I believe the real expression is that You always know what you have, you just never think you'd lose it. But that's just my opinion. 

My mom likes that I read so much. She thinks it makes me "smarter". 

Well, my favorite author is Cassandra Clare. She's an excellent writer. But other than that, I don't really pay attention to the authors that much. I just read because I enjoy it and it's a great way to pass the time.
