I need a little clarification about Alice....

I read the entire saga, I'm a fan of S.Meyer. I couldnt let go, I read Twilight a 2nd time...I'm glad I did....I completely missed an entire section I didnt understand the first time I read thru. Alice was in a mental asylum? And an older vampire took her from James? Do I understand that correctly? Then, James destroyed the older vampire and Alice went free??
