go to sleep. “
He lost all track of time as he closed his eyes and tried to ingrain every memory firmly in his mind. He would not let himself forget one second of his life with Bella. He had no idea how long it was before she drifted off to sleep. He lay perfectly still beside her and listened to her strong heart beat until her breathing evened out and her soft mummers fell silent. The time had come. He rose from the bed and gripped the pouch in his hand. Edward quickly before changing his mind shook the memory dust in the air and watched as it fell on Bella’s sleeping body. He could see the tiny particles floating like tiny dust fairies in the shimmering moonlight. He knew in the morning any memory or idea she had of him would be forgotten forever. Edward could hear her talking in her sleep and calling out for him. The hardest thing he had ever done was turn away from his heart and walk to the window. He gathered up all reminders of the past before looking over his shoulder one last time. He drank in the sight of his Bella, his love, the only heaven he ever wanted to know. He pushed himself off the window ledge and landed softly on his feet already running to the forest. He found a place to stop and he took the flask out of his pocket. He knew that Adrianna would be here soon and that he had to finish this. He removed the cork and turned the bottle up and drained the dark, bitter liquid it held inside. It took his breath away as he felt a burn going down his throat and then back up again. He had never felt such pain not even as a new born. He threw the empty flask watching as it shattered into the bushes. He cursed the vile fluid that by the light of the morning sun would have erased all memory of his heart.
“Edward come we have to leave.”
He looked up to see Adrianna standing before him. She was so graceful and beautiful in a majestic kind of way. When she took him in her arms and unfolded her golden wings it was mind altering. She was indeed a sight to behold. She took off and within seconds they were in Heaven’s gates. Edward looked around and nothing had changed it was just as it had been earlier. He could see the streets of gold, he could hear choirs of angels singing the most beautiful hymns ever written but amid all the beauty and perfection he still missed his Bella. He hadn’t been sure what to expect but he knew that at some point Bella would be gone from him forever.
He looked at Adrianna waiting to see what was to become of him now. As her eyes rested on Edward he could see mercy and pity shine in her angel’s eyes.
“Edward you know that I am the angel of time and memory. I don’t think you really understand what that means but I am going to explain it to you. When you went to Italy and begged to be killed I was watching you. Bella and Alice raced to get to you but they arrived too late. I watched as Bella held your broken body in her arms. She was devastated and she pleaded and begged for someone to give back her Edward. I heard her cries and that is why I brought you here. I feel that even though your heart had ceased to beat it was still a good heart and you Edward were a good person. I think you lived an honorable life despite the circumstance you found yourself in. I feel that had you been able to live your life you would have been a selfless person who would have changed the world for the better. It is for these reasons that I think you deserve a second chance. I had to be sure that you had Bella’s best interest at heart, so I sent you to see her and to see if you would be unselfish. I know how you wanted to leave and not enter her room but you did it for her. I know how hard that was for you seeing her like that and then to talk to her and touch her for the last time and yet you never faltered you did the one thing that broke what was left of your heart. You chose to make Bella’s life better even though it meant her forgetting you completely. I gave you the potion that at first light will wipe your memory clean, at that time I am sending you back to earth for a second chance to be human. I hope you are able to have a chance at love, happiness and the life you were meant to have because you Edward Anthony Masen deserve it. Good luck Edward now sleeps and when morning comes go and find your place in the world for no foot print is too small to leave its mark.”
He watched as she began to sparkle so bright he had to cover his eyes and then in a shower of light she was gone. He had so many unanswered questions. He didn’t see how he could possibly not remember Bella and even if his human mind forgot he vowed that some way, somehow he would find her again.
He fought to stay awake to not close his eyes but eventually he lost the battle and he succumbed to the effect of the potion. He closed his eyes as visions of Bella filled his dreams.

CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE
Bella and Edward walked along the beach as if the world were about to end at any moment. Bella had always wondered what caused fear; was it the bump in the night, the shadows that danced on the wall in the midnight hour, the chill that ran up your spine when you passed a graveyard in the dead of night, the sound of the house as it settled late at night or the little mouse that was more scared of you then you were of him? No Bella knew those things were just childish notions; she now knew that fear was the spasm that gripped your heart in the early morning light of an ordinary day and the not knowing what that day might hold. Yes the fear was in the not knowing. She glanced at Edward's serene peaceful face and wondered how he could be so calm when she felt like a cat on a hot tin roof ready to snap at the least little thing. As if he could sense her anxiety Edward reached for her hand and drew her closer to his side.
"You know my mother is close by and at the first sign of trouble she'll whisk us away in the blink of an eye."
Bella watched her feet as she walked afraid to look directly at Edward. She held his hand in both of hers and continued to walk aimlessly along the shoreline.
"I know and I am grateful for that but it's not us that I am worried about! It's what's about to happen or happening at home. Can't Elizabeth tell us anything?"
Edward shook his head. "It doesn't work that way. She can feel when certain things are about to happen where she is but she's relying on my dad to take care of what happens at home."
Bella watched as a streak of lightening flashed across the sky ending the illusion of a picture perfect day and she shivered as a sudden drop in the temperature seemed to fill the sultry salty air. She felt a presence that was unnatural and she stopped mid-step as her body sensed the fear creeping into her heart but this time she knew what face her fear was disguised in, it was fact that the angel of death might have found them after all. She could feel Edward’s hand squeezing hers tightly and she wondered if this was how it was going to end for her and Edward alone together on the beach. Bella’s last coherent thought was of her family and friends and that maybe they had gotten it all wrong.
Jake and Quil, Paul and Jared separated into two groups and made their way into the thick cover of the trees. They were all tense and ready for a fight. Sam, Seth and Leah were waiting at the clearing to catch any stragglers that might make it past the Cullen’s.
Jake was more than a little distracted as he wondered how Bella was and if she was safe. He felt a gnawing in his gut that something was about to happen, something that no one had anticipated. Alice was edgy and ready to snap at the first person who crossed her; she would never admit it but she was worried that she might have missed something that would change everything. Jake knew there wasn’t anything they could do now but fight to the finish and hope for the best. He had faith in his pack and he knew that nothing would get by them but what if the danger wasn’t here at all? What if this had all been a distraction? Jake couldn’t get the thoughts out of his head. Jake heard Sam’s voice in his head the newborns were here. Jake cocked his head as he heard the sound of feet moving swiftly through the woods following the scent of so much blood and they were snipping at one another. He and Quil followed and watched as one of the newborns crouched on all fours and sprang into the air landing on another newborn ripping his head off. He watched as several began to fight amongst themselves. He lost interest in the fight when he saw the red head and she didn’t seem happy. Jake nudged Quil they stealthily stalked the red head and her companion as they took a new direction. Sam was aware of the change he too was waiting for something to take place that no one was expecting.
As Jake and Quil followed the redhead Paul and Jared finished off the remains of the newborns who had failed to make it out of the woods. Jake was sure that the worst was yet to come. He followed the pair of vampires as they took the long way around the forest to the clearing. The redhead stopped as she saw what was left of her disciples being ripped to shreds by Sam, Seth and Leah. The Cullen’s had started the bon fire and were tossing the broken pieces of her army into the fire. Jake knew that Sam was aware of the red head and he and the Cullen’s turned and stalked across the clearing. Carlisle stepped forward trying to be the negotiator a voice of reason. Jake knew he was wasting his time she was beyond reason.
“Victoria it seems you are a little outnumbered.”
Victoria bared her teeth and snarled at Carlisle but remained crouched in the middle of the circle. She looked wildly around trying desperately to find a way out. She looked from one face to the next and she realized there was no way out. She was going to die.
“Victoria it doesn’t have to end this way. You have nowhere to go.” She looked at Carlisle like a rabid dog ready to rip his throat out. She was being fueled by adrenalin and the need to avenge her mate, James. She knew she owed him at least that much and she would not go down without a fight. She looked at the trees and wondered were Jane was? She had promised to be right behind them but she had yet to see the evil little tweet.
Esme stepped forward, “Victoria you could let us help you, and we could show you a better way to live.”
She growled deep and low in the back of her throat and began to rise up on her haunches ready to launch on the feeble little mother vampire. She knew that Esme Cullen had formed unnecessary attachments to humans and actual thought their lives had meaning or purpose, what a crock. She could never live like that. She was a monster and she happened to like being the bump in the night that drove people insane with fear.
Jake could see the look in her eye and he knew she was about to snap. He motioned for Sam to move to the left and just as Victoria was about to spring Jake took her down at the exact same time that Sam took out the male. The wolves took care of the two while the Cullen’s tried to make sense of what was going to happen next.
“Alice I need you to try to see what is happening? Where are the Volturi?”
Alice closed her eyes and tried to see something in the murky images in her mind. She could see sand and clear skies and then a heavy darkness seemed to steal over the atmosphere. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen but she knew that Bella and Edward weren’t safe.
As Alice opened her eyes she saw Jane, Alec, Felix and Demetri entering the clearing. Everyone fell into a defensive stance waiting for Jane to show her superiority. She walked around the remains of the fight and nodded her head. She came to a stop in front of Carlisle with her gray robe whipping in the wind.
“Carlisle, I must say it is a pleasure to see you again even under such dire circumstances.”
Carlisle stepped forward, “Yes Jane it’s a shame you arrived so late.”
Jane studied the area with an unreadable reserved look, “It appears we missed a good fight. However you did save us the trouble of putting an end to the creator of this little band of newborns.”
Jasper could feel the venom in her words and saw her for the liar that she was. He focused on bringing a sense of peace and calm and he watched as Jane relaxed and lowered her shield enough to share just a little too much.
“Carlisle, Aro sends his regards and his condolences over your loss.”
Carlisle wasn’t sure what she was referring to so he played along, “So Aro isn’t with you?”
Jane looked smugly at the faces that surrounded her, as they hung on her every word. “No I am afraid not. Aro, Marcus, Caius had business to attend to elsewhere.”
Carlisle didn’t miss the smirk that was on Jane’s angelic face. He knew she was antagonizing him but he still wasn’t sure what she was hinting around at. He swallowed an unnecessary breath and tried to convince himself that Aro had no knowledge of Edward or Bella’s whereabouts.
“Jane exactly why would Aro be sending me his condolences?”
Jane smiled serenely at him as if he were a complete idiot, “For the demise of your dear Edward. He was your first newborn, he has been by your side for some eighty some odd years. I am sure he will be greatly missed.”
Carlisle could see the gleam in her burning red eyes and he knew that the condolences were not for the loss of the vampire Edward.
“Yes he is missed.”
Carlisle could see Alice as she raised her hands to her head as if the vision behind her closed eyes was too much for her to bear. Jane looked at Alice as her smile grew wider.
“Alice dear are you alright? You look as if you’ve seen a ghost?”
Jasper held Alice’s hand and glared at the annoying face of Jane. He wished he could rip her to pieces but Emmett placed a hand on his shoulder to hold him back. As the Cullen’s formed a united front Jane smirked almost gleefully.
“Come boys I think our job is done here. Carlisle until next time take care.”
Carlisle remained calm as Jane turned on one heel and left the clearing as quietly as she had arrived. Alice collapsed on the ground at Jasper’s feet. The wolf pack came from the shelter of the trees to see what had happened. Jake was at Alice’s side immediately.
“Alice what is it? What did you see?”
Alice’s face seemed even more pale than usual as her bell like voice seemed to crack, “I was wrong, Bella and Edward…”
Alice never finished her sentence as Edward Sr. appeared and in a blink of an eye they were all whisked away.
Edward looked around expecting to see smoke or angry swirls of mist pouring from the ocean waves that beat against the seashore. All he saw was the sun setting against the tranquil perfect spring blue sky. He wondered what was coming for he was sure that the end was near he could feel it deep down in his bones. He looked at Bella’s ash white face and he knew she felt it too. He held her hand and pulled her behind him ready to die trying to save her from the demons at their door.
As the thunder rolled and the sun seemed to fade into the black clouds Edward waited patiently for his mother to appear. As if by magic several things began to happen at once and he didn’t know which way to look first.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see his mother as she seemed to be floating along the water’s edge and then the sky seemed to shift and his father, the Cullen’s and the wolf pack was on the shoreline. Edward looked at his mother and father and opened his mouth to speak when he saw they weren’t alone. He saw the Volturi guard moving silently and stealthily across the sand. Edward knew that Aro, Marcus and Caius were in the mist of the guard marching like a fine tuned machine. He could feel Bella stiffen beside him and he knew that as a human there was nothing he could do to protect her from what was coming. Then as Aro stepped forward in a blink and a flash of light they were alone on the other side of the beach. Edward could hear the controlled hard as steel voices floating along the cool ocean breeze.
“Carlisle I didn’t expect to see you here, tell me who your friends are?”
Carlisle stepped forward unsure of what was about to happen. He looked at Aro and his brothers surrounded by the guard ready to strike if necessary.
“I didn’t expect to see you at all. So Aro tell me what brings you and your guard all this way to the sunniest place in America in the middle of the day. I hate to say this probably isn’t the smartest thing you’ve ever done.”
Aro glided to a stop in front of Carlisle and took in the people that surrounded him. He was unfazed by the mismatched company that stood around him. He raised his hands in front of him and tapped his forefingers together as if in deep thought.
“I have to say that I didn’t expect to see you at all Carlisle, so tell me how did you make it out of Forks in one piece and arrive here so quickly? I mean really even at vampire speed you couldn’t possibly made it here in that short of time, if that were the case Jane would be here by now.”
Carlisle could see the questions flashing in Aro’s ravenous eyes and he feared for the pack’s safety. He knew that Jacob would be chomping at the bit to find Bella. He could feel a calm enveloping his senses and knew that Jasper was at work.
“Like you Aro, we have our secrets as well. What I would really like to know is why you came here at all? What were you planning on doing killing Edward and for what purpose?”
Aro cast a pitying look at Carlisle as if he were a naïve child. He pursed his lips as he contemplated how to proceed. He needed Edward and he intended to get him one way or another.
“Carlisle you really are too good for this way of life, it’s a pity you were ever changed. You and your coven are the largest coven second only to the Volturi. You are a compassionate man with so much humanity still intact and unlike me you make friends who trust you and follow you because they believe in your sense of right and wrong not because they fear you or have a lust for blood. I have always wanted to have you and your coven join the Volturi and I had hoped that by changing Edward back you would willingly join us.”
Carlisle had no desire to return to the Volturi or that lifestyle they seemed to favor. He wondered why they would risk so much for so little in return.
“Aro I am afraid that we like our simple lifestyle more than anything you could possibly offer.”
Aro held up his right hand as the guard began to move. “I wish you would reconsider I might even be leave Edward out of the equation all together; although the other human, Bella she knows entirely too much. I am afraid she would have to go.”
Carlisle heard a low growl coming from the vicinity of where Jacob stood. He was aware that all hell was about to break loose when he heard a loud rumble of thunder and the skies seemed to part and sparks shimmered causing a blinding light to fill the beach.
Aro held his hands out as if to shield his face from whatever evil was about to descend. He was not prepared for the majestic sight that seemed to be hovering overhead. In all his endless days of walking this earth he had never beheld such a sight and he wondered if there really was such thing as heaven.
Elizabeth and Edward floated above the ground surrounded by a heavenly light and the thunder that sounded like judgment was coming.
Elizabeth spoke in a voice that cut through the tension filled air with an air of authority. She was indeed much like an avenging angel come to save her beloved son. She was not going to stand by and watch anything harm him physically or emotionally.
“Aro you stand there with your condescending airs and false belief that there is nothing that can touch you. You have ruled over the evil and deprived soulless creatures who have been condemned for centuries. You have made ridiculous rules and held many accountable with you as judge and jury but that day is no more.”
Aro lifted his eyes to the blinding light and wondered who this was before him. He couldn’t see anything but shimmering light as if he were standing in the presence of angels.
“And who are you to stand before me and talk to me in such a manner? What power do you have over me and my actions?”
As the sky grew dark and the earth began to quake the face of fear grew still in the presence of heaven’s pure light shining down on the very entity that defined evil. Aro and his brothers watched as an army of light dispersed the dark clouds.
“Aro this is just a taste of the light and the army of good. Believe me when I tell you that if you touch one hair on my son’s head that the powers of the heavens above will bring even you to your knees and you will be begging for mercy and no mercy will be given. You are the master of the darkness and the very face of all that make mere humans cringe and hide in the closets. You are the fear that creeps into their souls and make them look under the bed. However you have no power over the light. You Aro do not want to cross this line and start a war that you will never be able to win.”
Aro looked as if he had seen his own future the blinding light before him. He stepped back and held his hands up. “So why would you come all this way and cause such a fuss for soulless entities like us?”
“You stupid little creature you are judged on the decisions you make and the lives you touch both living and dead. I am sorry to say that you have been a failure on all counts. As a human you were a selfish, controlling monster and now as ruler of the vampire world you are powerful, emotionless vile creature who is no different than you were as a human. I hope you know that in the end you will receive the wrath and justice you so rightly deserve. That time may or may not be today but I will promise you this if you leave here and never harm the Cullen’s, Edward, Bella or anyone they know or love you will be left to rule as you see fit from your throne in Voterra but if you choose to bring harm or discontent to any one of the fore mentioned then the wrath of heaven and hell will fall upon you now and there will be not one of your army who will remain standing. The choice is yours and remember that I along with my husband and our army are only a blink of the eye away.”
Aro was surrounded by Marcus and Caius who feared that the power that the Cullens’ might bring was not worth the outcome of a celestial battle. Aro was no fool and he knew when to cut his losses however he had never been faced with defeat and he had no idea how to handle such a blow to his global sized ego; really how does one who has never failed at anything not even death could keep him down, handle defeat?
“Very well we see no reason to upset the balance that you have set forth. We will leave you and yours to your own devices and you will leave us to ours. Agreed?”
“Agreed but I suggest you uphold your end of this or their will be hell to be paid.”
Aro could hear the innuendo in her words and knew that she would hold him accountable if anything happened to even one of the people she had surrounded herself with. He simply nodded his head and turned with his brothers and the guard following
In the blink of Elizabeth’s eye the sky cleared and Bella and Edward were back on the beach. Elizabeth and Edward Sr. embraced Edward and Bella reluctantly releasing them.
“Edward you have nothing to fear now. The Volturi will never be a threat to you or those you love again.”
Edward held Bella’s hand and smiled a genuine heartfelt smile. “Thank you so much mom we owe you everything.”
Elizabeth beamed at her son. “Don’t be ridiculous. You owe me nothing you are my son it is my job to protect you.”
Bella was still stunned at the outcome of the past few minutes. She had made herself sick with worry for a confrontation that had only lasted five minutes. She was relieved, happy and amazed that it was really over and her family and friends were safe.
“Elizabeth I will never be able to repay you for this wonderful gift you have given me.”
Elizabeth pulled Bella into her arms. “Bella my daughter you love my son and you deserve a long and happy life together. I am happy that I was able to give you the chance to discover all that this life has to offer together.”
Bella could detect a trace of goodbye in her words. She pushed away from Elizabeth and looked at her eyes. She could see the unfathomable depths of love as if she was drowning in the very essence of it.
“Elizabeth you’ve decided?”
Edward looked at his mother and he could see the love and a touch of pain radiating at him. He was so afraid that he might never get to see those enchanting green eyes with unending love shining back at him again.
“Mom you’re leaving?”
Elizabeth looked at her husband and she nodded her head. “We have to make the choice be remain here with you and be human or to return to the heavens above and keep you safe from harm until the day you join us above.”
Edward knew that the choice had been taken out of their hands by the Volturi and that was just one of the many reasons he had for the deep seeded hatred that filled his heart. He knew that the fires of hell would not compare to the fury he felt for Aro and his brothers.
Elizabeth could see the wheels in Edward’s mind turning and she knew the hate that was struggling to take root. She would not let him end up a bitter man filled with hate for things that were never in his control.
“Edward my son please do not let hate overtake your heart. You did not ask for this second chance or for any of the blessings that will fill your life but you deserve all of this and so much more. Please Edward do not give in to this hate and let it rob you of all that you hold dear. Embrace Bella and the love that you have for one another. Your father and I had a wonderful life filled with love and we had the distinct honor and privilege to spend seventeen years with you. We have lived a good life and now it is your turn to have the life that you were meant to led now in this time and place with Bella by your side.”
Edward could feel the pin pricks of tears burning behind his closed eyes and he didn’t want to say goodbye. He had waited so long to see them again and now to let them go again was too much and it wasn’t fair.
“Edward my son, your mother and I will be with you every day of your life. We will celebrate every triumph, joy and happiness with you. When you see a wild flower blowing in your meadow you’ll see our unbound love for you, when you see the rainbow after a heavy storm you will see us in the promise that tomorrow brings. When you look around and you see beauty and love that will be us with you every step of everyday until we meet again.”
Edward walked to his parents and held them close wishing he never had to let them go. He would never forget the grace and love which they lived in every touch and moment of every day. He would hold their memory to his heart and try to live his live in honor to them.
“Thank you for all you have done for me. I love you so much more than you could ever know.”
Elizabeth placed a kiss to Edward’s head and whispered softly in his ear. Your life is here, your time is now. You will live a long and happy life.”
Edward could feel his mother place something in his hand and clasp his fingers firmly around it. He raised his eyes to hers as she held his hand firmly closed.
“Take this in memory of me and you’ll know what to do when the time is right.”
Edward nodded and watched as she and his father gathered close to the Cullen’s and the wolf pack. He watched and in the blink of an eye he and Bella were once more alone as the shimmering light faded so did the vision of his parents.
