In my own opinion he did an awesome job in trying to win Bella's heart. I feel if Bella didn't meet Edward first Jacob would have stolen her heart first. Also, I feel that the love Bella has for Jacob is the reason why in Breaking Dawn Jacob imprints on Renesmee. Bella & Edward's love is pure and that gives Renesmee life. So when Renesmee see's Jacob for the first time this is Bella's pure love he sees. What do you guys think about this?
