“Six months,” Siren whispered to herself as she crossed out another day on the calendar; keeping track of how many days she had been away from home. How long she had been out of contact with her family. Today marked six months, half a year and she still missed them like crazy. There was no way she was going back; the moment she stepped through the front door they’d be haling her off to the lab. She might be the youngest child, and she might be breaking the law, but that mattered little to her, after all she was still human.
“Are you ready?” Tanner, her partner in crime, asked from her doorway. Tonight was also the night they were going to make their biggest mark yet. She nodded and turned away from the calendar, not wanted to be reminded of her family, yet they seemed to be the only thing keeping her sane in all this madness.
Neither she nor Tanner said a word as they helped apply each other’s make up, masking each other’s faces to look like skeleton zombies. When she was in makeup, it was the only time she could look at herself in the mirror; that was who she really was now, not some preppy, blonde cheerleader; but a zombie. A sign of the rebellion that really only had one ending – death. She was okay with that, for her; she had lost three of her members to the bullets. Tanner and her where the last of the Red Bullets (a name given when their first member was taken and all they got of him was a bullet soaked in his blood), they needed to do something big to show they were not forgotten.
It was shocking really; Siren’s group was one of the most well-known in the city. It was mostly because of Tanners daring art work that tested the mind and dumbfounded the police.
The Zombies protested for peace; how long would that last? Siren asked herself that every night since she ran away. Something was bound to happen that led to a violent rebellion. She did not need to think of that, for all she knew, she’d be dead before she saw that happen.
As she finished applying the black goop to Tanner’s eyelids, she waited for him to look at her before staring into his beautiful blue eyes that were not the only color on his face. “Be careful out there, I can’t lose you.” He smiled the smile that was meant only for her and made her blush every time. He kissed her; the two of them smearing there white lips together before pulling away.
“Same to you.”
The hit the streets the moment nightfall hit; their faces caked with makeup, and the rush of feeling alive running threw them. The worse back hoodie, their hood covering their faces until it was time. No use getting caught sooner than plan. They kept a distance between each other until they reached the wall that was now their canvas.
The two of them shared a smile before getting to work on the latest peace Tanner had sketched. This one was a needle, dripping a red vile dripping from the tip. Around it were eyes, Tanner and Siren saw them as the eyes of the babies that were born, or soon to be born and forced to go into the lab once they are older. To anyone who saw the art, the eyes could be anyone.
Art was seen in the eye of the beholder.
It took them all night, by the time Siren’s paint-covered hand whipped the sweat from her brow, smearing most of the makeup on her forehead, it was dawn. A few people had crowded around the wall, most knowing they were zombies and all amazed by the artwork before them. Most of the people in town respected the zombies, they spoke out in a way others could not. Most parents did not want to send their kid off to become a lab rat, only those who signed the forms willingly were heartless.
“I think this is our best work,” Tanner smiled at Siren before hugging her. They were going to have to leave before the sun rose to high and the police came. “Let’s go before – “But he never finished, without warning, a bullet pierced his side and he fell into her arms bleeding.
She screamed out to whoever had done that as Tanner died in her arms.
Her world went numb, she knew there was nothing she could do, and she had to get out of there before she was shot to. “I love you” She whispered before setting his lifeless body one the ground and running to take cover. A few bullets were fired off, but she got behind a dumpster just in time. Tears were in her eyes, but she was not going to let her emotions get the best of her, not yet anyway. She was breathing hard as she tried to calm herself.
“Are you alright – did you – did you get shot?” Siren turned suddenly to meet the eyes of a young girl, about the age of fourteen staring at her.
