CHAPTER ONE – THE MOVE {Alexya's POV} Written by Carmen E

July 7th. I’ll never forget the day I felt a bone crushing pain, one worse than the one I suffered when I was ten.

‘Alexya it’s time!’ Dad called from outside. The roar of his car was uncomfortable. I took a ragged breath and looked one last time at the empty house with the first trickling tears on my cheeks. I whipped them away quickly. It had finally hit me, I was moving away from the only place I called home.

‘Goodbye’ I whispered, my voice echoed in the empty space. Goodbye memories, goodbye Mom, goodbye Anthony, goodbye Houston. Goodbye sun, goodbye Silver, goodbye Mariah, goodbye past...

Today I was moving to Forks, Washington. The rainiest and coldest place in the continental U.S. because my father, Frank, was offered a good job as a head surgeon at the local hospital and he couldn’t resist the opportunity. I tightened my grip on Pooh, Anthony’s small brown teddy bear. I turned my back on my past and walked with my chin held high to face my present and future: Forks.

I am fifteen and my life couldn’t have been any worse. I slammed the door of the red truck my dad owned and looked at him firmly ‘Let’s go.’

He smiled warmly but it never touched his eyes, he knew what I was going through. He backed away from my childhood’s house, from my suffered past.I hoped that my future would be something better but I doubted it. Bad luck chased me everywhere I went.

At the airport, we went through the normal procedures except that this was a one way ticket, there was no turning back. Forks would be a new home, a home I’d have new memories in, better memories as Frank had put it.

On the plane flying to my eminent town, I didn’t sleep, though it was a five hours flight. I looked out the window and at the changing weather when we reached our destined place. I let a gasp escape my lips. I smiled in anticipation. Raindrops were staining the thick glass of my window. I loved the rain and the cold.

The plane started descending and I prepared myself for the speed of the aircraft when it touched land, wet land.

Finally there: Seattle International Airport.

Frank had already bought a car the last time he visited Forks. He even got the house furnished and enrolled me into high school.

Ugh, high school. I absolutely did not want to be the new girl in school. I’d rather be invisible than the new girl. I couldn’t handle the gossip that would probably scatter all around this small town. In fact, I already think – no I know – that they’re aware of our arrival. Word spreads fast in towns where there were three thousand one hundred and twenty one people, well three thousand one hundred and twenty three now. Thank god I had two months to settle in and get familiar with my surroundings, especially the people, before enduring a new torture.

The relief washed away when we were racing to the black BMW under the rain. ‘Don’t worry Lilia.’

That was what everyone at home used to call me, Lilia; I liked it because it reminded me of flowers. I felt uneasy and homesick; I took calm slow deep breaths. Don’t cry Alexya, not now, I reminded myself. ‘You’ll love the house, and Forks.’

I doubted it; I just stared at the unending green nature passing by in a blur. The rain became much more persistent, and I became much calmer. The sound of the drizzling raindrops on the car’s rooftop above us was very relaxing.

I was fixing my eyes on the beautiful nature when I saw a blur in the woods. I straightened. Alert, I turned to Frank ‘Did you see that?’ my voice was frantic.

‘See what, honey?’ He took his eyes from the road to look at me with interest.

‘Never mind’ I slumped back on the seat and focused on the blurry green image. The car slowed and turned into a brick driveway and in front of a two-storey white house.

The forest grew from every way. I had no neighbors nearby. The first hint of civilization was situated around the corner and down the street. Great, I thought to myself dryly. Dad cut the engine and faced me. ‘I have work, Al so here’s the key.’ He handed me the metal key in my white small hand. ‘I’ll help you carry the bags. The room upstairs to the right is yours and the other one is mine. You don’t have to unpack my bag, just get familiar with the house and relax.’

I sighed, arguing was no longer useful. I got used to Frank bailing out on me for the hospital. I reminded myself that it was for a good cause. I wanted to be alone anyway. I sensed the tears that I’ve been holding back since five hours resurfacing and with more power this time. I swallowed the gulp in my throat forcefully. I kept my voice calm and serious. ‘Will you be back early?’

‘I don’t know, Lilia. If I’m late, don’t wait for me.’ He paused with a smile then continued. ‘Come on; let me help you with the bags.’ I got out of the car and opened the trunk.

I had two small cases when Dad had only a big one. I grabbed my luggage and walked up the unsteady stairs of my new porch. I unlocked the door and stepped inside the manner.

I stood unmoving, my eyes sweeping the space. To my right, a glass dining table of four was centered in the room. Black and white photographs of all sizes were placed on each beige-colored wall. To my left, a red leather couch with two flanking armchairs tinted in the same color stood. An oak-colored oval coffee table was centered between the red furniture. A plasma TV was bolted to the wall facing the couch. This was the living room, I concluded. Impressive, Frank had good taste. A door was open and I could see a small round table with two simple chairs pushed to a window. I turned my gaze reluctantly to the wooden stairs built in the hall.

I climbed the steady steps silently with my baggage in hand. I faced two closed doors and opened the one Frank had pointed as mine. The room was pink. I groaned. Frank knew how much I hated that color. I didn’t have it in me to complain right now, I was missing Houston enormously. I threw my bags on my blood-red bed but didn’t open them, not yet. I was afraid that if I started unpacking this would crush me. I just grabbed Pooh tightly and stared around me until I caught my drained reflection on the wall-length mirror.

My lavender eyes were swollen with exhaustion, my pitch black straight hair clung to my face, because it was wet. I had tinted my fringe flashy blue as a tribute to Adam Lambert. It always caught people off guard. I think they were intimidated by me. Surprisingly, I felt smug that I was the only one to have tinted my hair. I felt special. Ha!

My navy t-shirt kissed my chest and shoulders because as my black pants did to my legs and my sneakers to my feet.

‘Bye honey!’ called Frank from downstairs before closing the door behind him. I sighed and detached my eyes from my pathetic look. I wanted to clear my head, breathe some fresh air so I decided to go take a walk into the strange woods.

I didn’t bother getting a coat. I wanted to feel the rain pour on my skin. I stepped in the kitchen but didn’t stop. I continued till I was outside in the backyard.

As soon as I stepped on the grass, I was immediately drenched with the rain’s downpour. I walked towards the immense trees. I wandered aimlessly for the perfect spot to sit on. The soil beneath my feet was muddy, the smell of pine trees was overpowering. I felt tired but I kept going, leaving sight of my house but I made sure that I was going on a straight path so that I’d know where to get back to when I’m calmed and had cleared my head.

Exhausted, I stopped and looked around me. I found a small rock under a tree and went to sit on it. As soon as I was under the tree’s safety, all my feelings of pain hit me with much power. This time, I let my tears fall. I hid my face between my hands while I sobbed quietly for the ache that’s been tormenting me for the past five hours. I didn’t want to be here; I wanted to be back in Houston with Becca– my best friend, and I wanted to be in the ranch again, taking care of Silver, my white horse. I wanted to be near Mom and Anthony but I wasn’t, I couldn’t. I was in Forks, the silence seemed too disturbing, and my quiet sobs echoed in the forest.

I bit my tongue, I shouldn’t make any noise. If anyone heard me, they’d think that I’ve been hurt or something bad had happened. I was hurt, and something bad did happen to me. I was taken away from the only place I called refuge; I’ve been brought to this town forcefully. I wished I had never told Dad that I was happy for him. I knew that he wouldn’t have moved to Forks without my acceptance. But I wanted him to be happy, so I let him take me away from Houston. It was my fault I was here.

I heard movements coming from a bush in front of me, my head snapped up to the noise. I started hyperventilating, this couldn’t be good. I held my breath and pressed my legs to myself. I shrunk to the tree. Maybe the person won’t notice me. He emerged from the bush.

The boy, or should I say man, was tan skinned and wore only shorts. It was freezing; I myself was shaking from the cold. His chest was wet and perfectly structured. I trailed my eyes to his abs. One word popped in my head: Wow. The stranger’s hair was cropped short and dark. He didn’t seem to notice me yet, he was looking at the dirt. I exhaled quietly. ‘Humph’ I heard him huff.

He froze when our eyes met.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN – DISTRACTION {Alexya’s POV}

‘HOW COULD YOU THINK I LIKE JOSH MORE THAN YOU?!?!!!’ I shrieked, feeling the anger rise as I took another breath.
After everything said yesterday night, after everything we’d been through, how could he get to that conclusion?! That stupid wolf, I loved him so much and he’s getting jealous of some guy that I just barely met! I glanced towards the door for a split second, considering of leaving him but thought better of it and returned my glare towards Seth who was frozen in place.
YMCA was still playing, and I had concluded that it was a bad idea.
“Damn it, Seth!” I groaned and turned the music off.
I didn’t turn around to face him; instead, I closed my eyes and took several calming breaths.
“Did you already forget what I had told you yesterday?” I whispered, knowing he could hear me with his glamorous super power.
No answer.

Had he left the room? I turned around and froze as I saw him sitting on the edge of his bed, his knuckles pressed to his eyes. I knew that it would only take me two little steps for me to beside him.
“I’m stupid,” his voice broke as a tear managed to escape the pressure of his fists over his eyes. I hated seeing him like this, it was heart wrenching but he brought it on himself.
“You are.” I nodded whilst I sat beside him.
“I’m sorry, Lilia.”
“You should be.” I replied, a smile playing on my lips.
He straightened slowly and turned his desperate gaze towards me. His bottom lip started trembling. I flung my arms around him reassuringly. “It’s because you’re stupid that I love you so much, Seth.” I cooed in a mumble.
He laughed once but tightened his grip around me.

We stayed in that state for a while, my ear pressed to his heart and his cheek warming the top of my head.
“Are you sure it’s not because I’m absolutely adorable?” Seth whispered, after a moment of silence.
I sighed; it was good to finally hear him joke. I giggled at how lame he could get.
“No.” I said abruptly, resuming my serious tone. “You’re definitely stupid.”
I looked up to see him pout innocently. I lifted my hand, pinched his cheek and pulled on it as I grinned wider. “I see it now,” I nodded, “you’re so cute!” I crooned as I pulled further on his cheek.

He sighed happily and placed his hand over mine. I released his cheek and took grip of his enormous hand.
“Do you still want me to sleep over?” Seth asked with a hesitant tonality deep in his beautiful voice.
I couldn’t bear staying alone at night, I was too afraid to have that dream again.

I was running, running in my nightmare’s black abyss, looking for him everywhere, my source of comfort, my light.
I screamed his name repeatedly until I had no voice anymore.
Then, the path seemed to clear for me, I was in the forest, fog veiled my route, it was dark and the trees stood unmoving, not a sound escaped the vast forest, not a breeze kissed my skin. I could still distinguish my whereabouts, however.

There, I saw him, lying limp on the muddy grass. Unmoving as the forest succumbed in a deep coma of stillness.
“Seth!” I shrieked and ran to where his body lay. I dropped to my knees abruptly. “Seth, Seth!! Answer me!” I pleaded between sobs.
He groaned weakly, and fluttered his lids open. “Li-Lilia, Lilia i-is th-that you?” He croaked.
I threw my arms around him and let the sobs bubbling inside me free. My hands landed on something wet that I assumed was the grass.
But I was
very wrong.

I straightened and stared, traumatized, at my bloody hands.
“Li-lia,” my Seth’s came out as a struggled whisper. “I’m cold, I’m so cold.”
I turned my glassy stare towards my best friend, new tears streamed down my face. “You can’t be cold.” I rubbed his arms frantically, trying to warm him as the denial engulfed me. “You’re not cold, no, no, no, you’re not cold.” I shook my head.
“Lilia, I’m—“
“Don’t say it.” I quickly cut him off, as another sob blurted out of me.
“I love you,
so much.” A single tear rolled down his cheek, slid down to his throat and dropped onto the puddle of blood.
His eyes started drooping, as though he was tired and just wanted to sleep.
“No, no, no. Don’t leave me.”
“Li...lia…” his words were too low for my hearing. “I-I...lo-love… you...”
“NO! NO! NO!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. I felt a chunk of my heart crumble to dust and vanish as the air I breathed transported it out of my system. The ache was like nothing I’ve ever felt. It broke me to pieces worse than when I’d learned the truth about my baby brother. My best friend, my Seth – he kept me from going over the edge of insanity – he couldn’t leave me.

His murmurs were cut short, his chest stopped moving and his beautiful brown pools were obscured from me, he had closed them shut.
“SETH!” I cried out, my pain echoed through the forest, making it once again alive with the protests of the animals that resided there.
It was over, I had lost him – I had lost myself.

“Lilia, Lilia what is it?” Seth asked in an alarmed tone. My heart pounded against my ribs, and my hand gripped his, a human would have protested at the immense force.
“Don’t. Leave. Me.” I whispered, as I turned my horrified expression towards him.
As soon as he’d seen me, I found myself draped in Seth’s large protective arms.
“I won’t leave you, never ever.” He tipped my chin so that he could look into my eyes.
He seemed to wipe the dampness from my cheek with his thumb. “I promise.” He whispered as he laid his lips to my forehead.

And thus for the next couple of days, Seth never left me, his protective arms always stayed wound around me at night, and the calm, soothing thump of his heartbeat chased all my fears away. His murmurs always assured me, promised me he’d always stay.
What would I ever be without Seth Clearwater? I wouldn’t know.

“Al! Are you ready yet?” Dad asked from downstairs.
I sighed, looking desperately at the mirror. Today was my first day of school. I groaned at the reminder. It couldn’t be that bad though, right?
I grabbed my cell phone and hid it in my pocket in case I get instantly rejected, I’d start texting Seth.
I sighed again, why couldn’t he be in my school?
I snatched my jacket, which had laid on the chair beside my desk, wore it and put the hood over my head, Seth would like that. I smiled, satisfied with my looks.
I took hold of my back pack, and sprinted down the stairs.
“Okay, I’m ready. Let’s go.” I smiled half-heartedly.
I felt my stomach churn and knot. I was extremely nervous, not because there were going to be about six hundred teenagers which none I knew, but because I was afraid that those teenagers would be different from the friends that I grew up with. I needed Seth to help me go through this, but I couldn’t rely on him all the time. I will have to face this sooner or later.
And in my case, it was sooner.

The rain poured heavily, which I was thankful for, I missed the amazing feel of the droplets splash onto my bare skin. It always calmed me, it reminded me of Seth’s heartbeat and the first time we’d met.
I let my gaze trail to the beautiful scenery while Dad drove me to school, thinking of how not long ago I was in Houston, with Becca and the sun constantly above us, and now here I was in Forks, the coldest and rainiest place in the continental US – but I was ecstatic, I’ve never been this happy before. Seth Clearwater was the reason.

“We’re here.” Dad declared as he turned around the corner, that revealed an old building, maybe dating from the early 90s. Its somber colors aroused the melancholy in me. A perfect orange sign stood on the wet lawn announcing proudly: Forks High School.
I saw the crowds of kids my age, older, and younger, walking towards the big mansion, whether they were alone, with someone, or in a group.
Dad curved to another part of the school campus, and stopped in front of a set of stairs that led to the separated buildings.
“Good luck, honey.” Dad leaned to plant a soft kiss on my cheek. I smiled lightly.
“Love you, Dad,” I said as I got out of the BMW.

I spotted the shocked stares of a few students while I walked to the administrative office.
I walked confidently, not looking at anyone particularly, just focusing on my destination.
The school looked beautiful to me, the nature surrounded me everywhere I go, the rain thumped harder, the drizzle made my heart calm and my mind travelled to another town, not far from here – where the most important person in my life resided.

I pushed open the glass door, and stepped into the warm room, an old-looking lady sat on the counter, sipping coffee. She looked over a few files, and seemed totally focused on what she had in her hands. The plaque placed on the counter read: Mrs. Cope – receptionist.
Mrs. Cope had grey hair, she’d cropped it short. Little spectacles perched on the end of her nose, showing the great aging transformation that we’d all go through some day.
She was petite-sized, and wore the simplest of outfits. A white scarf was draped securely around her neck.

“Excuse me?” I asked as politely as I could.
Her gaze lingered up to meet mine. I could see the shock on her eyes, for just a second, then smiled at me warmly. “How can I help you, dear?”
“I’m Alexya Wood; I came here to get my time table.” I smiled politely.
Recognition brightened her icy blue eyes, “Oh! I have it right here.” She shuffled through the mountain of papers on her desk and seemed to stop at the sight of a small rectangular paper which she handed to me.
“Thank you, Mrs. Cope.”
“No problem, sweetie pea. Do you want me to find someone to guide you through the school? It can be quite dizzying.” She chuckled lightly.
I smiled wider. “No, thanks. I think I can find my way.”
“Okay.”

I turned around, kept my gaze on the paper I was just given, pulled the door and stepped into the freezing weather.
The paper read that I had Trig first, and it was in Building 4. I flipped the paper to look at the school’s map and started walking, my eyes glued to the sheet.

The drizzling rain helped me tune out the few murmurs that came around me.
“I heard that she had to tint her hair blue she’s in a gang…”
“They said it’s a way of surrendering to Satan…”
I rolled my eyes at people’s ignorance as I let my mind wonder to somewhere else, where looks didn’t matter, but it was what the heart spoke that made the difference.

Suddenly, I felt myself running into a large figure. I heard the loud thump of books resonating in my ears.
“I’m so sorry,” I sighed as I bent down to help the person I had ran into. My eyes trailed up to the individual’s expression and froze.
Josh.

I saw the flash of shock in his electric blue eyes that soon disappeared and was replaced by acknowledgment. He smiled crookedly. “Hey, Alexya.”
I felt the increasing warmth emerge in my face, and knew instantly that I was blushing darkly. It was a bit ironic that only two people could make me blush, and one of them I barely knew.
“Hi,” I smiled and stood up, handing him his books.
“So, where are you going?” He asked, his eyes glowed with something familiar, something I had distinguished somewhere else, but it wasn’t as pure. I shook my head and gazed down at the map in my hand. “Building 4” I mumbled.
I heard his raspy chuckle and snapped my head up to glare at him. “Why are you laughing?!” I scowled.
“Because you’re going the wrong way!” he laughed harder as he snatched the paper from my hand, turned it and pointed at a rectangle marked with a 4. “You were going here.” He trailed his finger to the opposite building marked with a 1.
Embarrassment flooded me. “Oh,” was all I could pronounce.
“Come on, I’ll show you around.” He slung his arm around my shoulders.
It felt wrong yet pleasant to have him touch me like this. I ignored the few glares and whispers from the other girls.
“You’re a sophomore, right Alexya?” Josh’s husky voice brought me back to reality.
“Uhh – yeah… Um … What about you?” I looked up to see him frowning, I had the instant desire to soften those creases.
“I’m a junior.”
I nodded, but said nothing else.

I felt a bit of a traitor to Seth, letting Josh walk with me like this in public. Something in the pit of my stomach reacted brutally and my heart ached. I didn’t understand why but I knew that it happened when I remembered my best friend.
“Show me the paper you have, again.” I shook my head abruptly to cleanse myself from my thoughts and handed him the sheet without a word.

There seemed to be a moment of silence then he sighed. “I guess I’ll see you in fourth period, we have Calculus together.” I could hear distinctively the smile in his voice.
