You are my life now, Rather die than not be with you, Silly Lamb and Masochistic lions. Scene analysis “ The Meadow”

“ .THE DECLARATION”
When “The Great” Jane Austen created the modern novel.(Her masterpiece Pride and Projective at age 18) she knew that “The Declaration” (the moment the two lovers declared their love for each other) Would always be “the critical moment” in any Romance Novel.
Today’s scene analysis is study is of “The Declarative Moment” in the novel “Twilight. It is often referred to as: “ The Meadow scene,” “Chapter 13,” and “Stephanie Meyer’s dream scene”

In a novel love can be expressed, through the use of external or internal dialog or actions. “Twilight uses all three.
This analyses consists of some examples of expressions of endearment between Bella and Edward. And today’s questions are:

.
Question No 1. What emotions or feeling were aroused in you as you read chapter thirteen ?

Question No 2. Which two or three of Bella’s actions or statements did you find most endearing? And Why ?

Question no 3 Which two or three of Edwards actions or statements did you find most endearing ? And Why ?

Question no 4; What other information would you like to share with the discussion group about this topic.

Bella “ I knew three things. One: Edward was a vampire. Two: A part of him, and I didn’t how potent a part that might be, thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irreconcilably in love with him.”

Later in the day as Edward listens in on Bella’s admissions to Jessica he hears:
Jess “Do you like him ?”
Bella, “Yes.” I said.
Jess “But do you REALLY like him ?
Bella “Yes I said,” again blushing.
Jess “How much do you like him?”
Bella: “TOO MUCH.” I whispered back. “More than he likes me.”
In the Cafeteria Edward says:
“Your wrong, you know. About your likening me more than I do you.”

Bella: I reached out one finger and stroked the back of his shimmering hand.
I inched closer stretched out to trace the contours of his whole forearm. With my finger tips. My fingers trembled, and I knew it wouldn’t escape his notice . Do you mind ?” I asked.
Edward: “You can’t imagine how that feels.”
Bella: I lightly traced the muscles in his arms. I followed the faint patterns of blue in his veins. Then with my other hand I reached to turn his hand over.
Bella: He opened his eyes and they were hungry ! But not in a way to make me fear, but rather to tighten the muscles in the pit of my stomach. And send my pulse hammering through my veins again.

Edward: “I wish you could feel the complexity, the confusion I feel, that you could understand.”
Bella. “Tell me.”
Edward: “I Don’t think I can, on the one hand there is my hunger and my thirst (for you) from that deplorable creature that I am. But there are other hungers , hungers I don’t even understand, that are foreign to me.”
Bella: “I may understand that (type of hunger) more than you think !”
Edward: “I’m not so use to feeling human. Is it (the physical desire for another) always like this?”
Bella: For me ? No never. Never before this.”

Bella: The decision was all ready made.
There was nothing more terrifying , more excruciating than the thought of turning away from him. It was an impossibility.

Edward: “I don’t know how to be close to you.” He admitted. “I don’t know if I can.” Bella leans forward very slowly. And placed her cheek against his stone chest.
“This is enough I sighed.”
I looked into his eyes, abruptly grasping that this was every bit as new to him as it was to me. As many years of unfathomable experience as he had, this was hard for him, too.

Bella: I was afraid… because, for, well, obvious reasons, I can’t stay with you. And I’m afraid that I’d like to stay with you, much more than I should.
Bella :Common sense told me I should be terrified. Instead, I was relieved to finally understand. And I was filled with compassion for his suffering, even now, as he confessed his craving to take my life.

Edward: I should leave now BUT I DON”T KNOW IF I CAN”
Bella: “ I don’t want you to leave.” I mumbled pathetically.”

His eyes were tender. “Isabella. He said. “then playfully ruffled my hair. A shock ran through my body at his casual touch. “To never see you blush scarlet again. I couldn’t stand it he said,”
Bella, I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt you. You don’t know how it’s tortured me. The thought of you, still, white, cold… to never see you blush scarlet again, to never see that flash of intuition in your eyes when you see through my pretenses… it would be unendurable. You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.

Bella: You already know how I feel of course. I’m here, which roughly means that I would rather die, than stay away from you!”

Bella: “I’m an idiot!
Edward: “You are an idiot.”
And we laughed together.
Edward; “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.”
Bella: I look away hiding my eyes as I THRILLED to the WORD!
Bella: “What a stupid lamb.” Edward “What a masochistic Lion.”

Edward: “Be very still he whispered.”
Bella : As if I wasn’t already frozen.
He rested his cold cheek at the hollow at the base of my throat . With deliberate slowness his hands slid down the sides of my neck. Then softly moved to my shoulders and then stopped.
Then he rested the side of his face tenderly against my chest. Listening to my heart. I knew at any moment it could be too much for him and my life could end so quickly, that I might not even notice. And I couldn’t make my self be afraid. I couldn’t think of any thing except that he was touching me.

He took my face in his hands again. I couldn’t breath. He hesitated. Not in the normal way. Not the way a human man might kiss a woman. To gauge her reaction. To see how he would be received. Perhaps he would hesitate to prolong the moment. The ideal moment of anticipation, which was sometimes better than the kiss itself. Edward hesitated to test himself, to see if this was safe. And then his cold marble lips pressed very softly against mine. What neither of us was prepared for was my response… the blood boiled in my lips, my fingers knotted in his hair clutching him to me……

The next day: Bella jumps out of bed and into Edwards waiting arms. And she asks if she said any thing in her sleep. “You said you loved me” Edward said.
Bella whispers in his ear, “I love you!”
Edward answers “You ARE my life now.”

As always we look forward to learning your opinions on this topic.

Dear Tara,
T "I felt somewhat like Bella did" DB I remember a lecture I had in psycology class. The Professor said. When you go to a movie "you enjoy" You tend to identify with one or more of the characters on the screen. I never thought about it. But I have no problem identifying with most of Edwards thoughts and actions (not the monster or vampire stuff)

Jung would say that in every man and woman part of their Psyche can identify with the opposite sex. Because a portion of our Psyches contains both elements. That is why Stephanie can so easily think like both Bella and Edward. Or why Austen could speak so perfectly for Darcy or Elizabeth. I find it easiest to identify with Carlisle and then Edward, then Bella,(I think that Chief Swan and Jacob are fine characters but I just don't identify with them)
Just out of interest are there any other characters besides Bella that you sympathize or can identify with?
As I said I remember the Psychology Prof saying in monster movies some people identify with the victim others with the monster.

T "TOO MUCH!" Isn't that a wonderful line. Bella is soooooooooooo real. That's why Twilight is so wonderful. I don't know who your favorite bear is. But "this bear" agrees exactly with you in every point here. "More than he does me" Is so sad. As a plastic surgeon I use to see patients with inappropriate self images all the time. I remember once I, had this well known model who wanted me to alter her nose. Which I refused to do.
She kept saying that her nose wasn't right. I went into my waiting list and got a magazine with her picture on the cover. And I told her millions of women would give anything to have been blessed to have had her face. "Why don't we just try and accept that.." I said. All surgeries carry risks. I knew she would just go and have someone else change her face. But I was pleased when I saw she didn't. I think Bella must have had some of that in her. She was blessed to find a "vampire man" who refused to let her live with her delusion.

T" My second choice is tough, but I would have to say the moment when Bella first wakes up and bounces across the room jumping into Edward arms. It was just so unexpected and out of character for her. She had such a hard time showing emotions, but with Edward she was able to be herself....I think a version of herself she didn't even know existed.
DB What a wonderful and important observation. Their love changed her and gave her the freedom to be herself. Maybe for the first time in her life. Just think of the shy introverted girl being driven into forks only weeks before. Bouncing out of bed and jumping in the lap of the man she loves. And saying. "I LOVE YOU" How wonderful.

Your other points are just superb. But I love the one about a 100 year old vampire "who is in entirely new territory. Isn't it wonderful when he is physically attracted to her and asks (is it always like this) and Bella responds No Never for me. How perfect they are for each other.
What a wonderful analyses. Thank you so much for helping us better appreciate this discussion.
Your friend Doc

Thanks for the follow up. Buttons was saying that just maybe I had become your second favorite bear.
Your right you almost never hear questions about the meadow scene. But as I learned, it is a much more complicated scene than I imagined. But it will go down as a classic. I wish the movie could have done it more justice.

That is just one reason why I would enjoy midnight Sun.

It is interesting how we can identify with so many different characters. As I was relating “Twilight “ to my Psychiatrist friend. Over and over again he said “The author must have at one time experienced those feelings to have been able to express them so well.( I of course would never mention what he was referring to or even who he is)

That was interesting about the model I mentioned. Her nose did have a flaw. But it was one of those flaws that made her face appear even more beautiful. She had Gemma’s eyes.

You were the one who pointed out the flaw in Edward’s face which makes him more appealing to women, and not less in our Aesthetics debate.

You couldn’t be more right about Professor Buttons. He was the one that ended up, making me spend a week in bed for retrieving a single puppy biscuit. He has an endearing face. But just like Sneaky Cat you never know what lurks behind it.
.
.
Dear Tara,
I couldn’t agree with you more the meadow scene WAS the key to the entire book. What would the movie Moby D*** (Not a form of VD Sneaky Cat) have been with out the Whale.
Or King Kong if he hadn’t kidnapped the heroine.
That’s why I hope that when Midnight Sun comes out, I hope that they will do “Twilight” all over again. They did the Joker twice. And Pride and Projective 12 times.

Did I like Midnight Sun more than I like Twilight.
Wonderful, Wonderful Question.
No I didn’t. While I was responding to you and Gem and Nafsi about how men and women identify with male and female fictional characters it got me to thinking so I wrote a blog about it. It has been out for over an hour. But I am going to condense parts of it at this discussion, since it is so relevant.
I sent you a note about “the sleeping bag scene”

Your friend,
Doc b

Ps: Once you read the blog “Where did Edward come from, I need to have you answer the question (Is Jacob Black : Stephanie Meyers?) When you read the blog the reason for the question will become apparent.
Question No 1. What emotions or feeling were aroused in you as you read chapter thirteen ?

How did I feel? Excited, warm and fuzzy, sad at moments, it was such a build up to going to the meadow and as said in the "goodbye" discussion you feel what Bella feels, because again SM has written so brilliantly that you can become those characters for these big moments. So feeling for Bella i was excited, nervous, butterflies in the pit of my stomach, the usual when you meeting with the love of your life and nervous of the unknown of what he might show her.. I said i was sad, thats because when i read Edward talking about leaving and giving Bella warning against himself, there is sorrow(not bad, but it is there) to tell the person you love that you love them and in the same conversation your warning them because your dangerous is sad, if you get my meaning.. But most of all i love the meadow scene because they are just Edward and Bella and Edward finally opens up and explains himself for all his behaviour, and he sees that Bella really has excepted him for Edward not Vampire.. It has to bbe one of the best scenes in the books, its one of my favourites anyway. Its always beautiful to see people declare their love for another and this is beautifuuly written so it makes you feel hopelessly romantic and after i read the whole chapter i sighed lol

Question No 2. Which two or three of Bella’s actions or statements did you find most endearing? And Why ?

Bella: He opened his eyes and they were hungry ! But not in a way to make me fear, but rather to tighten the muscles in the pit of my stomach. And send my pulse hammering through my veins again
Bella: “TOO MUCH.” I whispered back. “More than he likes me.”
Bella “ I knew three things. One: Edward was a vampire. Two: A part of him, and I didn’t how potent a part that might be, thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irreconcilably in love with him.”

These 3 are the ones i choose as enduring, because the first one, I am posisitve that anyone who has been in love has felt that in their stomach, you stomach knotting because that person looks at you in the way that you look at them completely in love, wantng you bove anyone or anything else and it doesnt matter what age you are it happens to everyone, I know i've felt it with my other half the first time he looked at me that way and that again where Stephaine connects to the reader, even if you have experienced it yet being you havent found the one or are to young you know that is will happen and thats why i like that sentance.
Bella really believe that she likes/loves Edward so much more than he does because she really doesnt see herself clearly.. or see how much he does love her and having read Midnight Sun and seeing his reaction WE know as a reader he loves her but because he is not use to the human experiences he has not shown Bella a great deal on how he feels because he always talks in riddles, dont get me wrong he has stated things but not as clearly as Bella has but this shows her a reaction from him that i like because it proves she is wrong.
The last one i chose not just because of the wa she describes the way she loves him its the way she states the facts, she truely just excepts it for what it is, and it comes across as the first 2 points are not as important as the last point the fact that she loves him, and nothing changes that, like well he's a vampire, who wants my blood but you know what i am in love with and thats the most important thing. But that is Bella, she sees part appearances(well most of the time but thats edwards fauly for being dazzling), she sees whats inside the person.

Question no 3 Which two or three of Edwards actions or statements did you find most endearing ? And Why ?
“You said you loved me” Edward said.

I don't know why, i love this first one but makes me smile, it might be because it is the first time its actually said and how his eyes grew soft when he says as if, it was the most important words he'd ever heard.
The next is just so beautiful, even though i ve put the kiss next, this goes so much deeper, it gives me goosebumps, when i think how intense it is and how they both must feel in that moment, just completely lost in the moment. I f you've ever whated Ghost with Patrick Swayze, there is a part when he steps in the Whoopi Golbergs character and she gives him a chance to touch Mollie(Demi Moore), this it what it reminds me of.. This is why Stephaine needs to complete Midnight Sun so we can totally experience this scene through Edwards views i m sure it'll be so beautiful
Lastly the kiss, everyone loves a first kiss but as Bella describes its the build up to the moment sometime more tahn the kiss its self, and we all know that Edward wont hurt, but the humanism of the moment just makes your heart flutter and you know there is more passion between them than anyother character ib the moment and time and its just perfect

Question no 4; What other information would you like to share with the discussion group about this topic.

I think that chapter and the one's either side change. Afetr that scene the book is different and its just so beautiful, it makes you hope that everyone has this momemt intheir life so they experience it(ok maybe without the fact the one you love whats to kill you) but, that someon experiences that love and first kiss.. I know i have

Gem x
Dear Gema, Forgive me for not getting back to you sooner. My wife had one day in town so we spent it together. She is in Guadalajara today giving a lecture.
So I can get back to my posting.

G “Bella really has excepted him for Edward not Vampire..”
What an excellent point. It is interesting how much Edward and Bella are alike. Both harbor negative feelings about themselves. Both are naive about love.
Ginger -Head mentioned the sheer joy of jumping into the man of your dreams arms and saying “I love you!” (Voice of experience ? How do she know?*)

Your right it is so beautiful. As I said it will still be studied in English lit classes 50 years from now. I am glad we got to do the first serious academic analysis of it. I am certain in several colleges right now senior English majors are writing their senior papers on the topic.

G “WE felt what Bella felt” Yes we did.
That is what Jung was saying about the plurality of human nature. As I was reading the scene. I was actually experiencing it from Bella’s eyes. And also from Edward’s eyes.

In a letter to Stephanie (one of the million I doubt she saw) I reminded her how Jane Austen really WAS BOTH DARCY AND ELIZEBETH. And that that is why Pride and Prejudice was so magical.

And that was the reason she started on Midnight Sun. Because Step knows she is EDWARD. She said “I created Jacob from a composite of my wonderful brothers and his friends.” BUT EDWAQRD IS MY VAMPIRE!! Edward is her. Her maleness

I will right a post to explain it for you.

Your exactly right JUST LIKE BELLA EDWARD DOESN”T SEE HIMSELF CLEARLY.

“As if I wasn’t already frozen.” One perfect analogy after another.

“MY RESPONSE” Goose bumps EXACTLY, EXACTLY RIGHT!!! How wonderful each portion of the scene is.
First Kiss! Just try an imagine how wonderful that moment was.

What an excellent post .

Thank you so much for helping us understand this critical scene better.

Your friend,
Doc

Nafsi forgive me for taking so long to get to you. I am looking forward to reading your thoughts as always.
Don't worry. In America when something is hard to comprehend often some one will say "that's Greek to me. And since lots of what Ginger Head, Sneaky Cat, and Blondie say are "Greek to me!" it just makes sense.
lol Db

..
Dear Nafsi,
Yesterday we had a new Rose, join our group. Her profile said “I am from Greece” I had to smile thinking of you.

N “I never though that a book would make me feel like I did when I was reading those scenes. I can't even explain how I feel. My heart start bouncing”
Doc B :What a wonderful description of the magical transference abilities, Stephanie is blessed with. (Transference is “making you feel like you really are one or more of the characters)
N “Why are you smiling like that with no reason, have you lost your mind?") I feel the same every time I read this part, its like I'm falling in love myself.”
Doc YES YES. Exactly right. That is why Stephanie’s books are so different from other works. You put it so beautifully.

N “She chooses to have faith in him and puts their love above everything.”
What a wonderful observation. True love is when both partners are living for each other.

I belong to a religious sect called Christians. Those who don’t particularly like my faith love to point out the statement in our bible: “a wife should let the man lead” but what they never point out is the other statement (a man should be willing to die for his wife just as Christ died on the cross)

That’s what true love is, and you are right Stephanie described it perfectly.
We weren’t expecting “my response” Isn’t that so wonderful and so human, and so true.

Where Bella jumps into Edwards arms and (with no reservations at all) and says I love you. I can just see her smiling and almost laughing for joy as she says those words. And Edward smiling his crooked smile and responding “You are my life now.”

Edward spent weeks just sitting in Bella’s room watching her sleep. What a wonderful observation!!!!! What better way to point out how much he adored her.

N “ ‘love of Edward and Bella, the love of Juliet and Romeo and the love Jack and Rose in Titanic are the kind of loves that we must remember and I believe that everyone can love and be loved in that way.

What a wonderful closing thought. Yes those examples of true love are timeless. And they are what can make our lives such a joy.

Thank you so much for your excellent analysis and for helping us all understand “the declarative moment” even better.

Your friend,
Doc B

PS You never need to apologize for your translations. There are thousands of native speaking participants who can’t come even close to matching the true eloquence of your words.

Sorry I am late in responding. After I posted this discussion I had a two hour lunch discussion with a Psychiatrist friend. He was nice enough to do a clinical analysis for me of Bella, Edward, and Jacob's relationship. So I have been writing a blog on his enlightening incites.

OK How did I feel as I read chapter thirteen. STUNNED! I was just blown away by it's beauty and Steph's incite into human psychology.

Here is a key, I think to understanding Bella. Stephenie has a very, very powerful ego. Most people think that boastful show offs have powerful egos. But it is just the opposite. Those poor devils are miserable and ashamed of themselves.

Edward says "I should have left long ago." Bella responds "I don't want you to go I MUMBLED PATHETICALLY!! To be able to openly admit how pathetic some of ALL of our actions are is a sign of a VERY powerful and healthy ego.

Bella can automatically respond in that way because a big piece of Bella is Stephanie. My Psychiatrist friend agrees.

Remember how our group has had intimate discussions. And we have been able to admit to our human frailties. That is a sign of a healthy ego.(having the courage to admit to our weaknesses.
The next think I was stuck by was Steph's genius for expressing exactly how it feels to be totally in love. "You are my life now" "I would rather die than stay away from you"
And because of Stephanie's genius for a moment I felt like I was Edward saying those lines (Not the parts about killing Bella )

q2. What did I feel was the most endearing thing Bella said "This is enough" I have mentioned this before, but the power of her stating that, "if the only physical contact she may ever have (in her entire life) with the man she adores, may well never be more than being held in his arms," is just awe inspiring.

q3 Which of Edward's statements did I find most endearing ? "You are my life now." To me that line takes the cake.

Because as we discussed before for "really" falling in love means a whole new part of you exists now. It means a shifting of the concept of "me" to "we" permanently.

q 4. Stephanie perfectly placed the "golden spike*" She said that she started writing "Twilight" from the "declarative moment, in the meadow" and then she continued writing the story to the ending at the prom. Then she was faced with the challenge of starting over again at the beginning and working up to the meadow. And she perfectly merged the two stories.

* When America build it's transcontinental railroad, when the railroad builders (one from California, the other from New York) met in the middle of the nation the last spike they drove to unite the to lines was made of gold. That's why Stephanie refers to uniting the two stories in the middle as her "golden spike moment."

Most sincerely and respectfully,
Doc B

Done-zoe. Now the fun strats and I get to read your responses. Joy!

. .
Where did Edward and Darcy come from? Carl Jung answered the question.

Carl Jung (The father of modern psychology) was contemplating the similarities between the Roman’s gods and the Greeks god’s, and the Hawaiian gods.

And then it hit him.
All of the different cultures around the world had at one time worshiped a god of war, a maternal god, a god of love, a masculine god and on and on.

And then he deduced that every where around the entire world every single different cultures had come up with the same concepts of the same gods, because all of them were projecting parts of their identical human psyches.

So every normal man and every normal woman’s psyche (their mental being that made them who they are) had to have part of their nature which was feminine, masculine, loving, hating, kind, cruel, maternal, paternal, and on and on.
Jung taught us that Jane Austen’s wonderful, lovable, male character Darcy in “Pride and Prejudice” is actually just the masculine part of “JANE” (the male part of her even though she was a very normal feminine and natural woman.)

And similarly Stephanie can portray Edward so perfectly, because he actually is a part of her.

And no one else will ever be able to describe exactly how Darcy feels. And how he perceives things as well as Jane Austen could because, he WAS her.

The Same goes for Edward Cullen, and Stephanie Meyer.

And it is for that same reason that the women reading “Twilight” tend to instinctively think of themselves as Bella.

But that is also why they can suffer and delight with Edward. Because a part of each of them, is Edward.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Oh and is a part of all of us Edward’s monster ? I am afraid so. Let’s just hope that it is a very small part.

Most sincerely, and respectfully,
Doc B

* FYI Each Roman thought that he or she was a descendent of a personal god. Julius Caesar the most famous warrior of all time, felt that he was a descendent of Venus, the female goddess of love.

As Mr. Buttons likes to say. “Go figure!” ..
