When Alice came over, she seemed as surprised by the twins' appearance as I was. "Wow. They look like.." Jacob walked in then and said, "Don't you dar call my kids vampires." Alice rolled her eyes and muttered, "Sue me for stating the obvious." Jake turned to the twins and cooed while he lifted Kenna into a towel, then did the same with Aidan. I pushed my hair out of my face and said, "I guess we should go see Carslisle. I'll help you dress the twins, babe." I grabbed Kenna from him and she buried her face in my shoulder. As I followed Jacob to the nursery, she squirmed around, playing peek-a-boo with Alice.
Jake and I dressed the babies warmly, since it was snowing outsde. Once Aidan was dressed, Alice took him from Jake and started humming to him. I could practically see the thought in her head. She had a feeling he was a vampire-all the signs were there. I wasn;t so sure. I finished dressing Kenna and hugged her closer to my neck. I was the only one Kenna let hold her for longer than twenty minutes.
Carslisle and Edward were waiting at the door, arms open. I handed Kenna off to Edward and Alice gave Aidan to Carslisle. Jacob wrapped his arm around my waist and kissed my hair. "They'll be fine," he whispered into my hair. I realized my hands were shaking; I needed to know what was wrong. Carslisle said, "Well, they look quite..different. Look here, Aidan." Aidan looked at Carslisle for a moment, then at me. He reached out both arms and I reflexively cradled him. Carslisle lifted his eyebrows and said, "He has to get used to other people, Nessie. If he doesn't, they will never make it outside of our family." I sighed and gave him back.
Kenna was staring into Edward's eyes. I turned my head to the side slightly, so I could see what he saw. "Amazing," Edward whispered, "It's like she's showing me something. It's very dull, though. Maybe the beginning of a power.." Edward looked up with bright eyes and Carslisle shook his head. "Not a possibility. I tried research, but nothing much came up. In this situation, I can almost guarantee no vampire ability. In fact..I think the twins have more wolf ability. These powers will soon fade. It was a temporary thing. But, if you and Jacob have more children, that would be incredible to see. I think you guys could end up with a batch of normal kids. That's all theory, though."
I looked to Jake and he seemed awed. "Wow, wolves. The pack will be thrilled!" I took the babies from the guys and started toward the kitchen, where the whole family was listening. Emmett took Aidan from me and pretended to wrestle with him. Almost at the same time, Rosalie gently picked up Kenna. "Careful!" She said to Emmett. He rolled his eyes and passed Aidan to Jasper. Emmett came up behind me and said, "So, you planning on making some more babies soon? If you guys have enough, I was thinking of starting a baseball team! Esme and Alice could get uniforms and-" I punched him in the stomach and said, "Shut up, Em. Babies aren't toys!" I found Jake on his cell phone. He was talking to Sam; they were both enthusiastic about the new wolf members.
When Jake noticed me, he hung up. "Jake, I don't know about this." He looked confused. "About what?" I got closer and said, "Our kids are guinea pigs. I mean, they won't be normal, even if we do have human babies. Is that really the life we want for our kids?" He shrugged and said, "Well, we turned out fine." I sighed and said, "We don't even know how old they'll grow up to be." Carslisle stepped in then and said, "I hate to interrupt, but I know. With my calculations, your children will all grow to be age six at most. Every parent's dream."
