The Twilight Saga

Flightless bird, american mouth..the lyrics and the meaning behind the song

here some say what it meant i got it in twilight multiply site....
Iron & Wine Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics

I was a quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere

Have I found you
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping or lost you, american mouth
Big pill looming

Now I'm a fat house cat
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats curl through the wide fence cracks
Pissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold
And clean blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you
Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding or lost you, american mouth
Big pill stuck going down

the first two lines creating an image of young love.. boy, girl, diving for coins in the pool, toys - all contribute to this feeling
the word choice also reflects a sexual undertone - wet, deep
second line being the first touch on the theme of virtue in relation to sexuality - toys being his, erm, male parts - ha - stoplight eyes meaning that she is telling him how far he can go
so, young love. he wants this girl and he moves fast..she responds to him but remains virtuous

next two lines: he's prevented from seeing her, matures, and goes looking for her
cops echoes stoplight - cops enforce stoplight - so cops might be parents who see how this kid works and have her best interests at heart
he grows up, figuratively. hair typically symbolizes passion - cutting his long baby hair sounds like he has reigned his lust in.
stole falls into that same group with stoplight and cops. though he has made positive changes to his behavior to be with her he hasn't become a completely different person
dogs - universal symbol of loyalty - he wants to find this girl and commit to her

2nd verse:
cat vs dog - cat here sounds most like unlucky
nursing his sore blunt tongue from calling for her
fat house cat together - fat house cats watch what's going on outside
he looked for her, found her after a long time and has turned out unlucky, stuck watching what she does
he sees warm poison rats curl through wide fence cracks
fence - barrier - echoes stoplight
cracks - sexual image
she's letting these sleazy guys, rats through to her
warm poison - their (another erm) 'actions' with her pollute her (warm poison in fence cracks. yeah.)
they pose on magazine photos to use as fishing lures.. best i can come up with for this would be that they mark themselves on fake images of happyfunness associated with being a bad girl to lure the virtuous ones - the girls in christ's mountain stream - like her to them

have i found you or lost you?
-i've found you but you're different
if you're still you you're a flightless bird now, and he's jealous and weeping
if you've become a different person you're an expression of american values (magazine photos), and it's a very hard thing for him to swallow

second chorus: same, but more overt.. grounded - earthly, bleeding - in the context an image of lost virginity

first off i would drop the unlucky association with cats - not necessary
and it just keeps getting cooler! she's a fish, she's a bird.. are you seeing a dove? cause that would make sense.
**** and blood
warm and cold
obviously he'd like to eat the rats
cat to her flightless bird reflects him hunting her down before - anything else?
hrm..they were a boy and a they're a flightless bird and a cat.. seems like her condition as the bird makes him characterize himself as the cat..
blunt - he's lost power to call to her because she's out with the rats
he's jealous because he can't get to her like the rats can..
so he thought he was doing a good thing reforming out of his desire to be with her for real, in a relationship, but now she's with all these rats - what he would have become
