I’ve had it with all this speculation. Do vampires exist? Are they bloodthirsty villains or sparkly fashion models?
I’ll come clean! We do exist. As for the rest….
Let me take you back a little in history. How life started on this planet, I leave up to your individual beliefs. Fact is that a couple of million years ago this world was inhabited by giant
reptiles: dinosaures. Some of those were carnivores, some omnivores, others were vegetarians. As you know a lot of animals that are still alive are decendants of these creatures, they were not annihilated at all. Mammals at that time were mostly prey.
Creatures evolve as circumstances dictate. The reptiles became smaller, the mammals bigger.
Eventualy humans evolved and here you all are!
The reptiles and mammals both evolved out of the same creatures in the first place and here is where we come in! When the first humanoides appeared, two lines evolved at the same time. (Well, more did but some just died out because they didn’t have what it took to survive). One had all the characteristics of the apelike creature it evolved from and became you: humans. The other line retained more of the reptile characteristics and became us. Humanoides you like to refere to as vampires. It is as simple as that.
We have allways lived side by side on this planet, both adapting as well as we could to changing circomstances. Ofcourse in the beginning we had all the space to go our seperate ways but soon you took over this planet simply because of the overwhelming quantities. Being warmblooded you seem to breed a lot faster than we do. Luckely you also die faster than we do too. As you know reptiles live longer, so do we.
In the early years you probably noticed us, but you couldn’t care less. Feeding and breeding was about the only thing that you humans cared about.
But then your brain started to develop and soon you began to notice the differences. How we didn’t age as fast, how we were carnivores, while you humans ate about anything that didn’t kill you…
Some tribes feared us and tried every possible way to exterminate us. Others took us to be Gods.
(A bunch of my kind even believed it for a while. They lived in splendour in palaces up some mountain in Greece, using humans to fight out their battles for them… and copulating with them.)
I have read all the stories, seen the movies… some made me laugh, others made me sad. You have such silly notions about us.
Then Twilight came along and for the first time some of you started to see us for what we are; creatures with feelings and needs, just like you.
Allright, Miss Meyer didn’t get it totally right. I think she must have noticed some of us and made up her own story. She is quite observant though, some of the things she wrote are eeriely close to the thruth.
Let me tell you what she got right and what she got wrong.
We do prefere to live where it is cloudy. Not because we burn or sparkle, (That made me LOL), but because our skin does not change color the way yours does. It was allright when fashion dictated pale was beautiful, but when suntans came in, we went out of the sunshine alltogether. We do like to bask in the sun, like reptiles it is our only way to warm up, but we tend to stay out of sight when we do.
Our skin is harder than yours, she got that right, and it is a bit more scaly, so when the sun hits it, it might reflect a bit more… but we do not sparkle like diamonds.
As I told you before, we tend to live longer… you have an average of 85 years, we have a lifespan of about 350 to 400 years. (Legend has it some lived to a ripe old age of 500 or more.) Therefore, like the Cullens in the story, we spend quite a few years repeating school. Till we age enough to start work and then we spent quite some time at different jobs…
We are carnivores. We do not eat your food. (I did once, on a dare… and had to get rid of it the exact way Edward did. I couldn’t digest it.)
We do not have to eat as often as you do, due to a slower digestive system. We can go without food for weeks at the time. After a big meal we can stretch that to two months. (But we do have to use the bathroom now and again, if that was what you were wondering.)
Now the big question: do we eat humans?
I suppose we might have done at some point in history. There are just so many of you and you are easy prey. I suppose some might still take donw a human now and again, but believe me it is not very appetising eating something that looks allmost exactly like yourself. Ofcourse we do have murderers, crazy people and psychopats just like humans do. We try to eliminate those, but sometimes they create havoc before we can get to them.
Do we have laws? And upholders of those laws? Do the Volturi exist?
Yes, yes and …no!
Ofcourse we have laws, most of them are the human laws we try to stick to as much as possible in order not to attract attention. Just like the Cullens in the story. We do have our own policeforce that take on the criminals of our kind but we do not have royalty. The Volturi that have existed for thousands of years? Yeah, right!
No, like most coldblooded creatures we are not very interested in power and glory.
We are stronger and faster than you. Our heart does not have to work overtime like your weak heart does, but we do have hearts, and blood… and sperm.
Like I mentioned before, we do interact sometimes and children do get born. Not many, I grant you that, but we are compatible because of our common ansestor. Mythology has a lot of examples of the interaction, as is mentioned in the Twilight books, and many of it’s glorious heroes are in fact hybrid children. (So Renesmee isn’t as exeptional as the books make her out to be.)
As for the birth? I am afraid that sometimes the human mothers do die. It all depends what genes the baby carries. If it is more human, the pregnancy is not unlike your normal human pregnancy; if the child is predominantly vampire then the pregnancy is very much like the one descibed in the book. Messy!
Not many have knowledge of that factor, I wonder where Miss Meyer got the idea from. Not many of us know exactly how it works either. We are venemous, superfluous most of the time, but it can save lives, exactly as told in the story. BUT never a human life! Humans would die instantly. Biting a human to create a vampire is a lot of nonsense, but carriers of the vampire-gene can become fullblooded vampires through venom injection. It seems our venom holds both the gene and a healing ability. So my guess is Bella was a descendant of vampires. (Thus the pale skin and the unnatural attraction towards our kind)
The history of the Cullens on the other hand seems more like the legendary vampire stories. If they were human to start with, a bite from a vampire would have killed them instantly. More likely they were an ordinary vampire family and Miss Meyer wanted to make them more romantic for the readers.
What about Edward?
A 110 year old virgin? Ofcourse, if you rekon by human standards that seems a bit off, but for us that is about the right age to start looking for a compagnion. Some marry as young as 80, others tend to leave it till 150 and some never do find the right one. It depends. And we do mate for life, we don’t play the field like you humans seem to prefere.
I totally get the bewildered reaction of first love, especially if he falls for a human. The fear, the complexity of it all. He must have freaked out!
Stalking or overprotectiveness? I leave that up to you! His behaviour was not normal, I grant you that, but neither was his infactuation. I kind of feel sorry for the young man.
His reluctance to make her a vampire?
The boy had no idea if she had vampire genes, so naturally he didn’t want to risk killing her. Once she was pregnant it was very obvious she had the gene, otherwise the child would not have been mostly vampire.
Let me explain: in a human a male has an X and Y-chromosomes, females have two X’s. When the male X chromosome is added to the female X, the baby is a female; when the Y chromosome is added, the baby is male. It is the same thing with vampires and humans. The fact that the pregnancy was so obviously vampirelike, it was obvious that Bella had the right chromosome to add to the one Edward had. (In vampires it is the males that have the two X’s, the females the X and Y!) So If Bella were totally human, she would have added the X and the baby would have been predominantly human. In this case Bella had the Y and Renesmee was a vampire. (I have no idea how far back the vampire ancestory of Bella went since there just isn’t enough material we can study.)
The supposed barrenness of female vampires?
Some are, some are not. Just like with humans. The only difference: we do not ovulate every month like you do. With us it is every 3 to 4 years. So the chances of conceiving are not as great. But we do have our own families.
(No we do not lay eggs like reptiles, we produce eggs but carry them inside of our bodies and give birth like mammals do. We have to thank our common ancestor for that.)
I supose it could happen. I personally don’t know any vampires with special abilities, but I have heard the stories. Just like some humans claim to foresee the future or talk with dead people… I leave it up to you wether you believe it or not. I must say I don’t envy Edward if he hears everyones thoughts. He must get awful headaches!
I liked Jacob Black a lot, but I’m afraid I never ran into a werewolf or a shapeshifter, so I cannot answer any questions there. I am not saying I don’t believe they exist, but I have no knowledge of them. So if any werewolf or shapeshifter reads this, feel free to prove me wrong.
So, Miss Meyer got a lot right and she got a lot wrong. I don’t know if she is aware of us or not, but if she is not, she made some really good guesses. So I wonder? Maybe I should make a trip oversees and try to find out if the Cullen family really exists? Or maybe I’ll see if the Irish coven does? I love Ireland and it is much closer by.
One more thing: we could swim the Chanel I suppose, but I do prefere the comfort of a plane when I travel. And not needing to breathe is nonsense. Without oxygen our brain would die just like yours and we do need a brain, don’t we?
Now that I have explained a bit more about my kind I hope I have not spoiled it for any of you. But I suppose you can all still choose wether to believe me or not. If you prefere to stick to the “undead with fangs” theory, go right ahead! And if you prefere to keep dreaming of “blindingly beautiful boys that sparkle”, be my guest! But if you would like to get to know us as we are, you are welcome! We live among you, maybe even in the same street or building… maybe even in your own family. Maybe even you are the carrier of the vampire gene….
