The Twilight Saga

This is not a story, this does not have quotations, this is the history of the Volturi.

The Volturi, are the Vampire royal family. Our kingdom, is Volterra, Italy.
The Volturi have lasted for over three thousand years, if not more. They are the largest coven in existence, followed by Carlisle's family and Tanya's. However they do not follow a "vegetarian" diet, as seen in New Moon, in which they capture and murder several humans in a carefully planned "meal". They are considered the de facto royal family of vampires, as they are the largest and most influential coven in existence. The Volturi deal swiftly and decisively with anything they consider a threat to the Vampire world. They destroy anyone who attempts to overthrow them, or resist their authority and, at Caius's insistence, have hunted werewolves (true werewolves, not shape-shifters) to near extinction in Europe and Asia.

The Volturi Coven was founded by Aro. When the coven was strong enough, the Volturi usurped control of the vampire world, from the Romanian Coven. At some point, the Romanian Coven tried to regain control, but the Volturi defeated them. The Volturi have ruled the vampire world for centuries by the start of the series. During that time, they did a number of things to ensure stability in the world, including eradicating the Immortal Children and cleaning up after the Vampire Wars in the southern parts of America. At some point, Caius was almost killed by a werewolf in a fight. Becoming terrified of his people's mortal enemies, he pushed the Volturi to hunt them to near extinction in Europe, and Asia. At one time, Marcus and his wife Didyme, who was also Aro's sister, planned on leaving the Volturi. Aro was upset by this, but appeared to give them his support. However, Aro later secretly killed Didyme to prevent Marcus from leaving. Carlisle, at one time, came to stay with them. The Volturi liked him greatly, but were unable to persuade him to hunt humans instead of animals. Carlisle eventually left, and established his own coven in America. Eleazar also was once part of the Volturi guard, but left with Carmen. The two later found the Denali Coven and stayed with them

(history/legend of the Volturi, I will also be posting up the history of Caius, Aro, Marcus, Alec, Jane, Felix, and Demetri. Hope this is somewhat helpful for you guys.)

The Volturi's special Powers

The Volturi are known for their amazing and special powers. Jane and Alec, twins and members of the guard, are credited and worshipped for having the most useful powers. Jane can cause someone to believe that they are feeling pain. This excruciating pain makes it easy for the Volturi to attack and destroy their enemies. Alec's powers are also useful when attacking the enemy. He can cut off all senses making the prey unable to see, hear or feel anything, enabling them to kill the victims without a fight. Aro, one of the leaders, can hear every single thought a person/vampire has ever had. The only way he can do this is if he has physical contact. Marcus, also one of the leaders, can sense relationships. Demetri, a member of the guard, is a tracker. He can track a person down once he has the tenor of their mind. He is known as the best tracker in the vampire world. Renata, also a member of the guard is a shield. She shields Aro and stands by his side at all times. She is described in Breaking Dawn as being so close to Aro it appears she is touching him, moving with him as "being so close , her hands slightly outstretched, her hands look to be "stuck" on Aro's cloak. She shields physical attacks. When the person/vampire is attacking she repels them by confusing them. They end up going in a different direction and are unaware of what they were doing in the first place. Chelsea, another member to the guard, can manipulate the ties of relationships. This is useful when The Volturi want a specific vampire to join them. Also useful is how she can loosen the binds of The Volturi's enemies, turning them against each other. They formerly had the services of Eleazar, who could see abilities or potential abilities in vampires and humans, though he left after meeting his soulmate, Carmen.
Alec Volturi's Biography

Alec is a member of the Volturi and is one of the highest ranked guards. He has a sister named Jane. In the New Moon film adaptation, Cameron Bright has been cast to play Alec.
Alec has an extremely powerful gift which is equally powerful as his twin Jane’s. He has the ability to cut off a person's senses. He can make them blind, deaf, and numb to any feeling if he wishes to. When he uses his gift, it appears in the form of a clear hazy mist. Unlike Jane's power, Alec can cut off a multiple number of people's senses while Jane can only inflict her power on only one person in her focus. When he attempted to use it on the Cullens and the vampires they had gathered as witnesses, Sam Uley's pack and Jacob Black's pack, the 'mist' slowly crawled towards the group. Upon hitting Bella's 'shield', it went around it, making Bella's shield look like a bubble of protection (which it was). Alec did not retract his 'mist' for the entire confrontation, constantly looking and probing for holes or weak spots in Bella's shield.
Aro Volturi's biography

Aro is one of three vampires who lead the Volturi. He is widely accepted as the overall leader of the Volturi, and possesses the gift of tactile telepathy, the supernatural talent to ascertain the thoughts of a person with a single touch. Michael Sheen has been cast to play Aro in the film adaptation of the series.
Approximately a decade after having been transformed into a vampire, Aro also changed his sister Didyme, with hope that she would posses an ability akin to his. However, she was blessed with an ability not as useful to him; the power to make people happy. Aro's colleague Marcus fell in love with her, and she with him. However, Marcus and Didyme eventually became discontent being involved with Aro's rising organization, the Volturi. In order to prevent their leaving, Aro killed Didyme: Marcus was too integral to his plans to lose. Aro then had Chelsea use her ability to ensure Marcus remained loyal to the Volturi. By 500 AD, the Volturi had usurped control of the vampiric world from the Romanian Coven. Aro ruled the Volturi, along with Marcus and Caius, although he generally acted as its' spokesperson. The Volturi, under the three ancients' leadership, set down the laws of the vampire world and severely punished those who did not adhere to them. Carlisle Cullen came to live with the Volturi for some time, and became close friends with Aro. However, Aro was alarmed at Carlisle's preference to "vegetarianism", and believed that this would only weaken him over time. Carlisle eventually left to find other vampires like himself.
Caius Volturi's biography

Caius was born about 1000 BC, and at some point became a vampire. He later joined the Volturi, along with Aro and Marcus. It is unknown if Caius ever met or known Didyme, Marcus's wife and Aro's genetic sister, or if he knows that Aro killed her himself. Later two female vampires joined the Volturi: Sulpicia and Athenodora, who both were cousins. Athenodora later became Caius's wife. Some 2000 years before Breaking Dawn, he was nearly killed by a werewolf in a fight, and never got over it, so he hunted werewolves to near extintion. He also participated in the extermination of the Immortal Children, which he deemed to be dangerous.
Demetri Volturi's biography

Demetri has an olive complexion with a chalky pallor, and dark hair that reaches his shoulders. He is described as tall and lean. He is perceived to be very polite. His special ability is tracking. He catches the "tenor" of a person's thoughts, and is drawn to it. It is believed that he would not be able to track Bella, since she is protected from mind-based abilities.
Felix Volturi's biography

Bella describes him as "very big, tall, and thick", and that his size reminds her of Emmett Cullen. He is described as having an olive complexion which looks odd combined with his chalky pallor. He also has short, cropped, black hair. He is not gifted, unlike most of the Volturi. It is assumed that he is kept in the guard because of his immense strength.
Jane Volturi's biography

Jane is a sadistic guard of the Volturi and a pet of Aro's. She seems rather bitter and easily justifies inflicting pain on anyone with her power. Jane and her twin brother Alec reside in Volterra, Italy. The Volturi had their eyes on Jane and Alec as potential people to change back when they were still human, but were waiting until they were older to change them. When frightened humans tried to burn the twins at the stake because of suspected witchcraft, Aro stepped in. Because of all she went through, she gained her power of being able to voluntarily inflict an illusion of antagonising pain. Aro was forced to change them while they were still young and kill every human who tried to burn the twins. Jane has since become one of the prize members of the Volturi Guard.
Marcus Volturi's biography

Marcus has the ablility to recognize relationships. Stephenie Meyer described Marcus's powers as the following: "Marcus’s gift is actually quite valuable in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. For example, imagine Marcus on the battle field. He sees the binding ties between the enemy the guard faces. He can tell who the leader is just by watching the way the others are tied to him or her. He can see how to destroy the resistance simply by picking off a few key people. He doesn’t just see romantic relationships, but also ties of family and friends, loyalty and devotion. He can tell if any given person would die for another. Off the field of battle (as the Volturi rarely leave their home), Marcus’s gift is valuable politically (for lack of a better word). It’s an amazing gift in a diplomatic situation. Plus, when you’re sitting on an empire, it’s nice to be able to see when someone’s loyalty starts wavering. Or if anyone is getting too fond of anyone else. Can you see the potential now? Marcus didn’t get where he is with some fluff skill." When Marcus first encounters Bella and Edward, he is surprised by the intensity of their relationship. He shares this information with Aro mentally and never utters a single word.
