The Twilight Saga

I thought Meyer dealt with Bella changing to a vampire really well, we all knew it was coming, just how. Somehow I prefered bella as a human with all her vulnerabilities and her angst, I perfered the realtionship with Edward as the fierce protector (particularly against Victoria on the mountain in Eclispe.) Since Bella became a vamp she started fending for herself which I felt took away the potency of their intimate connection. Anyone feel the same?

Not at all. I think it just made bella more aware of what she was meant to be and who she is suppose to be with. Bella is still the same person she was when she was human. There isn't nothing different except being vampire. I think it just made edward and bella closer than what they could be.
yeh, i sorta do, but i don't think he'd ever stop trying to protect her, she'll be a lot more vunerable after a year anyway & he's a lot smarter & more of an experienced fighter.
suppose she's still the same, just stronger now.
& obviously more beautiful.
o & immortal haha.
Yeah, there are definitely big positives out of becoming a vampire... not to mention the marathon sessions in the bedroom. Still, I think their story has ended now she is immortal.
I understand how you feel, and agree with you. It was hard for me to get used to her when she was so able to protect herself, it was almost like she didnt need Edward. I know that they're in love, so it doesnt matter what form she is in b/c they love eachother no matter what...but the loss of her vulnerablilites is a hard concept to change. Its pretty much her personality and to take away the accident prone Bella and replace her with a super strong, immortal Bella does seem to remove some form of intensity from their relationship.
I kinda do but i also think it let edward be closer to bella than in the other books
i kinda like her better as a vamp because i didnt like edward as much when he was being overprotective!!! i mean dont get me wrong... i love him to death but he overreacted wayyyy too much. plus now bella can finally punch jacob and actually hurt him!!!!!!!!! :) also bella and edward dont fight as much.
I really like the idea of Bella punching Jacob again :D
And I prefer Bella as a vampire too :)
I don't think it matters how strong or able to defend herself Bella is, Edward will always be her protector and always feel the need to protect her. I think her becoming a vampire made them closer because they were truly on the same level of perception then. Before, he experienced things he could never explain to her. Now their understanding of one another is even more complete. She has new eyes for him both in the physical sense as well as the figurative/emotional sense. Not to mention it helped Bella grow as a person and a character. She was able to have a bit more maturity that I think was needed to help the character progress from girl to woman. She'll always need Edwards protection, it's just that it might not always come in the physical form now. She'll always have vulnerabilities in some form, as will Edward. That's just part of being living creatures. I don't think Edwards desire to protect her have waned in the least bit. Not to mention, there are also other vampires that he can protect her from, or perhaps a renegade pack of werewolves. :) It would be nice of Stephanie to write in a bit of that were she to progress with the story again because it did lighten up a bit in BD. But at the same time, I think Edward knew there was no way to keep Bella from the fight with the Volturi as she's a mother now and a mother will never NOT be there on the front line to protect her child. It's her right as a mother.

I'm very happy she became a vampire because in 98% of the other teen vampire books I've ever read, the girl stays human for one reason or another. It was a nice change that Stephanie let Bella take the plunge. If she hadn't, I'd be very dissatisfied with the books. I'd really like to see another book after Breaking Dawn, perhaps set a bit in the future with Renesme grown up a bit and Bella and Edward having their own time alone finally. Where Bella is able to explore her new self and her husband a bit more. I'd like to see her be able to use her new ability to show Edward her thoughts so we can relive the past with him as she shows him certain moments of their lives together.

I can understand what you mean though. I just don't think she would have had room to grow if she had stayed human and Edward had to constantly protect her in the same way.
Thank-you for your thoughts. I agree with you that Bella would not have grown or developed further without the inevitable change. Maybe I am just a true romantic at heart and loved the classic (but with a twist) love-story between them both.
Bella was alway very strong minded and her new strength certainly suits her and carries her forward as a character. Perhaps their story is complete now and we can rest a little that Edward and Bella are indeed on a level realm.
I 100% agree about being the romantic at heart. I think that's part of why these sorts of books speak to women. The strong, protective male role is something that even the strongest and most independent of us girls swoon at in some portion. I'm happy with the way the books ended so if we never get another I'm content. I just think there are still ways for him to be just as strong and protective of her while allowing her to be strong and indestructible. It's his nature.
I 100% agree. The whole beauty of their relationship was that even though she was human and he was not, they loved each other. The fact that edward loved bella enough NOT to make her what he is, was a true testiment of his love for her. Now I understand bella's temptation of wanting to be with him forever because she loves him, but she should have stayed human.

Plus did you notice how stephanie really got edward off the hook with that? What I mean is, you see in twilight, new moon, & even eclipse that edward really does not want bella to become what he is. even though he has made a deal with bella concerning her immortality, he really is hoping to prolonge it as much as possible in hopes that she will change her mind. But when stephanie gives them a child, it changed things. she could have easily made Renesme to be more of bella's human make up and just some of edward's. If she wrote it this way, then bella could have carried & given birth without it threatening her life. Therefore edward's hand would not have been forced to make her what he is. Cuz we already know how much he loves her, we know he's not just going to let her die; and that's how he was let off the hook of turning her.

In the beginning after they are married you even see bella rethinking things and hesitating a bit on becoming immortal. once she knows that it's possible for them to be physical with one another without him killing her. So I really did not like that bella became a vampire. I'm happy that they got their happy ending, but I feel that her becoming immortal just took something very important and vital away from where the 1st 3 books were leading concerning edward & bella's relationship.
yeah, she kind of felt a little bit like a different person when she could defend herself and not with edward be so over protective, but i still think that bella should be a vampire, i got so all annoyed when she thought about put it to a later date and stuff. but its all right now ^^
