Bella's emotional roller coaster like "stroll" through Port Angeles. "WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?"

After leaving Jessica and Angela at the dress shop, Bella strolls in to one of the most memorable scenes in the "Twilight Saga." On seeing (but not identifying) Edward Cullen's car parked across the street, Bella mentally screams, "Stupid Shiny Volvo Owner." When she finally reaches "the book store." she refuses to even enter, since it specializes in new age books, astrology, and crystals. She then walks on to interact in two key "Twi-experience" that seem atypical of our Bella. Twi-harders know that Bella is a very brave woman. BS,Q: "I am not afraid of dying. I am only afraid of loosing you." BS,Q: " Don't kill him, take my life instead." BS, on James's taped interview, Quote: "Don't Edward. Please don't try to avenge my death." But we see a very different Bella, when she discovers that she is being stalked by Lonnie's gang. When she first learned that Lonnie's gang was stalking her, she become more and more terrified. (Lonnie's gang seems to terrify Bella, much more that the Volturie) When she comes to consciously understand that Lonnie's gang is not interested in taking her $21 dollars, but is determined to molest and then kill her, she lacks the confidence and courage that she will repeatedly show in the future. She even has to remind herself to breath. When she turns the corner and discovers that Lonies gang has HERDED her into a molestation and killing zone. Her terror rises even higher. Then to add to the confusion, a car screeches to a halt. (Comming with in inches of injuring Lonnie) Then from behind her, Bella hears four words: "Get in the car!" And astonishingly ALL of Bella's fears totally vanish

White Rose Discussion Question: Why do you think that Bella seemed to be so much more terrified as she awaited her death by Lonnie's gang, than she did when she was confronted by James, or the Volturie? Laurant Quote "I am doing you a favor by killing you. Victoria (for her enjoyment) plans to torture you for a long time, before she finally allows you to die." (pp)

As always we sincerely look forward to learning your opinion.

> Hi doc!!! Glad you decided to have this discussion. I so loved this part of the saga since I've read Midnight Sun.
Well I think that Bella was so terrified because at that time she felt alone in a way. She didn't know that she had a beautiful vampire in love with her and was ready to sprung in when she was in danger, let alone a whole clan of which. As Bella always is, she puts all the responsibility on her shoulders, even to defend her self against those monsters. She was scared because she wasn't a girl who've faced that kind of threat before, and even if she has, none of us would be able to get used to that sort of ordeal. As a girl, I think I have a pretty clear picture of what that would've felt.
But then she still summond her courage remember when she was recalling on how to incapacitate an attacker? (That was so Bella!)

Why do you think that Bella instantly became so calm, the moment she heard Edward's voice?

> Well she had a vague conception of what Edward was by that time and so she did feel he would be enough to deal with all her qualms. Plus, she always felt secured with him ( a sub conscious consecquence of her being madly in love).
Hi Doc,

White Rose Discussion Question: Why do you think that Bella seemed to be so much more terrified as she awaited her death by Lonnie's gang, than she did when she was confronted by James, or the Volturie? Well I feel it is because she is in a new town, doesn;t know her way around...And Lonnie's gang was more than just 2 people, she knew she was out numbered, she knew she was a clutz, she knew her own faults basically...she could not save herself. When she realized what they might have had planned for her it was a terrify thought to her..To have to possibly die that way. with Lonnie's gang so did not know what to expect......But with the vampires she had a better sense of knowing what would happen, they bite her and feed on her, she dies. She knows how strong they are, so she would not be able to fight her way out of it.

Because Bella had already accepted what he was and knew she was safe the minute he arrived to save her. She trusted him and was falling in love with him.

Just my thoughts
Fran
Great point and well said Fran.

Dear Fran,
Great thoughts as usual. I think that you hit on a key point. Bella knew that she just wasn't going to be killed she was going to be molested and then killed. She had just fallen in love, for the first time in her life. And though her love was still very young. I think that she instinctively wanted to physically save herself for Edward. And she didn't want to loose her potential "gift to him" to some slimy gang of bums.

I also agree with you about Bella's confidence in Edward. I think she was aware of his incredible physical power. And I think that (by the way she stood up to him..visa vie) She already fully trusted him. BS,Q: "No! Not bad! Never bad!"
Just a follow up thought.

Just an extra, extra credit question

If Edward hadn't been there, and Bella had become pregnant by one or more of Lonnie's gang, how do you think Edward would have reacted to the possibility of raising one or more of Lonnie's offspring????

Doc,
You ask a interesting question.....I would like to think that if Bella was happy with being pregnant and raising that child under the circumstances in was conceived in, then Edward would have been fine with helping to raise it also.
You can't blame a child for how they come into the world.

I'm sure that Edward would have blamed himself horribly for not being there to protect her, as I am sure he would have seen to it that Bella wanted and needed for nothing. He would go over board as usual trying to help her thru the pregnacy and probably go out and buy anything and everything for the baby.

There would always be a part of Edward that would watch the child as it grows, to be looking for any signs that it might turn out like it's father. But as long as Bella loved the child so would Edward.

Just my thoughts
Fran
She was terrified of the gang because there were too many men and she was only one. She did think about how to remember to do the self defense but she did mention that it probably wouldn't help because there were too many. She didn't want to die because she was young and single and just met Edward. She didn't understand why she couldn't get Edward out of her mind so when she saw the volvo she was upset because he was in her thoughts. She felt alone and before she knew anything about love or power of love.

Reason why she wasn't scared of Volturi or any other vampires is because she was in love and knew that nothing would happen without any fight. She began to know what to expect because Cullens did warn her but she was stubborn because of Edward. She began to realize she had strength inside of her when they were about to kill Edward and she was like I can't let them do this so told them to kill her instead. That is the power of love. She also had the Cullen family behind her back so if anything happened they probably would have done something for her. She never wanted to see Edward hurt even though he is much much more stronger than her just a mere human being.

She became calm right after she heard Edward's voice because subconsciously she was in love with him and knew he would protect her. She always felt safe with him even though he is a vampire.

Hope its good enough.... I probably will remember something else LOL... so hope it is enough for now
Well, I have 2 logical answers for the 1st question.
a. Death is unavoidable, so that was never a fear of Bella's. The Volturi are civilized people . . . erhm. . .vampires so her death would have came quick and easy. Jame's was only in it for the hunt, not anything else. Lonnie's gang on the other hand wasn't civilized they would have molested her first. Personally, if I had the choice of being molested and killed or just being killed; I'd choose the 2nd option.
b. Bella has been described as being the responsible parental type. I remember hearing that when a Mama Bear sees one of her cubs in trouble she gets three times her normal strength. I'm guessing the same principle applies here. When Edward's and her Mother's safety was at risk she became stronger.

As for the 2nd question:
I think her reaction was normal. When I was younger I was in choir, but I was terrified of performing on stage. I was trembling and shaking, but then I saw my mom in the audience waving to me. Automatically, I wasn't scared anymore. Sometimes a familiar face is the only thing you need to calm you down.
Sometimes a familiar face is the only thing you need to calm you down.

I never thought of it like that. I could see how that would make Bella feel better instantly.
omg good points Daisy!!! :) brilliant thoughts!
Thanks Toni
Here Bella is not only being followed by one person but by a few more and it terrifies her because like you said doc they are not interested in money, this is something that in phoenix in all probability has never happen to her. At this point she knows that no one knows where exactly she is, it scares her to death knowing whats coming next and that theirs nothing she can't do against four men. Even if she didn't demonstrated to much that; she was scared. Also Bella was tough she wasn't going down without a fight and she said to herself that she is taking one of them down with her. Her adrenaline was so high she hid her fear for the moment so that lonnie's gang couldn't tell she was scared. So in all it was a mixture of terror and toughness, I don't think Bella is the type of girl to go down in a fight without making sure she takes someone with her. In a situation like hers anybody it doesn't matter if is a male or female your always going to be scared and the person who says they weren't well they are lying. As soon that she saw the car and heard Edward's voice she felt a relief because her is someone she knows will save her as he's done before and by this point she knows he's well capable of protecting her and himself, is the one voice that calmed her because to her he's her guarding angel and dhe feels safe when he's around. A point on the first question she was more affraid of lonnie's gang for what they can physically, morally and mentaly do to her ; James, the Volturie, Laruant, Victoria all they do is kill her quickly because her scent is intoxicating to them she probaly won't feel a thing .
Very well said Manuel.
